Re: [mou-net] Limpkin (Wantonwan Co.)
The limpkin made an appearance shortly before 6am yesterday (6/4) after a forty minute wait. It was concealed somewhere in the willows in the western marsh out of view (44.008660, -94.396310) before getting up and landing in a tree not far from us where it preened for a couple minutes. It then flew to the eastern cattail marsh (44.008344, -94.392031) and landed out of sight. Very early morning (5-6am) seems to be the best time to try for this bird. My ebird checklist from yesterday: https://ebird.org/checklist/S140515052 A few ebird reports have noted a few calls from the bird, but nothing like the wailing of the Washington County bird. For the most part, it is staying silent. This is the potential third state record, as one was documented in Rochester last August and is currently in review. [mou-net] Tricolored Heron -- Blue Earth County
Brian Sandstrom found a tricolored heron at the Watonwan WPA in very western Blue Earth County last night. I have not personally seen it, but others confirmed that it continues this morning. Viewing is from Amber Road. The bird is foraging near the small dam area. (44.0168770, -94.3607472) Brian's checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S116643283 Best of luck! [mou-net] Jackson County - South Heron Lake
South Heron Lake is fairly low with several decent mudflats. John Hockema and I observed four buff-breasted sandpipers yesterday. One was on the mudflat at the entrance to Sandy Point County Park. If you park just across from the entrance, you can walk down on to the mudflat and scan from there. We had three others (buff-breasteds) on the gravel/rock spit visible from the boat landing in Sandy Point County Park. There is a nice mudflat there as well. The beach is excellent for walking out to the sandy point, there's also a nice trail that goes through the small woods out to the point as well. We had a decent variety of shorebirds; ebird checklist: https://ebird.org/checklist/S72768749 The entrance to Sandy Point County Park: 43.718105, -95.242777 >From the town of Okabena, head southeast on Cty Rd 20 towards Lakefield. In 2.5 miles, turn left (east) on 850th St. There SHOULD be signs for the park, but they've gone missing before... The entrance to the park is 1.5 miles from Cty Rd 20, you'll see the lake in front of you. Another option if you're feeling super adventurous and have a high-clearance vehicle, is to try the rocky spit to the north of Sandy Point County Park. Before you come to the entrance to the park, you'll notice a two track road heading north, this is State property. It's a little overgrown, but we made it back there with our subaru. The road is dry (much like everything else down here right now), but it does have a few potholes. Take this two track north until it turns right. Then take that all the way to the turn around where you can park. You'll have to hike about 0.1 mile in to view the rocky spit. We did have a couple semi-palmated plovers out there yesterday. I would anticipate ruddy turnstones in the future. Re: [mou-net] Spotted Towhee - Morrison County
Hello Birders! My parents have had a few inquiries about the spotted towhee coming to their feeders. The towhee is alive and well but is a lot more sporadic. That being said, my parents have hosted over 50 birders in their home and would like a break from all of the chaos. They appreciate everyone being kind and courteous and respecting all of their wishes, but they would love to return to their normal routine. Please refrain from looking for it as you probably won't find it. It has many hiding spots and they are not viewable from the road or driveway. Thank you to those that brought goodies for them and the towhee! Thank you for understanding. Wishing everyone a Happy New year! [mou-net] Varied Thrush - Benton County
While birding Benton County with my parents and brother this afternoon, I found a Varied Thrush. We observed it along 160th St NW where it crosses the Little Rock Creek. It was actively foraging with a flock of robins in the buckthorn on the north side of the road. Location where we observed the varied thrush from: 45.801069,-94.188837 I suspect that this may be a more challenging chase, as it is not coming to a feeder. I wish everyone luck if they choose to go for it! [mou-net] Mountain Lake - Windom Christmas Bird Count
Do you like to try different Christmas Bird Counts every year? How about giving the Mountain Lake - Windom CBC a try? We're looking for a few extra participants for our count, which will be held on Saturday, January 4th. Some likely open-country species could include snow buntings, snowy owls, lapland longspurs, and horned larks. Rough-legged hawks and northern shrikes are also very possible. If you're feeling super lucky there is even a (slight) chance of finding an elusive gray partridge. If you're absolutely dying to see a Eurasian collared-dove, I'm sure we can find you one or twenty. I'm also more than happy to hand over the overwhelming job of counting house sparrows at my feeders. Start working on your 2020 year list by participating in a Christmas Bird Count (preferably this one). You never know what you'll find on a CBC! Participants will gather on Saturday, January 4th at the Windom Wetland Management District office at 7:30 AM to divide up the count circle and fill up on coffee. 49663 County Road 17, Windom, MN 56101 Looking forward to a fun time. [mou-net] Varied Thrush - Carlton County
A varied thrush has been coming to a feeder in Cromwell for a couple of weeks. Homeowners are allowing visitors. Here are the directions given by Josh McMahon via Facebook: You are welcome to just show up. It is coming to his parents house at 1531 West Island Lake Road in Cromwell. It seems to be around most consistently in the middle of the day. You can go around either side of the house as it mostly hangs out in a maple tree or the berry tree next to the feeder on the lake side. Also, they have an English setter that might be out, but he is friendly. The varied thrush was seen today. More info from Heidi: With the following caveats, we welcome people who want to see the bird. It has not been spotted today. It was first spotted late Sunday afternoon, and again off and on all day Monday. The bird has been spotted at 27499 190th St NW (East of Warren MN - 3 miles south of Hwy 1 on 280th St NW, east on 190th St.) Please, do NOT park at the former Wetlands Pines & Prairie site - 27351 190th St. NW Park at the Northwest Minnesota Pollinator Garden at 27569 190 St. NW. Please, do NOT drive down or block the driveway at 27499 190th St NW Do NOT take the short cut by the yellow "Danger" sign near the Pollinator Garden parking area. Walk back to 190th St NW then go east to the driveway at 27499. Walk south on the driveway until you see a line of cracked corn in the driveway. Please do NOT come any closer to the house, you will scare all the birds away. Thank you! [mou-net] Sabine's Gull -- Murray/Cottonwood Counties
Late this evening, I located a juvenile Sabine's Gull in Murray County on Hwy 62, 2.5 miles west of the Cottonwood County line. It slowly made its way east, passing over flooded ag fields and wetlands. John Hockema and I followed the bird for a mile and eventually lost it. At that point we were only a mile or so from Talcot Lake in Cottonwood County. We scoped the lake from the boat landing on the south side where John was able to relocate the Sabine's gull over the water. It eventually landed. It is more than likely roosting there for the night, along with a couple hundred other gulls (mostly Franklin's).
