[mou-net] Avian Flu - Geese??
I just walked around our local City Park, home to about a 150 resident geese, and found four dead, and one almost dead, none of apparent cause. Usually I only see an occasional dead one during hunting season, so assuming this is the Avian Flu. Anyone know if DNR or others are testing these dead birds? [mou-net] Starling pic needed
After reading the book, Mozart’s Starling, I am writing my next Nature Nut column on Starlings and am in need of a picture of a Starling in its iridescent breeding plumage without the cream color on the feather tips. My editors prefer hi-res and I will let you know if a pic you submit is used and credit appropriately if you give me the name to put on it. Thanks in advance to those who submit. Greetings, Looking to write this week on a common bird seen by few, Brown Creepers. Would appreciate hi-res pic of a Creeper, but as a challenge, a possible pic of a group of Creepers, and a real challenge, a Creeper nest, both much rarer than just a Creeper Any submissions used will be credited. [mou-net] Junco pics needed
Doing my weekly column on Juncos and wondering if anyone has fairly high resolution picture of an Oregon Junco. And, if anyone has a pic of one of the more colorful Junco species not found around here, that might be fun to include. Thanks ahead to those who might send Junco pics, and I will make sure to credit any used, and notify senders. And, thanks to all of you who have sent pics in the past. As much as I like to use my own photos for my columns, it is nice to have MOU and BugGuide folks help with pics when needed. Re: [mou-net] Swans at Brownsville
I don’t know if they are headed for Brownsville, but all day long I heard and saw dozens of groups of. Swans flying over my backwater cabin in the Weaver Bottoms between Weaver and Kellogg. I suspect I will hear them well into this evening before snow possibly begins. [mou-net] Armadillo Pic needed
Many of you have helped me over the past few years when I needed a bird pic for my weekly Nature Nut column. However, this time around I am hoping someone who has maybe done birding in Texas or Florida might have gotten a picture of an Armadillo I could use to go with the picture of a pile of armored plates from one found in a road ditch a few miles North of Rochester. Not able to survive here, it is assumed to be one that hitchhiked a ride somehow. I will appreciate any nice looking fairly high-resolution picture of an Armadillo anyone would let me use, and, if used I would credit appropriately. Thanks in advance for any that get sent, and if I get one I can use I will contact whoever provided it. [mou-net] Juvenile plumage Loon in Rochester
A presumably migrating group of three Common Loons were spotted on a small lake behind a dam on the Zumbro River in downtown Rochester yesterday. One of them appeared to be in full juvenile plumage. [mou-net] Snowy Owl Pics
Snowy greetings; With the movement of Snowy Owls again this year, maybe even more than what we had four years ago, I have decided to write them up again in my weekly Nature Nut column in the Rochester Post Bulletin, and am looking for a good picture to include. Anyone who can help by sending a fairly high resolution, close-up pic, would be appreciated. Keep in mind it will be going in a newspaper so contrast with background would also be helpful. Thanks in advance to any who are able to send something and I will be sure to notify anyone who’s picture I might submit and will direct the paper to credit appropriately. [mou-net] Kettling Turkey Vultures, and pic needed
On Sunday, March 19th I observed 60-70 kettling Turkey Vultures while biking in NW Rochester. Ten minutes later I got a call from a friend who said there were about 60 Turkey Vultures circling above his house and roosting in a cottonwood tree in his backyard a mile from where I spotted them. Unfortunately a neighbor scared them away afraid they would fly off with his dog. I thought it make make a good story for my Nature Nut column next week, and I got a good pic of the roosting birds, but could use one of a TV in flight showing its characteristic V-shaped wings. If anyone has one of fairly high resolution, please send and I will let you know if I submit it to my Editors. Thanks to those who send a pic in advance. [mou-net] Shrike Picture Needed
After a recent encounter with a Shrike at my bird feeder, I decided this might be a good bird for readers of my weekly Nature Nut column to learn about. Unfortunately, I did not get a good picture of the fleeting Shrike, so if anyone has one I might use, preferably a Northern in fairly high resolution, please send it to me. If I do submit your photo and my editors choose to to use it I will make sure to credit appropriately and let you know. Thanks in advance to all who might send one. [mou-net] Fwd: Rejected posting to MOU-NET@LISTS.UMN.EDU
Greetings, I am writing my column this week on nesting phoebes and a cowbird that dominated the nest with two phoebe young. I have a pretty good pic of the phoebe young dwarfed by the cowbird, but adult phoebe pics are not very good, so would appreciate an adult pic if anyone has one I can use. [mou-net] Killdeer pics and theory wanted
I am looking for a pic or two of a killdeer I might submit with my weekly Nature Nut column. I decided to write on them the morning following the last big snowstorm we had in March, about 10 inches. Before all roads had been cleared, I traveled from Rochester to the Weaver backwaters and was once again amazed at all the birds that gather on roads and roadsides following big snowstorms. Three years ago I made the same trip following an early May 14 inch storm and probably saw more than 100 Killdeer on the snow covered 42 mile drive. This years drive probably yielded at least fifty. Although there were many other species seen, Killdeer, and robins were the most surprising. Besides hoping to get a pic or two to use, possibly one standing and one flying, I am wondering what theories are out there about birds, even Killdeer, gathering on roads after snowstorms. I have my own ideas, but will appreciate thoughts any of you might have. Thanks in advance for any hi res picture submittals or shared theories. Any pic(s) used will be credited appropriately. Greg Munson PS Watched at least 6 or 7 Bald Eagles harassing a raft of five to ten thousand coot in the Weaver Bottoms today. Although I didn't see it myself, grainy photos from my camera showed two of the birds with coot in talons Nature Nut Rochester, MN (507) 285-9246 Join or Leave mou-net: http://lists.umn.edu/cgi-bin/wa?SUBED1=mou-net Archives: http://lists.umn.edu/archives/mou-net.html
[mou-net] Horned Lark pic needed
Greetings, I am writing my weekly Nature Nut column on Horned Larks this week as they are quite evident along area roads, but I suspect most of my readers have no idea what they are. Unfortunately, pics I have taken are not great so hoping someone might be will to let me use one and get credited for it. Assuming I might get multiple possibilities, if I use one of them I will let the photographer know. Thanks to all of you who might send me a pic. [mou-net] Ivory Gull pic
Now that the Ivory Gull is apparently gone, I thought I would share some info on all the excitement with readers here in SE. Unfortunately I was unable to get to see the gull myself, but followed the ten days of postings and hope someone might have a *high res* pic they would be willing to share. If I get one my editors like, I will make sure to have them credit accordingly in this week's Saturday edition of the Rochester Post Bulletin. Thanks ahead for those who might send a pic. [mou-net] Starling Pic needed
I am hoping to submit my Nature Nut column this week on starlings and unfortunately overcast skies have not allowed me to get a good shot of a starling in its brilliant winter plumage. If anyone has a fairly high resolution European starling winter plumage pic they would be willing to let me use I would make sure it would get credited appropriately in the Rochester Post Bulletin Saturday edition. [mou-net] Wood Duck pictures
With this past weekend being the opening of duck hunting here in Minnesota, based upon the hunters I spoke with, it seemed wood ducks, along with teal, were the main birds bagged. I thought I might write my Nature Nut column this week on Wood Ducks, focusing on some of their other interesting natural history besides being a game bird. I am looking for a high resolution picture or two of a male and/or male & female that I might use with my column and will credit any that I do use.
