You should also try donorschoose.com. You can put up a proposal up there and
random people will give towards it.

2008-09-05 Thread elisa kifer
Sue,
Where are you? I am in Arkansas, and I just recently received a $3,000
grant from the Rockefeller Foundation and the Humanities Council. I learned
about the availability of the grant through a representative from the
Secretary of State. You might could check there to see if there are some
funds from your state that you may not have heard about. Over the past
couple of years, I have also received several grants through our school's
PTSA and our district's Education Foundation. Does your school have any
funds through these organization? I am a grant writing fool! It pays off!
I have probably gotten about 1,000 books for my classroom in the last two
years! Good Luck! Elisa

Do you have a book roon? You can support a lot classrooms with much less money.
We have almost 2000 titles in our book room for grades K-5. We were able to add
lots of leveled books for very little money with a single subscription to

[MOSAIC] Linda Dorn's Comprehensive Intervention Model

2008-09-05 Thread Luann McVey
Hi, Susan,

Thank you for your response to my posting about Linda Dorn's
Comprehensive Intervention Model. They've moved the webcast link
from the Reading Recovery home page to the following page: http://
www.readingrecovery.org/development/web_conference/index.asp.

Unfortunately, Reading Recovery requires a registration fee to view
each webcast. The webcast is well worth the money - it includes a
Power Point presentation and video clips detailing the use of an
assessment wall that have helped us to visualize how this alternative
RtI model looks.

Thanks for your interest.

looking for a fiction or nonfiction novel as a companion to Red Scarf Girl

like a title which would be more appealing to the boys in their classes.
The other caveat is that they want the subject matter to pertain to no later

Anyone have any suggestions?

[MOSAIC] another question

Does anyone have a list of good questions that I can attach to the
inside of my students' reading response journals? I teach 6th grade.
Thanks! Sue

I have my kids reading and responding in their readers' notebooks. Their

response could be a question that I have given them or they might just
be
recording their thinking. I used to do the letter thing but it was too
many letters
to respond to and they thought it was the only way to respond to what
they've read. I too felt like I was killing the enthusiasm for reading.
It sure
killed my love of letter writing!

Hi. I'm writing a grant for picture books for the different
strategies. I'd like to have a decent amount of these books in my
classroom library so that the students may read them too. Do you
know what picture books would be appropriate for second graders to
read independently? I'm getting my list from the documents on the

Thanks for your help!

Another short text argument is that you guarantee wide exposure in terms of
genre and author. With our struggling population, wide exposure means we are
more likely to hit upon the trigger, the hook, the real reader bear trap!

Re: [MOSAIC] text length

2008-09-05 Thread ljackson
My take is that short pieces are terrific for modeling, but that short
pieces can also include wet-your-whistle excerpts. When whole class access
counts, short text make for easy differentiation as you can vary text
difficulty and for striving readers, 3 pages of pushing hard is doable where
as 300 results in shutdown or acting out. All that said, endurance is
import and book clubs matter. SSR is so important...

Nancy Boyles also has a great book, "Great Answers". She goes through each of
the strands on our CT CMT and offers books based on those strands.

Check out A Field Guide to the Classroom Library C (for grades 1 and 2) by Lucy
Calkins, published by Heinemann. I think it's just what you're looking
for.

Re: [MOSAIC] RtI comment + New ?

2008-09-05 Thread Jennifer Olimpieri
Does anyone have the name of a resource to give students different topics or
direction for what they are writing in their readers notebooks? I am in a new
position  as reading consultant and am looking for help with grades 3-5. Thanks

I have my kids reading and responding in their readers' notebooks. Their
response could be a question that I have given them or they might just be
recording their thinking. I used to do the letter thing but it was too many
letters
to respond to and they thought it was the only way to respond to what
they've read. I too felt like I was killing the enthusiasm for reading. It
sure
killed my love of letter writing!

I have my kids read independently while I work with groups and/or

I change
this because I'm so afraid of killing their love of reading!) and I

to it. I may tweak it again this year as I have 25 kids and that's a lot
of
letters for me to write! I model my letter after the Fountas and Pinnel
first 30 days, too.

What do you all have your students do while you are working in small guided
