Re: [MLO] Re: MyLifeOrganized v.4 PUBLIC Release Candidate

2013-01-31 Thread Sumit Chugh
Hi Dwight,

Thanks for your suggestions. I have posted the idea on
http://mlo.uservoice.com.

Regarding using contexts to represent both purpose as well as person may
lead to too many contexts to use in my opinion.

But i believe there is already an idea to assign tasks so that should help.

RE: [MLO] Re: MyLifeOrganized v.4 PUBLIC Release Candidate

2013-01-22 Thread mlo
Hi, Sumit.

Posts to the user forum, like this one, are a lot more likely to get a
response from another user (like me) than from the developers, although the
developers do read this forum and respond every once in a while.

First, I wanted to make sure that you are aware of the easy control on
sorting and grouping that's currently available. Make sure that MLO's left
panel is showing the details of your current view. If it's showing the list
of all views, please click once on the title "Views" to bring up the details
of your view. The view details are shown in expandable sections, and near
the bottom is one called "Group & Sort". If the section is collapsed, click
on the header to expand it, then click on the "sort" button to bring up a
sort selection window.

Second, I agree that clicking on a column header to sort by that column
would contribute to ease of use. But requests like that made in this forum
(especially for areas of the program that are not already opened by
developers for enhancements) do not have much track record of getting
implemented. What works best is to use this forum to kick the idea around
and see if anyone can suggest improvements to your idea, and then post it as
a proposal at http://mlo.uservoice.com - if it gets a lot of votes it has a
better chance of getting implemented.

I would suggest creating a context name for each person you assign tasks to,
and assigning it to the task along with any other contexts it already has.
It's easy to create a task with multiple contexts, like @Waiting; +Joe.
Another idea (if you are not using the mobile versions) would be to create a
flag for each recipient and then apply the flags to the tasks.

Hi Andrey,

Let me tell congratulate you for the wonderful product you have created. I
shortlisted after testing a number of other products.

I have just started using the v4 and as of now only have two requests -

1. Please make the list sort-able by clicking on any header. E.g. if i click
on "context" header, I have my tasks (and sub-tasks) sorted in alphabetical
order. This really helps in picking all the tasks related to one context at
one go. I am sure this must be doable by multiple views but sorting by
headers makes it really easier.

2. Can we have a column like "Context" where we can have "assignee" so that
we can see the tasks which we have assigned to someone. Better way would be,
if we can define some of the fields

Thanks

2013-01-22 Thread The Kid
Same for me. This is disappointing. When your outline is big, you have to
frickin scroll. It also does something similar when you pass from show
completed task no to yes. The view is moving and i loose track of where i
was. The focus is also wrong when i create a new task using template. I
can't use arrows to select and modify tasks. I have to re-click on the
task. Also the key shotcut Alt+e for hiding a task is not working if your
focus is not on the property pane. That should be corrected.

MLO 4 works more or less fine. Having much sync conflicts with MS Outlook
tasks:
- Difference details: UDF:
MLOPriority(1,51722239467592->1,51548042754628) --> I guess, first three
digits could be enough in comparison...
- tasks are changed after sync Outlook <-> Google (using gSyncit --> need
that for my phone) --> all tasks and MLO todo's are doubled as **!Sync
conflict (MLO)!**
Any idea?

[MLO] Re: MyLifeOrganized v.4 PUBLIC Release Candidate

2013-01-05 Thread juwlz
Thanks Richard

I'm new to MLO, and was also wondering how the Home / Work and other tabs
on the screenshot in the blog might have been set up. Although MLO appears
to have all the features I need, some of them are more difficult to access
than I would like (especially as my preference is to use the keyboard and
not the mouse when using a PC, and, wherever possible to fully-specify all
the attributes I want (position in hierarchy, due date, recurrence,
contexts, reminders, etc.)

I currently have several different areas (of my life) set up as a
hierarchy, and I use custom formatting to colour code them according to
area. I've also considered using contexts for them, and haven't decided
which method would work best for me. (I have 5 areas: Personal, Home, and
three other "Work" areas (my main day job, a part-time job and a voluntary
job.)

I haven't yet worked out what's the most streamlined way to enter new tasks
in a particular area, and/or allocate tasks in the Inbox that were entered
in a hurry (often in the Android app) to their proper area, both in the
Windows app and the Android app. One of the disadvantages of using
categories is that it makes for a very long list or categories once "real"
ones are included, and the Android app requires me to scroll and pick,
rather than filtering for matching categories as I type, which would be
much quicker. This disadvantage of using the hierarchy is that it seems to
be quite fiddly to put / move things in the right place in both apps. I
often end up having to do it twice because things don't end up where I
expect them to (although I admint that at least part of the problem is lack
of familiarity).

What would be nice is to be able to quickly get to the right view
(preferably with a keyboard shortcut), and have have MLO automatically
include the "rules" for that view as part of the default information for
any new task. So if I have a view that is a Zoom of my Home area, adding a
new task in that tab would automatically nest it immediately under my Home
folder. Or, if I use a category, a tab with a filter for that category
would automatically give that category to any new task added when adding a
task to that tab.

Obviously flags aren't an option (until they're included in the Android
app, at least), but you hinted that there might be other ways to separate
out areas, so I'd be interested to hear what they might be, and any
comments you (or anybody else) may have on streamlining data entry using
the various methods available.

something I use all the time.

Thanks for the excellent efforts here Andrey. I live by MLO!

[MLO] Re: MyLifeOrganized v.4 PUBLIC Release Candidate

2012-12-28 Thread Tommy Hewitt

The reason why it does not work is simply that MLO does not support
CRAM-MD5 authentication via SASL (which is the only method currently
allowed in my Postfix).
When I allow PLAIN auth, everything is okay. I think you should support
this mechanism, because it's pretty common and PLAIN or LOGIN are insecure
over non-encrypted connections.

Your custom to-do filters should be in the tree toward the bottom. You can
rearrange where they are.

I completely agree about returning Indent and Outdent. On my small laptop
there is plenty of space for them! But -- they do have keyboard shortcuts,
if you can remember them

For full isolation you should create new data file. The tabs just help you
to see the info (or part of it) from the same file in different ways and
switch between these views very quickly.

Does it work with the same setup in MO 3.6.x?
What SMTP server you are using?
What error you see?
Any additional info you can provide?

We did not change this part from MLO 3.6 so I wonder what is the reason of
the issue. It works fine for me in MLO 4.

Please respond on our support email.

Thanks!

Re: [MLO] Re: MyLifeOrganized v.4 PUBLIC Release Candidate

2012-12-26 Thread Richard C
The bit I missed from my proposed solution (which has been discussed in the
beta forum) is that it should be more difficult to delete a tab - if I am
using tabs to hold temporary views that I have set up, then I don't want to
lose that tab and at the moment, it is too easy to delete a tab (my
preference: make it a right click option because I find I only occasionally
delete tabs).

[MLO] Re: MyLifeOrganized v.4 PUBLIC Release Candidate

2012-12-26 Thread Richard C
It depends on how you have organised your tasks. As with most things
relating to MLO, there are many ways of doing this but two simple
possibilites are:

   1. Use the hierarchy and zoom: if all your work tasks are in one part of
the hierarchy (under 'Work' parent?) and all your home tasks are in a
different part of the hierarchy, you can create two different tabs and in
one use Zoom to select all the tasks under the 'Work' parent; and in the
other tab, use Zoom to select the tasks under the 'Home' parent
   2. Use Contexts: if your Home and Work tasks are scattered throughout
the hierarchy, you can assign the contexts @Work and @Home to each
category of tasks, and then create two tabs and within one tab, use the
Filter to select just those tasks with the @Work tasks and in the other to
select the tasks with the @Home context.

Do either of these work for you?

[MLO] Re: MyLifeOrganized v.4 PUBLIC Release Candidate

2012-12-25 Thread tbGroupster
Andrey... This is great, what a nice Christmas surprise! I love the tabs
and it works well with how I refine my task list from the outline, to
actionable tasks, starred tasks for what I want to do and finally a view
sorted by flag that orders things in which I will execute. (I have some
custom flag icons I've imported that are numbered). I use a couple of
more tabs for frequently accessed contexts for Errands, People and Computer
tasks which eliminate all the different views I used to manage. The tab
feature alone has made a huge improvement on usability.

The best thing about the outline filtering is being able to exclude all
those future recurring tasks that clutter up the review process.

Great upgrade and I've been using it solid without issue for a good day so
far.

A remaining bug from the old version is not being able to right click on a
date field, choose calendar, pick a day and have it stick. The other
options tend to work fine.

Would like to see a basic rich text option for the 'notes' field for basic
formatting of bold, underlining and bulleted text someday.

I wonder why this isn't an option for all methods? It could be implemented
trivially for things like File synchronization; simply have it perform the
sync every time the file gets saved. It's a per-method option, so if for
whatever reason the sync process annoyed the user for checking the network
share (if syncing to a network file) each save got annoying it would be
easy to turn off.

You can have more than two templates; the help text for 3.x says to save
them in to the Reports folder. It doesn't theme as-is, it just has a
different set of data that it runs. If you want to do a full XSLT
transform, can you not do that with File|Export|XML?

Also, 4.x seems to quirk out with DPI scaling turned on (as it is in my OEM
install of Windows): http://i.imgur.com/57T0m.png

[MLO] Re: MyLifeOrganized v.4 PUBLIC Release Candidate

2012-12-24 Thread fugosushi

Hi Andrey, thank you so much for all your hard work bring us the newest and
greatest MLO!
I have a few issues that I've documented, hopefully you can take a look at
them. However, there is still an issue that is in version 4 that was also
in version 3.6 that I was hoping you would address but still haven't.

* Major Issue (THE single reason why I haven't purchase a license yet. If
you can fix this, I will immediately send you $60):*
1) Editing task properties from the outline/task list is somewhat confusing
and inconsistently implemented.
* A) There are fields that currently are not editable (either with a
context menu or in-cell) but SHOULD be. For example, Project Status. I
can't right-click to edit this. Unfortunately, this alone is a deal-breaker
for me.*
B) The program gives you cues as to which fields are editable by
changing the cell to yellow on hover, but sadly this is inconsistent:
Right-clicking on the Due Date column gives you options to change the date,
but left-clicking on the Due Date column brings up the Task Recurrence
dialog box (though I'm not quite sure why exactly), and yet left or
right-clicking on the Task Recurrence column does nothing.
C) Users should be able to edit as many things as possible in the
outline/task list (through right-clicking context menu or opening a dialog
box, or even better: In-cell the way Outlook edits lists) WITHOUT opening
the task properties panel. Columns that users should be able to edit in the
list:
* Lead Time
* Reminder Time
* Time Required Min & Max
* Recurrence
* Project Status
* Next Review
* Review Every
D) Also, if a task is NOT a project, its Project Status in the
outline/task list shouldn't say Not Started, it should be blank instead.
However, right-clicking to change this should automatically mark that task
as a project. (Right now every new task by default says "Not Started" in
the Project Status column, which is confusing.)

* Issues:*
2) Changing the Tree Icon Size affects only the padding of the table cells,
the icons don't get any larger than 16 px. (Similarly the Views Icon Size
doesn't get larger than 24 px, only a slight increase in padding between
icons)
3) Can we please make the color codes standard hex format? (this way we can
copy and paste hex colors from HTML or Photoshop for example)
4 ) Could we make it so that in addition to right-clicking and pressing the
insert key, you can also double-click on any empty space of the list to
create a new task?
5) Can we put a "Hide Task Views Pane" button next to the "Show/Hide Filter
For Current View" toggle button (similarly to how there is a "Hide Task
Properties Pane" button)
6) When you double-click a task to edit it in fullscreen mode, the "Hide
Task Properties to Edit Notes" & "Hide Task Properties Pane" buttons are
not available, so this makes closing the Task Properties Pane impossible
without using a keyboard shortcut or exiting Fullscreen mode. (Can we make
these buttons visible when the Task Properties Pane is open in fullscreen
mode?)
7) The Automatical Formatting Rules are strange. Can we please have human
interpretable conditions like "now - 15 min" rather than "now -
0.010417" (This is like asking someone if they have the time and they
give me their response as a UNIX timestamp :)
8) Personally, I find the form elements (text fields, date boxes, etc.)
that don't have a border around them until you hover over them distracting
and less usable. I do appreciate the cleaner style, but what if you took
another cue from Google and made the form fields and text boxes like the
Google search box. (To see what I mean, look at the Google home page in
Chrome. Notice that the search box border is visible and light grey, hover
over and it gets slightly darker grey, but focus into it and it become
blue. This in my mind is both very pleasing as well as highly usable.)
9) Compared to MLO 3.6, version 4 is noticably more sluggish when it comes
to redrawing the screen, particularly when scrolling the task properties
panel {see screenshot}

10) When I'm looking at a task's properties and I select "This is a
project", both the Min and Max Time Required fields become available and I
can focus into them, but I can't enter anything.

* Minor Quibbles:*
11) The MLO tree icon in the rapid task entry box (upper right corner)
looks rather crummy (it's showing black where the transparency should be)
12) Would it be possible to have timing options for the Desktop Alert?
(like a preference for the fade speed in ms, as well as the hold duration
in ms)
13) Would it be possible to make the Desktop alerts a little easier to
read, perhaps larger and bold font? Even including the first X number of
characters of the task note. (You don't need to give us customization of
this

Hi Lisa,

Thanks for that elaboration. Indeed, when you explain it like that,
sync'ing to first tab makes sense for some tabs but not for others.

I do hope to get an update from Andrej regarding the auto-updating!

Best,
Paul

Whilst the Public beta is a considerable improvement over earlier priviate
betas in avoiding accidental changes to the view associated with a
workspace, the simply 'I forgot to switch tabs before changing view'
possibility remains and I have certainly done this.

For me, a better option than locking a view to a tab is being able to set a
view/zoom combination as the default for a tab with the option (associated
with a hotkey) to restore that default view at any time.

The reason for this is that I do sometimes want to change a view normally
associated with a particular tab - in particular to switch to the To Do view
to see where a particular task is appearing in the view and then switch back
again to my original view.

The default mechanism I have described will a) allow me to do this quickly
without having to dismiss a warning; and b) (and more importantly) allows me
to set up a custom view on a particular workspace (eg filtering by a
particular contex) without needing to create a new named view and then 'save
it' as the default view for that tab and c) allows me to to get back to my
custom view (including zooms) with a single keystroke.

[MLO] Re: MyLifeOrganized v.4 PUBLIC Release Candidate

2012-12-22 Thread Gleep
I got it, and I really like it. An excellent update. MLO's pre-eminence
as the best personal task organizer on a desktop is assured for a while
longer. You have successfully added powerful and useful new functionality
without contributing to feature bloat or gui self-indulgences. One thing is
for sure - Remember the Milk and others like it may do some things MLO
can't - but good luck building a webapp with this much powerful, simple
utility and elegance in .NET, Flash or HTML5. And the auto-syncing...
thank you! It is perfect.

My wish list for version 5:

1. Custom fields, so we can handle any organizing system someone might
dream up (imagine infinite user defined custom fields in 6 types - integer,
list of values, date, container, relationship and freeform rich text. )
2. Rapid text entry parsing on mobile devices. (Blackberry first please
yes, I know they would have to be nuts to do Blackberry before Android, but
I want it and it is my post).
3. A supported XSL transforms interface so we can have more than two
templates for printing and reporting.
4. Attachments.

You thought I was going to say calendar, didn't you! No, I don't support
the calendar-philes or the web-app-o-philes.

Overall review of MLO 4 - Five out of Five Stars! As a user since V1, this
is one of the best updates yet.

Re: [MLO] Re: MyLifeOrganized v.4 PUBLIC Release Candidate

2012-12-21 Thread Lisa Stroyan
Good question on the auto-updating of the todo views. Not sure on that. The
sync selection and sync zoom keep the 1st tab and that tab in sync. So, if
you have tab 1 as "all tasks" and tab 2 "todo list" you can double click to
see the task (goes back and forth). But if you have a tab set to, say, some
temporary use, you might not want your selected task to change while you
are using that view, so it would not be synced. Or, you may sync a set of
tabs to zoom into work tasks. Other tabs can show the whole tree.

2012-12-21 Thread Paul Lemmens
Great work! Looks nice although (indeed) a little rough here and there on a
few visual edges. Especially popping up the filter pane looks a bit old
fashioned compared to the remainder of the product.

I have two questions that I couldn't find an answer to in this group:
1) I cannot find a button to disable auto-updating in the To do view
2) What do the toggles for sync with first tab do?

Best regards,
Paul
