[MOPO] I just said good-bye to my ebay store
ebay has once again been pestering me lately, telling me I need to ‚adjust‘ my store listings to once again ‚comply‘ with their ‚new rules‘. Today, I received another message from them, informing me some adjustments will soon become ‚mandatoy‘ and others will be ‚optional‘. Their decision to introduce mandatory ‚automatic renewal‘ some time ago already pushed me to the edge and I thought about canceling my store subscription back then. Now they are at it AGAIN. Whatever their new rules might be, I don‘t even want to know. My yearly subscription would‘ve ended in three days anyway, and after that I would‘ve been stuck with them for another year. Not anymore. I just canceled my subscription, so on July 1, my ebay store will be history. I was still making a little bit of money, but not nearly enough to take up with yet ANOTHER set of new rules and regulations. On top of their ridiculous fees, that is. Also, in recent months, my quota of non-paying buyers has increased dramatically. That sellers are not allowed to leave appropriate feedback for deadbeat bidders is yet another thing that has bothered my since the day they introduced that policy. I‘m buying and selling on ebay since 1999, so I have watched pretty much all of their so-called ‚improvements‘ over more than two decades by now. So far, I could still convince myself to stick with them, but not anymore. Enough is enough. Good for you! I've had a couple recent transactions on ebay that have been awful. Mainly it's due to the global shipping program, a great excuse for ebay to take a little more out of buyer's and, I assume, seller's pockets. It's terrible and it takes forever and the tracking is completely useless. The odd seller who still does things the old way is wonderful to run across in these days when shipping is almost a deal breaker, especially from the US to me in Canada. If shipping continues to get even more ridiculous, I guess it will be a strictly US thing...maybe that's their goal? Anyway, always happy to see someone leave that site if they can. Re: [MOPO] I just said good-bye to my ebay store
Yes, the international orders have been such a stressful headache for me. I had 12 orders hung up at different outgoing ports and customs since late March. A few broke loose in late May and arrived and 4 were finally delivered this week so hopefully things in that area will get back to normal. One of those buyers was talking with their countries post office and were being told everything is flowing normal so there should be no delay but after 10 weeks in the system the package finally arrived to him. I have had no problem with the International first class tracking and it kept me pretty up to date but it updated faster on Stamps.com where I print my shipping labels then it did on the USPS website. As for Ebay... I don't have a plan b that will work better for me. I had my own website for a bit but too hard to draw traffic in. I sell some items on facebook but ebay still works best for me. Understand though that I'm not like some of you and most of my items sell for less than $10 so my money is made in volume sales and not hundreds of dollars made on the sale of one great poster. Regardless of where or how you are selling I wish you the best. Rick On Saturday, June 27, 2020, 09:22:29 AM CDT, Michael Greenwood wrote: Good for you! Re: [MOPO] I just said good-bye to my ebay store
Actually, shipping from Germany to most countries is more or less back to normal again, EXCEPT the US, of course. There are still severe restrictions and additional fees and delivery can take forever. I checked on one package earlier this week, and after more than three weeks, it looks like it has not even reached the US yet. For more expensive posters, I have been more and more shifting to UPS and DHL Express. It costs me a good deal of money, but at least my buyers receive their order in a reasonable time frame. Re: [MOPO] I just said good-bye to my ebay store
We use the Ebay Global Shipping program, and it is very easy for sellers. Plus my inventory travels insured, so everyone's money is protected. Plus I don't have to fill out a lot of customs forms. Ebay Global Shipping is run by Pitney Bowes for Ebay, and yes, it is more expensive. Yes, it takes some time. When shipping internationally becomes easier, we will consider using the Post Office here. Meanwhile, in the U.S. the Trump administration wants to abolish the Post Office. This is the TRUTH. Secondly, almost all governments add duties to purchases of old movie posters. Many buyers want to buy a poster for $150, and have ME tell the authorities that they bought it for $20. These buyers may not know this, or appreciate it, but this puts both the seller and the buyer at risk for significant fines. It's dishonest, and I won't do it. International buyers can buy from our own website, but insurance is limited. Buyers may SAY that it OK for posters to travel entirely at their own risk, but when something actually gets lost, it's a different story. Sorry, Kirby, but I and a lot of others here in the UK think eBay's Global Shipping Program is a total rip-off. I refuse to buy from any seller who insists I use it. This might be a good place to plug the Vintage Movie Poster Auction Group. It is a private Facebook auction group... Rick lists in our group. Facebook.com/groups/369678630544953/ It might be too Wild West for some... Free listings and it’s all on the buyer-seller. Buyer beware! Seller beware! I want to make clear that I don't blame sellers for using ebay as it obviously has its advantages as far as reaching customers and doubly so for the little guy out there. I'm just listing grievances I have against ebay greed practices, as normal, and the global shipping is certainly one of the worst money grabs they've implemented. My recent experiences (and I understand they're exacerbated by the pandemic) are certainly making me lean towards siding with Tommy here. Shipping from the US is nearly finished for me (especially in the weightier record collecting field) in the altogether but definitely paying for it through ebay's global shipping is a mistake I am soon going to stop making! I'm happy to see a few oldtimers still slinging paper there and shipping as normal. And I don't blame seller like Kirby from using an easier system either. But sellers should always lie about value...it just makes it more fun for everybody! Re: [MOPO] I just said good-bye to my ebay store
I decided to do a little dealing in movie posters after I retired, admittedly more as a hobby than a business and just to keep me occupied. I set up my own website and ran it for a couple of years, eschewing eBay, and was lucky if I sold double figures in a year. I was eventually persuaded (by my adult sons) to sign up for an eBay store, and sales quadrupled almost immediately. I find there is a lot I don't like about eBay, but it does seem to generate business. I can understand why 'seasoned dealers' like Rich don't like it, but then again many traditional retailers have found internet competition not to their liking. Also, I have sent posters from U.K. across the world, including U.S.A., and found it relatively trouble free and not too expensive, but then maybe that's just the Royal Mail. Re: [MOPO] I just said good-bye to my ebay store
I have been on ebay since 1998 and have had two stores for many years. The bulk of my business is through my website but I have always felt that it is good to have ebay as a backup. There have been many changes to ebay over the years and they have often made life very difficult for sellers. One of the most incomprehensible changes happened when they decided to take a commission out of postage charges. Many sellers couldn’t believe that they could do this but they have continued with it for a long time and I still think it is morally reprehensible. In recent times, Paypal have made an equally unfair decision to keep fees when a seller has to refund a customer. So, if a seller has to send a refund to a customer because he thought he was buying a DVD instead of poster, Paypal do not refund their fees. The latest “innovation” is ebay plus where sellers get higher visibility by providing Free Shipping, Express post and one day handling. Of course, many sellers have just increased their prices to absorb the free shipping. I don’t like the global shipping system and won’t buy anything that uses it. It means higher postage costs and longer delivery times and takes control from the seller so it doesn’t suit me at all. Shipping from Australia to the US has been greatly affected by Covid and there have been significant delays. I have found that buyers have been very understanding but one particular buyer lodged a case with ebay against me over a delay and I was pleasantly surprised that ebay were very understanding and sided in my favour. My sales on ebay have exceeded 7 figures over the years so despite all of the rule changes and glitches, I will continue to use them and try and adapt as best I can. Kirby, Germany only charges an import tax for movie posters, but no custom duties. Since I run a business, those import charges are fully refundable for me. Yet, when you ship through ebay‘s GSP, I pay those duties to Pitney Bowes and they are not refundable to me. For all I know, they simply vanish. In fact, I have always wondered where that money is ending up. I very much doubt that the German government ever sees any of it. [MOPO] Aw: Re: [MOPO] I just said good-bye to my ebay store
Kirby, I was wondering, are you really sure that your goods are insured with the GSP, or do you just ASSUME that they are? The only courier service I know of that actually covers high-priced movie posters is DHL Express. All others have a disclaimer that excludes collectibles, works of art and so forth. UPS makes it very clear in their ToS: They do not insure collectibles AND they are under no obligation to tell you this when they take your insurance money. As to the customs paperwork: Filling the export declaration for anything under $2,500 takes about 30 seconds and requires no special knowledge. All you have to do is put in is ‚Poster Print’ and the value, nothing to it. For more expensive goods, it does get somewhat complicated indeed. Helmut Gesendet: Samstag, 27. [MOPO] Aw: Re: [MOPO] I just said good-bye to my ebay store
Tommy, back in the 1990s, when ebay first started out, that was exactly the idea: To give small hobby or part-time sellers a platform to buy and sell, basically an online flea market. In the beginning, it was nothing short of amazing. Looking at ebay today, it feels like that was ages ago. These days, if they could only get away with it, I have no doubt ebay would love to get rid of private sellers like you. Small time sellers are just too much hassle and not enough money. Keep in mind, their big role model is Amazon. Amazon has long established Amazon Pay, so it was only a matter of time until the empty suits at ebay would copy that idea and they would make another attempt with a self-owned payment service. And it will only be a matter of time until they ban Paypal and make their own payment service mandatory. It has happended before, when they used to ban sellers that offered Paypal in their listings. When it was clear that they could not win that battle, they eventually purchased Paypal. In the last few years, ebay has generated less than 10% of my business, and a lot less of my annual profit. So far, it still seemed worth it, especially as there was very little work involved. But now they are planning yet ANOTHER round of new REGULATIONS and REQUIREMENTS and what not. Enough is enough, and that was the breaking point for me. Helmut Gesendet: Sonntag, 28. My feeling exactly. I can't see why they'd want the bother of all that processing but maybe that's the justification for extra costs.
