[mou-net] Pine siskin mortality
A friend of mine lives near Hinckley and has found several pine siskins dead in her yard. There is no visible sign of injury and she is wondering if there might be some reason - like maybe weather-related - to cause this. Thanks for any thoughts. [mou-net] A great new book for those interested in birding in South Dakota
David Swanson, a long-time ornithologist at the University of South Dakota, has just published a new book - "Birder's Guide to South Dakota". Here is a description: A guide to birding locations and birds in South Dakota. The book covers the variety of habitats in the state, ranging from pine and spruce forests of the Black Hills and open mixed-grass prairies in the west to large reservoirs on the Missouri River to eastern deciduous forest outposts and remnant tallgrass prairies in far eastern regions. Over 420 species of birds have been documented in South Dakota. This book aims to introduce birders to the rich habitats that South Dakota has to offer and their associated birds. Over 100 of the best birding sites in the state are mapped and described in the book, along with specifics on the habitats and birds that occur at each of these sites. It is well worth having this guide to our neighboring state in your collection. It is available from the South Dakota Ornithologists' Union website, sdou.org. Re: [mou-net] Robins
There are a lot of hackberries and crabapples in my neighborhood, so the robins have been hanging around all winter. I have a heated birdbath, and the last couple of weeks it has just been flooded with robins - one time I counted 19 in and near the birdbath, and more in nearby trees. The only downside is that they poop in the birdbath a lot so it requires daily cleaning - hard in the cold weather! [mou-net] Question about fledgling barn swallows
A friend in South Dakota has barn swallows nesting under her eaves, and for two years in a row the birds have returned to the nest after fledging. This year, the birds fledged Tuesday morning and returned to the nest that night, left again yesterday morning and then returned to the nest ahead of the impending storms. This seems very unusual. Has anyone run into this behavior with barn swallows or any other species? I have done some cursory searching online and find nothing about this, and it seems very interesting. Thanks. Re: [mou-net] Good news about Roberts Bird Sanctuary
Kit, you have done magnificent work on this. Congratulations. On Tue, Apr 26, 2011 at 11:55 AM, Kit Healy heal0...@umn.edu wrote: Good news about Roberts Bird Sanctuary: At its April 25 meeting, the CAC voted to remove the two sites next to the Sanctuary from consideration as a potential off-leash dog park site. Thank you to everyone who spoke out on behalf of the Sanctuary: CAC members said they hear the opposition to the sites loud clear. Of course, the CAC only makes recommendations; it is the MPRB Commissioners who have the final say on where the new dog park is located. It is doubtful the commissioners will vote to put a dog park at either site, however, because they too are well aware of the opposition. [mou-net] March 8th meeting with Richard Crossley at Audubon Chapter of Minneapolis meeting, 7:00 p.m.
Audubon Society of Minneapolis, Tuesday, March 8th meeting, 7:00 p.m. at Brookdale Library Please note: this meeting date and place is a change from the regular monthly meeting Come and hear Richard Crossley discuss his new book, The Crossley ID Guide: Eastern Birds, which has recently been released. This stunningly illustrated book from acclaimed birder and photographer Richard Crossley revolutionizes birding by providing the first real-life approach to identification. Whether you are a beginning birder or an expert birder or somewhere in-between, the Crossley ID Guide will vastly improve your ability to identify birds. Unlike other guides that provide isolated individual photographs or illustrations of birds, the Crossley Guide features large, life-like scenes for each species. These beautiful compositions show how a bird’s appearance changes with distance and gives equal emphasis to the characteristics experts use to identify birds: size, structure and shape, behavior, probability, and color. Essential for all birders, the guide will make new birders of many people who have despaired of using traditional guides. Directions: Take Hwy 94W to Shingle Creek Parkway South, exit 34, which takes you across the highway. The library and service center will be on your right, across the street from Target. There is ample parking. The library address is 6125 Shingle Creek Parkway South. The author will autograph books, and there will be a limited number of copies for sale.
