Yeap, I changed that. I hope it's okay now. But now, the index doesn't
show the name of the sender anymore. It only says "to
[EMAIL PROTECTED]". I suppose I have to adjust $index_format.

Thanks for the hint,

Or in case you seperate lists into folders and find the default from for
listed things annoying, look into 'followup_to'.

well you're the one who has:
Mail-Followup-To: Markus Nißl <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>,
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

set.

perhaps you want 'subscribe mutt-users' instead of 'lists mutt-users' in
your .muttrc?

Thanks for the line, but I don't think I will use if it slows
down things. I only kept wondering why mutt didn't display 's' in
the index for an e-mail which I got from a friend. He uses "The
Bat!" under Windows and PGP 6.5.8. I thought he had done
something wrong when signing his e-mail because that 's' wasn't
displayed. Now, I know what's going on.

Okay. At the end of your tutorial, you refer to the
Mutt-GnuPG-PGP-HOWTO. Well, that one isn't that up to date. Some
configuration variables don't exist anymore which are listed there to
be used for a gnupg setup. So that information is a bit misleading :-(

It can, if you're willing to wait. I have this commented out in my
muttrc, because I found it too slow:

folder-hook . "push 'T(!(~g | ~G)) ~b \"^-BEGIN PGP\"\n\eP\cT~A\n'"

I once spent a good chunk of time trying to get a message-hook to do
this for me. Check back in the archives; a couple of people worked with
me on it. I don't think we got anything to work out of it, though.

No.

pgp version 2 (=pgp2) uses RSA keys in key format version 3.
pgp2 is neither able to use other public key cryptography algorithms
nor to use newer key formats.

gpg is able to handle old (=pgp2) RSA format 3 keys
-- to a certain degree:
it is able to encrypt a message to such a key
it is able to decrypt a message for such a key
it is able to sign a message to such a key
it is able to to verify a signature of a message for such a key
it is able to decrypt and then verify the signature of an
  signed+encrypted message

but it is *not* able to sign+encrypt a message to such a key in a
way which pgp2 can operate succesfully on.

This is where gpg-2comp comes in. You use it solely to
sign a message with your old-style key and encrypt this signed
message to an old-style key for a pgp2 user.

In other cases you do not need gpg-2comp.

> > Note that you can not communicate with this setup with a user
> > who does not use RSA v3 keys...

and if you do not use one.

My advise: Take this gpg.rc *without* the gpg-2comp lines and use
it happily until you run into problems. Perhaps you don't
because you do not communicate with persons who use old keys.

S/MIME? Don't you mean PGP/MIME? I don't know of anything that
will convert PGP to S/MIME :-) And the conversion isn't necessary
now because you can recognize an old-style message with esc-P and thus
not risk mucking up your message by blatantly changing MIME headers.

So, in order to be able to communicate with anybody who uses any
version of pgp or gnupg, I have to use that script.

Okay, I did that.

I'm still pretty new to gnupg and cryptography in general. Which
users does that affect? gnupg doesn't use RSA, does it?

Thanks for your hints so far.

You need this wrapper script if and only if you want to
communicate signed+encrypted with a person who uses pgp2.6.x

If so you must remove the comment hashes '#' on lines which use
gpg-2comp and set hashes '#' on the correspioning lines without
gpg-2comp usage.

Note that you can not communicate with this setup with a user who
does not use RSA v3 keys...

But you can switch between different settings via macros.
