I can't say that about any microsoft product.

Main problem of Oracle products is to install them: The installation process NEVER

Re: Announcing the first public release of UZIX

1999-07-01 Thread Manuel Bilderbeek

I would like to present you a new operating system for MSX. It's
 called UZIX.
   What is UZIX?
UZIX is a UNIX implementation for MSX.
UZIX is based on UZI written by Douglas Braun and ported to PC
and MSX by Archi Schekochikhin and me, Adriano C. R. da Cunha.
UZIX implements almost all 7th Edition ATT UNIX kernel
functionality. UZIX's code was based on public domain Doug Braun's UZI, which
was written from scratch, and contains no ATT code, so it is not subject
to any of ATT's copyright or licensing restrictions.
UZIX implements almost all of the 7th Edition functionality. All file
I/O, directories, mountable file systems, user and group IDs, pipes, and
applicable device I/O are supported. The number of processes is limited
only by the swap space available, with a maximum of 31 processes (total of
1024k memory). UZIX implements UNIX well enough to run the Bourne Shell in
its full functionality, although it has not been ported.
UZIX is still in development, but there is already a running
version, that includes a shell and many utilities. Although it's still a
beta, it took much effort and time to be made.

Whoow! This sounds real cool! I hope you will continue with this project! I'll try to
test it real soon. Does it work with MSX-DOS2? (Is it compatible with it?)

Re: Direct sector access

I'm about to write one but don't like to reinvent the wheel.

It already exists, it's called DiskView 2.1, and it's nearly perfect!

Oops! But it seems it cannot write a boot sector out of a file. I need
 something like:

   FUDECOPY filename drive starting sector
and/or: FUDECOPY drive starting sector # of sectors filename

 That's it. A partial disk image reader/writer.

Hmm, Compass can do that, I believe. It can read a sector to RAM, write piece
of RAM to sector, and ofcourse it can also read/write Binary files Isn't
this what you need?

Hmmm, think of this, there are sony digital camera's that store your
pictures directly to floppy disk, compressed in JPEG.
Those camera's use a chip, capable of realtime JPEG compression. I
don't
know about decompression, I haven't had the opportunity to examine the
camera up close, but I can imagine that it exists.
Don't invent the wheel twice, look around...

Maybe nice to know that I have got such a camera? Or rather, my father.
It actually sucks, because the resolution of the photos is very low
 (320x240)...

It sucks? MSX2 Screen 8 resolution is 256x212.. Yeah 256x424 if you want a
 headache.

Yes, it sucks, because all other cameras use a minimum resolution of
640x480. And that's a very big difference... I'd like my photos to be sharp.
And by the way, screen 8 is ugly too. What about screen 7 with a resolution
of 512x512???

Oh, by the way, I ran a li'll program on the background so I could test the
"overscan"-mode in screen 0, but oh what a surprise: the top 7 lines weren't
displayed anymore! Well that ain't a problem but it's definately strange.

Anyway, it would suffice for images on most webpages wouldn't it? a page
with images bigger than that should be banned anyway...=)

Ofcourse, but you can resize large images to small ones, not vice versa.
It was more expensive than other cameras which are in fact much better. Only
this one has a diskdrive in it for floppies. Easy, ok, I definately agree on
that. But nice-looking, no. Definately not. By the way, it's very large and
quite heavy (for a camera).

If Windows wasn't good and easy-to-use then it wouldn't have been
installed
 on (almost) every new PC.

Windows sounds nice, but it's really terribly-written, and unpredictable.

Then you write a multitasking OS which support so much hardware!

But, I agree BeOS is a nice OS... Especially the 404 error message...

Ever tried to install a scanner on Win59? -)
  Nice blue screens ...

You have definately never seen the 404 error message in BeOS 4.
Anyways, my scanner did install fine in Windows. I think what you are
talking about is not the fault of Windows, but of the developers of the
drivers of your scanner. I think it is good that Windows intercepts fatal
 actions.

Bill Gates tried to install a scanner in Windows 98, during the worldwide
presentation of this new version. Result: blue screeen and reset button.

Ever occurred to you that Windows was still in Beta-stage then? It was the
first time it was showed to public!

~Grauw "Why don't you guys admit that Windows isn't that bad?"

 Windows isn't bad, it's disgusting!

If you think about it that way then --why-- do you use it??? I don't know
about OS/2 Warp, but hasn't it got bugs too??? It seems to me it has... only
nobody uses it (less user-friendly?) so you all don't know if OS/2 is better
then Windows. Just screamin' around a bit and nailing on Microsoft. Just to
be cool, it seems to me.

I have to write a gfx data burst to VRAM as quickly as possible while the
display, and possibly sprites are enabled.

I've noticed data corruption when using quick transfer loops (via POP)
that
 disappears when display is disabled.

Is there an accurate way to determine required VDP timings and ensure
proper functionality on all MSX models regardless of different clocked
CPUs?

Just keep in mind to have at least 7 t-states between every transfer (=OUT),
then it will work on all MSX-computers (OTIR and INIR are slow enough too).
MSX-turboR and 7MHz have automatic slowdowns implemented to that works too.

Win95 vs OS2/w last word

1999-07-01 Thread andre . vandun

This is my last answer about w95 vs os2/warp.
first, os2/warp works perfect after you have learned how to work with it.
second in many industries and print-studio's os2/warp is used for
applications which need to be trusted on. (so make your own conclusion.)

And for w95, it's good to have a competitor then they need to improve there quality
(i only hope that next time they leave their easter eggs out of the software
(office,nt,w95,ie)
this saves a lot of harddisk space)

There is also a big difference between osr 0,1,2,2b which have all there own their
improved
drivers. For example if you have an old system (486 + vlb/pci) please use 0 or 1 else
2b.

To end my mail i want to say the following : Bug free software can't be made if the
product managers
tell the programmers when their products must be finished. (this statement is valid
for both microsoft
and me)

This was it about this subject.

Yes. It ignores MSX-DOS2.

MegaSCSI users can write the demo disk-image in a extended

Yes. Try calling "clock " in the sash prompt. It's stupid, but is
the best example of background processing. Examine it with top. Later,
kill it using the kill command.

Will there also be a c-shell clone, like tcshell?

A better shell is in our plans.

(Which is great! bash would be great too, ofcourse! I saw you were working on
the shell to get it as much bash as possible. Do scripts work too?)

The actual default shell of UZIX, sash, is very limited. Scripts
can be only recognizable commands.
BUT nothing disallows you compiling any shell you want to UZIX.
The original UZI could run the Bourne Shell in its full
functionality. So, UZIX also can. It "just" need to be compiled.

Manuel,

MegaSCSI users can write the demo disk-image in a extended
partition, select it at A: drive and boot UZIX without problems.
 What about Novaxis?

I don't know Novaxis. I know MegaSCSI. MegaSCSI can simulate
floppies in extended partitions. That's why UZIX works with MegaSCSI.
If Novaxis function in the same way of MegaSCSI/IDE, patching
DiskROM 4010h, UZIX can access the Novaxis drive.

Now UZIX can access any MSX disk-drive, floppy or HD. But you
can't access MegaSCSI/IDE partitions for now (/dev/hda and similars are

 And on Novaxis?

Give me detailed information about programming Novaxis, and it
will be supported when MegaSCSI/IDE direct access will be made.

And, what format does it use on diskdrives? Compatible with Unix or MSX-DOS ?
It's a proprietary format. Maybe another UZI-derived OS
  (UZI280, UZI180, etc) can read it... I don't know...
So it is compatible with all formats?

I don't understand what you mean with "all formats".
UZIX FS is a proprietary format. MSXDOS doesn't understand. Linux
doesn't understand. MINIX doesn't understand.
MAYBE UZI, UZI280, UZI180 or ATT UNIX 7th Ed. understands, but I
don't know.

As any UNIX, you can't undelete files. :)
So deleted files on a diskette can also not be undeleted with MSX-DOS2? (This

UZIX disks can't be read by MSXDOS2.
And also, UZIX can't read MSXDOS2 diskettes. Well, not now.
Sometime in the future I'll make mtools...

Will there also be a c-shell clone, like tcshell?
A better shell is in our plans.
 Better than tcsh? Impossible! :-)

I mean a better shell than the actual shell, sash.

Well, I'm not good in compiling, especially not with Hi-Tech C... Maybe you

For now, there are 50 utils compiled for UZIX. All of them are in

 Another thing: is UZIX multi-user?

Yes.

No.
Maybe in the future...

Manuel,

Give me detailed information about programming Novaxis, and it
will be supported when MegaSCSI/IDE direct access will be made.
I can send you the manual in WP-format, Gert de Boom sent it to me once.

Nice.
But if it's in dutch, I'll have _much_ problem...

For now, there are 50 utils compiled for UZIX. All of them are in
the demo disks available on UZIX page.
Ok, is it much work to compile an average util, like top or so?

You're reading messages too fast... :)
In the previous message about clock, I told you "use top to check
the processes".
Your answer is yes, it's a little work, but it's possible.

How can I test the multi-user features?

By now, only logging as different users (login as root, use,
logout, login as user, use, logout, login as guest, use, logout, etc).

   compiled!
  In my 5x86 100MHz, about 1 minute...

So top is not a good example. It was written from scratch.
The time to port a program to UZIX depends of your C knowledge,
the program size and complexity. I can't give you a precise value.
For example, some proggies like bogomips, whoami and uname didn't
need any port. Just compiling. But man, grep and tar, for example, took an
entire day each one.

I mean, not with virtual terminals, but just occupying the other terminal.
E.g. user1 logs in, and starts 2 background jobs. Then, he types somting as
"login user2", and user2 logs in. He can now also start bg jobs. When he does

Oh, yes.
I confess I never tried it, but it's possible. If it doesn't work,
you discovred a bug, and I'll fix it. I'll try it tonight...

WHEN it hangs? What you see on screen?
 I see only:
 Welcome to UZIX 0.1.2

When I don't, I get: Mounting root fs: [cursor]

Bingo. Interrupt.
fMSX2.0 is fudeba.
It's interrupt bug. fMSX bug.

I tested it in fMSX-DOS 1.6b2, CJS 1.0b, TR GT, TR ST, ACVS 2++,

Hah, and not in fMSX 2.0! So it might be 'fudeba' indeed!

Fudeba is fMSX! :)
I don't like emulators. I don't use fMSX. It's in my PC for
emergencies and for being another test-plataform (since my only MSX now is
my TR).

That's way too slow I only use the $9f routine for
the delay of the cursor!! (try hitting D a while.. you'll
notice a delay...) Well the $9f has the delay build in,
so I don't have to code my own routine for that..
I also do not use the output of the BIOS function.. It's
purely because of the delay..

(and btw. I do out directly to the VRAM)

FDSAVE: Copy sectors to a file
FDLOAD: Copy a file to sectors
FDCOPY: Copy sectors from one disk to another disk.

Example of FDSAVE syntax:

FDSAVE drive filename.ext [/Sxx] [/Exx|/Nxx]
  /Sxx: Start sector
  /Exx: End sector
  /Nxx: Number of sectors

I hope this helps you further in your quest for the ideal sector manipulation

]
] Ever occurred to you that Windows was still in Beta-stage then? It was the

It indeed was the official release to the public. Hence, it was not a beta
release.

But then again, with many softwares on the win32 platform you can never see
the distinction between the beta release and the official release. All
releases are crap and unstable. Wether they come from Microsoft or from some
other software vendor. Which is not that surprising if you consider the
complexity and the total lack of design and consistency of the win32 api and
everything related. And the win32 api is HACKED together by Microsoft. So, we
do have to blame them for the mess that the Wintel world is in these days.

Now you may wonder why I still have win95 installed on my PC. Simple: because
some applications that I use run only under windows. Though, 95% of my time I
work under Linux because most applications that I want to use are also
available in a Linux flavor. And since the Linux/Unix api's are much better
designed, the applications running on top of them are also much more stable.
So no blue screens or crashes for me :-))
