[mou-net] Chat, Washington County

2018-05-17 Thread Rick Gibson
I stopped by Afton State Park this morning (6:30) to look for the Chat
which has been recently mentioned on ebird but not yet on MOU.

He was present, singing loudly and flopping about. Same area as last year:
enter from the north, take the first main path to the right/west, follow
the curve around, past the bench and into the next open space. He was in
the flowering tree near the trail when I arrived.

Also present were Tennessee and Blue-winged Warblers and what seemed like
two dozen Henslow's Sparrows - only one of which was brazen enough to sit
atop a short, scraggly tree and sing.

Have fun!

[mou-net] Chat

2017-05-31 Thread mou
(Posted by Frank Gosiak via moumn.org)

The Chat was there at 11:00 and so was a Catbird, Brown Thrasher, Rose Breasted
Grosbeak, Oriole, and an Eastern Towhee. Along with the terrain and all these
similar
sounds like a Chat, or may I say the sounds the Chat could mimic, it proved
challenging at
times. Hang in there and find the bird because if you go by sound you may not
have found
it. How can this be classified a warbler when appearance and sound contradict
all I know
about warblers? Also, Ron Taube gave me a good lesson about butterflies and it
shows why
birding and all it entails is so much fun. Frank Gosiak

Re: [mou-net] Chat

2017-05-31 Thread Rick Gibson
The Chat was present this morning (7am) at the previously described Afton
State Park spot - singing loudly and showing himself clearly.

Also saw a Black-billed Cuckoo in the trees near the 50th St entrance and
never heard so many Henslow's Sparrows in this field before.

Have fun!

[mou-net] Chat / 6-17-16

2016-06-18 Thread mou
(Posted by Michael Oetken via moumn.org)

After finally cleaning up after the near hurricane last in New Ulm (4.3 inches
in 2 hours) , I finally had a chance to review the RBA. Yesterday (Friday)
about 4:00 PM I heard (did not see) the Chat calling noisily for about 30
seconds near the area Shawn Conrad reported this morning and as reported
by Chad Heins on Friday. I proceeded up the road north and came back
around but could not relocate. Birdy area with many Dicksissels, Sedge
Wrens, and a Black-billed Cuckoo.

[mou-net] Chat - Jackson County

2014-05-18 Thread Brad Bolduan
Yellow- Breasted Chat present today on 500th Ave south of Co 30 in Jackson
County.
At least 3 Bay-breasted present at same location.

Different location; but 6 Parulas in one tree at 7 mile Creek County Park in
Nicollet County today. Golden-winged also in that park.

Best warbler migration I have seen in many years (or perhaps best I have
ever experienced).

[mou-net] Chat not found

2011-05-29 Thread linda whyte
Reports of a Yellow-breasted Chat at Hyland Park Reserve in
Bloomington drew me there for the daily exercise walk. Starting right
across the street from the beach parking lot and just by the pond, I
made a loop south-east-north-west, starting and ending where I think
the Chat was reported. Purposely included in the loop was the site
where a Chat spent the summer a few years ago. The moist field, with
lots of small trees and shrubs, seems well suited to Chats.
On the first pass there were flashes of brown, black, yellow and white
but they all belonged to the Common Yellow-throat Warbler On the
return pass there were intriguing Chat-like sounds that seemed to
match what was on my recordings ( I listen through earphones and try
to compare/contrast with what I hear in the field.) An extended
search to see the singer yielded only a couple of fly-by views of what
I'm reasonably sure was a very melodious Gray Catbird.
On another note I did find Dickcissels at Randolph Industrial Park
this afternoon. They were north of the lot with the church, songing
on both sides of the road.

Linda

[mou-net] Chat and Redheads at Hyland Park Reserve

2011-05-28 Thread Bob Bystrom
A yellow breasted chat was singing loudly (I guess they never sing softly) at
Hyland Lake Park Reserve in Bloomington about 5:30 this morning. Also unusual
at the park were two male redhead ducks. The ducks and chat were located in the
same general area.

If you go, park at Bush Lake Beach. The ducks were in the pond east of E. Bush
Lake Road directly across from the entrance to the beach parking area.

A paved trail runs east and south of the pond. Take the trail south to find
the chat. It was east of the trail about 50 paces south of the trail stop sign
(where the spur from Bush Lake Beach enters the Hyland Park trail system).
This is a wooded area--not typical chat habitat.

[mou-net] Chat still at Hyland Park in Bloomington, Hennepin County

2009-05-29 Thread Williams, Bob
My wife and I went to Hyland Park early this morning and heard the chat
calling in the general area previously reported. We heard it pretty
regularly over a long period of time as it moved around from place to
place. It spent most of its time well east and/or well north of the
intersection referred to by Linda Whyte. I include a copy of her
posting for reference. We finally got a good look at the bird singing
from the top of a mid-sized tree northeast of the intersection.
Bob Williams, Bloomington

The yellow-breasted chat was re-found at Hyland Park Reserve at 5:15
this afternoon, at a trail intersection north of the visitors (not
nature) center. Though initially approached from the southwest, this
site is more easily accessed from the driveway that leads to the
overflow (Edgewood?) parking lot. Following this driveway will take you
past a lot and a small, brown, electrical outbuilding. The path will
lead up a hill to a dog trail. At the fork, turn left, and you'll pass a
small pond in the woods on your right. The path leads directly to the
intersection in question. The chat was quiet, but eventually showed up.
It flew from one small tree to another, dropping in the low, dense
shrubs at intervals. It spent most of its time patrolling around this
intersection. Linda Whyte
