[mou-net] Hooded Warbler by West River Road

2019-06-12 Thread KATE BRADY
Between 10:20 and 11:20 a.m. today, I heard a Hooded Warbler singing
intermittently (for 1-2 minutes every 5-10 minutes) between the upper and lower
walking paths immediately east of West River Road just east of Dowling School
by the Mississippi River in South Minneapolis. I also got an excellent brief
look at the bird (an adult male) one foot off the ground, but the bird was
otherwise very secretive. Lee Pfannmuller also heard the bird singing, but we
were unable to see it while we were together after 10:40 a.m., and it stopped
singing between 11:20 and 11:50 a.m., when we left the area. To access the
lower walking path, the best place from which to observe the bird, park on the
west side of Edmund Blvd. near the corner of 38th Street East and Edmund Blvd.,
then walk east for about 100 feet across West River Road to steps leading down
to the lower walking path, turn right (south) on the path, and look for the
bird on both sides of the path about 200-300 feet south of the ste
ps. Earlier this morning I also heard a Least Flycatcher calling several times
on the southern edge of the 36th Street ravine about 150-200 feet northeast of
the 36th Street parking area. Least Flycatchers do not normally occur in this
area in June, so this bird is likely a very late migrant.

Had a nice warbler wave in Lebanon Hills regional park (Eagan). West of

seen with some regularity on the east portion of the park, but the last
time I saw one here was about 8 or 9 years ago. For what it's worth, this
one seemed to be moving on, but if interested it was in a brushy area
downhill from where the hiking trail splits from the horse trail, and near
where they cross paths again; brushy patch on the right, grassy field on
the left. Blue wingeds are here too, on territory.

On Friday, Erika and I heard and eventually saw the Hooded Warbler that
hangs out behind the visitor’s center at Afton State Park. I looked for it
near the ground, which was a mistake—the bird sang from the mid-level of

being back-lit, I was able to take a photograph (although far from the
greatest ever taken of the species). See my blog:

[mou-net] HOODED WARBLER, Afton State Park

A friend and I located a singing male HOODED WARBLER today at Afton State Park.
A few days ago, on the 7th, I got great views of a male PROTHONOTARY WARBLER
there as well.  Both of these species were present during nesting season last
year, though the Hooded Warbler was in a different location today: past the
bridge on the way to the lower picnic area and down the trail to the left.

Other birds of note were a BARRED OWL, BLUE-HEADED VIREO, YELLOW-THROATED
VIREO, and nine other warbler species--including a lone BLUE-WINGED WARBLER.
Two friends met us there and were also able to observe the Hooded Warbler.  We
did not hear or see the Prothonotary Warbler today.

Found a female hooded warbler on nest. First saw her Thursday am, but
didn't have enough time to look for nest. Today I did. Went to where I saw
her Thursday, and marked trail when I first heard her chip. Then continued
till she stopped and marked trail. Then went in between marks and sat on
folding chair I brought. Later bird was flushed by two joggers with dogs.
Went into chip mode for a while and then stopped. Next time was flushed by
a fox, which had got another bird in a panic. This time I saw where she came
from, right in front of me. Waited till she went onto nest and took her
picture. Is very close to path, and fox den with at least one pup.
Saw the male only once, but he came around about every half hour and
sang loudly, especially when I was watching fox listening.
Thanks to Pete Nichols for posting about the warblers, would like to show you
the nest.

[mou-net] Hooded Warbler, Carpenter Nature Center, Hastings

2012-08-31 Thread linda whyte
Following animal care at the nature center, Laura Coble and I went in
search of some of the birds found there a bit earlier in the morning by
others. Of particular interest was the Cuckoo seen by them in one of the
pine plantations on the north side of the property. However, we elected to
check first in the plantation area directly behind the meeting-lodge. We
found immediately the Redstarts and the Empid they had reported, then
spotted another warbler, a Magnolia, based on what Laura was able to see.

>From there we proceeded behind the north-most pines, down into the dry
ravine crossed by a wooden footbridge. There we came across one apparent
Thrush that gave us views too poor for specific ID. We back-tracked with a
mind to searching the pines area to the south for the Cuckoo, but were soon
arrested by the sound of foraging Chickadees. As hoped, we found warblers
among them, 3 very active Black-and-Whites.

Something else very blue, not a Jay or Bluebird, showed itself for a
frustrating flash. The search for that turned up the Hooded Warbler, a rear
view first, followed by a good look at the full hood.
At that point I was called away to bring a needy Bluebird to the Wildlife
Rehab Center; we found a young male Rose-breasted Grosbeak on the way back
to the car, but the Cuckoo search was suspended.

Hooded warbler at 9 Mile Creek.

I went in at the 106th St entrance off of 35W. Go west off of the 106th
street exit and the park entrance is on the left past the school.  There is
a steep set of steps down into the park. Cross the bridge immediately and
head south towards the river.  First heard singing by the large cottonwood
stump and watershed building.  Found the bird later a little south of the
1.6 mile market where the path comes to a T. The bird was straight ahead in
the woods in the back where the buckthorn is thick.

First heard the bird last Tuesday, saw the bird last Saturday and heard
again today.   There is a map of the park at this trailhead.

[mou-net] Hooded Warbler, Lebanon Hills update

2012-05-29 Thread Jason Caddy
I met up with Curt Rawn this morning by chance and with my daughter we set out
to find the Hooded Warbler in Lebanon Hills Regional Park. I had tried
yesterday on the trail that leads to Portage Lake from Shulze Lake without
success and we did not find it there again today but then we heard an
unfamiliar call at trail marker #45. It turned out to be a beautiful male
Hooded Warbler that gave us great views for several minutes. It was singing
loudly and continued to sing past 11:00am. We also found a Pileated Woodpecker
and I heard Eastern Towhee, and Red-eyed Vireo along with many flycatchers.
Please do not use playback for this warbler as it has a potential to breed with
the female that is in the area and it is of course quite rare in Minnesota. The
use of playback is banned in some areas of Southeast Arizona because it was
disrupting some of the range limited species when they were on their breeding
territories. Good Birding, Jason Caddy Minneapolis j.ca...@hotmail.com

[mou-net] Hooded Warbler pair, Lebanon Hills Regional Park

2012-05-28 Thread Matt Dufort

Hi all,

This morning I took a short walk at Lebanon Hills Regional Park in
Dakota County, starting at the Visitor's Center on Cliff Rd, and
circling Schulze Lake. I heard the singing male Hooded Warbler reported
previously, along the trail that leads south from Schulze Lake towards
Portage Lake. In this same area, constant chipping led me to an
actively foraging adult female Hooded Warbler. I didn't get to see the
two birds interacting, or see any signs of nesting. But for folks
visiting this area, please keep an eye out for any evidence of nesting
activity.

Also in the area - lots of Eastern Towhees, a singing Scarlet Tanager,
and many other more common woodland birds.

Good birding,

[mou-net] Hooded Warbler, Afton SP, belated post

2012-05-23 Thread linda whyte
(I apologize for the tardiness of this post.)
In mid-morning on Monday, there was a Hooded Warbler in Afton State Park,
at the top of the bluff, along the paved trail through the picnic area. It
was almost directly across from the first bathroom. It gave its signature
call twice, which is how it was, perched briefly on a bare limb in the
open. It seemed to move down the bluff in a northeasterly direction, and
was not re-found on the return walk.

[mou-net] Hooded Warbler at Krueger Park Wabasha County

2012-05-18 Thread Scott Mehus
I was at Krueger Park from 7:45-9:05 am today and was able to relocate the
male Hooded Warbler that Andy Nyhus reported yesterday. His directions
were right to the "T". The bird would actively signing for about 20
minutes and then be quite for about 20 minutes. It was very hard to
observe the bird though in the heavy cover of this ravine. The bridge area
seems to be the back side of it's territory as he would work his way to the
North East while signing and then the song would become fairly faint. So
be patient and eventually he works his way towards the bridge along the
trail.
Krueger Park is a great park to bird, there are lots of trails to explore!

[mou-net] Hooded Warbler, Henslow's Sparrow, Murphy-Hanrehan

2011-05-28 Thread linda whyte
The Hooded Warbler at Murphy-Hanrehan was in fine voice this morning,
easy to hear and not too difficult to find. He was along the section
of trail that is accessed across from the Horse Camp parking lot. Hike
in until you find the green park signs on either side of the path,
that prohibit entry due to Oak Wilt. From there walk 350 steps
farther, listening as you go. The bird was singing on the left side of
the trail. There are a couple of informal paths that lead in closer
to the bird, and that's where we saw it in plain sight

The Henslow's Sparrow was heard and seen in the huge open area to the
SE, just before you top the rise toward the picnic table on the hill.
Bobolinks were also prominent here.

Birding at Lake Rebecca PR this morning, I was very surprised to find a Hooded
warbler. The bird was not singing, but drew my attention with loud bright chip
notes. I watched it for about 10 min, then it disappeared into the understory.

Besides this nice surprise, I found very few migrants, and only 9 species of
warblers. Lots of resident birds setting up territories. Quite a few
yellow-billed cuckoo calling, too.

Directions to area- Enter the park main entrance and park at the boat launch
area. Follow the hiking trail south, along the edge of the lake. There are 2
trails branching off left, take the 2nd trail left(east). This goes straight

[mou-net] Hooded Warbler ~ Rice Co.

Hi everyone,
While attempting a big day in Rice County today, Gene Bauer, Dan Tallman and
I found a singing male Hooded Warbler in the east side of Cannon River
Wilderness Park. We all had great looks! This is the third year in a row that I
have seen or heard a Hooded Warbler in this very spot, which is about 100 yards
before the land opens up and you would encounter the boardwalk. This was also
one of 19 warbler species today. We tallied a total of 129 birds - far short of
the record. (143)

  Highlights:
Hooded Warbler
2 Cerulean Warblers
Acadian Flycatcher
Black-billed Cuckoo
Lark Sparrow
Eurasian Collared Dove
2 Western Grebes
2 Red-necked Grebes
Scarlet Tanagers (many)

Oh, and one bird that started off my day in a nice way was a calling Common
Nighthawk above my apt. building at 4:45 am.

Good birding!

Re: [mou-net] Hooded Warbler?

2010-05-01 Thread Julian Sellers
It's rare but possible. There is a sizable breeding population of Hooded
Warblers in Murphy-Hanrehan Regional Park (Three Rivers Park District).
(Bruce Fall is the expert on that.) In recent years, the species has been
reported from various locations in MN, including Battle Creek Park and
Crosby Farm Park in St. Paul. If your location was on Stewart Ave between
Rankin St and Homer St, that's just a block north of Shepard Road and Crosby
Farm Park. I have seen Hooded Warblers in the bluff woods below Shepard
Road on 5/24/03 and 5/19/09. In Birds in Minnesota, Bob Janssen lists April
22 and April 30 as the earliest spring dates for Hooded Warblers in
Minnesota.

Hi Birders!
Out for a mid day casual birding walk with a beginning birder (the lovely

Lebanon Hills Regional Park* (Dakota County). A Lifer for us! I heard them
for the first time last year in Murphy-Hanrehan doing BBS but never actually
saw one until today. I hope I find them on my BBS too!

*Specific Directions:*
I found the bird around 3pm singing about 100 ft N of the #41 intersection
on the way towards #47 (the Discovery Trail, I think it's called).
Approaching from the South would get you in there the quickest. We
approached from the North.

Got fairly good looks at it for over a minute as it sang and tussled briefly
with a Red-eyed Vireo.

Other birds of note found today in the park:
*Eastern Wood Pewee* -FOY
*Red-eyed Vireo* -FOY - many
*Indigo Bunting* -FOY
*Eastern Towhee*
*Cooper's Hawk*
*Least Flycatcher*
*Baltimore Orioles*
*Pileated Woodpecker*
*Rose-breasted Grosbeak* -heard only
**
Expected Birds NOT found/heard in the park today:
*Thrushes*
*Other Warblers*
*Great-crested Flycatcher*
*Scarlet Tanager* (hoping for anyways)

[mou-net] Hooded Warbler Alternate Song

[mou-net] Hooded Warbler at Louisville Swamp, Scott County

2009-05-19 Thread Bob Dunlap
Barry Jones just called to report a male Hooded Warbler at Louisville
Swamp in Scott County. Go south of the main parking lot to the top of
the bluff overlooking the valley, then take the trail to the left. This
trail heads down the hill toward some old farm ruins; just before the
ruins on the left (north) side of the trail there is a spot of thick
woods from which the bird was boldly singing. This is apparently the
same area as last year where one was present.

[mou-net] Hooded Warbler, Crosby Park, St. Paul

2009-05-19 Thread Julian Sellers
I led a walk at Crosby Farm Park from 7:00 to 9:00 this morning. From the end
of the main road into the park, we walked down toward the small lake, then to
the left on the old paved path between the lake and the bluff. A couple of
hundred yards down this path, we heard an unidentified song, and the fifteen
(or so) of us spent about fifteen minutes searching in vain for the singer. At
9:15, Linda Kellar and I returned to try again. The bird was still singing,
and Linda got a brief look that was enough to identify it as a Hooded Warbler.
I spent another hour searching as the bird sang almost constantly and moved
about. I finally got an eye-level view at a distance of 30 feet from the trail
up on the bluff. Be aware that the bluff trail is poorly maintained and the
foot bridges have been vandalized. I was able to get up to the bluff trail at
the place where the main path turns into the wetland, and could return to the
HOWA place on the bluff trail.

The voice had the right quality for a HOWA, but the syllables sounded like,
"Flip a de hip sweet SWEET!" with a tiny pause after "Flip." I figure it
wintered in the Caribbean. From a distance, with only the ending audible, it
sounded like an Acadian Flycatcher.

Last Saturday, I checked for Prothonotary Warblers in the SE corner of the
park, and found none. I have not checked there since then.

birding and posting, and we know what wins.)

A daylong trip Saturday to the E. Cannon River Wilderness and
Nerstrand Woods State Park yielded great looks at the following, among
others:
redstart, magnolia, yellow, c. yellow-throat, golden-wing, blue-wing,
cerulean, Cape May (seen by two of the party), chestnut-sided, palm,
and hooded warbler; Tennessee and Nashvilles (heard only); ovenbirds;
house wrens; blue-gray gnatcatchers; scarlet tanager; yellow-bellied
sapsucker; Swainson's and gray-cheeked thrushes; bluebirds; veery;
indigo bunting; E. towhee; rose-breasted grosbeak; great-crested
flycatcher; catbird; cuckoo (heard only, from across the river);
warbling, yellow-throated, and blue-headed vireos (heard); Cooper's
and red-tail hawks.
The prairie burn area was heavily populated with thrushes. The hooded
warbler was beyond the entry-ravine, very near the second boardwalk.
It flew low, across the path just in front of us, landing on a low
branch just a couple of feet away from the trail. It chipped, never
sang, but gave excellent, though brief, looks.
The other highlight was the sapsucker (male) entering a cavity. He
went all the way in, then poked out his head to stare back at
us---most charming turn-about. En route there were a meadowlark,
shrike, and E. phoebe. At Nerstrand we did spot the red-headed
woodpecker in the main campground, fleetingly, as he took off into the
woods. Altogether, it was a great day.

Subject: [mou-rba] hooded warbler on the am of the 14th, minneapolis

At 830am on 14 May, a male hooded warbler (along with 15 other warbler
species, 4 species of vireo, 3 species of thrush) was spotted by Eric
Wornson at Roberts bird sanctuary on the northeast side of Lake Harriet in
Minneapolis. From the east entrance near the Peace Park, walk the plastic
boardwalk trail to where the plastic boardwalk ends. The bird was seen in
the woods on the right side of the plastic boardwalk trail right where the
board walk ends.

[mou-net] Hooded Warbler, Minneapolis

2009-05-10 Thread Stephen Greenfield
In a short visit (after all, it's Mothers' Day) to Roberts sanctuary, I saw
a male Hooded Warbler in the eastern end of the sanctuary. It was singing
vociferously, and had moved to the north trail (named Bossen Road) by the
time I left after 8.

There were not many other warblers around (as has seemed the case all
spring), or flycatchers or thrushes. But I don't think I've ever seen
Caspian Tern in (well, over) Roberts before.

[mou-net] Hooded Warbler - Rice Co.

2009-04-27 Thread Dave Bartkey
Hi everyone,

Saturday afternoon (4/25), Gene Bauer had called me stating that he and Lyle
Myers had found a male Hooded Warbler in the Cannon River Wilderness Park, west
side. Tonight after work, I thought it a long shot but I stopped home and
grabbed my daughter Emma to accompany me on a walk to see what we could find.
We re-found the Hooded Warbler in the same area Gene had spotted it on
Saturday! The west side of Cannon River Wilderness Park is located off of Hwy.
3, 8 miles south of Northfield. Turn left onto 151st St. E. and go 1.3 miles to
the parking lot. From the lot, keep to the right along the woodline and you
will see a red gate. This marks the trail you want to follow. Keep on this
trail and follow along the river. Look for the warbler around where the trail
starts curving to the left, just past where the trail is very close to eroding
away. It was foraging low, and when we first spied it, it was probably less
than two feet away from our knees! Very good looks without binocs! While
observing it, it flew across the river but we could still hear it doing its
unique "chip".

Emma and I had 7 species of warbler here tonight plus Blue-gray Gnatcatcher!

Good birding!
