The workbench GUI came up with: ALTER TABLE `rome_aggregator`.`links` ADD INDEX `fk_links_1_idx` (`feed_id` ASC); In general, an index is used for performance, while a constraint is used for logical concepts, like uniqueness. Most often, the DBMS uses an index to implement these logical concepts, but it's better to understand the difference. A foreign key needs a unique constraint (either a primary of a secondary unique constraint) to point to: when there's no uniqueness in the parent table, it cannot point to a record in that table. Hello Jan, list, From: Martijn Tonies (Upscene Productions) m.ton...@upscene.com Database Workbench now comes in multiple editions with different pricing models, there's always a version that suits you! Unless you don't do Winblows. Please put Windows dependency clearly in your announcements and on your website. I couldn't find it anywhere, until I attempted a download, and got a useless .EXE file. Hello Larry, Subject: Stored procedure debuggers Does anyone know of any debuggers for stored procs that run on Mac and/or Linux? Although all our tools are Windows tool, we have customers running Database Workbench under Wine without major problems. Re: ANN: Hopper (stored procedure debugger), version 1.0.1 released
Hello Jan, others, I do find your juvenile comments about worshipping, changing product names etc just that. Ah, you must be from the marketing department -- always willing to make friends and influence people. Please, Jan, I'm obviously not, I'm but a simple programmer. And given the fact that you started out by implying I worshipped Bill Gates, I'll take it you aren't willing to make new friends either. Website has been modified, product announcement as well. Re: ANN: Hopper (stored procedure debugger), version 1.0.1 released
Hello Jan, Can you PLEASE note in your listing when a product is Microsloth-only? While you're at it, can you PLEASE note it prominently on your website? I looked through your product description and saw no specific requirements beyond what databases were supported. It wasn't until I tried to download it that I noticed the warning sign. (.EXE in the file name) Hard as it is to believe, the entire world does not worship at the alter of Bill Gates. We don't allow any Microsloth products on our site. Although you have a point about the product announcement and lack of mentioning the required OS on our website, I do find your juvenile comments about worshipping, changing product names etc just that. I'll adjust the website and announcements. :) Have a nice weekend. Re: Database Workbench 4.2.3, the multi-DBMS IDE now available!
Hello Daevid, Any plans to add sqlite to your list of supported DBs there? I develop Android and use LAMP as the server backend. Currently I use SQLYog as I have for like 10 years. But I would really like one GUI to work on both the android sqlite and the mysql backend since they usually tie together. Full native SQLite is not planned. You probably can access it as a read only datasource, run queries etc, via ODBC, I haven't tested that. Stored Procedure Debugging?
Hi all, As you probably now, we created Database Workbench, a developer tool for MySQL and other DBMSses. This tool includes a Stored Routine Debugger for several DBMSses, including Firebird and InterBase, but not MySQL. Both Firebird and InterBase do not provide a debugging API, so our tool emulates stored code behaviour at the client side. As far as I know, MySQL doesn't have a debugging interface either. I'm wondering if there would be a market to add such emulation to Database Workbench. For info and screenshots, see: http://upscene.com/documentation/dbw4/tools_debugger_basics.htm Would you like to be able to debug stored routines like this? Re: ANN: Database Workbench 4.1.3, the multi-DBMS IDE now available!
Hi all, No SQLite support? http://www.sqlite.org/ Seems curious you wouldn't have this yet, especially given its popularity on both embedded systems and Android to say the least. Indeed, no native SQLite support. Lots of other systems are popular and not supported. The reason for this is that the tool is not generic and tries to get the most of all. Apparently Winblows-only. It sure would be nice if people would note platform requirements in their announcement, rather than forcing people to dig through their websites for such info. I guess I should know better; if it doesn't list platform requirements, the developer hasn't thought beyond the dominant paradigm. You sure have a point, I'll list it in the future. However, I should note that Database Workbench users have succesfully used it under Wine. Re: Any table visualization tools with wires connecting the actual columns?
Hi, Also take a look at Database Workbench - www.upscene.com The free Lite Edition doesn't do diagramming, but the Pro does. With regards, Martijn Tonies Upscene Productions http://www.upscene.com Download Database Workbench for Oracle, MS SQL Server, Sybase SQL Anywhere, MySQL, InterBase, NexusDB and Firebird! Does anyone have any suggestions on this? I've written to SQL Maestro twice and they've not replied either. From: Daevid Vincent [mailto:dae...@daevid.com] Sent: Friday, April 01, 2011 4:27 PM To: mysql@lists.mysql.com Subject: Any table visualization tools with wires connecting the actual columns? I am evaluating various tools for diagram generating of existing databases on some smaller databases (9 tables or so) first. The two I've tried so far are these: http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/workbench/ http://www.sqlmaestro.com/download/#mysql Both _seem_ robust and cosmetically polished, but feel to me lacking the most obvious and key component of the whole purpose to make an EER diagram. I don't understand in workbench, why it creates new keys for me on existing tables. Maestro doesn't do this nonsense. It isn't the tools business where I have keys, it only needs to be concerned with what links to what -- that I tell it to. It's further exacerbated by the fact that the documentation indicates these aren't even REAL keys, they are cosmetic only! WTF? Why add confusion guys? 1. Neither one seem to be smart enough to automatically know that columns of the same name should be linked, and furthermore they should be linked from all tables to the one where that column name is the PK. my tables don't have true InnoDB FKs setup. And some tables are MYISAM (as they're significantly faster). But I do use keys and I do have sane naming conventions, so I don't understand why they can't use the names, and if there are multiple tables (for some unlikely reason) then just prompt me which table to use. Which leads me to the second and third problems... So I manually have started to draw the connections, but: 2. How can I make the wires stick to a column on the left or right edge, so that I can have a direct visual link between the columns. Right now, it seems they float around the edge of the table box. That's sort of useless isn't it? it's like saying, well, something in this table points to something in that table.?! I would think that two programs with such high version numbers would have this feature. Maybe I'm missing a configuration or some way I'm supposed to do it? 3. Some of my databases point to tables in other databases on the same server. It would be useful if I could make a wire that indicates this. Are there other (better) options out there for this? I really don't want to do this in Visio or make a printout of the table boxes and tape string to my walls to visualize all the databases, tables and columns. -Daevid. _ No virus found in this message. Re: Which row in which table has been accessed at which time?
Hi, I could envision a way of doing this when accessing your tables only via Stored Procedures instead of using them directly. With regards, Martijn Tonies Upscene Productions http://www.upscene.com Download Database Workbench for Oracle, MS SQL Server, Sybase SQL Anywhere, MySQL, InterBase, NexusDB and Firebird! Hi listers I have a mysql web application. in this application it would be fine to be able to track the database entries i have visited, because often later on i grat my head: which entry did i see this already in? So i would need a way to find out which entries in which table i have visited lately. i first created a last_access table column and updated it before selecting the table entry, but alas, this way i also updated the last_update entry of the table which has on update current_timestamp. it can't be done this way. i also looked for an on select event in mysql, but i was not sucessful. also, the show status command was not helpful. the complicated way would be to create a special table and make entries into it whenever i access entries in different tables. when googling around i found, it is even not easy to find out, which tables have been accessed in general. if, now, i want to know even which row in a particular table has been accessed at which time, the problem gets even more difficult. does anybody have a solution to this, which is easier than the complicated way mentionned earlier? thanks for any hints. suomi -- MySQL General Mailing List For list archives: http://lists.mysql.com/mysql To unsubscribe:http://lists.mysql.com/mysql?unsub=m.ton...@upscene.com -- MySQL General Mailing List For list archives: http://lists.mysql.com/mysql To unsubscribe:http://lists.mysql.com/mysql?unsub=arch...@jab.org

Re: Triggers and FOR EACH ROW
Manao ahoana, Hello, Bonjour, I just read several documentation on MySQL triggers. The way to create triggers is: CREATE TRIGGER t21_au BEFORE UPDATE ON t22 FOR EACH ROW BEGIN // ... END; The trigger I want is only on UPDATE. Is FOR EACH ROW referring to each existing row in the table, or to each UPDATEd row? Each updated row, as per documentation: It can be BEFORE or AFTER to indicate that the trigger activates before or after each row to be modified. Re: Mysql Schema design Rollback necessity Question
Hi, I am new to using mysql. I want to prepare an application for my employer. The application will be accessed by staff from as many as 10 different departments such as sales, marketing, admin, finance etc. The users will be using DML commands on the tables. My question has two parts: Part I: While designing the schema of the database, I have two choices: Scenarios: 1. Create multiple tables, one for each department. The relationship for most of the tables is one-to-one. 2. Create one master table so that each department updates its respective columns in the same table. Please advise which choice is better. I fail to see what kind of data a table (one for each department) would hold? How would a single table (one master table) hold the data for the processes of this application? What should the application do? Questions: 1. With single table will table locking become an issue if multiple users edit the table simultaneously or is it something that mysql can handle without problem? It depends on the storage engine. 2. What is the maximum recommended size of a table for mysql? How many columns should be master table should have ? Is it recommended to design a master table having more than 200 columns? Have you ever read a book on database design normalization? PART II: Secondly, I am using PHP, Mysql, ADODB, APACHE on windows 7 platform. This is my typical DML command: I am not using any rollback statement to rollback the db if the DML command is not completed successfully. Is it advisable to use rollback? If it is how should I modify the above statement to include it ? If the DML command failed and modifies a single row only, the rollback won't do anything, but if it updates multiple rows or trying to do a unit of work inside the same transaction, things become different. Have you ever read about atomicy on database transactions? Re: order by numeric value
But I'd prefer not to see the extra sorting field. You don't need to select a field in order to be able to order by it. So select chart_of_accounts.accountname as Account, concat('$',format(coalesce(sum(sales_journal_entries.debit),0),2)) as Debit, concat('$',format(coalesce(sum(sales_journal_entries.credit),0),2)) as Credit, concat('$',format(coalesce(sum(sales_journal_entries.credit),0)-coalesce(sum(sales_journal_entries.debit),0),2)) as Balance from sales_journal_entries left join sales_journal on sales_journal.journalID=sales_journal_entries.journalID left join chart_of_accounts on chart_of_accounts.accountID=sales_journal_entries.accountID where sales_journal.date '2008-12-31' and sales_journal.date '2010-01-01' group by sales_journal_entries.accountID order by coalesce(sum(sales_journal_entries.credit),0)-coalesce(sum(sales_journal_entries.debit),0) asc; should do the trick. Jesper Perfectamundo! I thought there would have been a more elegant way but this works just fine. Thanks. There is a more elegant way: do not do your $ at the database, but rather in the presentation layer.
