[mou-net] Eastern Towhee in northern St Louis County
I was surprised again this week when I found a singing Eastern Towhee in Orr, MN. You can listen to a video on the Minnesota Birding Facebook group. (I will share to the MOU Facebook group as well) I remember a few years ago when someone reported an Eastern Towhee by Elephant Lake. I blew it off as a Hermit Thrush because they have a very similar trill sound that they make as a secondary call. The Towhee is still singing now and he has mixed in the Hermit Thrush sounding trill at times. It's fun to hear the different calls. (photos taken by Sandy Kuder, posted in MN Birding Facebook group) This was right at the northern edge of the southern portion of the BWCAW. It was by an open area where the Nigh Creek crosses Forest Road 471. No settlements or open fields for miles around. We also found Common Nighthawk and a family of 6 Ruffed Grouse. There are many Cedar Waxwings in the area too. There will be a bumper crop of Juneberries this year and we found 2 Cedar Waxwing nests in close proximity to the berries. All the regular Wood-warblers that occur in this area are busy feeding nestlings. -- Dee Kuder Crane Lake, MN Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html

[mou-net] Least Bittern - northern St Louis County
This morning I saw a Least Bittern at Crane Lake in northern St Louis County. Last week I heard the bird calling the morning of May 31st. I made a recording of the call with my little point and shoot camera. There were also lots of American Bitterns calling and a Pied-billed Grebe in the distance. I was hearing a pou, pou, pou type call that didn't sound right for a Cuckoo. This morning when I stopped by the same wetland, I immediately heard the bird calling. I waited around for about a half hour intently watching the vegetation. I first saw the bird jump up from the reeds. It was smaller than an American Bittern by far, and also bigger than the Red-winged Blackbirds by comparison. The bird kept calling sporadically and I could hear it getting closer. I made another recording with my little camera that I could upload to youtube later today. Then I saw it fly back into the swamp. I got a good look while it flew away. It was much smaller than an American Bittern and Green Heron. I could see the legs extending out from the back. How unusual is it to see a Least Bittern in northeastern Minnesota? I'm curious if anyone else has seen a Least Bittern this far north and east; at the edge of the BWCA? [mou-net] Wood Thrush in northern St Louis County
While working on my breeding bird block, T66R17a, I found a singing Wood Thrush. And unless he was a ventriloquist, there was another Wood Thrush singing a ways back in the woods on the other side of the road. I was on Forest Road 479C, about 1/2 mile from Co Rd. 24 in an area of mixed forest with a predominance of Tamarack. Too bad they're not in their safe dates yet. Many other Warblers are arriving back at Crane Lake including Mourning and Golden-winged. Scarlet Tanagers are also invading the area filling the air with their hoarse song and hanging out at the tree tops - some trees aren't fully leaved out yet so they're easy to see right now. And last but not least, I heard tons of Veerys calling and singing this morning. Wilson's Snipe seem to like logged off areas and they were calling from the slash piles. I could walk right up to them before they flushed. [mou-net] Spruce Grouse, displaying
I just spent over an hour with a very cooperative "displaying" Spruce Grouse. He spent all his time flying back and forth from one pre-determined branch to the ground. I think he may have fallen in love with the click of the shutter of my camera as he would puff up and click his tail in response. He took a little rest at one point and I watched as he ate Jack Pine needles. Eventually, I stood right on his lek and he flew directly at me. I thought he was going to land on my head, but he lit just to my right on the ground - I could have reached out and touched him. He then cocked his head to the side and stared up at me. We looked at each other for a few seconds then he walked away to once again fly up to his favored branch. Back and forth he would go, over and over again, landing right next to me and then walking away to fly up to his branch. At one point, a group of 6 Boreal Chickadees worked their way through the Jack Pine. It was fun to hear their spring song mixed in with their "chick-a-day, days". Other birds heard were Ruby-crowned Kinglet and Hermit Thrush. Location is between the Moose River and the Portage River on the Echo Trail (county road 116) in northern St Louis County. Just west of the Portage River there is an old logging road that has been dug up by the Forest Service. Walk through the rubble and take a right at the fork. [mou] Spruce Grouse and Brown Thrasher
Found a Spruce Grouse Thursday on the Norway Trail (FR471 runs south from the Echo Trail) in northern St Louis County. It flew up in front of my car showing the chestnut colored tips of its tail. I was able to follow it into the woods and get quite close ? looked like it may have been a young one ? not quite full-grown. About ? mile away a Brown Thrasher flew up from the road. I was able to get out of my car and look at the bird with binoculars to confirm the sighting. The big yellow eyes told me it wasn?t a Hermit Thrush! There were 2 Thrashers together ? possible nesting? I was surprised to see these birds out in the middle of the Superior National Forest. There are many young jack pines in this area. At the Astrid Lake trail (just off Echo Trail) there were singing Connecticut Warblers. Also, last week a flock of about 20 black-hooded Gulls flew over (some were immature without the black hood). My initial id was Franklins Gull, but I hesitate to say because I see Franklin?s Gulls are considered casual in the Superior National Forest in St Louis County. But the one field mark was a black band on the underside of the wing with very noticeable white wing tips. We?d just had a significant hatch of dragonflies. [mou] Pine Grosbeak in northern St Louis County
Today, Monday, March 31, 2008 there was a lone female Pine Grosbeak in the yard. Most of these birds had left by March 15th. Also saw one Pine Grosbeak last Friday along with a very probable Hoary Redpoll. (the Hoary Redpoll had only two streaks on his flanks - the rump and vent area were completely white - he had a wash of red on the breast - not as vivid as the Common Redpolls). They were mixed in with a flock of Common Redpolls. There are many Common Redpolls here now. Briefly on Saturday morning a Robin showed up. And on Sunday I saw two Gulls - these birds along with the crows are the only migrants that have shown up so far. It is still very much winter up here - lakes and rivers are locked in ice. Also, last Thursday I observed a Red Crossbill on the road. He was very interested in a crack in the asphalt. I watched him with my binoculars for a little while - by the way he was tilting his head it looked like he was sharpening his beak on the ragged edge of the tar. [mou] Cardinals at Crane Lake
Yesterday I observed a male Cardinal at Crane Lake in northern St Louis County. Crane Lake is 4 miles from the Canadian border. This morning a friend called to say she has a female Cardinal at her (empty) feeder at Buyck, MN. Buyck is about 15 miles south of Crane Lake. [mou] St Louis County Spruce Grouse
Saw a beautiful female Spruce Grouse over the weekend. The location was in northern St Louis County about 6 miles south of the Echo Trail (county road 116) on Forest Road 471. We saw the Spruce Grouse while on the road before taking the Norway Hiking Trail. See map at: http://www.fs.fed.us/r9/forests/superior/recreation/hiking/documents/norwayt railrog.pdf on the hiking trail we also saw 6 Pine Grosbeaks in the pines and a flock of about 20 Redpolls in the birch trees. Next weekend is opening firearms deer hunting season so I wouldn't recommend hiking unless you wear blaze orange. Dee Kuder Crane Lake, MN -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... [mou] Snow Buntings & Surf Scoters at Crane Lake
Saw several Snow Buntings along the road Thursday at Crane Lake in northern St Louis County. 2 Surf Scoters were seen on the lake and a Black-backed Woodpecker in the woods. The BB Woodpecker was a female and vocalized quite a bit - it was interesting to hear the difference in their call from the Hairy and Downey woodpeckers. Maybe the numerous small forest fires that occurred up here this summer has attracted larger numbers of BB Woodpeckers - have seen several since Labor Day weekend. This morning a Mourning Dove showed up in the backyard - not usually seen up here in the northwoods. -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... [mou] Evening Grosbeaks
Yesterday while walking the Herriman Lake Trail in Crane Lake in northern St Louis County, I came across a small flock of Evening Grosbeaks. They were way up in an Aspen tree. There was a strange call being emitted by one of the birds, I had never heard the call before, it was a low buzzy chirping. Then I observed one bird fluttering its wings like young birds will do when they are begging for food. An adult male then fed the begging bird. I wonder if they already have young birds just fledged or if this was a courtship ritual. Diane (Dee) Kuder Crane Lake, MN -- next part -- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I've also had a White-throated Sparrow overwinter. The warbler is an amazing little bird that survived 3 nights of 30+ below temperatures and a couple weeks of 20 below temps, those temps don't factor in the wind chill which was horrendous at the time. Crane Lake is in the very far north of St Louis County and is located only 4 miles from Canada. You may have to copy and paste the link into your address bar. http://youtube.com/watch?v=YNTpJAC15TU If that doesn't work, you can search for the video: Yellow-rumped Warbler & White-throated Sparrow. For a video that I took Feb 3rd, go to the "More from this User" tab just to the right of the video. Scroll down to Yellow-rumped Warbler. It is very interesting to note the plumage - his breeding plumage is starting to come in. I hope to get more pictures of him as he changes. I am curious to know if the bird is a male or female, any advice? The yellow on the very top of the head is just starting to appear - do both male and female have the yellow patch? [mou] Black-backed Woodpecker at Crane Lake
This is a multi-part message in MIME format. --=_NextPart_000_0032_01C6D4AD.CBC8C100 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Last night at about 6pm, I heard a loud chip call like a Hairy Wookpecker, but lower and louder. Ran for my bins and got a good look at a Black-backed Woodpecker. I believe I also saw one last week on Thursday, but didn't have my binoculars. I was alerted to the bird's presence by its different call. The fall migration here is fantastic this year. My yard is full of White-throated Sparrows, they've been here for a while now eating at the feeders and foraging on the ground. They have even learned to negotiate my caged squirrel proof feeder. Perhaps the severe drought this summer has helped their nesting efforts. Yesterday afternoon, my husband and I took a boat ride down Rollick Creek, this small creek flows into Crane Lake. We used the electric trolling motor so we were able to sneak right up to many birds. We scared up a flock of 20-30 Wood Ducks, Blue-wing Teals, and saw a couple of lone Pied-billed Grebes. The highlights of the trip were the numerous Warblers in the wild rice beds. I believe there were several flocks of Connecticut Warblers hanging onto the stalks of the wild rice and gleaning insects. We also saw lots of Common Yellowthroats. There were other warblers present, but I was unable to identify them in their fall plumage. (Thank you to Chet Meyers for his excellent article in the MN Volunteer this month on Fall Warblers) I was able to identify the Palm Warblers with their tail pumping and there were Yellow-rumped Warblers present as well. Last week the huge picture windows at Nelson's Resort were deadly. In one afternoon a Swainson's Thrush, a Hermit Thrush, a White-throated Sparrow, and a Yellow-rumped Warbler came to their demise. [mou] Varied Thrush
I have received a report of a Varied Thrush at Crane Lake, MN in far northern St Louis County. He has been sited for the past 6 days. In my experience a Varied Thrush will stick around for a while if there is a good food source. If anyone is interested in seeing this bird, let me know and I can send detailed directions. dku...@citlink.net Also read last week that there were a lot of Red-breasted Nuthatches around, this seems to be the case up here too, the woods are alive with the calls of RB Nuthatches. I had a group of about 20 Evening Grosbeaks come into my feeders. There have been a few flocks flying around in the area. Dee Kuder Crane Lake, MN
