[MLO] Re: AHK hotstrings not triggering...

2022-09-07 Thread Steve Kunkel
Actually The *instant* that I posted that, it occurred to me to try
something... I have an app (Quick Access Popup) that is written in AHK. I
had recently set it to run in admin mode. It occurred to me to turn that
off, and now my hotstrings are working as expected in MLO. I have no idea
why that would make a difference, but so far so good.

Re: [MLO] How can I add task template?

2022-05-09 Thread Steve Kunkel
Remember also that there is a "New from template" command. Having said
that, I don't use that feature. For me, projects are "special ed cases."
Each project is a "folder" and has maybe 15 to 25 subtasks. About 10 of
those will always be the same, so they are in my templates. The subtasks
are just simple todo items, but there are dependencies. I go through maybe
6 or 8 projects per week. I name the folder by what type of case it is,
with angle-braces. (See pasted below). I make them "Hidden" then un-hide
them when I use them. To use one I just "Duplicate" the folder, then
rename it.

I gotta' agree with Jeff... Strong scripting abilities would be amazing!
And yes, it would take care of many future feature requests, because
advanced forum users could help people write custom scripts, add-ons, or
whatnot.

[MLO] Re: Buy 2 cloud items?

2022-05-09 Thread Steve Kunkel
Confirmed. I bought two of the "24 months" options. The email contained
the two codes. At first, I thought it was one code, that was on two
lines. When I pasted both lines it didn't work. Then I pasted just one
line and it added 24 months. After that I pasted the other line and it
added 24 more. I'm now all set for 1470 days.

[MLO] MLO-Win v6 Ideas...

2022-05-03 Thread Steve Kunkel
I had submitted one of these feature requests in the past; but will repost
it:

**Option to make task defer to parent's notes.*
What I mean is that, I like my parent folder to have all my case notes
(phone logs, observation notes, etc). The parent folder has many
subtasks. Those subtasks are simple todos though -- they *never *have
notes. So if one of those subtasks is currently selected, the notes pane
should display the notes for its parent folder. This would be a task-level
option; not an outline-level option. I can explain more if it helps.

**Only one folder from this branch can be expanded at a time. *
If I have many folders, or subfolders, of the same level (i.e. all siblings
of the same branch), then only one of them can be expanded at a time. If I
expand one, the other one collapses automatically. This would be an
outline-level setting. It would have to be easy to turn this setting on
and off.

**Rich Text in Notes. *
I tried getting used to Markdown, but it just doesn't work for me. I need
to be able to *edit *the notes and *see *them at the same time.

Thanks for considering.

*Stay Strong Ukraine!!!*

[MLO] Re: AHK code for multi-step thing

2021-03-25 Thread Steve Kunkel
Oddly, I've found that this code occasionally fails
I'll experiment more to see if it just needs a "sleep" command, or what...
Occasionally (but not always) the branch will get moved to the wrong
spot. There are two erroneous places that it sometimes goes. Sometimes,
it gets moved below the last sub-branch, of the last folder, in the current
parent folder (i.e. gets moved to the end of its siblings and put at the
bottom of the last sibling's kids). Other times (and more often) it gets
moved to the very last folder in the entire outline, and placed after the
last child of that folder. Like the very last possible spot.

[MLO] AHK code for multi-step thing

2021-03-16 Thread Steve Kunkel
I've noted there are a few AutoHotkey users on the forum, so I thought I'd
share this bit of code. I've been using it for a while--seems to work
well.

My own custom MLO setup has a parent branch "COMPLETED" where I move
completed cases (child branches) to. Also, I have a context called 'Done'
which is set with Ctrl+Alt+Shift+D. I believe the rest of the below
actions are using the default hotkeys(?)

The below script high jacks Ctrl+Alt+Shift+D and does the steps. It's
'context-sensitive' though and only works if activated when a window
containing "MyLifeOrganized" in the title is active. For this reason, make
sure that TitleMatchMode is set for 2.

#NoEnv ; For security
#SingleInstance force ; If it gets restarted, kill and usurp the old
process in RAM.
#Persistent ; Keep on keeping on.
SetTitleMatchMode, 2 ; Win titles must contain specified string (doesn't
have to be at beginning of title).

#IfWinActive, MyLifeOrganized
!^+d::
send,!^+d ; I have a Context "Done" that is set with Alt+Ctrl+Shift+d
send,!^+r ; "Replaces contexts in all subtasks..." is set with
Alt+Ctrl+Shift+r
WinWaitActive, Confirm ; "Replaces contexts in all subtasks..." results in
a confirmation window.
send,{Enter} ; Closes confirmation window.
send,^m ; Default hotkey for "Move."
WinWaitActive, Move task - select new parent
send,COMPLETED{Down}{Down}{Enter}
Return
#IfWinActive

[MLO] Re: Exporting data for analysis

2021-02-28 Thread Steve Kunkel
Eh... Okay, so when I made this back then, I monitored my exports over the
course of a year or two, to make sure that the format never changed (e.g.
that cell A12 always the top of the table and the columns are always in
exactly the same locations.) That is a must for this type of re-usable
template. I just checked an export from today though, and some columns
have indeed changed. Cell A12 is still the top left, but "Text Tag" was
inserted as column 7. That pushes all the subsequent columns over one.
Sorry. I've run into this problem with other database export templates I
have. It is possible to adjust the spreadsheet, but it is probably easier
to just build a new one from scratch... :- /

also note that "Places" is now "Contexts."

[MLO] Re: Exporting data for analysis

2021-02-28 Thread Steve Kunkel
As I re-read my post, I see more explanation is needed... When I say that
I recommend this setup, I don't mean that you should necessarily use a
table or a gantt chart. I just mean leave your raw export data as raw
data. REFERENCE those cells in other sheets, the use those other sheets
for your data analysis.A person might be tempted to convert their
export directly into an Excel Table. If you do that though, you'd have to
re-build the Table each time you did an export. The setup I have here
allows you to have a "re-usable" template.

also note: The sheet "CulledRows" is merely a "helper sheet" that feeds
into the gantt chart. It was intended to be hidden.

[MLO] Win. Filter recommendation: "ContextsText"

2021-02-11 Thread Steve Kunkel
Hi folks, it's been a while since I posted. I hope we're all surviving the
pandemic is good spirits. I was just doing a filter via the "Setup
Advanced filtering" dialog. One of the options to filter by is
"ContextsText." If I choose "starts with (match case)," then it seems to
only match if the first of multiple contexts starts with the letter.
Should it evaluate every separate context instread?

For example, if my filter is:
*[ContextsText stats with x (match case)]*
and if my tasks have the following contexts:

*Task1: home; xylophone; practice*
*Task2: xylophone; practice*
*Task3: home; practice*

Then MLO seems to only match Task2, but I think it should instead match
Task1 and Task2.

Hope that makes sense. Using MLO5 Pro on Win10.
Take care! -Steve

Re: [MLO] Re: Keeping tasks as notes in MLO is a misuse of this task organiser. Discuss.

2017-10-25 Thread Steve Kunkel
I feel like I already have too many apps that I use continuously through
the day, so for me, keeping my notes in MLOw makes sense. My own system is
that things are mostly Projects or Tasks. Usually a Project (which is also
a "project" in the David Allen sense) will have it's own notes and have
it's own subtasks. A subtask of a project NEVER has it's own notes
though. This is because I might have 100 or more projects in a year, and I
keep them (and their notes) for archival purposes. I cull off the subtasks
when the notes get archived though. Otherwise I'd have thousands and
thousands of untouched MLO branches in my main working outline.

I should point out that I don't really use my notes organizing/planning.
Mostly I just use them to track progress on the project.

[MLO] Re: Import

2016-01-21 Thread Steve Kunkel
I'm not really familiar with XML, but I'll bet that, if OmniFocus can
export to XLS or CSV, then you could get it to work. As Christoph
suggested, do an MLO export to see the structure of the exported Excel
file. Then if you needed to, maybe you could manually select the
individual columns from you Omni export, and paste them to the
corresponding columns in the MLO export. Then re-import.

Also, if OF does let you export as MindmanagerXML, then definitely try
that You probably don't need to have MM installed. Just save the
exported file, and import it right into MLO. (Maybe?)

[MLO] Re: How to hide older completed tasks (Newbie Question)

2015-09-19 Thread Steve Kunkel
Yea, I like this feature. I like to see ones that have been completed
recently so that they won't have to keep nagging the back of my
consciousness; because I'll see that they're done. Also it gives me a
sense of accomplishment. At the same time though, I don't want them

[MLO] MLO on Windows Tablets?

2015-06-11 Thread Steve Kunkel
I know this is somewhat off-topic, but I'm considering getting a Windows
Tablet. Maybe a Surface or something I don't know. Is anyone using MLO on
a WinTablet? How is your experience? Any pitfalls I should avoid?
There's quite a price range for the tablets... Like anything from 70 USD
to 1,800 USD! Based on Amazon reviews it looks like the Windows RT
devices can NOT install third-party apps, but instead can only install apps
from the Windows Store. Also, most of the reasonably priced ones have
only 1Gig of RAM. Is that enough to run MLO, as well as having Outlook
open? Also, can I use my Windows copy of MLO, or am I looking at another
purchase?

My current device is a Kindle Fire HD 7. I'll probably x-post this on a
couple different forums. Thanks All.

[MLO] Re: Your advice on using MLO without calendar and reference material capabilities.

2015-06-05 Thread Steve Kunkel
I guess I'm sort'a glad that MLO doesn't try to do a calendar. My calendar
is Pimlical (from the GorillaHaven guy that did the old DateBk5 app for
Palm). It has an incredibly rich feature set (including letting me use my
old DateBk5 icon set, LOL). Annoyingly though, Pimlical is a Java app so
it doesn't integrate well with other Windows apps. If MLO *was *able to
read/write the calendar database, then that would be awesome! That
wouldn't be that same as MLO having a calendar view though. If MLO did
have a calendar view, I'd be tempted to use it, then I'd miss out on the
Pimlical features I like. Or I'd just not use the MLO calendar -- that
would make me bummed that I'm not utilizing MLO to it's maximum potential.
Or, even worse, I'd try to run both calendars. Then I'd have two
different calendars -- A Dave Alan no-no.

Having said all that; I do have to admin that some integration with Outlook
and/or Google Calendars would probably be a smart feature for Andrey and
the MLO crew to add. My own take on this, is that the way to go, would be
to have the MLO flat lists and hierarchies (like it already does), but it
would read the OL/gCal databases and embed the calendar items in with the
other items. If the item is altered in MLO, then the changes *MUST *show
up in OL/gCal. And vise-versa, of course.

Insert type blah blah Enter, then Shift+Alt+UpArrow...

As a side note, my MLO prefs indicate that Ctrl+Alt+M is the key for manual

for flipping my screen display 180 degrees. LOL.

Also side note: Did you used to use Natara Bonsai? I think it might have

[MLO] Re: Save the newbie - advise the best productivity books

2015-06-01 Thread Steve Kunkel
I guess I'll add
http://www.amazon.com/How-Productivity-Ninja-Worry-Achieve/dp/1848316836
to the good books list.

In many ways the productivity ninja approach is similar to Allen's GTD.
I think Allcot does a better job of tackling email overload though. Also
he puts a big emphasis on working with your own natural energy levels.
When energy levels are high, go into planning mode. When energy levels
are low, go into no-brainer production mode. Also there are exercises at
the end of each chapter, which is nice.

Re the Kindle version: You can get a free preview sampler which is the
first part of the book.

[MLO] Re: BUG! Rapd task entry closes without confirmation when shutting down PC

2015-06-01 Thread Steve Kunkel

Hmmm... Yes also confirmed here on Win 7. If you close the MLO app, then
anything left in the RTE window is lost.

It seems like it would be good to have preference Options in the RTE area
to either
[ ] Commit contents on exit.
[ ] Save RTE contents on exit. (And put them back in the window when it's
opened next.)
Probably there will be a small performance hit.

Somewhat related:
While checking this, I also noticed that the keyboard shortcut for the
Rapid Task Entry tool does not show in the menu, like other shortcuts do...

I'm not sure that either of these is a bug per se. They are things that
Andrey can maybe add to the todo list though.  :-}

Yea, it does sound like an interesting idea. Another similar thing that
might be simpler to write code for... When in help me rank mode just
start clicking the different tasks one at a time, starting from most urgent

sure that this feature would be compatible with the machine ranking that
MLO does... You'd have to use one or the other.

[MLO] Re: Useful Icons and exported filters and auto-formatting for MLO

2015-02-19 Thread Steve Kunkel
Hey Steph! Yep small world :-)

I hadn't even made the connection, but sure enough, your GTD Set is in the
main library folder I posted to the IconMgr site. It does look like the
site is still open, by the way. Though it doesn't get used for much
anymore. And yes, I do miss Bonsai :- ( The way that the Windows and Palm
version mirrored each other is something that I've not seen in any other
software--Android or otherwise.

Anyway... Here are some more icons.
https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=25D1CAA152E3CBA1!65696authkey=!AHXFTeUdswLCLBsithint=file%2czip
(it's the one called *FatCow Redistributed.zip*)
These are NOT created by me. They are the FatCow set from here.
http://www.fatcow.com/free-icons
You can read on their site that the icons are okay to share, etc.

The icon images are not altered. They are offered on the site as 16x16 and
32x32. They are nice because the 16x ones are not shrunk down versions
of the 32x ones--they are separate images and look really sharp! I wanted
to have some 24x ones, so I resized the 32x ones. Unfortunately, it gave
them that supersampled blurry look blah. So I'd recommend (in MLO) to
use either the 16x or the 32x. The set is HUGE. Nearly 4000 different
images. So I'd recommend NOT trying to import them all into MLO!
Anyway, they are really designed for developers to use, so there are lots
of toolbar-like images and file-type images. Also there are a few hundred
different flags. There are also lots that will be useful for MLO outlines
though!

The above-linked zip was too big to upload here (33.3 MB), so you'll have
to get it from my shared OneDrive space.
Inside of it there are 4 zipped subfolders. They are the complete set as
16x, 24x, 32x, and a multi-size one that combines all three. The
combined ones are not needed for MLO, but will be nice if people like to
customize their Windows folder icons, etc. The single-sized ones are
renamed with the pixel size appended, like some_icon-16.ico, so you can
put low and high versions of the same image in MLO and still tel them
apart.
 -that's all.

Yea, it's a bit dated. I think he has another book or two out, but I
haven't ready them. In retrospect, I guess one reason that this book had a
big impact on me was because it was one of the first time-management books

it. I do have to say though, that the wisdom in it is still valid. The 10

[MLO] Workspace syncing to pinned tab...

2015-02-03 Thread Steve Kunkel
Hi All,
I have two workspaces, Outline and To-Dos, and I like the ability to double
click an item in To-Do and jump to the project in my Outline. (see image)

Unfortunately, since I pinned a couple of workspaces (i.e. the apple,
phone, and calendar), MLO is jumping to those, rather than the main
outline. It jumps to whichever one is at the far left... Does that make
sense? Can I tell it to jump to the Outline instead?

I have to agree, as one user stated, we purchased v1. We didn't
pre-purchase v2 with a guaranteed release date. Still, a year is a long
time for people to wait. In the software game, a year is a lifetime.
Anyhoo... MLO-A is nowhere near MLO-W, but it is still the best thing out
there, IMHO. My need is to do the bulk of my work on the desktop, but
carry my notes and todos on my Kindle Fire HD, and sync the two. Given
those needs, my current MLO setup is superior to any I've tried (I mean
since I had to give up on Palm and Bonsai [RIP] ).

[MLO] Nesting vs. Dependencies vs. Complete in order....

2015-01-23 Thread Steve Kunkel
Hi All,
I have a question about how best to feed the subtasks of a project into
my Next Actions list...
The scenario is that I'm a school psychologist and this is my setup for
completing educational reevaluations for special needs kids.
I can almost use the Complete subtasks in order option that is in
Properties General. But the problem is that not ALL of the subtasks need
to be competed in order.
see image:

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-ONcds7lSG-w/VMF0lhAEdHI/AYM/ovLWcYSGpds/s1600/Screenshot%2B-%2B1_22_2015%2B%2C%2B2_06_57%2BPM.png
The first Sample Student uses a hierarchy to feed the sequential parts.
As you can see, email teachers and record review can be done at any
time but testing and report-writing can't happen until parent is contacted,
etc.

The annoying part about the nesting example is that the nested items are
sortof in reverse order That is, call parent is the very first thing
to do, but it is at the bottom... Also, maybe there will be other
unforeseen disadvantages of having dozens of multi-level nests in my
outline(?). In that regard, the bottom Sample Student is better because
the tasks are all children of the Student project, and because the items
are shown in logical order in the outline view. The problem with the
dependency setup is that I'm affraid that if I need to add other tasks in
there (e.g. observe student in class) or take some out, then it might
disrupt the chain of dependencies, and there really no visual indication
of what item is dependent on what...

Hence the dilemma.. Which technique to use ... Which would you guys use?
Are there any unforeseen factors that might throw me a curve ball later??
Thanks in advance, for any tips. :)

[MLO] Re: Save the newbie - advise the best productivity books

2015-01-23 Thread Steve Kunkel

 Hi Marina!

I'm a newbie too here at MLO, but I've been a student of time-management
for a long time.

The biggest game-changing book for me was *10 Natural Laws of Successful
Time and Life Management* by Hyrum Smith.

After that I read* 7 Habits of Highly Successful People* by Steven Covey.
I had seen 7 Habits in books stores for years, but had avoided it. It was
so popular that I expected it to be a bunch of superficial pop-psychology
junk. But in fact it is an excellent book. I highly recommend it...to
everyone!
I think that Smith and Covey actually are religious folks, and that is
often a turn-off for me, but they both do a really good job about keeping
that out of their books. Really there's no church content at all and
they're not preachy.

*Time-Management form the Inside-Out* (Julia Morgenstern) is decent. Not a
game changer but worth reading.

And, obviously, folks need to read *Getting Things Done* by David Allen.

Smith and Covey help us focus on things that are wholistically important,
for lack of a better term--but Allen gives us real world nuts and bolt
tools that will make or break us.
Side Note: There is going to be a 2015 edition of David Allen's book...
You can pre-order the Kindle edition on Amazon... I'm not sure about the
paper version though.

[MLO] Re: How can I paste text in UPPERCASE ?

2015-01-23 Thread Steve Kunkel
There's a cool little utility called* Dolphin Text Editor Menu*. Free and
seems to be bug/junk free. I had in running in the background for a couple
months... Never had problems with it, but also never used it very often,
so I stopped having it stay running in the background all the time. Uses
about 28 MB of RAM running in the background, so it's not too much of a
resource hog.

Anyhow, I just tried it on a new MLO task, and it seems to work fine. (see
image below).

[MLO] Re: Feature Request: We need a 'Forced' Next Action to allow more than one Next Action per large project

2015-01-23 Thread Steve Kunkel
This sounds like the same topic as a posted yesterday
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/mylifeorganized/q72R-R5RR7I

MLO have several different option for this, which is nice. Seems like it
would be good if your could group several sibling tasks, then have the
items of each group fed to the NA list one at a time... (Maybe?)

[MLO] Remove Contexts from this Outline?

2015-01-17 Thread Steve Kunkel
Hi All, Total MLO n00b here...
I started putting my case files into an outline and then found a ton of
@Contexts that I don't plan to use.
I think I must've accidently started with a GTD template rather than a
blank outline (?)
Is it possible to cull the list of contexts so that it only includes the
ones I put in there?
Either globally or just this outline is fine. Also, I use Win 7 and
Android on KindleFHD, wifi syncing, if that matters.
Thanks All.
