I personally love the fact that it is in Cleveland. Its about time we got out of that dump of a hotel in Columbus. On the other hand, I don't like it being on Memorial Day weekend. I am sure there will be varying opinions on both issues. [MOPO] HOLLYWOOD POSTER AUCTION AND CONVENTION
23 dealers are on board for the Hollywood Poster Auction and Convention, May 21-24 in Cleveland Ohio at the Sheraton Cleveland Airport Hotel! Dealer list to follow next week! The hotel phone number is 216-267-1500. Reservations can be made starting next weekthey won't be accepting them until then. Rooms are a reasonable $95 per night plus tax, in a fabulous environment! The hotel has free wifi, an indoor pool, a hot tub, a 24 hour work out room, and more. It was voted the 4th best Sheraton Hotel in the US for food. There is an excellent bar and restaurant. We intend to keep the old time flavor of Cinevent at this convention, where it is family-collector-dealer friendly . There will be no films shown or guest stars. This is a collector's convention, run by collectors for collectors. Wall tables are sold out. Interior tables still remain at $100 per table, which covers all three days. For those flying to Cleveland (CLE), there is a free shuttle bus from the terminal to and from the hotel. Dealers' ballroom and auction rooms are opposite each other on the ground floor! You can get up from your table to bid should you like, or bid online from your dealer table! We have designed this for maxium convenience. Local television and news coverage is expected, and advertising in numerous antique periodicals as well. Please contact The Last Moving PIcture Company for dealer tables or information at las...@aol.com or call 440-256-3660. Thank you for your continued support. Morris Everett Jr. p.s. Re: [MOPO] hollywood poster auction DISCUSSION
Frank, I think you're exaggerating just a little bit. I attended this year's Cinevent, and have been going to this show, at the same hotel, for almost 20 years. While this hotel may have its flaws(e.g. poor A/C in some common areas), calling it disgusting is grossly unfair and totally inaccurate. I have no shares in this hotel, and no personal interest in it, I just don't want people who never attended the show, and who might be contemplating on doing so in the future, be wrongly influenced by your highly subjective bad experience. No printing capacity in the business center (exactly 2 computer monitors) may not be as important to most guests as it is for you. Sorry. I just got back from Cinevent and it's great to connect with dealers and buyers I haven't seen all year and nothing, not even a super-image zoom, can replace holding a poster or lobby cards in your hands to see the artwork, color, texture etc. Besides which it's tedious to go through all the Heritage or Bruce Hershenson listings to check condition and I lose interest one quarter of the way through. That said, I found this year's Cinevent to be a someone subdued affair. Unfortunately the economy has taken its toll on the art of collecting movie ephemera. Most of the dealers were complaining that sales were slow and I don't think Morrie going to count this one as his most financially successful auction either. Part of the problem for me is that disgusting hotel the Cinevent insist on using. Their business center had no capacity to print anything, given that their printers were all down and had been apparently for some time. The rooms either smell of disinfectant or stale cigarettes. The air- conditioner in my room was dead and had to be changed. The restaurant doesn't even look clean and wake-up calls were ignored by the front desk. The auction room was decided hot, so much so I couldn't sit in that room for more than an hour at a time and Morrie seemed to be experiencing technical problems throughout. I've made a decision to stay elsewhere ...anywhere else... next year. I only wish the Cinevent management would wise up and follow suit. Without people like Morrie and Richard Allen, who started the hobby and spent massive effort on making the world aware of it, there likely wouldn't be a hobby today! With that being said, I do think that live auctions are a dying breed, and large collectible shows have a similar problem. Why should people spend lots and lots of money on travel and hotels when they could spend that same money on buying posters? In the old days, the advantage was that you could see the items up close and personal, and that was not possible through the mail, without spending $50,000 or so on a deluxe color catalog as I did, and even then you didn't get a really good idea of what the condition was, just what the image looked like. But now, with the Internet, you CAN provide super-sized images that show every flaw in excrutiating detail (of course some auctions choose not to do so, with fuzzy scans, but that is their choice), so I really think that one giant advantage live auctions had is gone. I hope Morrie can continue to put on his auctions (to whatever extent he can), and that the hobby will support him, for as you rightly point out, Cinevent might not survive either, and it is wonderful that once a year there is a place in the middle of the country where many of the members of the hobby gather (I have attended many times, and would have been there this time, except for fate conspiring against me; Memorial Day falls super-early this year, and it started on the last day of my kid's school, and my 14 year old had perfect attendence all four years of middle school and he wasn't about to miss the very last day, and besides, he got straight As all year and got an award that last day, so I had to choose being at that over being at the auction, and it was no choice at all). The rooms smell of disinfectant. The elevators are ridiculous. The air-conditioner was not working in two the rooms we were initially given and frankly it wasn't working in the ballroom that was used for the auction on Day One. It is inexcusable at a business/conference hotel for there to be no printing capacity in the business center because the printers have been broken for some time. Equally inexcusable is the front desk's inability to provide wake-up calls that it accepted the night before. We almost missed our plane home. And yes, the decorations in the restaurant are refurbished but the food quality is unfortunately the same low standard that has existed ever since I've been going to Cinevent. My grandmoteher used to say... are you buying the man or his clothes when it came to charcter and integrity.. as many can put on the dog however dont deliver. the Show in Columbus is comprised of a whos who of collector buff and fine people rather than consider the accoutrments of the facitlity, consider the wealth of class and embodiement of treasure at the facility... A few years back,,, John Kisch sent My son and I to the Gramercy Park hotel. NYC.. a old hotel lacking the newness of the chains well firts ... they were filming addicted to Love with matthew Brodrick/ Meg Ryann and directed by Griffen Dunne and in the ROOM next to us... PLus we met and spoke to Matthew in the hall nexct to our ROOM.! My son flipped as Matthew asked him if he had any questions... Then we stood and gawked as they filmd on the street,, the soundman had us as guests... Later I took my son to the Plaza hotel for a Night.. It ws 300.00 a night back then in 90s.. the Gramercy was like 179. Anyways my son said.. Dad I think the plazas no big deal. I liked the other Hotel better well spent 300.oo to teach Kid that Looks can be deceiving...:) Kid wanting to see plaza expensive... seeing emperors clother -Priceless...:) he wanted to saty there and buy the 10.oo candy bars like he saw in Home alone which I was told was shot most in Chicago anyway... BUT how was the show as far as the auction and vendors and attendence at CINEVENT.. thatswhat I want to know.. lobby card invasion wrote: I stand by my statement AND SO DO I. Hey, if the dealers are happy with the sales they brought in this year and if Diane and Morrie are happy with the auction results and Sean is happy with the elevators who am I to complain? For the record I had a good time at the convention and if fact recommended it to some clients. I just detest this hotel and will rectify that next year by staying elsewhere, something with a spa as you suggested. Tom Martin has the right idea it's the man, not his clothes I've been doing conventions for 41 years and I ran them for 7 as well when I lived in Cincinnati (I also co-directed a huge convention in 1981 at the Pennsylvania in NYC).. It is what it is.. Steve Haynes and the rest of the Cinevent people have used this hotel for decades and while I will readily admit it is run down, they have been renovating the place and had the economy the current bank situation not stopped them, they would have continued to do so. Right now they have 5 tractor trailers full of supplies sitting out back for when they can restart the renovation. One major reason for using the facility they use is cost. Another is facility. It's the only hotel in a certain price range with the ability to have a dealers room AND a movie room within that price range. If they try to move to another facility that pleases you, the cost will skyrocket and instead of paying $125 or so for tables, we'll be paying $500 and that will cut very deeply into dealers. Or they won't have a movie room and that will cut deeply into attendance (this show has many attendees that do not go to the dealers and only watch the movies) Concerning wake up calls.. I had no problem this year. Consider this. There are a lot of really nice Convention-type hotels in the area. Their room rates are really cheap over Memorial Day Weekend. Not a lot of people want to spend their holidays in Columbus. We checked several looking for an alternative to the Ramada dump and they were in the neighborhood of $80 a night and several of the luxury hotels like the Renaissance were $100 a night and remember you get a discount when you can guarantee the quantity of rooms take up by attendees at a Convention. I did get a sense that the convention did not do particularly well this year. Most of that may be the economy but perhaps taking a new approach to this convention and providing some quality facilities will inspire more people to bring their families for the weekend. Re: [MOPO] hollywood poster auction DISCUSSION
Franc your comment is really very shallow. It is a singular perspective that does not take into account the full spectrum of problems any convention promoter faces. For instance, my cost to be at and exhibit at Cinevent is approximately $1600 let's say they move to a hotel that costs 30% more. My expenses increase proportionately and now I either have to sell more to get to the same financial spot that I had with lower costs. This brings in the equation of whether my expanded costs justify being able to do the show versus staying home just doing my weekly auction. then my absence other dealer's absence means less material for sale in the room to which buyers cease to come which in turn decreases the income to the show promoters and the eventual disappearance of the show due to falling revenues. and so, we lose one of the last bastions of poster conventions and the hobby gets that much smaller. which do you prefer.. a convention in a crappy facility or no convention at all.? In all likelihood, that is the equation you have to deal with. as a metaphor: I'm a poker player. If I have a choice of a game that takes place in the ast stall of the men's room at the Mirage, or no game at all.. well, I'll just have to be listening to people crapping all day Rich At 12:20 PM 5/26/2009, Franc wrote: Consider this. Richard --- Do you really pay 30% more at the Burbank Marriott? OR at the Hollywood Renaissance? I'm frankly not even suggesting anyone pay 30% more. I'm suggesting Cinevent use the resources and clout that they have given the number that attend this event each year to negotiate an equal or better deal at a better facility. To say that we've always done it at the Ramada is not productive or even good business. Re: [MOPO] hollywood poster auction DISCUSSION
The scenario you mention assumes that a new hotel would be more expensive. I've been helping run a convention for a while, and we've changed hotels a number of times. Our most recent change was to a MUCH better hotel at about the same price - this for a variety of reasons (the hotel is new and is fishing for new annual/repeat business, the location is different, our attendance is increasing making our business more attractive to the hotel). And one of the reasons we changed this last time is because we bothered to listen to the complaints of our attendees (though the hotel problems were self-evident anyway). I know every situation is different, and I'm not presuming to know what theirs is, but maybe the Cinevent runners should at least shop around for a different venue - they may be pleasantly surprised that they might get a better hotel for a CHEAPER price. -Steve From: Richard Halegua Comic Art sa...@comic-art.com To: MoPo-L@LISTSERV.AMERICAN.EDU Sent: Tuesday, May 26, 2009 2:53:21 PM Subject: Re: [MOPO] hollywood poster auction DISCUSSION Franc your comment is really very shallow. Steve I know personally that they have.. I also have the convenience of knowing Columbus. They have few options and in general, the biggest obstacles are facility and cost. I'm perfectly satisfied at the Ramada. I just hope they get the a/c situation resolved.. Off topic here again. Tom Martin is quite right. As a touring musician, I have stayed in the worst possible hotels imaginable, as well as some of the best. (I won't bore you with horror stories, but there was a place in Florida where I woke up in the middle of the night with gigantic, filthy cockroaches crawling on my FACE! I get skeeved just thinking about it. There was also the night where I woke with an entire ashtray's worth of cigarette butts stuck to my face, but that wasn't the hotel's fault) However, the oddest (and coolest) stay I ever spent was in Ireland. We stayed at a wonderful old bed and breakfast in, I think, Galway. As we were leaving for the gig, the proprietress asked me, Would you like your room with a cat or no cat? I was in a huge hurry, so without asking for details, I blurted out, Cat! I got in the van, played the gig, and came back to a bed witha hot water bottle for my cold feet and a live, purring cat to snuggle up to me to keep me both warm and company. You don't get THAT at no Ramada! By the way, when I was with the Greg Kihn band during the Eighties, we were banned from ever staying at ANY Ramada Inn, ever again. Read about it in my book: MOPO is a PG-rated group. Greg Douglass Bruce Hershenson wrote: This is kind of off-topic, but you guys reminded me of the wildest night I ever spent in a hotel room. I was driving across country in 1969 or so with Bud Plant and four other guys in a Econoline Van going to New York from California, stopping at comic cons. At night we all shared ONE room and these guys REALLY liked to save money! We were in Louisiana, and we kept passing name hotels and motels that were like $25 or $50 a night, and the other guys were saying that was too much (and they were going to pay one-sixth of that!). Finally we got to the worst part of town, and we saw a place that was like $10. We pullef in and got one room, and went to it. The place smelled dreadful (no air conditioning, and it was like 100 degrees), and had a bed with a mattress that had huge stains all over it. We all had sleeping bags, so that was no big deal. I noticed one wall had a big blanket hanging on it, and I wondered why, so I looked under it, and there was a humongous hole in the wall. I told them I wanted to leave, and they disagreed, but then some guys pulled up outside and started unloading a bunch of shotguns and other heavy artillery, and that convinced the other guys, and we left, and took turns driving and sleeping. Re: [MOPO] hollywood poster auction DISCUSSION
Without having been at Cinevent, I may offer another perspective based on my 20+ years of business travel. I run a $120 M business where we do trade shows every year. My group personally does 6-7 major ones. (1)When I traveled infrequently, I could put up with a lot if only for 1 night. Now that I travel much more often, I am really not tolerant of smelly rooms, no business services, no wake up calls, bad restaurants and the like, especially as I get older. I hate smelly rooms, no AC and noise. The $300+ Marriott Washington DC is a lousy hotel (often no parking and twice no hot water). The $89 Hampton Inn in Fall River, Mass is a wonderful hotel, clean with good breakfast and extremely accomodating service. It isn't always what you pay. (2)My corporate travel department is avoiding putting us in Ramada Inns or hotels. Way too many complaints nationwide...big rates, lousy service. (3)It's been my experience (especially within the last 4 years) that customers have a lot of buying power with respect to hotels and conventions, except for a few (Jacob Javits, Orlando, New Orleans, San Fran). I recently exhibited at a event for Nurse Executives in San Antonio. We paid $2800 for a 10 foot booth in the convention center and this is for a vendor. That was for a 3 1/2 day exhibit. I find the $1600 amount to be a lot of money for an individual exhibitor. My 2 cents for what it's worth. I just went on priceline and bid $40 a night, won and stayed at the Sheraton Suites about 15 munutes away. Two big flat screens, couch, fridge, microwave, great free computer area with printers, pool, close to nice restaurants, etc. Rental car was cheap and with my GPS I got to and from the Ramada with ease. I knew I didn't want to stay at the Ramada so I made do and saved $ and in style. As far as the auction went, I was one of two other bidders there for the last couple of hours on Sunday. Yeah that Ramada is a pretty funky place. Smells of old cigarettes and BO, but after I dig into the posters and movies I forget about the place and have a good time. I won 3 posters in the auction, so it was a good year. I agree it would be better if all the dealers were in one area. I think it's always better to keep your crowd in one place. And for pete sake, if the seller leaves the table and puts someone in charge of their goods, that person should know the prices of the products! Re: [MOPO] hollywood poster auction DISCUSSION
Granted, Franc could phrase more diplomatically and couch his opinions conservatively, however, there are valid points: A 'crappy' convention venue possibly connotes an overall branding of the movie poster hobby ... 'new blood' may prefer a better place. Maintaining a consistent site and time for an annual event would be preferable for several reasons ... but if, overall, 'the fishing' is declining, do you cut bait and head for another area, or keep fishing in the same place? Other venues may offer comparable (or better) facilities for same (or better) pricing. My 2 pfennig. BTW ... Michael, Speaking from what I have seen... Morrie was extremely short of help this year. I believe this is also the first year as long as I have attended that Marty Davis wasn't involved. Anyway, Morrie tried some new things this year, some worked well, but many did not...I believe for next year there will changes...for the best! As for the catalogues, this was the first time I received a catalog for the Columbus auction, I've only receive flyers. If you were at the auction you could get a catalog free of charge. They are not the quality of Heritages auctions. Heritage has the resources and personal to put together their beautiful catalogs, pictures, and descriptions...plus from what I understand, they print their own. Morrie did this on his own, with a lot of help from his family...whom I respect. If you viewed the online catalog, you would have received a better description and picture than the catalog, plus if you really wanted to bid, many options to do so...including coming to Cinevent to be a part of the poster community as those who did. There was a time that Morrie's auction was one of the biggest and best. A lot of high end poster were there, if you were after them. Heritage and of course Bruce went to Morrie auctions, learned from them, and did their own. We need Morrie auctions, Cinevent (to survive) needs it, and we collectors and dealers need it. To bash it without giving Morrie some constructive opinions/criticisms will only help hurt our future of this business including the live auctions that are doing well at this time. Re: [MOPO] hollywood poster auction DISCUSSION
I love Morrie, and he is absolutely one of the pioneers of this hobby! Re: [MOPO] hollywood poster auction DISCUSSION
I think Collectible Shows and on-site auctions can still have the edge. FRANC From: Bruce Hershenson brucehershen...@gmail.com Subject: Re: [MOPO] hollywood poster auction DISCUSSION To: MoPo-L@LISTSERV.AMERICAN.EDU Date: Sunday, May 24, 2009, 10:41 AM I love Morrie, and he is absolutely one of the pioneers of this hobby! Well, we#39;re staying at the convention; its being held at the worst hotel possible. Their business center doesn#39;t have a printer that works. So, I can just imagine what their capacity is for internet lines to handle an online auction. Its a shame because morris is a great guy and he works so hard on these auctions.
