Went out birding by Dassel & Litchfield yesterday and was able to see and

Bufflehead, Redhead, Canvasback, Ruddy Duck, Wood Duck, Northern Shoveler,
Cackling Goose, Hooded Merganser, Brewers Blackbird and lots of Trumpeter Swans
and American Coot.
The areas I went to are, Lake Ripley in Litchfield, very good for ducks,
also South of Litchfield on Hwy 22 to 230th street to Round Lake on the east
side of the Hwy, also, Hwy 15 south of Dassel, south of 180th St there is a
water hole on the west side of the road in the field, Butternut Lake south of
Dassel, 220th St and 723rd Ave, on 220th is where the Horned Lark was seen,
also, the Dassel WWTP is a spot to check now and then, just north on Dassel on
Hwy 15.
Another spot, south of Dassel on Hwy 15 to 200th St,195th St to 196th St. That
road has pot holes and lakes, Porter and Mud Lakes are the ones I know.
These areas are very good waterfowl birding.

Hello

Gray Owls have be

Hello

Ever since Boreal Owls and Great
Gray Owls have been moving around the north shore of Lake Superior I been
getting a lot of requests from birders from all over Minnesota and elsewhere
about helping them locate these owls.  Many times they leave me their cell
phone numbers to me so when I do
locate a Boreal Owl or a Great Gray Owl they ask that I call them and give them
directions to the exact location of the owl.  All winter season I have been
sharing owl locations to these people and
also to everyone on the MOU listserv.  NEVER once would I ever think to say
“you could always go out and find
one on your own, that’s what other people do”.  Also this “that’s what other
people do” is a bunch of BS.  Birders share exact locations on many birds
such as this weekend we were sharing exact bird locations to a lot of birders
who wanted to see a King Eider, Saw Whet Owl, Boreal Owl, Great Gray Owl and
Snowy Owls. Never once did any of the local birders or guides say to anyone to
go find your own owls because that is what everyone else does.

Also it is very sad to see that
the very same Long-eared Owl that Brian Byrne was asking about to see was
photographed
and posted on Facebook.  I know a lot of
the serious bird photographers in the Twin Cities area and they highly protect
their Long-eared Owl locations and they also highly protect their Eastern
Screech
Owl locations as well.  It is maddening
that all of us local guides and local birders have put these very same people
on owls they probably could not find on their own without our help but yet they
cannot share to the MOU community their “secret” owl locations for others to
enjoy.  Yes, we risked putting these roosting
Boreal Owls endangered from all the attention from all the birders and
photographers who came in large numbers to view these owls but, those risks
were ours to risk to deal with and so far there were only a few minor issues
with a few.  Also Boreal Owls are a
threaten species in Minnesota unlike the Long-eared Owls but yet there are a
few photographers out there who only want to share these owl locations among
themselves.  Good Lord maybe that should
have been our goal was to keep these Boreal Owl sightings hidden and make
people find their own owls but that type of selfishness doesn’t occur up here
in the Duluth birding community and we have been proudly catering to many
visiting
birders for years on where to find owls and other birds that maybe of interest
to them.  Too bad birders like Scott
Meyer who I have helped in the past and gave exact bird locations with, cannot
do the same to those who are not in the loop to know where certain birds can be
found.

I am sure anytime one of the MOU
listserv moderators will be coming on soon to end this thread but I think this
topic should be talked about to some length because I think there are a lot of
birders who feel out of the loop from others in the birding community who would
like to be included on where to find owls and other types of bird species that
maybe of interest to them. I am just a member of the MOU organization and I
believe the MOU listserv is a tool for MOU members and non-members to learn
about exact bird locations in Minnesota.  That is why there are three MOU RBAs
that come out each week telling
people where they can go to see certain bird species.  I also believe that is
why people post bird
sightings on the MOU listserv so others can find the bird too.  Yes, even if
the bird was submitted to ebird
and that bird was sighted in Minnesota and if you know the location where the
bird can be found then share the sighting.  If you want me to share birds with
you, then I expect you to share bird
sightings with others including owl sightings.

it. Curious as to see how long it will hang around.

[mou-net] Tower day in Dassel

2011-02-05 Thread Paul - Koni Fank
We did our Tower day yesterday,  2-4-11 in Dassel

We did our Tower day yesterday,  2-4-11 in Dassel, but due to certain
circumstances we were unable to be out there all day, we missed 4 hours.  We
only had 19 species, which wasn't too bad.
We did not see or hear the Eagle, House Finch, Purple Finch, Flicker, Tree
Sparrow or the Sharp-shinned that have been around the yard.

The weather was better than they had predicted, which we were happy about.
We seen 2 Red-tailed Hawks and one was carring a branch, we figured it was
re-inforcing its nest, they were going in that direction.
    These are the species we seen;
Barred Owl
Northern Cardinal
Dark-eyed Junco
Harris's Sparrow
Black-capped Chickade

Red-tailed Hawk
Red-bellied Woodpecker

[mou-net] Fw: [mnbird] DEER PROBLEMS, ROLLINGSTONE, MN, WINONA CO.

2011-01-26 Thread Paul - Koni Fank
Hi, we have had the same problem with the deer. We have a recipe that I mix up
for Deer and Rabbits and it REALLY works, and is very inexpensive.

    Here is the recipe:
   DEER AND RABBIT REPELLENT
  1 cup milk
  1 egg
  1 tsp.  Dish soap
  1 TBLS. cooking oil
Mix in blender. Pour in Gallon jug (milk jug is good). Fill remainder
of jug with water and shake good. Let set about a day. Pour into hand sprayer
or
spray bottle.

  DO NOT REFRIGERATE
This has to ferment and it will smell like rotten eggs when you pour it
into
the sprayer, so don't spill it, but it does work.
My husband likes the hand sprayer, he doesn't have to fill it like you
would
a spray bottle. We usually put it on trees and plants during the summer months,
but like you said, the deer are hungry so my husband sprays it on during the
winter also, we have done this the last two winters.

Subject: [mnbird] DEER PROBLEMS, ROLLINGSTONE, MN, WINONA CO.

I live in Rollingstone, Winona Co.,  in  the southeast corner of MN.

The snowfall around here has evidently made it difficult for the deer to find
food.

Deer have come into town to my backyard and have practically stripped the
branches bare from a young cedar tree I had planted.  They have repeatedly
taken
food from my bird feeders.

Last night was the clincher.  Get out the bows and arrows!  I'm fighting mad.
The deer once again attacked my bird feeders and have destroyed the second
finch
feeder I've put out this winter (the sock type).

Guess I'll need to stop feeding the birds but it breaks my heart to look out
the
window to see the finches, juncos, and sometimes pine siskins sitting on the
post looking at the house as if to say, Aren't your going to feed me?

Sad and mad in Rollingstone.

CMClark

year. (55 in 2008, 55 in 2007, 53 in 2006, 49 in 2005) We had 16 different
species last year that we didn't see this year and 12 species this year that we
didn't see last year.

Our Tower Day is where we are in the Tower that we built to watch birds
in.
We do a Tower Day once a month, each month, all year long. We are out there
from
dawn to dusk for the entire day, no matter what the conditions are, hot or
cold.
We also keep record of the weather conditions to see what the difference is in
birds that we see. It is interesting to see what birds are seen or not being
seen from year to year.

We did our Tower Day on the 1st and we seen 56 species, compared to 60 last
year. (55 in 2008, 55 in 2007, 53 in 2006, 49 in 2005) We had 16 different

didn't see last year.

in.

We do a Tower Day once a month, each month, all year long. We are out there
from

dawn to dusk for the entire day, no matter what the conditions are, hot or
cold.

We also keep record of the weather conditions to see what the difference is in

[mou-net] Red-breasted Nuthatch arrival-Dassel

2010-09-08 Thread Paul - Koni Fank
We have at least 2 Red-breasted Nuthatch's that have arrived in our yard
today at Dassel in Meeker Cty. It's nice to see them back here. We still have
the RC Kinglets and RE Vireo's here. The Hummingbirds are having a feast at our
feeders yet and keep trying to protect each one.

[mou-net] Tower Day location

2010-04-06 Thread Paul - Koni Fank
  Hi all,
We live about 3 miles south of Dassel,Mn.,south of Pigeon Lake. Which is south
of St.Cloud and north of Hutchinson.
We built a tower 15 feet high about 6 years ago in our yard in Dassel to watch
birds in, mainly for the Big Sit that takes place in October, and then we
decided to do it every month. We do this EVERY month all year long, even when
it is COLD. So every month we have a tower day from dawn to dark, watching to
see what birds are in our area or passing through, putting in some 16 hour days
or longer. We really enjoy it, and this is strickly a Birding Day. We have
members from our Hutchinson Bird Clud our here for the Big Sit, or anytime they
wish to come out and enjoy the birding. We keep records of the weather
conditions and the species. We have done this since August of 2005.
