[mou-net] Connecticut Warbler, Red-headed Woodpecker, Yellow-bellied Flycatcher

2024-05-20 Thread DAVE ZUMETA
On the southern end of the restored oak savanna to the east of the East 36th
Street parking lot along West River Road in Mississippi Gorge Regional Park, I
both heard and saw a Connecticut Warbler at 10 AM this morning (Monday, May
20). The bird sang only one complete song while hidden in dense shrubbery, then
flew up to a nearby oak tree, where its grey hood and distinct, complete white
eye ring were clearly visible. The rest of the bird was hidden by leaves. On
the morning of Sunday, May 19, I observed an adult Red-headed Woodpecker in
this same area. Also on May 19, in a wooded area about 200 feet south of the
Red-headed Woodpecker observation, I both heard and saw a Yellow-bellied
Flycatcher, identified by its yellow breast and belly as well as by its
distinctive call.

Re: [mou-net] Connecticut Warbler, Rusty Blackbird at TS Roberts bird sanctuary (Mpls.)

2020-05-04 Thread Stephen Greenfield
A Connecticut Warbler on 5/4 would be VERY early at Roberts, since we
generally don't have them until the last week of May, but not impossible.
Good find, Kyle. If others go looking for it, make sure you practice social
distancing and stay on the trails; we don't want to give the Park Board
reason to close down the sanctuary. (I'm assuming people can tell COWAs from
Nashville Warblers, which are getting common now, with a similar plumage but
different habits.)

My best bird today was a Connecticut Warbler at TS Roberts on the east side
of Lake Harriet. It was in a boggy section about 2/3 of the way in, with
several fallen/uprooted trees.

A close second was a lone Rusty Blackbird (at least I only found one--there
are lots of Grackles around though, so it may have been easy to overlook
additonal "Rusties" as I was more focused on searching for warblers). This
one just happened to pop up right in front of me near the entrance to the
sanctuary trails, couldn't miss it!

[mou-net] Connecticut Warbler Washington County William O'Brien SP

2019-05-27 Thread Jonathan Beck
We found two Connecticut Warblers behind our campsite in the Riverview
campsite at William O'Brien SP on Saturday, May 25. They were in a flooded
area of deciduous trees, hopping along the ground. We had very good looks
at a normally hard to spot bird, and a lifer for our checklist.

Lots of other warblers seen, including Blackburnian, Wilson's, American
Redstart, Magnolia, Bay Breasted, Black and White, Yellow, and Prothonotary
(on Greenberg Island, required a canoe to get to, just like Bob Janssen
promises!)

This morning I found 21 species of warbler at Battle Creek Park East in
southeast Ramsey County. All species were heard singing and most were seen
as well, highlighted by a Connecticut Warbler. To find this bird, follow
the main paved trail south from the dog park area off Upper Afton Rd. and
continue south until the path is flooded; the bird was singing emphatically
on the dirt trail that heads east from this spot.

[mou-net] Connecticut Warbler - Sax Zim Bog

2014-06-01 Thread Tanya Beyer
Easing along Admiral Road in the Prius with the windows down I was able to
locate a singing bird by ear where it has been found in prior years, and by
following the song back into the tamarack bog at length found it 20-30 feet
up in a tamarack. I count it today as a life bird. Mosquito repellant I had
put on was wearing thin and conditions were as humid as anywhere in the
state, I think, but since I suspected the bird was nesting in this section
near where the bird feeders hang in the winter I was willing to stand,
hoping the warbler could be pished lower. As it was the bird and I provided
an hour or more's diversion for each other, and though it never dropped to
the level you'd expect of a ground-nesting bird, it sang its three-part
song steadfastly and at a far-carrying volume as if I might be a rival of
some kind. I often hope to be giving as much entertainment as I am getting
when I exchange stares with a bird, each of us shifting heads, shoulders
and binoculars in hopes of an ever-clearer view. Possibly the warbler was
impressed at all the mosquitoes I was attracting.

There were two long episodes of posing and singing. While I waited,
crushing tens of mosquitoes that came in to feast on me, a great grey owl
floated over at the level of the treetops and landed within easy sight on a
snag. I watched the southerly breeze lift and part the enormous feathers on
his back, holding them upward in a way that suggests the owl had relaxed
them in a manner meant to cool his back, while his wings drooped before he
moved on.

Other finds included three varieties of purple and white violet and a
yellow lady's slipper, not quite open.

Just returned from our warm winter's morning where Claudia Egelhoff relocated

Several other warblers still hanging around. We found it notable that the
zillions of flycatchers we saw were hawking very close to and on the ground.

[mou-net] Connecticut warbler at Richardson Nature Center (Bloomington) today

2013-05-25 Thread Michael Hurben
I was surprised and pleased this morning around 7AM to find a singing male
Connecticut just east of the nature center building. The bird was on either
side, and occasionally on, the trail that runs N-S between the building and the
pond. Happily the bird stayed in the area long enough for me to get my wife
over at 7:30 and still see it, and even cooperated for several other birders
who came by later, including Scott Meyer. The last we saw or heard the bird was
probably around 11AM, I am guessing. Despite occasional joggers on the trail
through the AM, he continued to be in the area, and sang frequently. We plan to
return this evening, as this spot was on fire for warblers all AM. The small
hill just to the south with all of the oaks was particularly productive, with
many chestnut-sideds, blackburnians, black-throated greens, bay-breasted,
canadas, and much more. I've never seen this locale so chock full of warblers
in the many years I've been birding here.

Three empid species were also singing in this spot (Least, Yellow-bellied, and
Alder), and further south in the grassy open areas north of Hyland Lake I found
a singing Willow. C'mon Acadian!!

Good birding,
-Michael

At about 8:30AM Saturday I heard a Connecticut Warbler sing repeatedly the the
Kruger Recreation Area. At the back of the main entrance there is a paved
trail which periodically splits off from itself and reconnects. When in doubt,
veer left and follow paved trail to it's absolute end. There is a picnic table
here, and unpaved trail begins. Follow this up the hill until the hill crests
(200 yds.?). There will be a small (12ft.) broken snag with a piece of orange
flagging tape double wrapped around the trunk on the right side of the trail.
The bird was singing 10 yds. downslope from here.
Veery, Wood Thrush, BT Green Warbler, and Magnolia Warbler were especially
common in here today.
I travelled back to Winona County through Weaver Dunes/McCarthy Lake and heard
Bell's Vireo back on territory.

I had at least 3 Connecticuts singing off of CR 431 in Itasca County this
morning. I hiked into the bog and had visuals on 2 of the birds. The
easiest way to get there is to take 433 west from the intersection of 2 & 65
SE of Warba. Go 2 3/4 miles to the T at CR 72. Turn south and go for 2 1/4
miles and you'll be on 431 and at the bog. The Connecticuts were toward the
north end of the bog adjacent to the aspen higher ground. Palm Warblers,
both kinglets, and Yellow-bellied Flycatchers were also present--and I had
several Lincoln's Sparrows out there a couple of weeks ago.

Some people have told me that Common Yellowthroats can sing a
Connecticut-like song, but I've never had any problems with them.

Just returned from a week's vacation, taking day trips to different areas &

hiking in parks often was - so did enjoy a territorial Connecticut Warbler

Connecticuts are not listed as breeders in the park, but were noted in the
Aitkin guide as being present on that half mile circle (rather boggy area).

Had 98 species during the week, including 15 warblers. Black-throated
Greens, Blackburnians & Canadas often stole the show. My wife also had over
40 species of wildflowers for the week, in her first field ID foray.

An additional highlight was Nathan's gift of "Minnesota Birds, Where, When
