Re: [MOSAIC] RTI- need info
We've noticed that there is a ton of interventions available for reading but not many for math. How your district is deciding which kids need interventions sounds a lot like how my district decides for reading. Yes, it is very possible for several students in your class to have individual plans. I had individual reading plans for 13 of my 19 kids this past school year. It can get overwhelming, but I've learned to keep up with the documentation. Keep records of all grades and be more specific with your gradebook. Instead of simply writing down the assignment page number write down the assignment objective or something that will spark your memory when you sit down to place grades on your plans. My kids complete the SuccessMaker program daily, so I keep detailed records of what they are doing and their scores from the program. If you have access to a computer program for reading or math, check out the reports the program can give you because they help a lot. I'll admit that the whole process is time consuming especially for us regular ed teachers that weren't use to writing and documenting individual plans for so many kids, but it does get easier once you find an organizational method that works for you. As to finding more information about RTI, there are a lot of websites about it. One site is www.interventioncentral.com. ___ Mosaic mailing list Mosaic@literacyworkshop.org To unsubscribe or modify your membership please go to http://literacyworkshop.org/mailman/options/mosaic_literacyworkshop.org. Re: [MOSAIC] RTI
We just completed our 4th year with RTI implementation. Your last sentence says it all - It seems that we'd need to be very creative in finding the time and personnel to implement this plan. Everyone in our building is actively involved with helping the students. We also have a lot of paperwork that needs to be completed for each student. Our first step is to refer a student to our Student Assistance Team (SAT). Then a caseworker from the SAT meets with the teachers involved to discuss the student before the whole SAT gets involved. After that we try several interventions for each student depending on his/her needs. Our universal screening tool was the DIBELS test (next year we'll be using AIMSWeb). For any student scoring below benchmark on DIBELS the classroom teacher had to write a Student Improvement Plan. These plans are very involved. The classroom teacher writes goals for each student and then monitors the student's progress. The SIP are looked at and modified as the student meets the goals. I'm sure there is a lot of our RTI plan that I've forgotten to write about, so if you have any specific questions please just ask. I'll answer them as completely as I can. ___ Mosaic mailing list Mosaic@literacyworkshop.org To unsubscribe or modify your membership please go to http://literacyworkshop.org/mailman/options/mosaic_literacyworkshop.org. Re: [MOSAIC] Colorado website
I think this might be the website you're looking for: http://curriculum.dpsk12.org/elp_elem_lit_prog.htm A while back there was reference of a Colorado school's website. I found so many useful resource on the website--they had mapping at each grade level and then the scope and sequence that strategies were taught at each grade level district wide. I printed everything I wanted and then lost the website, but since then have bragged about this site continuously for all of it's usefulness, and now can't pass it on! Re: [MOSAIC] lit circles/guided reading????
I think there are differences and similarities between guided reading and literature circles. To begin with, during GR the text is picked by the teacher were as during literature circles I try to have the students have as much say in what they read as possible. But, after that I think the two are very similar to one another. During literature circles the teacher can steer the discussion to topics/concepts that she feels are needed. My principal says that in the primary grades teachers use GR and in the intermediate grades we should use literature circles. ___ Mosaic mailing list Mosaic@literacyworkshop.org To unsubscribe or modify your membership please go to http://literacyworkshop.org/mailman/options/mosaic_literacyworkshop.org. Re: [MOSAIC] rti conversation
AIMSweb is similar to DIBELS but has a lot more information. It gives information on reading and math - along with reading comprehension and math problem solving. It does have a progress monitoring component. We've been using DIBELS for the past several years and next year are switching to AIMSweb because it has so much more and doesn't cost much more - I think it's $5 per student. ___ Mosaic mailing list Mosaic@literacyworkshop.org To unsubscribe or modify your membership please go to http://literacyworkshop.org/mailman/options/mosaic_literacyworkshop.org. I didn't realize that the benchmarks set for DIBELS are only at the 35%ile. I wonder why they wouldn't set them higher than that because they seem kind of low to me. Re: [MOSAIC] rti conversation
For us DIBELS costs $2 per student. How do you get it free? Here's a link to the reading comprehension sample http://www.aimsweb.com/uploaded/files/sample_maze.pdf If the link doesn't work, I found it by clicking on the measures tab and then the sample tab (found under the test name in the middle of the screen). The comprehension part is a cloze activity. I have not looked extensively at AIMS web, but since dibels is free, $5 is a lot for us. Re: [MOSAIC] Reading is Thinking
I did something this year that has really helped my 5th grade class. We've been sharing our thinking using wordless picture books. I have been amazed at the discussions. The only problem I'm having is that they are not transferring their skills to the books they are reading. It's as if the words in the books are confusing them. Re: [MOSAIC] RTI
I'm curious to know what will you use as your universal screening tool if you don't use DIBELS? Will it be AIMSWeb? We're using DIBELS and it's just not enough. Our kids need screened for reading comprehension and math and the DIBELS just doesn't do that. Our school psychologist is pushing for DIBELS, but after using it briefly and reading the book by Elaine Garan where she addresses valid reasons for not using it, I'm hoping we won't. ___ Mosaic mailing list Mosaic@literacyworkshop.org To unsubscribe or modify your membership please go to http://literacyworkshop.org/mailman/options/mosaic_literacyworkshop.org. Re: [MOSAIC] Dibbels Assessments
I'm not sure if it is right or not, but my school assesses students using DIBELS at their grade level. I guess after assessing them at their grade level you can use it as a starting point as to whether go up or down in levels when helping students pick books. First off, I think that you will really enjoy 5th graders and the depth that they can go into topics. Secondly, there is a yahoo group for just 5th grade teachers. It's called Fifth Grade Teachers. The teachers there are extremely helpful (just like this group). Have fun with 5th - this is my 11th year with this age. Re: [MOSAIC] appreciating reading
This is the exact problem I am having also. My kids select their own books but they just don't seem to care or want to be held accountable. Something I have just started doing is having adults come in to talk about their lives as readers. I got the idea from the book Still Learning to Read. This past Friday, our school librarian was our first guest speaker and she was wonderful. She gave the kids a description of a typical day for her and all the reading she does. She started off talking about reading the crawler on the bottom of the screen on CNN and continue on to the cereal box. She also shared her favorite book as a kid with the students - Gone With the Wind. She told them that she read it 17 times and that's when one of my boys (one that is always saying reading is stupid) pipes up and says - hey, we talked about the importance of rereading. Well, needless to say, I was excited. Over the weekend, this boy read James and the Giant Peach and convinced his mom to come in to tell the class about her life as a reader. I hope his excitement continues and the others catch it. Re: [MOSAIC] Context Clues
Do you know what page DIBELs is discussed in the document? The Inspector General's Report can be found at this web address. It does not look good for DIBELS and certain book publishers that claim to be Scientifically Research Based! Most are peer reviewed only. Also check out Dick Allington's book, Big Brother and the National Reading Panel. He has dug deeply into the research behind NCLB. I do agree that there are some really great things that have come out of NCLB, but when you look at these resources, you will see evidence of Reading for Profit!!! http://www.ed.gov/about/offices/list/oig/aireports/i13f0017.pdf Kelli Thexton ___ Mosaic mailing list Mosaic@literacyworkshop.org To unsubscribe or modify your membership please go to http://literacyworkshop.org/mailman/options/mosaic_literacyworkshop.org.
