Z380 is working!!!

1999-09-02 Thread jam

Hi Frengo

Madrid a few months ago. This new VDP is very-very-fast and it will
be compatabilized (does this word exist?) with the old V9958. Also,
Padial is working on a 3D engine for MMSX which is more than 5 times
faster than a PSX (something like a voodoo2 chip).
 F
F What's kind of chip is Padial using ? FPGA ? What kind of FPGA ?

Yep. it's a FPGA, but I don't know which FPGA is it. I'm sorry.

F Have you got news about Zilog ? I have received the information that
F Z80 family (Z380 included) will not be produced any more...

AFAIK, I visited Zilog web one or two weeks ago, and I didn't notice about
this. Z380 info is available yet.

Z380 is working!!!

Hello, JDS

JS videochip because it is put in a cartridgeslot and cartridges can't
 JS do
JS 'OUTs'. Therefore it will not be possible to run 'old' programs on the
JS Z380. (Even programs getting their vdp portnumbers from the bios,
JS won't work. So probably a second VDP has to be plugged in into the
 JS Z380 board?!
 JS
JS More or less this Z380 board is gonna be a kind of coprocessor ?! (or
JS of course: the Z80 can be 'VDP coprocessor' for the Z380)

Yes, the second VDP is the GFX9000 (V9990)

By the way, how did you solve the joystickport timing-problem???
Joystick and JoyNet would be glad to use the full speed of the Z380.
However, the Z380 is too fast for the mouse when a program is not using
BIOS-routines... A lot of programs won't use the BIOS for mouse-readout
though... So the mouse will then just not work??? Or could there be some
(software-)switch (change a bit somewhere in the MSX-Engine) to slow down
the joystickport I/O access?

Please don't slow down joystick port I/O access on account of JoyNet!

If you use a delay insensitive protocol, a faster CPU will speed up
transfer rates. Only a protocol that depends on timing will suffer.

Why is a protocol that depends on timing a bad thing?
1. You need to make different versions for 3.5MHz, 7MHz, turbo R and Z380.
2. The cable length matters (longer cables are slower).
3. Programs running on non-MSX computers (especially multitasking
environments) will be very difficult to write.

By the way, I think I have solved the lack of error detection in my
protocol. When I have more time, I will implement the improved protocol and
do some serious testing.

Bye,
Maarten

If you read carefully, you can see that I mention that the normal Joystick
AND JoyNet can use the full speed very well. I was talking about the problem
that the Z380 would be too fast to read the mouse... Even on a turboR this
is a problem (non-working mouse routines).

Well that's the problem. Almost no program but Illusion City (which actually
might work on Z380 because it doesn't use any non-Z380 R800 opcodes) uses
the BIOS for its mouseroutines (okay all Basic-programs use the BIOS too).

But mouseroutines are just to speed-sensitive to use the BIOS for... If the
BIOS would have bene programmed better... That would be a different story.

By the way, mouse works fine on my 7MHz MSX... Never had any problems... Or
wait a minute! I had! The mouse didn't work with Read Only Magazine (ROM)!!!
However I don't remember if it didn't work on 7MHz or also on 3.5MHz...

 Hello MSX world,

Two weeks ago Padial got the impossible, a Z380 based system board
started
to work in a MSX slot, finally he solved all the hardware problems and the
Z380 board is totally finished except in the software part.

Well that's great.

Now Padial wants to make a cheap 3D board for MSX, this is a good way to
test Phoenix platform, he wants collaboration from other hardware
developers
to stablish a common work for new developments.

Hmmm... 3D board?? Do you think anyone can and will program for that??? I
think ppl who can program 3D chips have switched to PC ages ago...

Anyways, I have some questions:
1. Will the memory on the Z380 board also be available for the Z80 (up to
4MB?)
2. Will it work from a subslot?
3. Can the Z380 adress the 'old' memory? (memory not in its DIMM sockets?)
4. Will the software be able to switch between Z380 and Z80 in a
turboR-alike way?
By the way, in a new BIOS, programs calling the CPU switchroutines to switch
to R800 should get a false return (or a system halted-alike message).
But maybe you can combine the Z380 CPU switch in the same routine...
5. Will the hardware-schemes be published so that every hardware developer
can make Z380 boards or even build them into a computer? (would be easier;
extra free slot)
6. Will the Z380 get its own cartridgeslot???
(I still have to see the cartridge made especially for the Z380)
7. Will the old Z80 software be able to run on Z380? Or do you need
Z380-specific software (which enables the Z380 first?)

  PHOENIX:

It is great the www.egroups.com page, could anybody be the administrator
of
the Phoenix mailing list??, the user who inform me about this site could
be
the administrator, so if you can start the new egroup, do it please and
inform us as soon as you did it.

Ah, Phoenix. I hope all specs and schemes or Phoenix will be subitted to the
Phoenix homepage???
Really hope so, for compatibility's sake...

 Hello MSX world,

Two weeks ago Padial got the impossible, a Z380 based system board started

This was the first time that I could see the Z380 plugged in a simple MSX-2
Philips 8235, till now I only have seen the Z380 board with testers and a PC
computer, there was another similar test in a MSX, but the Z380 board was
flamed in a shortcircuit, but now it is running without problems.

It is preferable to see it in some pictures and information, you can read
this in a special report located in our WEB:
