Understand by Design is by Grant Wiggins. Basically it's a form of
curriculum mapping where you set an essential questions for what you want
students to learn and then enduring understandings. My district is going
this route for lesson planning next year.

Re: [MOSAIC] SIPPS

2012-02-26 Thread Stein, Ellen H.
We use SIPPS in a much more structured way. The theory is if we don't use the
script provided with the program we have no check on whether the "program"
worked. Having purchased this and other interventions with title 1 funds, we
need accountability as to whether it worked or not. If we don't use them with
fidelity we don't know the reason for the success or failure.

a program because I just use and adapt what is appropriate for my students. I
meet with each group for only about 15 minutes, and I have found that it is
very easy for me to build on when I am conferring in reader's and writer's

Many times we have our students focus on the same skill, in their "reading

Lit circles are good. I do think some kids can handle several books at once
however. Part of building vocab requires readers to read and read and read.
Voracious reading as it is called. Common Core promotes lots of reading as
well. I do not like to stifle a students desire to read either. Some students
can get books confused with each other however. Some students can better handle
it than others. The skill of being able to handle reading and thinking through
multiple texts is a skill students need to develop to be successful in high
school and college.

Hi

I'd be interested in haring more about apps people recommend. my class is third
grade. My student who has learning needs at a k-level has found the iPad to be
an amazing motivater. Different apps that are a game format motivate him. Apps
that provide read-a-long such as from meegenius (free app with some free books)
are great because it is a child reader and each word is highlighted. I know
flash cards are not a preferred teaching tool but using flash cards plus (free
app) we've inputted decks of cards for the student to review. With voice over
turned on, the word can be read for reinforcement. The iDevice can just be
shook to shuffle the deck. Bingo games can be done with a friend or against the
iPad.

Kindergartenappa nd grade one app offer lots of review material.

These are not for primary instruction but are fun reinformcement that offer
visuals and sounds and game format that can be a nice few minutes reward. The
student would be reluctant to pick up a book but will do so on the iPad.

Little speller is a motivater for some stronger spellers

We've been scanning resources in via the photocopier, creating pdf files which
we can label right off our photocopier and e-mail tot he iPad.

I created a hotmail account for ease of sending pdfs.

There is a sort of utility app called good reader I think or good read, but I
think it is the prior. It is a grat utility used in conjunction with pdfs we
have made because we can change font and students can interact and change
colour (only one colour change though).

If there is insufficient space to write one simply does a pincer grip andpulls
finger and thumb a part to create additional writing space.

An app called art set (99 cents) allows children to select different tools such
as paint brush, thin tipped marker, thick marker, coloured pencil etc and to
work in different forums. This can be great fun to motivate writing ideas. We
typically take something someone draws on art set and e-mail it to our class
account and then go to our classroom blog and post it for all to enjoy.

It can motivate students to put their story right on their blog or do
separately to go with their picture.

We have found lots of different apps to go along with our math, Science and
Social Stuides as well. For example, today the children were introduced to the
task of discerning the names of capital cities, provinces and territories in
Canada and were trying to figure out what was what. Checking the app store,
sure enough there is fa fun app called mapme Canada which will use game format
to encourage cchildren to learn to read the names of these places in our nation.

I can't recall apps off the top of my head right now and I loaned my iPad to a
colleague tonight as her child was learning about capitals, provinces and
territories in a different school and she took it home to let her child review.

Some of the children have been struggling with the basics of becoming more
consistent with putting capitals and correct end punctuation. An app called
sentence builder has been a fun app to determine what i

(my own personal one, not a school one) that I would LOVE to use at work
(instead of my OLD laptop that the school signed out to me.) I'm not sure how
or if this would work. Thanks!

Subject: Re: [MOSAIC] ipad apps for language arts

An app called
sentence builder has been a fun app to determine what is and is not a sentence.

Even a game of scrabble hooked into the projection screen can be fun. The
children will also ahve out their white boards and markers to be thinking of
different words of different lengths and differing letter cubes.

Not language related but math bingo that incorporated various levels of
difficulty and covers addition, subtraction, multiplication and division done
separately or in random questions has been a fun practice.
I'm still pretty new to figuring it all out but the children figure this all
out really quickly.

Unfortunately I don't have the luxury of piloting and I just have my personal
iPad i

Students who are two or more levels behind the monthly target are the students
who we focus on for extra intervention. This could be in the form of after
school tutoring, extra small group instruction with the teacher or a reading
specialist.

Re: [MOSAIC] Reader's Workshop Research

2011-10-01 Thread Stein, Ellen H.
Drop Everything And Read= D.E.A.R. Time. My concern with this is that teachers
usually assign 15-20 minutes of DEAR time and the students are supposed to do
just thatg; Drop Everything and Read. But, how do we know they are reading.?
How do we know they are thinkng about what they're reading? I believe there
should be some accaountability; perhaps routine individual conferencing to
check for understanding. What about a strategy focus for the time and sharing
of that strategy when DEAR time is over. By itself, we rfeally can't tell if
students are really reading.

phonics, auditory processing, and literature-based instruction to create a
streamlined, multi-sensory program that includes immediate reading
application with high interest, phonetically controlled books" created by
Stephen Tattum and the Denver Academy. One of the parents at my school is

basal readers. I do remember we did alot of writing.

Thank you to everyone who has asked for copies of my articles on reciprocal
teaching and Collaborative Reading Workshop. I can send through the PDFs so
you can make up your own reciprocal teaching kits if you like. It is really
inexpensive to make them up and they include five different questioning options
to support higher order thinking. The reciprocal teaching kits bring together
the reciprocal teaching research, the active comprehension research and the
student-generated questioning research. I can send you through my article that
was published last year about them and also the PDFs if you want to make up
your own kits. I would love to hear from anyone in the US who implements them.

I am currently studying my PhD around the teaching of reading, so I am totally
into this. The Collaborative Reading Workshop process is so simple, but so
incredibly powerful for supporting students to see reading as thinking and to
generate their own questions, wonderings and connections. Please email me off
the list if you want a copy of the articles or the PDFs. kme...@eq.edu.au

There is a book I got from another teacher, who gave it to me when I started
after my student teaching. It is called "What If There Were No Teachers."
Also, there is a poem I gave one of my graduating teacher friends entitled "10
Things All Teachers Need" or "Teacher Survival Kit." You can include things
in it like a

 - Kleenex
 - A marble
 - A band-aid
 - A rubber band
 - A crayon

Another site for classroom libraries is referenced in this nice "Creating a
Classroom" article on Reading Rockets:
http://www.readingrockets.org/article/29298

The article references the online service at:
http://www.librarything.com/

I have not used this resource, but recalled some conversations with people
that did and really like it.

My caution to educators is to make sure you test any of these referenced
sites and also let your administrator(s) and tech people know what you want
to achieve by using these services.

One more idea that I thought of is to use a classroom blog. I won't go into
links or providers. You could create a blog with you (teacher) as owner and
then create a secondary user (contributor). Students would use the secondary
user/contributor to create book info. Teacher/owner would have to "approve"
all the entries. In blog I would see a teacher setting up various categories
for books.

In a blog like this, you could also allow for "comments" which would include
your students or other that want to add "their voice" to the book into. Of
course, the teacher/owner can set comments so that they must have approval
before being posted on the site. The key idea would be that the teachers
must approve anything before it is posted on the blog.

We run Word Press "MU" (multiple user) for blogs at the
http://www.literacyworkshop.org website .
This is "free" software that could
easily be integrated by schools. If you have questions or want help on this
you can email me off-list.

I'm not real familiar with the Observation Survey (know what it is, but
haven't used it since teaching K several years ago), don't know DRA, but am
familiar with Johns reading inventory. I have used PALS in Kgn and 2nd grade
(they're different formats). Our county requires us to use PALS at the
beginning of the year for K-3, mid-year for students that are below grade
level, and end of year for all of K-2 and 3rd graders who are below grade
level.

PALS in K: alphabet recognition, letter/sound (you point to a letter, the
child makes the sound--short sounds for vowels, also includes ch, sh, th,
qu), concept of print (one-to-one, left-to-right, word finding)--these are
assessed after you teach the child a short rhyme (Rain Rain Go Away, e.g.)
using pictures then a small book, spelling (5 CVC words, after doing an
example w/ the child--the alphabet is printed across the top of the
recording sheet), auditory rhyming (choosing from 3 pictures to find the one
that rhymes w/ the first picture), auditory beginning sounds (same format as
rhyming). Spelling is scored: they get a point for each correct feature
(correct blend, vowel pattern, etc) and another point for spelling the word
correctly. All scores are combined to give a summed score, and there is a
benchmark (different for beginning, middle & end of year).

PALS in 1-3: word lists (Preprimer, primer, 1st-6th), based on results of
word lists choose a reading passage for child to read with 6 comprehension
questions after (child must read 15 words to "pass" and get the reading
passage for that level--child continues w/ word lists until fewer than 15
words are read on a list). Child continues reading passages until he/she
reaches instructional level. In 1st grade, if he/she can't read enough words
on the preprimer, there is an alphabet recognition & letter/sound assessment
similar to the K PALS. There is also a spelling component--1st grade 15
words maybe? 2nd grade 20 and 3rd grade 25. These correlate with the Words
Their Way Developmental Spelling Inventory (same folks, or some of the same,
who developed Words Their Way did the same w/ PALS--out of Univ. of VA).
Words start with CVC, include some beginning & ending blends & digraphs,
move on into long vowel spelling patterns, "other" spelling patterns (oi,
aw). The word list & spelling inventory combine to give a "summed score" and
there is a benchmark (different for different times of year).

I think that's everything!

Would you be willing to share a word sort and exactly what you say

(explicit instruction) as you introduce it. I really am not sure I am

doing it right after all of this time. I never thought to ask

someone to demonstrate online. Thank you.

kindergarten/first grade students. I would suggest using the book Dear Juno by
Soyung Pak. It is in our third grade Treasures (McMillan/McGraw reading series)
and also available through Amazon. It is about an little boy that has a
grandmother living in Korea. His grandmother sends him a letter written in
Korean which he can't read. He asks his mother to read it to him, but she is
too busy so he tries to figure out what his grandmother wrote him. Luckily
grandma drew a few pictures and sent him a picture. Based on these clues he is
able to figure out the content of the letter. When his mother finally reads the
letter to him, his inferences are confirmed. It is a very effective and
transparent book to teach inferring. Barb

Re: [MOSAIC] Seasonal activities

2009-12-03 Thread Stein, Ellen H.
I also have been the lone Jewish teacher but I made it my business to share my
holiday with the students. We made latkes and doughnuts, "lit" candles daily
for eight days, told the Maccabee story , etc. Other teachers covered my class
while I visited their classes with my story. I (and they) shared the winter
holiday season with ALL the holidays that come at that time of the year.

Please remember that not everyone in your class may celebrate Christmas. As
the one Jewish teacher in my school I often feel frustrated by the focus on
Christmas-themed activities and worksheets this time of year. (And paying
acknowledgment that Hannukah and Kwanza occur around the same time as Christmas
does not mean that the teacher has been inclusive so now they can do all sorts
of other Christmas activites.)

I don't know what grade you are talking about but one year with my
Kindergartners I read aloud five different Christmas or winter-oriented
books by Jan Brett and then we made a graph showing which was our
favorite one person, one vote. It was a bar graph; each child got a
square to add to the bar under a picture of the book they liked best.

Have them paint (or draw) a picture of their family at Christmas and
write about it.

We use DIBELS and use the retell section as a guide to comprehension. We can
assess the difference by noting whether the students did a word by word

Re: [MOSAIC] comprehension

2009-10-11 Thread Stein, Ellen H.
We have found that modeling the "think aloud" strategy is very helping in
getting kids to "think about their thinking." In the modeling, the teacher
thinks aloud about a sentence or two that he has read to see what prior
knowledge the reader (modeler) brings to the text. Then we ask ourselves about
the passage to make sense of the text; aseries of thought (outloud) that say,
"I wonder," or "what if.," "I think" We've used the MOT strategies as well
as those of Debbie Miller (REading With Meaning) Tanny McGregor's Classroom
Connections and The Comprehension Toolkit. All wonderful resources for teachers.

raising the student's comprehension of daily reading and application to testing?

Our district is using the DIBELS assessment - fast, easy screening tool. We use
it on Palm pilots so the only paper used is the student copy. The test is
completely scored on the Palm. It makes it very easy to administer and you have
instant results - high risk, some risk, low risk, progress graphs, etc. There
are benchmark materials so progress goals are set for each individual; the
students, teachers and parents can clearly see if the student is progressing
appropriately or not. It is for k-6 and has been a great tool used by all the
teachers for planning instruction, targeting needs, and conferences with
parents. It is a screening tool, not a diagnostic assessment.

If kids have books have a selection of books they can read independently, they
are much more willing to choice from a topic (sports) or any genre they like.
The key is to have books students can read independently (without struggling)

that I was going to wait until the end of Sept when they tally the amount of
books they have read in Aug/Sept and then I will decide. They have a sheet in
their notebooks that lists the genres and they have to tally what they read.
I am not sure as to how many books I will require them to read. I want to

What about our ESL kids? I am eager to "read" the conversations you have on

This seems to be an issue for all of us. Of course, the longer you teach
the more familiar you will become with the books that are in your library.
But in the meantime,
1. Have students mark places that have helped them get to know a character
2. have readers marks spots that indicate a movement in time
3. have readers make predictions and mark places that support that
prediction
4. have readers put post its on places that allow them to create mental
images.
And so on

Then of course, provide short texts with which you ARE familiar (at
independent levels) and use them for a quick assessment.

Hope that helps a bit.

I also believe silent independent reading is key...however, with a caveat.

1. To be sure students are actually reading during that time, we need to
conference with them daily just for a minute or two to check for comprehension.

2. A "Jot Journal" to write a sentence about what they read today.

3. Make sure students are reading at their indendent level.

understand the importance of reading daily and want this information to
reach them at the earliest time of year. Most of my parents attend open
house since it's a time when they get to meet their child's teacher and get
answers to any questions they may have. In September, our school offers a
Curriculum night however, most kindergarten parents do not attend. I don't
want to insult any of my parents and any advice is greatly appreciated!

Re: [MOSAIC] reading help for second grade

2009-07-08 Thread Stein, Ellen H.
The questions asked in the JGB program are wonderful. But we shouldn't ask
those kinds of questions JUST to the highly able! All of our kids can't read
but the can all think. We need to give them more opportunities to do higher
level thinking.

This past year in second grade I used the Junior Great Books program. This
was for my above kids and I was blessed to have a mom that worked with that
group twice a week. It was great because all the higher level work was
scribed there. The kids seemed to enjoy having their own special books and I
noticed more connections in their discussions too.

I would like to join the weekly strategy, but I would also like the
"stuff" and "worksheets" that teachers use to see what the students
are thinking.

Thanks,

Re: [MOSAIC] Mentor Texts

2009-06-10 Thread Stein, Ellen H.
Our district supports 6+1 Trait Wring so I've attached a list of mentor texts
for the Idea trait. These are great books are great for any trait but are used
to model exemplary writing.

Re: [MOSAIC] weekly strategy study

2009-06-08 Thread Stein, Ellen H.
Included in lessons could be how to engage kids in the thinking about the text.
If you've seen Comprehension Connections, by Tanny McGregor, they share
specific activities that are engaging and interactive, where kids are "doing"
while they're thinking.

I'd like to see this look more like sharing of lessons rather than stuff
that goes with the lessons. Can we talk about how we learn and
ultimately teach each strategy and not focus on the tools for teaching
them? Otherwise my fear is that we will only scratch the surface which
is exactly the opposite of what we want to do with our teaching.

As a literacy coach, as well as a reading specialist, I'd love to take part in
this! This is the perfect time to "get organized"
