Re: [MOSAIC] Reading Enrichment for Middle School

2011-12-20 Thread Lori.revel
June,
I would stick to all non fiction if possible. I would also level the texts
based on students RIT ranges. A few good sites to start from are Resources for
Idaho teachers. House of Snakes is a real attention getter and there is lots
of info on the web about this real house! Ugh! Depaul also has a site but the
address is at school but maybe you could Google it. Also Kelly Gallager has an
awesome site but preview all texts first for your audience for appropriateness.
Look at Article of the Week. Hope this helps and all is well!

2011-12-20 Thread Amie Brickl
I just got done doing The Sound of Thunder by Ray Bradbury. I found a lesson
on line and adapted it to my needs. I can email it to you if you would like.
Took about 4 days total - but we also needed to work on some other things for
another class. I teach 9th grade students who are non proficient readers.

I have used many stories from the internet with great success.
Classic short stories from authors like Ray Bradbury have really
caught on with the students I work with. Look print them up and let
their imagination work. I usually have them draw pictures to help
the story.

2011-12-15 Thread Diana Rea
I have recently discovered the website Lit2Go. It is a free online
collection of stories and poems in Mp3 (audiobook) format. You can:

   - Download the files to your Mp3 player and listen on the go,
   - Listen to the Mp3 files on your computer,
   - View the text on a webpage and read along as you listen,
   - Print out the stories and poems to make your own book.

You can search by author, title, reading level and subject matter. I also
use Florida Center for Reading Research (FCRR) with RtI groups. It has
complete lessons for the big 5 areas, and it's also free!

I've found that magazines like Cricket have both fiction and non-fiction
pieces that work well for my sixth graders.
Storyworks is from Scholastic - lower level (Maybe 5th?) but has lesson plans
online and a lot of teacher support on the web.
