The Minnesota River Valley Audubon Chapter (MRVAC) invites you to join us
for:
*“The Conservation of Golden-winged Warblers:Nesting and Fledgling Behavior
and Habitat”*
*Brett Howland: Master’s student at University of Minnesota- Duluth*

*Thursday, April 27, 7:30 PM*
Golden-winged Warblers have the smallest breeding population of any
non-protected bird in the United States. Their decline has been attributed
to many causes such as breeding habitat loss, competition with the
Blue-winged Warbler, and invasion of the Brown-headed Cowbird. In
Minnesota, they breed in early successional and shrubby wetland habitat.
Because these birds experience high rates of nest failure and fledgling
mortality, it is important to understand how habitat influences
nest survival and fledgling survival.

*The effects of a honey bee pathogen on colony resiliency *

My research examines the effects of the emerging honey bee pathogen, Nosema
ceranae, on the physiology and behaviors involved with the division of
labor in honey bee workers. I have found that N. ceranae may disrupt the
basic underpinnings thought to regulate the age-specific tasks that workers
perform during their lives. Infection with this fungus may be a
contributing factor to recent high colony mortality.

Langur Eco Travels of Bhutan. His country was closed to outside visitors
until 1970. Today, Cubzang is dedicating his life to share the wonders of
his homeland with others.

Only half the size of Indiana, Bhutan is considered one of the world’s top
ten biodiversity hot spots. Its deeply rooted culture of Tantric Mahayana
Buddhism stresses that inhabitants take care of the land and maintain the
pristine environment in order that life thrives. Bhutan is one of the few
unspoiled areas remaining in the world. The country mandates that
two-thirds of the land remains under forest cover respecting the ancient
landscape.

This September 27 event promises to be an intriguing armchair journey into
one of the world’s truly remote ancient kingdoms.

the Minnesota River in Bloomington. A long neglected wetland was reborn.
The program Wilderness in a Wetland is a photographic exploration of this
unique 100 acre marsh over 15 years. The photographs and narrative document
the remarkable recovery of this special wetland.
