[MSX] Encouraging Event in Korea

2010-03-31 Thread Jun Sung Kim \(김준성\)

Hello MSX users over the World!

This time, I'd like to inform you a news that MSX user meeting will be held on
Saturday 3rd, April in Seoul, Korea.
This event is organized by a MSX user club, "Paradise of MSX" and open to all
MSX users in Korea (and World)

Although it is expected that few MSX users will join, this will be really
inspiring event in this century.
The event will be a good starting point for die-hard MSX users from Korea to
make a relationship between them.

Have a Nice Day!

Greetings from Korea,
Jun

[MSX] DOS2 format procedure

2006-09-21 Thread Jun Sung Kim

Thanks a lot for the previous DOS2 slot handling issue.
That was not the bug of mine ^^

Now I have another question for DOS2.

I have a disk format routine and it works fine but after format is
completed, DOS2 says:

"Invalid parameters" (or similar message)

It seems that DOS2 calls disk format routine in DISK ROM and read some
data back from the formatted disk.

What field does DOS2 check from formatted disk?

Greets,
Jun

[MSX] DOS2 slot management

2006-09-18 Thread Jun Sung Kim

Hello MSX users

I have a question for DOS2 slot management.

According to the manual, application program does not need to restore
slot-page-mapping (except page 3).

But it seems not correct.. because when my program changes the slot
number of page 1 and exit (function call #0), DOS2(command2.com) is
corrupted. When it restores that slot to the main RAM slot and exit,
it's ok.

Do you have any experience about that? What is the truth..?

Greetings,
Jun.

[MSX] media descriptor

2006-08-29 Thread Jun Sung Kim

Hello,

Media descriptor is used to differentiate disk types.

For example, F9h indicates 2DD (floppy).

I need full description (table) of media descriptor for MSX and PC.
(Some descriptor of MSX system seems to conflict to PC's.
F8h is used for 1DD in MSX system but for HDD in PC system. Right?)

If you have such an information, let me know.

Re: [MSX] Why Sunrise ATA-IDE I/F does not work?

2005-10-31 Thread Jun Sung Kim \(???\)

Thanks for the FAST reply :)

But...
I missed some descriptions...

I have _used_ HDD with Sunrise ATA-IDE on the MSX2+ in serveral years.
One day, that did not work... Of course I have an enough memory (1MB memory
mapper) and
MSX-DOS2... All other cartridges work fine (Or just seem to be fine...) execept
ATA-IDE.

Most important fact is that
"ATA-IDE not detected - flash loader cannot find that"

Again, ATA-IDE is detected on other MSX2 machine.
I believe that my F1XV has a hardware problem.. somewhere in expansion slot
logics...

2005-10-31 Thread Jun Sung Kim \(김준성\)

Hello!

Many years ago, my MSX2+(Sony F1XV) was partially broken...
It seems that some signals of expansion slot does not work..

The Facts are:

1) ROM cartridge works
2) MoonSound works
3) ATA-IDE not detected (Detected on MSX2, Daewoo)

Maybe, someone can answer this.

Ask yourself why you use MSX still... ^^

X3 is a project to make a new MSX-like system. It includes H/W and S/W
development. X3b is the first setup toward the final X3 H/W.

X3b M/B is a MSX2 clone. The differences are:
- Z80380 CPU
- no RTC.
- More memory.

Currently MSX1 BIOS runs on X3b M/B although I can't type anything...
I'll test PSG, OPLL, keyboard interface and examine if any problem exists
to execute MSX2 BIOS.

There is a page that describes that machine but it's under construction
and No English Page yet sorry.

More powerful RTC may not be compatible to MSX2 standard.
Different H/W requires Different BIOS.
Anyway, RTC chip is rare to buy in Korea.

Did you change only main-ROMs?

Re: [MSX] minimum hardware configuration

2003-02-04 Thread Jun Sung Kim (???)

Hi again,

Maybe some of you misunderstood me...

I want the minimum configuration NOT for MSX standard
but for EXECUTING EXISTING BIOS.

Ok. How about this?
I have a MSX2 machine and replace MSX2 BIOS ROM with MSX BIOS ROM.
Then does the MSX2 machine work?
How about in the reverse case (MSX2 ROM to MSX machine)?

Another case:
I have two different MSX2 models, and if I replace their ROMs with each
other,
then do they work?

The curiousity, Jun.

* PPI is needed to set up address space because of the slot/page conception
of MSX standard.
* So PPI must be configured at a very early stage of boot sequence.
* Hmmm... To configure PPI, boot codes in ROM should be executed.
* That ROM should be configured in memory space correctly before exection of
the codes.
* To configure that space, PPI should be configured... !#$%^&* ^^

[MSX] minimum hardware configuration

for MSX BIOS to run.

For example,

If I have an existing MSX(2) BIOS ROM and have a strange board

can I expect MSX logo on screen?

This question is the same as the reset status :)

Re: [MSX] reset status

Not "memory mapper", just "memory map".

Thanks anyway ^^

- Jun.

* I think that (boot) ROM should be selected by hardwired manner to execute
initialization codes.
* That (boot) ROM may be MSX ROM of slot 0 (or slot 0-0). If true, slot 0
(or 0-0)
must be selected for page 0 by hardware reset.
* Then how about RAM? Is RAM located at page 3 after reset MSX?
* Another question now ^^: When is "memory MAPPER" initialized as follows?

Re: [MSX] MSX without slots?

2002-12-20 Thread Jun Sung Kim (???)
Hi,

Although you mentioned a lot of facts,
there was no answer for me.

According to the features you written, new MSX is on my desk.
An XScale (Intel/ARM) -based small computer...
It has a USB port of course... and Linux is being ported now...

The important fact is that I cannot feel fun with that board... I don't like
to make
something for that board...

So I need another board/computer to feel fun... although you have a MSX
machine
for you... that will be not functional soon, like my MSX (T.T)

I need "OLD technology-based but NEW" machine...
That is my small conclusion.

Greetings,

Jun.

Re: [MSX] MSX without slots?

2002-12-19 Thread Jun Sung Kim (???)

Hello still-MSXers,

I have a question.
"What is MSX computer?"

The answer seems to become more confused... after the revolution of
EMULATOR.

USB... and slot expander is connected to it.
Already good H/W exists... PC is that...
Why need new MSX hardware then?

The one of the reasons that I like MSX is the easiness to make hardwares.
USB gives me a certain barrier to design new hardwares...
Even if USB-slot expander exists, how should I drive my new hardwares...?
Ok, device driver/OS can do that. Only one I must do is just making a call
back functions...

Hmm... I have such a machine... named PC It needs not slot expender,
various
peripherals directly connected to USB are already available Moreover,
MSX softwares
run!

"What is MSX computer?"
If you have an answer, let me know

Greetings,

Jun.

* PS: Anyway, my MSX board project goes on its way (NO USB SUPPORTED ^^)

Indeed, my player does pre-conversion (although not perfect), but still
cannot
overcome any of that problems. So I wait for more powerful MSX ^^

Jun.

* PS: maybe there is any midi(SMF)-to-xxx conversion program as far as I
know.
* PS2: Due to the high time-resolution of SMF, conversion to MWM format is
theoretically impossible.

I'm sure that you have not listen to the crazy-scrambled sounds generated
by MY
midi-file player for MoonSound ^^

The real problem is not related to the audio device... because
midi-file player is, say, REAL-TIME decompressor+sequencer.

MSX (Z80) is not enough computation power for that. I'm not sure but even
with TR,
it's difficult to make good midi-file player. Strictly speaking, PERFECT
midi-file player
is impossible(?) for even Pentium processor...

From more experiments, I found a clue.
A R_O_M_ cartridge is not accessed. So my intermediate conclusion is
that CS1/2/12 signal(s) is/are not functional (memory mapper cartridge
works!). Maybe the IDE interface uses any of those signals...?

 Or is another story possible?

My MSX is going to die... :(

IDE interface not detected

2001-05-01 Thread Jun-Sung Kim

 Hi,

Suddenly, yes, suddenly, my pretty Sunrise ATA-IDE interface does
not work on my lovely MSX2+(Sony XV) :(

No initial message is displayed. It looks like that the interface
is not detected.

The strange thing is that it is detected(initial message is displayed)
on another MSX2 machine(Daewoo).

I did several tests to solve the problem.
 - I checked power: ok
 - I changed the slot: the same result. Other cartridge works fine
even in the same slot on which the IDE interface does not work.
 - I dumped the content of the area occupied by the IDE interface:
   All are filled with FFh.

 What's wrong? Any clue?
The IDE interface uses special signals that other cartridges
seldom use?

 Hi,

I did some tests by myself.
MSXDOS2 was successfully run on Korean MSX2 (CPC-300) with FDD.

The conclusion is that the problem is now:

"MSXDOS2 is not run on Korean MSX2 (CPC-300) with HDD that is
partitioned by another MSX2+ (Japanese) computer."

When I obtain a spare HDD, more tests are possible...

I guess that DOS2 is not functional in a Korean MSX2. So MSXDOS2.SYS and
COMMAND2.COM can't be accessed.

One interesting fact is that MEGA-SCSI works in Korean MSX2. And
it's kernel is DOS2.3x. So I want to test IDE interface with other
DOS kernels. Of course, it's not sure that the reason why MEGA-SCSI
works correctly is DOS2 kernel. More tests ... needed...

MoonSound related questions

1999-02-18 Thread Jun-Sung Kim

 Hello MSX freaks!

I'm making music drivers for MoonSound. So I want:

 - WAVE samples(or tone numbers for the sample ROM)
   for all(128) GM instrunments
 - FM(OPL3) samples for all(128) GM instrunments
 - descriptions of the tables in patches.mac
(one of the MBWAVE driver source codes)
 - MFM/MWM/M?? file formats
 - description of the sample ROM in MoonSound

And I have a question: is there any converter from
 MFM/MWM to MWM/MFM?

I want your help. Any information is welcome.

Now is the time to make new one. Then I'll be happy even though my MSX
would be broken because I can possess new MSX again.

You are right. Almost all MSX emulator users had MSXs. When they met
the emulator, they was very happy because they could use great MSX softwares.
And ... it's all. It's end. They just tried to run softwares once and then
never tried after.

That situation is ok. I don't care whether they use emulators or not.
But the important point is that the number of real MSX usres decreases
due to the emulator. A lot of real MSX users putted their MSXs into somewhere
untouchable-place because they could run some MSX softwares on PC.
They do not use real MSX anymore and they do not use even the emulator now.
I don't know exactly the situation in other countries. But I'm quite sure
that many MSX users have left MSX scene due to the emulators.

Well, I think you are a very GOOD MSX emulator user. I've never seen
a guy who buy softwares for MSX emulator. However, I don't consider
making such a copy-protection in my softwares.

Re: My MSX project + protect mode

1999-02-10 Thread Jun-Sung Kim

Hi,

 Lately about the protected mode...

If you want to implement it, minimize it.
The reason that I like MSX, is the full controllability. MSX is a
PERSONAL Computer, so all results are responsible to the user.

Well, it may be also good to prevent the important system area
being crushed in another point of view. Then I suggest that
just some memory space can be protected optionally. In AHDL style :),

 mem_protect = ( A[31] == b"1" ) and not(super);

The simplest way! ( I like always "simple" :)

By the way, did you fix the memory usage(physical/logical memory
configurations) and the slot pin assignment?

I, myself, thought to make two separate memories.
When access below 64KB space, memory module A(4MB, memory mapper,
MSX2 standard) is accessed. Otherwise, memory module B(16MB or more
for Z380) is accessed. In other words, same physical memory location
is not accessed via two different address.

My approach wastes 64KB of memory module B. But it's possible to
use the space as usefull system memory.

 Just one suggestion.

Re: Turbo R?

1999-02-10 Thread Jun-Sung Kim

Hi all,

 About the R800 clock speed...
I don't know it exactly. But I think the minimum clock cycle of
an instruction is 1/7MHz(140ns). In general, many CPU need higher
clock frequency than the instruction frequency. For example,
the external clock is devided by two and two different clocks(say ph1,ph2)
are generated. One is used for reading and another one is inverted and
used for writing. In the case of LD A,B instruction, read B by rising edge
of ph1 and write the value to A by rising edge of ph2 are executed in turn.

Anyway you need not to know that how many clocks are internally
used. If the system clock is 7MHz, I guess this means
that the fastest instruction is executed at 7MHz frequency.

>

Z380 is the only choice. It is the faster Z80 with enhanced instructions.

Current Z380 works at 18MHz which corresponds to 7MHz of Turbo R.
However, the fastest instruction of Z380 needs two clocks(9MHz) as I remember.
Therefore, if you use only the fastest instructions, Z380 is slightly faster
than R800.

If 40MHz Z380 comes out, Z380 rules! I don't know when it will come out and
if it will or not.

I think the emulation of R800 is not good way. Even with 40MHz Z380, we cannot
obtain the R800 speed. Turbo R compatible will be impossible.

>

As I remember, the Omega project uses Z382 which uses I/O ports internally.
I doubt it is possible to make MSX compatible machine with Z382.

A lot of projects were announced. Jupiter project, Omega project,
MSX380 project, MMSX project, Genesis project... However,

None of them is realized. Or they don't want to inform the progress?

I don't think at all that the memory mapper is a problem. You can
build a memory mapper compatible to MSX2 and you can run DOS2 softwares
on you new machine, say MSX3.

Also you can build huge memory for 4G linear address space of Z380.
And new softwares based on MSX3 can use the linear address. I think
that we need a standard in the memory structure for MSX3. One method
is to build a switch for changing the memory structure. And other
method is to use address decoding. For example, memory mapper when
the address is below 64KB, and linear address when >64KB.

VDP is a problem really. I don't know V9958/V9990 is available now.
But I think Flex10K is very expensive and not fast enough. I'm currently
using 10K50. It is very hard (seems to be impossible) to obtain 30MHz
performance when logics become complex. VDP is very complex...

I hope that Yamaha produces VDPs... Or we force him to produce...?

We love MSX.

1999-02-10 Thread Jun-Sung Kim

Hi all MSX/emulator freaks,

Well, I also want to stop this boring disccussion...

Firstly, I'm sorry to trigger this fighting... But I can't
understand why it became fighting...

First subject was the new standard of emulator. And I wrote
that it was nonsense. Still I think so.

Second subject was a question, "Why hate emulator?" And I
wrote that it decrease MSX users. Still I think so. Hey,
I DON'T mean VERY YOU! I'm saying about general situations.
I know some emulator users bought real MSX again. How great?
But think.. that is not important. Why? As you know, MSX
will be broken someday. Then they will use emulator only.

In my opinion, it is no meaning whether emulator users have
real MSX or not. Emulator users prefer to emulator than real
MSX. That means the emulator users prefer to PC and its
environments. Maybe, for some emulator users, it's not true.
But I'm saying about general emulator users. I hope that
I'm wrong...

Emulator users ask why I think them different than real MSX users.
The answer is this question.

 "Which computer do you use?"

I can say, "I USE MSX computer", of course. But lots of emulator
users must say, "I USE P333 with 3D card... and it can emulate
MSX...~

Most emulator users use emulators and don't want MSX computer.
They can do every thing including MSX emulation on their PC. It's
really cool! They really think that PC rules!

Let's think when real MSX is broken. It seems that some of you
think that we must use emulator, then. They assume that there
will be no real MSX computer. Then, we must point out followings.

Now in this mailing list, there is anothor discussion about so-called
DOS3. How stupid it is! Big partition? Useless. We must use PC soon
because we have no real MSX. If we need big partitions, let's use
the PC disk system.

Imagine... who makes MSX softwares when there is no real MSX.
For emulators? Why? It is better to make PC softwares directly.

It seems that there is a gap in mind for the MSX future. When
real MSX is broken, what should we do? Why don't think that
we can make hardwares? Yes. It's very difficult practically.
So must we give up?

Think that what is "ALIVE". I think that "ALIVE" is developing,
producing, selling, buying, consuming ... and it is not to run MSX
softwares occasionally. I think so.

Don't misunderstand me please. I don't want to attack any MSX
emulator users. I love MSX and MSX lovers! I'm very happy to
meet you, MSX lovers, online. I think always the future of MSX.
Please be positive. We can make new MSX standard. Why not?

PC is fast. Really fast. But it is not superior to MSX even
technically. I think so. Just MSX is consists of old stuffs
compared with current components. We can extend MSX knowledge
and develope new architecture for the future of MSX.

Thank you for reading... please think seriously the future
of MSX.

Official MSX3 is impossible until ASCII gives up the copyright.
And as a one user who dreams new generation of MSX... The problem is
only the fund. I want to give a serious question.

"If I make new MSX, will you buy one?"

For this question, someones say, "If it is fully compatible to MSX1,2,2+
and TR ...". Others say, "If it has very high performance...", etc, etc.

Of course, I know there are still many users who want new MSX regardless
to the condition. But not enough... If one million MSX users promise
that they will buy one, I can make new MSX until this year... why not?
Yeh.. it's a joke. But very serious...

Yes, I also want a public discussion. And these are just my opinions.

 1. NEW MSX WILL BE! : many hardare freaks try to make new hardwares.
Look at MoonSound, GFX9000, Mega-SCSI, new RS232Cs, keyboard interfaces,
ESE-VDP system, Goblin, 32 expansion slots, .. etc. etc. They devote
their time, money and efforts to the MSX-related hardware developement.
I really thank to them.

 2. extension of emulator is non-sense: it is better to make PC games,
utilities directly without "great real-time software conversion system"

As I remember, even in native mode(Z80 compatible), 32 bit linear
addressing is possible. In this case, we have MSX with 4G memory.
However, it's just for data not for program codes. Program counter is

I'm the author of the Korean program :)

The URL is correct. (Am I wrong? ;)
These days the network is very unstable, so you may have a problem
when access my http server. I think, if you have some lunk, you can
download MIDPLAY.

 I wrote MIDPLAY v0.0 and v0.1 for MSX-MUSIC because I didn't have
much knowledge of MoonSound at that time. From the version 0.2,
it has been written for MoonSound.

Anyway, I'm working on MIDPLAY v0.6. Sound will be better.

Greetings,

- Jun.
