[mythtv-users] Front end choice: Mac Mini versus VIA EPIA. Mac OS X remote control?

2005-08-31 Thread Andrew Morley

I'm at an awkward stage with Myth.

My back end is pretty much complete and works a treat. I bought the
slowest second-hand P4 machine that the local second-hand computer
shop ( - it's a great place) could
sell me, installed Gentoo, two Hauppauge Nova-T cards and Myth and
everything worked pretty easily. Kudos to the developers, the Gentoo
ebuild maintainers and the many HOWTO authors. It records stuff
reliably and dishes out the video to either a front end running on
the same machine (in the study) or to my PowerBook plugged in via
100-baseT. It doesn't work too well wirelessly, but that's no
surprise.

So, now the difficult bit. The back end will be hidden away (in the
attic, probably). It is time to buy a front end system. I want
something quiet, above all, so was considering either a Mac mini or a
VIA EPIA system. It would be controlled only via a remote control -
I've no plans to provide it with a pointing device or to use it for
general computing.

While most people have the idea that Macs are expensive, it seems to
me that a Mac mini actually costs less than an EPIA system with a
comparably nice looking case. However I'm not so confident that I
can turn a Mac mini into a completely remote-controllable system.
With no serial ports, I can't see how I can use it with LIRC. There
are USB-based remote control receivers for Mac use, but they come
with remote controls with only very few buttons and I don't expect
they can be used with any other remote.

So: Has anyone successfully built a complete Mac OS X front end
system, playing Myth, DVDs, ripped CDs, ripping CDs and DVDs etc, all
controlled from the remote. Or should I go for the EPIA? Or...
have I overlooked any other machine?

Finally how quiet is the Mac Mini? It has a fan, which I couldn't
hear in the shop, but then shops are noisy. EPIA 8000s are truly
silent.

No remote (it's the MCE version), but $63 and no rebates and free

Ooh. But buy it on a new buy.com VISA and get $30 off...that's nice.

Yeah, but then you've got that new credit card showing as "potential"
credit liability on your credit report for 3 years (assuming you never
use it). Still might be worth it depending on how many cards you have...

IMHO, being forced to use an IR-based RC5 remote is too much
of a hassle, anyway. I have two PVR-x50 remotes I'm not using (one from
my PVR-350 and one from the PVR-250). So, really, the tuner is not the
only part of the card I paid for but am not using.

What do you use for for remote control?

I've got an ATI Remote Wonder. I like the RF, but am still working on
improving range/sensititivy (especially through walls).

I'm going to need an IR Blaster anyway (this guy sells 'em for $12+$3
S&H http://www.irblaster.info/), which says to me that if I do it
right, I can replace my cable box with some sort of MythTV remote.
All the better if whatever it is controls the TV--though, come to
think of it, I guess I won't need to control the TV much beyond the
volume if I'm watching everything (DVD, Cable, etc.) through the
MythTV Box.

Volume can be controlled by Myth. You set up your TV with the
appropriate volume and then have Myth increase/decrease volume using
your sound card's mixer. Or, if you're using an external A/V receiver,
Myth should output line-level audio and you can control the A/V
receiver's volume with the IR blaster.

http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=10385910&loc=101&sp=1

If you really want the remote, $85, no rebates, and free shipping. But,
you can build the serial IR receiver ( http://lirc.org/receivers.html )
for a lot less than $22.

I have too many remotes as it is. I hadn't considered it until you
mentioned this, but if my MythTV box allows me to replace the three
remotes I need currently that makes it worth the cost of entry itself.

Yep. That's what I do. Believe me, it was liberating to finally remove
the batteries from my 5 remote controls!

I now have one remote--the ATI RW--which sends signals to the computer.
The computer then sends signals to the components (using an "improved IR
transmitter" - http://lirc.org/improved_transmitter.html ). And I don't
have to worry about "modes" (i.e. accidentally hit the "TV" button on
the remote and now the "Play" button doesn't work). Basically, I have
one remote mode, but Myth/LIRC/etc. provide the smarts to ensure it
knows what to do for each keystroke depending on where I'm at (recording
playback, MythMusic, xine for MythDVD or MythVideo, etc.).

The only thing I can't control with the remote is the TV. I have my
Myth box in a different room (the ultimate in silent PC) with a hole
through the wall for video and speaker cables. Since I'm using an A/V
receiver for audio, I control volume through it. So, I simply hit the
power button on the TV before sitting down for some Myth. Thought about
trying to mod the transmitter circuit to allow for another IR LED on a
cable without over-driving the serial port, but I'd have the IR LED
drawing power and the cable's resistance, so I decided it was easier to
just hit the power button. (Can't even do a separate simple transmitter
because I only have one serial port.)

1.  symlinking untility that renames complicated.nuv nice_name.nuv

[mythtv-users] Re: Front end choice: Mac Mini versus VIA EPIA. Mac OS X remote control?

2005-08-31 Thread Brad
I don't have a Mac Mini, but have also considered getting one to use as a front-end. I agree that they seem to be cheaper than comparably equipped PCs, and considerably nicer. As for being quiet, they definitely are that. There seems to be some people that are reporting loud fans in some situations, but when I tried doing a few things with one I couldn't even tell there was a fan. I do think that the DVD drive may be pretty noisy though. Although, I currently have a Pundit frontend with a DVD and I don't think it could be louder than that... and even its bareable. As for remotes, there are several available - just Google and you'll turn up a bunch. I've been using my Powerbook as an occasional front-end and use Salling Clicker so that I can control it from my bluetooth phone. I also wrote a very basic action suite for Clicker that gives you basic control of MythTV, its available here (http://homepage.mac.com/bdolman/FileSharing1.html) if you want to check it out. Finally how quiet is the Mac Mini? It has a fan, which I couldn't hear in the shop, but then shops are noisy. EPIA 8000s are truly silent. ___

Hardly any. I don't use 'em much.

I've got an ATI Remote Wonder. I like the RF, but am still working on
improving range/sensititivy (especially through walls).

Oh...you've got a remote that came with a card?

Volume can be controlled by Myth. You set up your TV with the
appropriate volume and then have Myth increase/decrease volume using
your sound card's mixer.

Oh. Duh.

Or, if you're using an external A/V receiver,
Myth should output line-level audio and you can control the A/V
receiver's volume with the IR blaster.

For audio I've got a SB Audigy Platinum with breakout box for this
machine. Which, now that I look at it has both an IR receiver and a
firewire port. Which, right now, just confuses me. I figured just to
hook up the, uh, traditional A/V cables along with the S-video for
starters. (It would be cool at some point to be able to hook up my VCR to
the box, just long enough to rip some VHSes that are rotting in the
garage)

Yep. That's what I do. Believe me, it was liberating to finally remove
the batteries from my 5 remote controls!

I'm salivating at the thought.

Very cool.

Is that a common problem?

[mythtv-users] Front end choice: Mac Mini versus VIA EPIA. Mac OS X remote control?

2005-08-31 Thread Stephen Dolan

For what its worth I have an EPIA M1 running as both a backend and a
frontend. With the built in mpg2 decoding hardware, I can play back my
recordings using about 12% of the cpu, so using a lower speed fanless
EPIA should pose no problems as a frontend

Stopping and restarting the backend got it going again. I don't
understand. It seems to be complaining about a misconfiguration, but,
if that was correct, just restarting the backend wouldn't fix it.

Please help, it's getting annoying that myth is unreliable. I can't
trust it to capture my shows for me.

[mythtv-users] Bootup, mythtv & mame.

2005-08-31 Thread Sam Zeke
Hello everyone!  First let me say that I'm completely new to MythTV, and slightly new to linux (specifically gentoo).

I was curious to know how to have MythTV start right after bootup in Linux, before anything else is shown.  Before Gnome or KDE is shown, or better yet not to have them load in the first place.

I also would like to know if there is a specific command switch to start MythTV in the Mame category/section of the interface when it does boot.  Is this possible?  If so, how?

The reason why I'm asking this specific question is because I'm building an arcade cabinet (from scratch, and almost done) and really like the frontend for Mame and want to have it be the first thing I see on the screen when I boot linux, besides my custom logo in bootsplash.

P.S. - Has anyone thought of ripping the frontend for mame fro mythtv, and making it a single frontend for mame?

I use phpMyAdmin. You need to have a web server running on your myth
backend, then you access it through you a web browser, and edit the
channels table in the mysql database.

I believe you can also edit the channel settings through mythweb, but
I haven't tried that, so I'm not sure you'll be able to do what you

Questions to ask yourself are what is the relevant fit to a multimedia
application - apart from noise.

I'm running an Epia SP13000 and the fans (CPU & PSU) can be heard when the
sound is muted - but I haven't gone for a quiet case with heat pipes &
passive cooling. Its diskless (the backend has the disk storage) so no
disk noise.

What I do have is:
6 channel sound output
s/pdif audio output
composite video out (PAL & NTSC)
s-video out
USB I/O
firewire I/O
100M ethernet
hardware mpeg2 decoder
hardware mpeg4 decoder
an internal serial port for a homemade LIRC IR detector
an internal parallel port for a homemade lcdproc LCD display

I reckon I spent my money wisely :-))

eg. xine DVD player - 5% cpu load

George Styles wrote:

It is mp3 but it is silent. I think they keep a silent track running all
the time and only sometimes use it for other languages or that 'audio
describe' thing.

Anyway, as sods law would have it, mencoder encodes the second, broken
audio track, and I end up with a silent movie :(

Anyone know how to remove a pid from a ts? or maybe just re-label it
as non-audio so mencoder doesnt pick it up?

I use "replex". then you can pick which audio stream you want and then pass
that straight to an mpeg file for a DVD.

Should the program association table stream tell mencoder which one to
use? is mencoder broken in that respect?

I think mencoder just picks whichever stream comes first ignoring the tags
on the stream stating if it is in english or w'eva.

what do others use to convert TS's to xvid? i may try ffmpeg, as that
seems to pick the correct audio stream...

So after you use replex and manually pick the audio stream (you can scan
for streams with -s). you can re encode nicely into something else.

I got this error when I swapped channel numbers around (to get the
channels to appear in a logical order on the program guide).

I assumed that it was a problem with the 'startchannel' because when I
fiddled with that also, my system started working again.
Unfortunately I didn't record exactly what I was doing so there's a
risk that something else I did caused the problem and fix.

[mythtv-users] mythtv and dbox2 on fc3

2005-08-31 Thread bh_aragorn

hey folks,

i'm pretty new to mythtv. my goal is to get it to work with a dbox2 on
fedora core 3. right now i'm compiling the svn-0.18.fixed with
--enable-dbox. at the configure-part, however, i tried --enable-dvb and
--enable-dvb-eit. but the output was "dvb support: no". could this be a
problem using the dbox? or can i just ignore this hint?

any help would be appreciated!
thx,
ben

[mythtv-users] Card preferably for ivtv

2005-08-31 Thread Peter Osterberg

I'm looking for a digital tv-card like WinTV NOVA-T but with a card reader.

I want to see Boxer which is the provider in Sweden but I can only find
cards with no card reader. I've looked at TV-cards that uses non ivtv
drivers as well but haven't found any card anyway.

Does anyone know of such a card that works well with Myth?

Thank you...

Well in my case, it fixes itself, just by restarting. I don't have to
change anything.

However, I am aware of funny things happening with the startchannel.
Sometime back I ran into a bug where it seemed to lose the setup and go
back to the default (3). I just changed it to another valid startup

[mythtv-users] Playback stops and seg faults mythfrontend after 5-15 mins

2005-08-31 Thread Rob Bongiovi
Hi! I am banging my head against a wall on this one. I
just hooked my mythtv front/backend onto my new HDTV.
Everything went smoothly until I tried to play video.
It plays (nicely) for 5-15 mins, the crashes
mythfrontend (mythbackend is fine). It does this for
live tv, playback of recorded tv, and, strangly, xine
did the same thing when playing a dvd (via Myth).

I'm running at 720p (1280x720). I've tried to connect
via DVI-HDMI and via a direct VGA connection (the TV
has both).

The frontend log just stops (here is the last few
lines of the log with verbose reporting on):

2005-08-31 Thread Kevin Kuphal

James Howison wrote:

Here's what I want to do, at least in the medium term. I'd
appreciate any guidance as to possibility/resources/experiences.

Say I have a box here in the states and a box in australia. I'd like
to run encoders on both and frontends in both places. I'd like both
frontends to have the ability to schedule recordings on either end.
(ie I'd like to schedule a recording on the australian backend from
the states). I think that should be possible, perhaps by adding
another source into each backend.

However I want these recordings to be pretty good quality, so I don't
expect to watch them in the states streaming off the backend in
australia (just not enough bandwidth). Rather I'd like the system to
know which end had scheduled the recording and to move that recording
to the end that wanted it.

Something like this (== is Lan, -- is internet link):

US Frontend <==> US Backend <---//---> Aus Backend <===> Aus Frontend
  ||
   US Cable Aus Digital TV

US Frontend speaks to US Backend, accessing a source which lists Aus
programming, and schedules a recording. US Backend then instructs
Aus Backend to do the taping and once it is finished to transfer the
recording automatically into the US Backend's Media Library (and
possibly store it in the Aus Backend with low priority). US Frontend
then watches it in streaming glory in the States. And, of course,
vice versa.

It would be possible for the US frontend to talk directly to the Aus
backend but then one would have to have a way of telling the Aus
backend where to put the recording ...

Live TV is also desirable but secondary, probably transcoded to
something suitably low bandwidth for previewing and peeking.

Is anyone doing something similar? Is this currently possible with
Myth? I guess all it really needs is a "post-record/transcode" hook
to tell the encoding end to transfer the file and a way to let the
requesting end know that the program is in the library.

Then I can watch me cricket, mate. And who could blame me for that?

What I had considered doing between me and another system similar to
this. I planned on having one of the sites be the master backend with
the SQL database. The other would be a slave. In my case, I had no
need for a remote frontend so I had considered a simple post-recording
job that would rsync the file over SSH to the master backend and then
update that host field in the recorded database so that it would appear
local to the master backend now such that the local frontend could play
it. This is certainly complicated by your use of frontends at both
locations. In your case, I would consider using nuvexport to simple
dump the file from either backend (it generates the SQL statements
needed to import it) and then rsync the file over SSH to the other
backend and import it. It would be best in this scenario for each
backend to be separate which would make scheduling a little more complex
as you couldn't do it from either frontend but it could easiliy be done
with mythweb.

[mythtv-users] Dvico MCE style remote + LIRC - looking for somone with a NORMAL(non-MCE) dvico remote to help.

2005-08-31 Thread Buzz

Hi All,

If you've got a "Dvico FusionHDTV DVB-T" , keep reading...please!

I've modified the dvico driver (see latest attached patch) to support both
dvico remote types, but I want to make sure I haven't broken the support for
the original remote in so doing. Specificially, I'm interested in knowing
if the original dvico remote generates 'event.hid' info with both 0x10046
AND 0x90001, or just with 0x10046 (the second option hopefully).

To test this, I need someone with the ORIGINAL (non-MCE) dvico remote to
help verify this by doing the following:
(it will require that your OS has all the usual development/compile stuff
installed, then...)

1) Check out the current lirc CVS code:
 cd ~
 cvs -d:pserver:anonymous at cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/lirc login
 cvs -z8 -d:pserver:anonymous at cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/lirc co lirc
 cd lirc

2) apply the attached patch :
 cd ~/lirc/daemons
 patch < ~/dvico_mce_hiddev.diff
 cd ~/lirc

3) build lirc in debug mode (no installation required, so it won't mess-up
your existing lirc install):
 cd ~/lirc
 ./autogen.sh
 ./setup.sh
 # when prompted:
 #  choose 1(driver configuration)->
 #  8(USB devices)->
 #  DViCO USB Remote->OK->
 #  3(Save config and run configure)-> OK
 make
DO NOT 'make install' - it's NOT required!

4) test the newly compiled lircd with:
 pkill lircd
 ./daemons/lircd -n --device=/dev/hiddev0 (in one window)
 irw (in another window)

 # (or wherever your linux puts the usb device it assigned to it, maybe
/dev/usb/hiddev0 )
 # then press a few random remote buttons and make sure you get output in
both windows, ctrl-c to stop.

5) email me the output from both windows :-)

6) cleanup:
 rm -rf ~/lirc
(and restart your normal lircd - however you normally do that)

Much Thanks in advance..!

Buzz.

Gnome & KDE are just windw managers. It's possible to remove them and
use a less resource hungry window manager like ratpoison. Search the
archives for ratpoison to get more info. My setup uses ratpoison and
it boots right into MythTV without any KDE desktop malarkey showing
up.

You could do this by editing the menu files for whatever theme you're
using. I think you may want to put a copy of mainmenu.xml in your
/home/mythtv/.mythtv directory and edit that to have the menu items
you want on it. Get mainmenu.xml from
/usr/share/mythtv/themes//. -Again, the archives
will have lots of stuff on this.

I noticed something odd - I did 2 burns today, both had the blue faces

Re: [mythtv-users] Front end choice: Mac Mini versus VIA EPIA. Mac OS X remote control?

2005-08-31 Thread Adam Bodnar
I have a mac mini and will be using it as a frontend. It's pretty damn
quiet, course I have other computers in my room making noise so at
least it's never gotten louder than that.

As for remote control of it, I've gone a little more expensive side
but that was cause I've wanted some more customization. I bought a IR
receiver made by a guy in Germany, it is called IRTrans. More
expensive, but I knew it would work with the Pronto remote I am
wanting to use. The only slight downside to it is that you have to
write AppleScripts to do anything, but that's very minor.

The Keyspan usb IR receiver can actually be programmed to work with
other remotes, just have to teach your remote to be a JVC vcr I think
it was. I found this in their documentation.

The only downside to using the Mac as a frontend is that MythMusic
doesn't currently work under it if I remember correctly from previous
messages on this list. Not a huge concern for me at the moment.

Re: [mythtv-users] OT: HD-3000 QAM working for anyone?

2005-08-31 Thread Greg Woods
I have gotten the HD3000 to work with QAM, via Comcast analog cable.
But, I used the V4L drivers. I don't have any HD content (yet) so I
didn't need that, and I had a hard time getting DVB to work.

If I try to split the signal between the HD3000 and a PVR-150 in the
same machine, then I can only get the low numbered channels (and poorly
at that), and the high numbered channels won't come in at all. This
happens if I just put the splitter on the line even if the second fork
of the splitter isn't connected to anything, and it also happens if I
just use the PVR-150 under Windows 2000, so that rules out a lot of
MythTV or driver problems. I never actually got both cards to work at
the same time; I kind of gave up when splitting the signal screwed
things up so badly. I've used them both individually at different times
(I've stuck with the PVR-150 to get hardware capturing).

I have wondered whether a signal amplifier might help. I'd really like
to use both cards. I've also thought about putting the HD3000 into the
new frontend I'm building and turning that into a slave backend too, but
it's only a Pundit-R with a Celeron CPU so I'm not sure it can handle
the software signal processing).

Yes, and no.  They don't seem to be sending email, but the
expiration date on your subscription is included every time you
download through DataDirect.  mythfilldatabase stores that
information in the database, and it's available on the status pages in
both the frontend and MythWeb.  It isn't that tricky to write a
little script to extract that and send yourself an email when you're
subscription is about to expire.

Same thing here, no notice, expires next week, went to the web site and was able to resubscribe.
Did they change the policy? Has anyone verified this? Perhaps they are not aware that email notifications are not being sent.

OK, fair enough, but given that in the past they've sent out

Will a PAL PVR-500 work with NTSC? I'm in a NTSC country, but I saw
this PVR-500 being sold locally at a very low price. The vendor said
it's the PAL model. I'm just wondering if I can use this card for NTSC

existing bttv card that I'm using for MythTV.

[mythtv-users] Adding a DVB-C card

2005-08-31 Thread Peter Martens
All,

I have a perfectly running mythtv (on FC3) with a PVR-350 and a
PVR-150. I recently got a DVB-C card which I want to add to the
system. I have a few questions:

- Will adding this card do something which can corrupt my database?
- I think I have to add xmltvids after scanning for channels? Will the
DVB card behave as another analogue card in LiveTV? I mean will Mythtv
know when to use the dvb-card or when to use the analogue card, since
there will be many channels overlapping and I would like to use the
dvb-card as "primary"-card. Or will channels which are on the dvb-card
be displayed as "other" channels then the analogue ones? Hope you all
understand what I am trying to ask...

Thanks in advance

RE: [mythtv-users] PVR-500 question

2005-08-31 Thread Joe Votour
Note that I'm talking generically, having worked with
chips that are capable of doing both NTSC and PAL, and
their assorted other hardware bits. I don't know what
parts a PVR-500 or a PVR-350 use, so this is a generic
explanation. I don't want to say that it's not
possible, but there's definitely strikes against it
happening. You're better off buying a proper card for
your region.

For the PAL PVR-500, it might work. European channels
are 8MHz wide, versus 6MHz on an NTSC system.
Therefore, the saw filter (assuming there is one, and
it's not done digitally) on the PVR-500 card would be
8MHz. (The saw filter, by the way basically causes
the signals before and after [frequency + saw/2] to be
clipped). So, you can get a 6MHz signal through an
8MHz saw filter (though 1MHz on each side could be
crap).

Where I see the problem on the PAL PVR-500 is that
they likely used a tuner chip that is only capable of
locking onto multiples of 8MHz, rather than one that
can lock anywhere (it's a cheaper and more readily
available part). If, on the other hand, they didn't,
with some software changes, it should be possible to
at least tune to the frequency and receive data.
S-Video input is also an option, since there should be
no need for the tuner. The MPEG-2 encoder should be
programmable to receive PAL or NTSC signals, so again,
with (maybe) a software change, you'd be able to have
your PAL PVR-500 work as an NTSC one.

The NTSC PVR-350 working in PAL though, well, I don't
think that's going to happen. You'd be feeding an
8MHz channel through a 6MHz saw filter (or the
equivalant) which would chop off part of the RF
signal. Your capture is absolute crap at this point.
S-Video might work, but that's about it. Same notes
on the software part, about programming the MPEG-2
encoder to work in PAL mode (if supported).

lirc 0.7.2 now has support for the streamzap usb remote under
linux-2.6 and it works like a champ. I dunno if the lirc_streamzap
usb driver will run on a non-intel platform.

As far as the EPIA is concerned, a bigger problem than a motherboard
fan is having a case fan. I bought a case that uses a fan and it
could be heard two rooms away and was louder than a fridge. I toned
it down with a 60 ohm resistor and now it is much more reasonable,
but I have to be carefull that the fan vents are unobstructed or the
system will overheat. The shuttle-pc is a far superior solution to
itx/epia. Quieter and uses modern cpus and desktop drives.

Oh...you've got a remote that came with a card?

Yeah. You can buy them separately, but I wouldn't recommend it. (IMHO,
it's not worth $40-$50 for a remote.)

For audio I've got a SB Audigy Platinum with breakout box for this
machine. Which, now that I look at it has both an IR receiver and a
firewire port. Which, right now, just confuses me. I figured just
to hook up the, uh, traditional A/V cables along with the S-video
for starters. (It would be cool at some point to be able to hook up
my VCR to the box, just long enough to rip some VHSes that are
rotting in the garage)

Yeah. I had that plan once, then I noticed how ugly the VHS videos look
compared to broadcast recordings, so I only recorded off one tape as a
test. Fortunately, I only have about 6 tapes, so it's not that big a
deal to just let them rot... Thought about buying DVD's, but now, I'm
even starting to think my collection of Stargate SG-1 DVD's is "old
tech" because it's not high-def.

Yep. That's what I do. Believe me, it was liberating to finally remove
the batteries from my 5 remote controls!

I'm salivating at the thought.

:)

Is that a common problem?

It's only a problem because my IR blaster is in a different room from my
TV. If I kept my Myth box, my 2 Dish receivers, my A/V receiver, my
VCR, my TV, and my speakers in the same room, I could control them all
with the IR blaster, but I choose aesthetics over being able to turn on
the TV and put everything but the TV and speakers in a different room.
Much quieter than any "silent" PC and much prettier than even the most
beautiful (and expensive) PC case.

[mythtv-users] C3 EPIA Guide Published

2005-08-31 Thread Austin Acton
Hi everyone,

I've published a little (well, big) guide on getting myth up and running
on a Via EPIA using Mandriva Linux 2005.

It may be useful to some new-to-linux users. Also, if you experts could
look it over, maybe you could find some things I could do better,
faster, or easier.

I also got bit by not renewing, while I was on vacation, so I lost a

It would be great if there was some way other than checking the status
to see when the sub has expired. Perhaps putting in the listings for
every entry, guide data expired, instead of no data.

HI!

Martin Bene wrote:

Wierd. Any PAL DVD Player is required to support mpeg2 audio and it may
optionally support ac3, but doesn't have to. Givedn this standard, you'd
expect a player to actually play mpega audio without any fiddling
around. But OK, that's what happens when reality meets standards.

So, a better solution would be:
	1) let users specify their preferred audio format (mp2 or ac3)

and
2) allow transcoding if the preferred audio format isn't
available in a recording.

Right. And it should be possible to specify the target bitrate (ffmpeg
-ab switch).

You don't need mpg123 or madplay for conversion of MPEG audio to AC3.
This is how I convert with ffmpeg alone:

ffmpeg -y -i "$1.mp2" -acodec ac3 -ab 224 "$1.ac3"

That's the first thing I had tried - didn't work. Only difference: the
demuxed audio files are saved as *.mpa by projectx; looks like ffmpeg
doesn't recognice the mp2 audio file with an .mpa extension but works
just fine with the same file renamed to .mp2. Aaaahhh!!!

Try this:

ffmpeg -y -f mp3 -i "file.mpa" -acodec ac3 -ab 224 "file.ac3"

I have a Mac Mini, and I think it's great. The form factor is

etc.) and general Unix functions. But, not for MythTV.

I use MythTV for HD material, which makes the Mini a no-go. The
1.42GHz CPU in mine is not fast enough to decode/display HDTV
material. The mini's ATI Radeon video hardware does have support
for MPEG2 acceleration, unfortunately Apple has chosen not to open an
API into this functionality. So, HD is out of reach for the Mini.

If I try to split the signal between the HD3000 and a PVR-150 in the

at that), and the high numbered channels won't come in at all. This
happens if I just put the splitter on the line even if the second fork
of the splitter isn't connected to anything, and it also happens if I
just use the PVR-150 under Windows 2000, so that rules out a lot of
MythTV or driver problems.

Use Jarod's guide on how to setup the PVR-350. Make sure you expand all
the sections dealing with the PVR-350. My first pass through I missed a
critical step that removed some horizontal lines on the screen.

I used the standard VGA monitor until it looked as if it was working
correctly then followed Jarod's guide to modify xorg files to output the
display via the PVR-350 to the TV and created new initrd so it would
boot up that way.

There was a learning curve but with the info in the guide and some help
from the list it was actually easier than I thought it would be.

I'd be amazed if the hardware didn't have MPEG2 acceleration/iDCT
support (I'd think all ATI cards for the past several years have had
this in hardware). Whether or not it is implemented in their driver is

Rob,

Do you get the same problems when running xine from the command line
(i.e. not from within MythTV)? If you do, I'd bet it's an NVidia video
driver issue, rather than a MythTV issue. Maybe your xorg.conf might
shed some light on the problem.

1) Completely wipe your system.
2) Read and _understand_ Jarod's Fedora Core installation guide.
3) Install Fedora and follow Jarod's guide until you have a working system.

http://wilsonet.com/mythtv/fcmyth.php

If you still cannot get your sytem running after following the guides,
I'd seriously recommend using Windows XP MCE which is a lot easier to
get up and running. Take the time to understand how Linux works and
realise the MythTV is only one application, but depends on many others
to work.

Good luck,

Yeah, that's what I said. The Mini, and most other Macs have video
chips that support iDCT offload. Unfortunately, Apple does not allow
access to that hardware via any standard API.

So, HD applications, like the EyeTV viewer, have system requirements
MUCH higher than they really should.

A 1GHz P4 should be able to easily handle 1080i/720p MPEG2 playback,
if they can use the MPEG2 acceleration.Without the hardware
assist, the requirements are much higher.

If by the 3 component plugs you mean the 3 RCA plugs on the 350's
output lead, please be aware that they are 2 audio plugs and 1
composite video plug (*not* 3 component video leads).

The PVR-350 outputs composite video and S-Video at the same time, so
you shouldn't need a different config. Just make sure you are using
the PVR-350s onboard decoder for video, and running the desktop on the
PVR-350 framebuffer device.

I'd probably recommend getting everything up and running using your
monitor, and then swapping over to the PVR-350 once configured. It's
certainly possible to run dual desktops using your video card and
PVR-350 at the same time, just requires a few more steps.

Sorry about misreading that. It's a shame that Apple do this, but
that's the price of proprietary systems and total control I guess.

[mythtv-users] Epia Board and PVR350 or PVR500

2005-08-31 Thread Joachim Schwarzhorn

Hallo,

I want to use an Epia Board SP8000 or SP13000 for my HTPC. On different
HTPC-forums I read, that the TV-Out of the Hauppauge PVR350 is better
compared to the onboard TV-out. And I heard about heat problems of the
PVR350 especially in small cases (like the ones for epia).

On the other hand: the PVR500 has two separate tunes (= independent
recording of two channels) but no TV-out.

Any suggestions or recommandations?

2005-08-31 Thread Rob Bongiovi
Yes, this problem occurs with xine from the command
prompt, so I, too, am thinking video driver and/or
card.

It could be cooling. Would the video stop, yet the GUI
still be active if it is a cooling problem? In both
xine and myth, I get kicked out to the x-windows GUI,
where I can open windows, etc. I have this in an antec
overture case, which I am not very happy with. I can't
add fans. I am thinking about pulling a tuner card and
getting more room around the video card.

2005-08-31 Thread Erik Pettersen
I hate to point out the obvious (ok, but i secretly love to)... but
isn't that more of a personal decision? What's more important to
YOU?!

Is it the capability to record two concurrent programs or to have
"better" TV out quality but have this alleged spectre of heat issues?
It's really an apples and clementines thing.

The previous model epia mini-itx boards (the M-series) had very
mediocre, I'm personally interested in knowing if it's better/improved
in the SP series.

*shrug* I dunno maybe someone will reply and say they have the pvr350
and an SP board and love it. Then someone else will say the same
about the 500 (speaking of which: another wrinkle: haven't the
pvr500's been a little cranky in general with some VIA chipsets?)

Re: [mythtv-users] Epia Board and PVR350 or PVR500

2005-08-31 Thread IvanK.
I made the stupid mistake of not doing my homework when it comes to research
before buying and ended up with a sp13000 in a Travla C137-120W case with a
pvr250 and a pvr350. Up to that point I thought the main generator of heat
in my atx box were the three 200GB seagate drives and the 2.4Ghz pentium4.
But the pvrs ran so hot inside this tiny box (the mini-itx box) that my
system froze a few times. And I only have a 12GB 2.5" drive inside. The
main storage is usb2-connected. After I put 4 fans inside the box, it's
running sufficiently cool not to freeze any more. And louder too.

If you still haven't forked over the cash for a pci pvr, I'd really suggest
you look into those usb2 plextors mp402 or whatever the number. Search the
mailing list.

But what you heard about the superb tv-out quality if the pvr350 is true.
However make sure you cool that card well in a mini-itx box or it'll overheat
and start introducing artefacts in the mpegs.

Output from mythfrontend when starting and pressing watch TV (does same
thing if I try to watch a recording).

P.S. Yes, I disabled xv, thought it would help, but doesnt, and doesnt
hurt either.

I had the same issue at one time. My fix was to go
into alsamixer and change the bit rate to 48000. I
think this can also be done in the .alsarc, but I
haven't tackled that yet... Movies play perfectly
with DD5.1/6.1 and DTS through a Chaintech 710.
Sounds awesome.

I've been round so many times now trying to get the magic "-vo xvmc -vc

Doesn't the video decoding chipset on Via EPIA motherboards only help
with MPEG2? I haven't tried the xvmc-patched mplayer with MPEG2 either,
so I can't help much there I'm afraid.

Your filter is marked to show all videos instead of only browsable

[mythtv-users] Cable Box Sources

2005-08-31 Thread Gerald J. Berg

I use a Hauppauge 500 for capturing
multiple channels, but it can only select up to 125 channels. I just picked up 2
boxes from Time Warner so my MythTV box will be able to select from a broader
range of channels. These cable boxes are Scientific Atlanta Explorer 3250.
There is an IR port in the back, but the technician told me it was purposely
disabled by Time Warner.

There is also a USB port on the front of
these boxes, but I am not sure how it can be used.

I am looking for a source to purchase 4
of these SA 3250 boxes (or some similar brand) for these reasons:

1.
Eliminate

[mythtv-users] Motorola DTH335-4 Serial Port

2005-08-31 Thread Duncan Ritchie

I have a Motorola
DTH335-4 satellite receiver on Sky digital in New Zealand.
I have my
Myth box all up and running except for changing channels on the
receiver.

It has a RS232 port
on which I can see information that can be translated into the current
channel.  This is in the format chan I haven't yet
sorted out what chan is - channel 1 = 67, 2 = 68, 10 = 40, 14 = 43.  I
haven't spent the time yet to decode the chan information.  If the channel
is blocked it doesn't signal at all.  These messages are sent every 5
seconds or so.  They keep transmitting even in soft power off.  On
change to a channel that could be restricted it does this:
#APPSTOR:
appstore_verify_application#APPSTOR: checking app flags#APPSTOR:
checking module flags#APPSTOR: calling
am_storing_request

On hard power on it
does this:
Socket pair created
: first = 1 and second = 2.

***@(#)OpenTV
SkyNZ nwpkg 2.9 NO_DEBUG ZENITH 5512

***gdbo
raw port not initialized#INTPRT[RESET] starting#INTPRT[RESET]
init#INTPRT[RUNNING] running:0x1

I have tried sending
it commands but without any luck.  It seems to ignore all
input.

Does any one know if
the box can be controlled via serial?  If not has anyone successfully
controlled one with IR?

Regards

Duncan

You're right, it doesn't look like a 90002. I asked because I seem to remember
the older modules loaded without question on my board and I spent a while
working out why the damn thing didn't work.

The easiest way is to look at the card and read the chip manufacturer and
numbers off the chips and also get the Hauppauge model off the sticker on
tuner shielding. Having said that it looks like you have an earlier card. You
also check the pictures here:
http://www.linuxtv.org/wiki/index.php/PCI_devices_DVB-T

Also you might get some pointers here: http://cuboidal.org/divo/dvb/

Sorry, I missed the start of this thread but you look like you have the right
device nodes from the drivers you have - what problem are you having?

You're probably out of luck.  The only
places that sell cable boxes to individuals are probably selling hacked
boxes that are illegal to use.  Even if you managed to get a legal
one, Time-Warner probably won't be willing to provision it.  And
if you do manage to talk them into provisioning it, the provisioning
process will disable the ports that Time-Warner disables on their own
boxes.

[mythtv-users] Foxtel digital picture quality

2005-08-31 Thread Kent Williams
I've been using DVB with myth for quite some time now here in Sydney
(almost 2 years), and I'm now looking at getting a PVR150 cards to
capture Foxtel Digital via s-video.
I've seen Foxtel Digital mentioned in the archives a few times, and was
wondering what people have found the picture quality like. Does anyone
have any sample clips?
I'm worried that now I'm used to the excellent picture quality of DVB
that I'll be disappointed with Foxtel Digital captured over s-video. :)

It is frustrating that Foxtel now provide their Foxtel-IQ pvr solution,
but no legal way to capture the digital streams for us Myth users :(

Cheers,
-Kent

Edit your mysql.txt file and change the LocalHostName to be the hostnameit has at home (look in your settings database and verify what the nameis).  Then it won't matter what your real IP/Hostname is.

[mythtv-users] HD3000 and High-Def

2005-08-31 Thread A JM
I'm looking for some background on HD since I currently only run in SD.

Can someone give me the lay of the land as far as being able to recieve HD and watch HD?  I "assume", bad word on my behalf, that by owning an HD card (HD2000- HD3000) that the "decoding" portion of the signal is complete all that is left is the actual signal?

We currenly have cable but do not use a cable box so we only get channels below 70, I think it's with Insight Cable. Do you need a box or other hardware to recieve the signal or just plug and play?

Thanks for any insight the group can give.

I think also even though you own your own box it's theft to not pay for the service... so you'd still have a monthly charge and your equipment would become obsolete...

Hi Jon

The SP13000 uses a CN400 rather than a CLE266 chipset and this has mpeg4
as well as mpeg2 decode - thats why I bought it!!
