[MOPO] classic movie question (sort-a OT)

2010-09-04 Thread William A Brent
I'm doing a bit of research, I'm looking for use of the word slob in
classic films-

so its really OT unless the term is used on a poster -
two that I have are

Bogart to March in Desperate Hours Smart Eyed slobs
Tracey to Kelly in Inherit the Wind You poor slob, you're all alone

I know its an odd request, but I'm a fairly odd fellow :-)

thanks

Re: [MOPO] What WERE the best film biographies of popular singers?

2010-02-20 Thread William A Brent

One of my favorites for pop music content (Jolson Story is still my over-all)
seemed to go out of its way to get not one single fact right - but no
film captured the

feel for the early rock and roll music scene than did American Hot Wax. Having
Chuck Berry, Sreamin' Jay Hawkins, Jerry Lee Lewis and Fankie Ford in
it, didn't hurt.
Most references list it as a bio pic of Alan Freed - but it really
only coved about 5 days

in his life - it was more a bio-pic of the 50's music industry in the US

Re: [MOPO] Metropolis 2010 Restoration

2010-02-13 Thread William A Brent
if memory serves - this complete version was send out to potential
distributors, each of whom would cut it for their market - not an
uncommon practice, and it explains why there are so many different
versions of so many films. In the US the studio usually owned the
releasing company so his didn't happen, but every time a film was
re-issued, it was snipped a bit - then when sound came in - some
amazing things happened. note the sad history of Phantom Of The Opera.
Also, when US films were released in the UK - titles were changed,
(Hallelujah I'm A Bum), Musical numbers were cut (Singing Fool), and
some scenes were omitted - the same thing happened here with UK
imports. There is an examination scene in the Vivian Leigh Anna
Karenena that is not in the US print, and a 8 minute segment that is
only in the US version.
When they found an original release print of All Quiet on the Western
Front - it was released in the US as 'restored'. - no one
bothered to check that there was a 2 minute scene (showing only a
phonograph) that was cut from the UK prints. And the list goes on.
many films were trimmed BEFORE their original (general) release, and
the footage is gone - except for snippets that appear in the trailers
(Lon Chaney fighting a bear in the Wolfman for example) - and then
there were restorations done for Laser Disc, that have not been
carried over to the DVD release (1776 The Alamo come to mind).

It will be nice to see Metropolis in this form - its the way Lang
envisioned the film - even though it was never released this way.

legally - no ad material can be sent. - press kits are exclusively
advertising, so no, they can not

be legally sent.

Media mail is an interesting thing; I collect American Heritage
magazines - Up to 1980 they contained no ads,

so these can be sent media mail, but the ones published later, can not.

I often send phonograph records - when book rate became media mail, I was
told that CDs and tapes are sound recordings, but records are
not (that took a month to clear up)!

you can send 8mm and 16mm movies (but not unexposed film) - you can
not send 35mm movies or

unexposed film.

you can send DVDs, CDs and video tapes, (as long as they are not
blank), but can not include

a catalog of other releases (that would be an ad).

Now - what is legal, and what people get away with are two different things.

Magazines are not supposed to be sent Media Mail.

unless they do not contain advertisements (as is the case with
American Heritage 1954-1979)

The advertising in pressbooks is defunct, so technically it's not
advertising: it's a vintage book.

doesn't work that way.

send a pressbook for Gone With The Wind.
the ads are from 1939 - and it's called a book!
and you would probably get away with it.

but it's not legal.

you could argue the ads are defunct (as if that mattered) - but a
Postal inspector could argue they are for a
movie that is in current release (on video). You could argue it's a
book - but it's is a book of
ads, text and graphics produced to promote a specific product that is
still available.

Re: [MOPO] My question to 300+ of you: Why are you a lurker on MoPo?

2009-06-04 Thread William A Brent
I don't, as a rule, have much of value to contribute to discussions
on posters, at least
not with dealers or hard core collectors. I collect 16mm films, and
will buy some advertising
art to display for each of the films in my collection. I don't have
the wall space for more than a couple of 1 sheets,

but I do like title cards, and have quite a few of them scattered about.

I find some of the debates fun to read, but there are so many strong
opinions, and many of them

ill-informed - that offering some commentary would just not be productive.

Also - my personal tastes are not in line with the apparent collective thinking
of the group. I think a graphically beautiful insert from a 1937
Monogram picture

has greater value that a pristine one sheet from Breakfast at Tiffany's.

Also, I place no value on posters from films made in the last 30 - 40
years, probably because, for the most part, I
place no value on the movies made during that time period. I can't
watch bad movies, there just
isn't enough time - I don't think Ed Wood produced enjoyable films -
just bad ones - and I haven't

seen all the good movies out there yet, so why waste my time.

Also I generally shun movies (and pop culture) that achieved the
highest accolades from the general
public. for example - movies I just don't like include: 2001, My Fair
Lady, Lawrence of Arabia, How the

West was Won, Gone with the wind, Maltese Falcon (1941), Fantasia

movies I think are under-rated include: John Wayne's Alamo (but ONLY
the full version - preferably the

Laser), All I Want For Christmas, Once Upon A Time, Port of Seven Seas.

My Favorite films (and just cause I like 'em, does not mean I think
they are great movies):
Rhubarb, About Face, Inherit the Wind, A Matter of Life and Death,
Maltese Falcon (1931),

It Happened Tomorrow

These are in no way comprehensive lists, but are offered to give some
idea on how my tastes run, and how
different they are from the conventional wisdom. Its the same with
music - I could listen to Mario Lanza
all day long - I find luciano pavarotti over blown. I prefer Norman
Rockwell to Picasso, Rembrant to Van Gough
and just about anybody to Keanu Reeves (the black hole of cinema). I
believe Will Farrell is as funny as

a cry for help, and Britney Spears is as entertaining as watching paint dry.

so it goes

now you see why I keep my mouth shut (metaphorically typing :-)?

Bill

if some one ever had written I don't want to pay fair market for it, so can I

[MOPO] Semi-OT: Why Kids Don't Collect Stuff Today

2009-01-20 Thread William A. Brent
I think the money/value aspect has killed it for a lot of people -
most collectors I know
collect for many reasons - none of which have anything to do with the
value of what
they are collecting (if it does go up in value, its a plus, of
course) - personally I couldn't
be happier that my phonograph records have no $ value - it means I
can enjoy them,
listen to them, and never acquire one because I think its worth
something (or will be).
Did those who collected comic books in the 60's 70's do so because
of their future value?
but along comes 1989, direct sales and spot market speculation, and
all of a sudden
comics are the new collectable - and every issue a potential gold
mine. A friend of
mine passed away a few years back - and his family is still trying to
understand how

the 25,000 comic books in their basement have no value.
Collecting is also about the joy of the hunt - a good deal of which
died when Al Gore

invented the world wide web.
And I attribute a portion of this lack of interest in collecting to
the tiny attention span
of todays population - something that was deliberately pushed on us
by the ad men and

manufacturers - the more ephemeral product become, the sooner we discard them
and buy a new one.

2009-01-12 Thread William A. Brent

hey - if this guy wants one of a kind Disney paper I have
original (one of a kind) hand drawn Disney designs,
made for the Bradley (Elgin) watch company - from which they, in turn,
made the color separations to use in printing.
These were created for the Bradley/Disney watches.
According to Ebay Disney character watch history began
in 1933, when Ingersoll manufactured the first Mickey Mouse
watch. In 1957, Ingersoll became U.S. Time, and around 1968 the name was
changed again to Timex.
In 1971 Timex chose not to continue with the Disney contract, and it was
acquired by Elgin National Industries, Inc,
on January 1, 1972. Bradley Time Division of Elgin National Industries
produced most of the Disney character watches for the
next thirteen years.
This art work was thought destroyed in 1985, after the relationship with
Disney was dissolved - they were never made available
to the public in any form other than as watches.
I've got Mickey's Ive got Minnies, I've got characters - send him on

Re: [MOPO] OFF TOPIC - NOT THE TIME FOR POLITICS

2005-09-02 Thread William A Brent

1. the federal government has never been equipped to deal with
regional or local problems (or disasters).
2. federal programs - like the department of education and such - are
cash cows producing no value.
3. if you do not like Your (our) President - then no matter what he
does - you will find fault with.
4. people who choose to live below sea level in a coastal city - it
would seem to me - at least have
contributed to their situation more than - say - a janitor
working in #2 World Trade Center on 9/11.
And remember - no body told the janitor there was a plane coming
and that he should evacuate.
5. These are Americans, in an American city - and we, as a nation, or
simply as compassionate humans
should do what we can to ease their suffering. Joining the
typical media frenzy against anyone
right of center - is not helping.

and what of the media? - how many millions of dollars in equipment
and time have been dedicated to
getting cameras in front of the suffering? And while doing so - how
many of these media crews have
packed some extra water of food to hand out to those they are photographing.

in the final analysis, there will be many acts of great kindness,
sacrifice and heroism - and there will be plenty
of things that go wrong. And for all the things that go wrong, there
will be plenty of time to blame
whom ever you oppose personally or politically - and there will be
plenty of that blame to go around.

But when you preach to the choir - come from a position of knowledge,
not emotion. Its difficult to
counter your argument, if you actually know what you're talking about.

The American Red Cross may be expert at responding to public disasters,

local chapters.
There's the fundraiser in Louisiana caught padding her own bank account
with donations, the manager in Pennsylvania who embezzled to support her
crack cocaine habit and the executive in Maryland who forged signatures
on purchase orders meant for disaster victims, to name a few.
But the biggest criminal scandal inside the Red Cross surfaced in New

among the biggest charity frauds ever.

WASHINGTON - Generous North Americans who gave more than
half a billion dollars (U.S.) to the Red Cross expected their donations
would go directly to surviving family members and victims of the Sept. 11
terrorist attacks.
Canadians opened their wallets to donate $10 million (Cdn) to the New
York, Washington and Pennsylvania victims, Suzanne Charest of the
Canadian Red Cross said last night.
But in a growing scandal which threatens to rock the foundation of the
120-year-old American Red Cross, it now appears that of the $530 million
(U.S.) total donated, more than $200 million is being diverted to the
blood agency's long-term goals and administrative costs.
That includes (all figures in U.S. dollars):
$109 million for improving the Red Cross' telecommunications, accounting
and database management systems.
$50 million for the agency's blood reserves program.
$26 million for community outreach.
$29 million for indirect or administrative relief costs.

$11 million for international assistance.
