Good points, Holiday!

Someone should make a movie about all the intolerance there is in the world.
Oh wait, someone already did! Maybe Quenton Tarrantino can do a
modern re-make (that is one movie I would likely avoid).

Do you really not understand them, or you just don't agree with them?

I don't collect Star Wars either, but I certainly understand the influence
it had on my generation, the movies that followed and the fact that people
are attracted to it on a visceral level.

I believe James Bond had a similar influence on the generation before mine,
and Godzilla.well he's just the king. ;-)

Re: [MOPO] My question to 300+ of you: Why are you a lurker on MoPo?

2009-06-04 Thread Heidi Herr
Hi! I must say that I am a mere lurker simply because as someone
relatively new to collecting film paper (it’s been about two years), I do
not feel I have much to add to the various conversations. Plus, between
work and going back to school to receive one of the nerdiest of all degrees,
a masters in library sciences, I’m rather short on time!

Also, my collection is all over the place because I purchase posters and
lobby cards based on the artwork, and not the star or title (though I do own
a few pieces for movies I adore, like Lubitsch’s One Hour With You, Godard’s
MadeinUSA and Morrissey’s Women in Revolt), so I really don’t have a field
of expertise within the hobby. As for movies themselves, my favorites tend
to be silent flicks, pre-codes , and 1960’s art house/ New Wave features, none
of which seem to necessarily be huge points of interest for the active
contributors to MOPO. Real quick -- I guess I should clarify – when I say
“my” collection I really mean the collection I have started with my husband.
And believe it or not, we never argue over buying posters – we both
genuinely believe they are one of life’s necessities!

Anyway, despite my lurker status, I love reading the comments left by others
as I’ve found most of them to be quite informative and even sometimes
downright groovy!

Thanks, Bruce. You're one of the few people on this list that has
tolerance for just about any collecting interest. If more folks like
you participated in the discussions, more folks like me would also
participate I think.

I collect mostly modern and hypermodern posters for movies that would
obviously be shunned by the majority of those on this list. While I
respect anyone for the right to express their opinion on any subject,
I find that most on the list are intolerant of other's opinions. That
leads, of course, to the many fights that seem to break out. For me,
MOPO is basically a spectator sport.

But, there is a germ of usefulness that warrants my sifting through
the posts on a daily basis.

Here's an opinion for all of you to chew on: the modern world does
not belong to us. It belongs to the generation coming up behind us.
When you ask "why are there no young collectors at cinevent" or some
such, it's because you have lost touch with the modern world. Through
my two teenage children, I'm able to keep up by paying attention to
what they think is cool, is "in" and what they think looks or sounds
beautiful. It forges a great relationship between us, and I find more
interesting their view of the world versus the view of a few cronies
that are self-absorbed in their own collecting to such an extent that
they would sweep aside movie making over the past 40 years as
basically irrelevant.

i agree with that premise.? however, i would say it differently...? any
great poster from a great movie of the 30s,40s as far more impressive than a
poster of the 60s+?

i still dont understand the high values placed on 007, star wars, japanese art

maybe, my prejudice is just that artistically, i love the well filmed b&w
movies.? sure, i love great surround sound films or?a great "modern movie"?,
but i wouldnt want the posters for them

I don't, as a rule, have much of value to contribute to discussions on
posters, at least
not with dealers or hard core collectors. I collect 16mm films, and will
buy some advertising
art to display for each of the films in my collection. I don't have the
wall space for more than a couple of 1 sheets,

but I do like title cards, and have quite a few of them scattered about.

I find some of the debates fun to read, but there are so many strong
opinions, and many of them

ill-informed - that offering some commentary would just not be productive.

Also - my personal tastes are not in line with the apparent collective
thinking
of the group. I think a graphically beautiful insert from a 1937 Monogram
picture

has greater value that a pristine one sheet from Breakfast at Tiffany's.

Also, I place no value on posters from films made in the last 30 - 40
years, probably because, for the most part, I
place no value on the movies made during that time period. I can't watch
bad movies, there just
isn't enough time - I don't think Ed Wood produced enjoyable films - just
bad ones - and I haven't

seen all the good movies out there yet, so why waste my time.

Also I generally shun movies (and pop culture) that achieved the highest
accolades from the general
public. for example - movies I just don't like include: 2001, My Fair
Lady, Lawrence of Arabia, How the

West was Won, Gone with the wind, Maltese Falcon (1941), Fantasia

movies I think are under-rated include: John Wayne's Alamo (but ONLY the
full version - preferably the

Laser), All I Want For Christmas, Once Upon A Time, Port of Seven Seas.

My Favorite films (and just cause I like 'em, does not mean I think they
are great movies):
Rhubarb, About Face, Inherit the Wind, A Matter of Life and Death, Maltese
Falcon (1931),

It Happened Tomorrow

These are in no way comprehensive lists, but are offered to give some idea
on how my tastes run, and how
different they are from the "conventional wisdom". Its the same with
music - I could listen to Mario Lanza
all day long - I find luciano pavarotti over blown. I prefer Norman
Rockwell to Picasso, Rembrant to Van Gough
and just about anybody to Keanu Reeves (the black hole of cinema). I
believe Will Farrell is as funny as
a cry for help, and Britney Spears is as entertaining as watching paint
dry.

so it goes

now you see why I keep my mouth shut (metaphorically typing :-)?

Re: [MOPO] My question to 300+ of you: Why are you a lurker on MoPo?

2009-06-04 Thread William A Brent
I don't, as a rule, have much of value to contribute to discussions
on posters, at least
not with dealers or hard core collectors. I collect 16mm films, and
will buy some advertising
art to display for each of the films in my collection. I don't have
the wall space for more than a couple of 1 sheets,

but I do like title cards, and have quite a few of them scattered about.

I find some of the debates fun to read, but there are so many strong
opinions, and many of them

ill-informed - that offering some commentary would just not be productive.

Also - my personal tastes are not in line with the apparent collective thinking
of the group. I think a graphically beautiful insert from a 1937
Monogram picture

has greater value that a pristine one sheet from Breakfast at Tiffany's.

Also, I place no value on posters from films made in the last 30 - 40
years, probably because, for the most part, I
place no value on the movies made during that time period. I can't
watch bad movies, there just
isn't enough time - I don't think Ed Wood produced enjoyable films -
just bad ones - and I haven't

seen all the good movies out there yet, so why waste my time.

Also I generally shun movies (and pop culture) that achieved the
highest accolades from the general
public. for example - movies I just don't like include: 2001, My Fair
Lady, Lawrence of Arabia, How the

West was Won, Gone with the wind, Maltese Falcon (1941), Fantasia

movies I think are under-rated include: John Wayne's Alamo (but ONLY
the full version - preferably the

Laser), All I Want For Christmas, Once Upon A Time, Port of Seven Seas.

My Favorite films (and just cause I like 'em, does not mean I think
they are great movies):
Rhubarb, About Face, Inherit the Wind, A Matter of Life and Death,
Maltese Falcon (1931),

It Happened Tomorrow
