[mythtv-users] Analog input to Fusion HDTV DVT-B plus card

2005-11-26 Thread W.Kenworthy
I have a fusion HDTV plus card which works well for DVB-T. According to
the docs, it has an analog input but this does not show up in MythTV.

Is it possible to use this input?

I used to have this problem when I used PS streams instead of TS streams with
my DVB-T card. My suggestion is for you to test your database for
corruption. One of the tables is used for positioning within a video file
and if it gets corrupt new entries can't be added. MythTv then can't figure
out it position.

I'm not using FC4 x86_64 anymore (turns out that the

I took Jarod Wilson's xorg.conf file

It was working, and I think (but can't say 100%, I

I'm attempting to convert some of my MPEG2 PVR-500 recordings to

I'm running Knoppmyth R5A22 with nuvexport 0.2 0.20050922.svn.

I'm trying to run in interactive mode to get used to the program but
get this error after choosing a show:

'x' outside of string in unpack at /usr/local/share/nuvexport/
mythtv/nuvinfo.pm line 34, line 2.

(I've tried both export to XVID and to .nuv and .sql options).

Has anyone seen this error (there's one google result, some IRC
discussion with an unanswered (AFAICS) question about this error)?

I get the same error if I do searches via the command-line interface.

Any ideas?

I'm assuming you're trying to get LIRC working on a Hauppauge card since those
use lirc_i2c. When you emerge lirc on Gentoo, you need to pass an option.
It should look like this:

LIRC_OPTS="--with-driver=hauppauge" emerge lirc

You can also make things easier by just adding
LIRC_OPTS="--with-driver=hauppauge" to the end of your /etc/make.conf file so
you can just do "emerge lirc" and not worry about it again.

I just did a fresh rescan. Note that I had to add this particular
transponder (12607 on EuroBird1) since I've been missing two programs -
and one of them now crashes MythTV the following way:

2005-11-27 02:26:01.857 TVRec(2) Error: Channel: '6' was not found in

It's interesting it finishes with channel "63990" while I asked for "6".
Anyway, a mysql record with channum="6" is in database.

Bad is that it's completely locked and I have to kill both frontend and

Re: [mythtv-users] DVB EPG in MythTV?

2005-11-26 Thread Rudy Zijlstra

Joe Votour wrote:

Newer SVN versions of MythTV apparently do support
pulling in data from the DVB program descriptors (I
live in North America, where DVB isn't available, so I
can't comment on how well it works). I have done some
DVB-related work for my employer though, so I do know
how the system works.

The EIT is the "Event Information Table" (if I
remember my TLAs correctly). The DVB specification
supports sending lots (and I mean lots) of information
within it (the basics such as show start/end times,
program name and genre, but also things like complete
cast lists, MPEG format information, etc.).

The way it works is that within the MPEG-2 stream that
is received by your DVB card, there are video, audio
and PCR (timing) PIDs for one or many "channels",
there are extra PIDs that are added in by your
provider (or may come from the original satellite feed
- regardless of how they got there, they are there).
A DVB card can listen on these PIDs and capture/parse
the data, and turn it into program guide entries.
Most of it is TLV-type (type, length, value) data with

a fair amount of ASCII text.

As I said, I don't know the specifics of the EIT
processing within MythTV, but I would suggest that you
stick with the tv_grab programs if you get accurate
data from them. The reasons that I suggest this are:
1. With the DVB streams that I have seen, the program
guide information within the DVB stream is only good
for 1-2 hours (typically, you get the "now" and
"next", the currently showing program, and the next
program). This means that it will be difficult to
plan far ahead in the future for scheduling, since the
data just won't be there.
2. In order to get complete EIT data, your DVB card
will likely need to hit multiple frequencies to
capture the EIT data on those frequencies. If you
have a single card and aren't recording, this won't be
an issue, but if you're recording back to back shows
and only have a single card, you've got nothing to
tune to other frequencies to find the EIT data. In
that case, you're missing program guide listings.

There is EIT next/now (which you have been describing above) and EIT
schedule.
EIT schedule can cover as many days ahead as the operator wants to / has
data available / has bandwidth available.

Typically, the dutch xml grabber can get 3 day ahead (limit of the
website where it is taken from), and Astra satellites typically have
between 3 and 5 days available in the stream.

Again, this information doesn't come from the MythTV
implementation (I've implemented this in the past, and
it's quite painful), but comes from my knowledge in
the area. YMMV, depending on what kind of hardware
you have, and how much program data you want (I'm
quite happy with DataDirect, and having about 10 days
worth of listings).

Which is only available to those living in the US (which many of us are
not).
Myth takes the program info from the tuned stream, irrespective whether
you are watching that stream or not.

So far I'm using tv_grab_dvb which works fine

Well it is ok data for video, since I am using mobitv on my treo

I just compiled latest SVN and can see some EIT related changes in the

I select the EIT). It even seems to do something since I just started
the backend and it is tuning in the background to various channels, see

However, I haven't seen anything in EPG yet. Maybe if I give it enough
time?

To your question "which version" I must tell that I've seen some EIT
related settings even in 0.18.1, IIRC but I don't think it worked. Then
in -r 7738 there were some improvements and in this SVN head now it
seems to be finally implemented logically and maybe that it even
works :-)

Re: [mythtv-users] DVB EPG in MythTV?

2005-11-26 Thread Joe Votour

[mythtv-users] [mythtv] Modifying the D1 Home Media Centre to use a tv_grab script

2005-11-26 Thread William Uther

Hi,
  A few quick points.

   - Myth is GPL. You should be able to get the source to the D1
version of mythfilldatabase and have a look at it. Once you have
this, figuring out how to switch xmltv input back on should be
relatively easy. Note, I use the term "relative" in the sense of "it
will be easier with source than without source". Depending on your
mAd haxor skillz, and how much D1 changed mythfilldb, that might not
be easy in any absolute sense. But, at least you'd know you're
working with the right version of mythfilldb, which uses the correct
database schema, etc.
   - I've seen some posts about setting up cron jobs to call
mythfilldatabase rather than having myth call it. This seems
somewhat irrelevant to me. You can set things up either way, but you
need to get mythfilldatabase running and accepting XMLTV input
first. I'm assuming that the HMC already calls some version of
mythfilldatabase - I'd just leave that part of things alone, until
you know you need to mess with it.
   - When you do look at the D1 version of mythfilldatabase, it
might also help to look at this script: http://
www.onlinetractorparts.com.au/rohbags/xmltvau/ . That script takes
data from D1 and generates XMLTV data, allowing normal myth users to
use the XMLTV data. You want to do the reverse, get normal XMLTV
data into D1 format. It might give you insight into how D1 store
their data and help you add normal XMLTV input back into your HMC.
Or it might not :)
   - Once you get all that working, there are other XMLTV sources
than just tvguide.org.au: http://www.cse.unsw.edu.au/~willu/xmltv/ .
Don't get me wrong, they're a great source and probably the one I'd
try first (I wrote the XMLTV grabber :), but don't think they're the
only source.

Be well,

Will  :-}

definitely the colorful icon version, adds minimal screen coverage but adds
the cool factor. Its too bad theres no way to further customize the skins
while running, such that a person could decide to show the icons or not.

btw, I really like the position information box you've created. The only thing
I can add for a comment is to get rid of the wasted space to minimize the box

[mythtv-users] New DVB problems....

2005-11-26 Thread Peter Osterberg
I got everything working yesterday but for some reasen my devices got
lost. I don't knwo what manouver I did to make them dissapear.

I'm running Gentoo, with vanilla kernel 2.6.11.11 and Myth 0.18.1-r2.

.My card is a NOVA-CI-S

The devices might have disapeared after a reboot, not sure but I am
certain that I don't know how to recreate them.
I've tried MAKEDEV dvb since I found some "howto" telling me to try that
but it says "don't know how to make device "dvb"".

Any suggestions?

Splitting up backend and frontend is awesome, especially when you
netboot the frontend off the backend. That way all the heat and noise
is on the other end of the network from the TV and the user. I'd go
7200 so that you can use more tuners in the future.

IMHO, more gigs are far more important than fast drives. Spend money on
space, not on speed. (Also, RPM's and cache are only two of about 5
hard drive parameters that are required to determine the hard drive
performance characteristics)

MPEG-2 streams don't take much bandwidth. A 10.8Mb/sec stream (the
maximum allowed by the DVD specification--including audio and video) is
1,350,000 bytes per second (=1318KiB/sec=1.29MiB/sec). Since the
PVR-x50's electronics will hit the quality ceiling far before that kind
of bandwidth is required, you'll most likely use something like
4-6Mb/sec for "high-quality" recordings, meaning you'll using at most
60% of that, or about 0.75MiB/sec. If you use MPEG-4, you need even
less bandwidth.

Even for high-definition, bandwidth isn't a problem. High-definition
recordings seem to be between 4-10GiB/hr (averaging about 7GiB/hr), so
taking the worst-case scenario (10GiB/hr), we have
2982616bytes/sec=2912KiB/sec=2.85MiB/sec. At this rate, you should be
able to write several high-def streams concurrently even with "slow"
hard drives.

Make sure it's UDMA66 or above (and you're unlikely to be able to find a
new drive today that's not) and that you have an 80-wire IDE cable (if
using PATA) and you'll be fine.

Hallo.
I'd go with the faster drive. There could be more heat and more
power draw, but it will make sure that you won't have any issues
later down the line if you add extra tuners, etc.

And everyone has a war story about a different brand of hard drive.
Get one with at least a 3 year warranty. Seagate, I believe, has 5
year warranties now but I'm not sure.

[mythtv-users] LIRC experience and ideas

2005-11-26 Thread Robert Denier
Typically to use LIRC you need a receiver and a compatible remote. I bought
packard bell receivers which come with the little packard bell remotes, that
I wouldn't really recommend for long term use.

Here is the best plan I could come up with, so far anyway...

1) Buy a nice learning universal remote.
2) Set it to use the TIVO dvr code or something else nice, perhaps a dvd code.
Make sure whatever you use gets responses in mode2.

At this point you will have a remote with a lot of buttons you can map, and
likely some that don't do anything, that you want to use. You could try to
search for codes forever that make all the buttons you want to work, to
actually work, but, well, I found that problematic.

Another alternative is the following.

3) Choose a secondary remote that isn't used with anything. I used the
packard bell one. Take the file from your secondary remote and do something
like
cat secondaryRemoteLirc.conf >> /etc/lirc.conf
The goal here is to append the secondary remote codes to this file. Now go in
and relabel all the secondary remote codes to something else. I suggest
prepending something like pb_.

4) Now take the buttons that don't do anything and teach them using them
buttons from the secondary remote.

5) Finally edit your lircrc file to make it all work.

This should allow you to use all the buttons on a learning remote you want,
without trying to find a magical code that has all the buttons active, and
that your receiver can see the codes from.

Good Luck.

[mythtv-users] Xebian and 2.6 for mythtv

2005-11-26 Thread C. R. Oldham
Greetings,

>From the lists I seem to have gleaned that some people are running a 2.6
kernel on an Xbox with Xebian. I managed to get the kernel compiled, but
it's not able to mount the root filesystem. I get

Cannot open root device "ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part2" or
unknown-block(0,0)
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic - not syncing : VFS unable to mount root fs on
unknown-block(0,0)

On a "regular" linux install I could fix this (e.g. lilo or grub needs
better options) but I don't understand and can't find docs for the xbox boot
process.

Has anyone been successful with a 2.6 kernel and Xebian? How do you get it
booted? I have Xebian installed on a native ext2 filesystem (drive "F") on
my Xbox and did have it running under 2.4. It's just not quite fast enough
for mythtv. I see almost imperceptible stuttering when playing DVDs with
Xine, and I was hoping that the better IO layer in 2.6 would get rid of
that.

Either is fast enough to keep up with mythtv so its up to you. Personally I

IMHO - MAxtor drives are junk. Have had to replace 2 already. Of course,
they were both covered under warrenty so its not a huge deal. I noticed both
times they upgraded me to a different drive so it might be model specific.
Mine were both 240gb drives from about a year ago.

I have a 4800rpm laptop drive on mine...it is a frontend though.
Server has 5400rpm disks because of price, power reqs. and cooling needs
are smaller.

No, not strictly simple.  As I remember, I had to use the --force
option of the rpm command.  See the man page for rpm.  After
issuing the command, I seem to remember that mplayer didn't work, UNTIL
I had successfully installed LIRC.  But this is all from memory, I
can retrieve the notes if absolutely necessary.

Also I was only able to get theses buttons
to work (up, down, left, right and the number buttons) and while these buttons
work, they seem to repeat 4 times for every button I push.

Any help would be appreciated.
As noted above, I can go through the log books for the MythTV systems
and extract the notes.  But, I'd rather not make that effort,
preferring instead to try to answer specific questions.

Here are some of the other things needed to get the ATI Remote Wonder
working.  Remember that most of these items are part of the LIRC
package, but you have to copy some files to the right place(s) for your
particular system.

You will need a file called "/etc/lircd.conf" that matches your ATI
Remote Wonder.  Most of the time, you can use one of the files in
the LIRC package.  But, you can also use irrecord to make your own
file, one that you absolutely know will match.  To use irrecord,
see the man page for it.  The man page is pretty good, but I'm not
sure how clearly it states that you have to stop other programs from
running while you run irrecord.  Also, irrecord requires one
specific device, /dev/lirc.  You may have to create a symbolic
link to /dev/lirc0 on your system.

But that's not all!  The names you chose (or are already in place)
in /etc/lircd.conf, must match the names in the file.
~/.mythtv/lircrc.  If they don't all match, then only those that
do match will work.  (Like say maybe, up, down, left, right,
)  When the names don't match, the key doesn't work.  For
example, one person might call the green key at the top "Power",
another might call it "On", or "System", or whatever.  I had this
problem for the green key, and it was hard to track down, but very easy
to fix.

Please read any and all documentation for LIRC that you can, as well as
the mailing list for LIRC.  The mailing list can be found on the
LIRC website, lirc.org, but news.gmane.org has the archive and it's a
bit easier to search there (on gmane).  Also please review your
LIRC installation, control files, etc.  If you come up with what
you think is a good installation but it still doesn't work, then post
the details of the problem.  I'll try to help solve specific
problems.

working, agreed).  I'm using the frontend on a Breezy Ubuntu, the
backend is on a Debian.

Well, complete disclosure
requires the following to be said:  There is a bit of work to be done switching
from kernel support to LIRC.  But after doing the work, I was quite happy
to have made the extra effort.

Here is how I started: I removed the LIRC package that had been loaded as part
of Fedora Core 3 installation.  Then, I downloaded lirc-0.7.2 package from
lirc.org.  By following the documentation in
the lirc-0.7.2 package (and there is a lot of documentation scattered
throughout), I was able to make the switch.

Before copying all my notes from the process, I recommend that you start with
the lirc-0.7.2 (or whatever is the latest) package and see how far you can get.
Since you are using both Ubuntu AND Debian, I'll assume that you know your way
around Linux.

Here's a hint: Only one of the kernel modules, ati_remote -and- lirc_atiusb,
can be active.  So, you must rename the ati_remote kernel module, AND then
you have to adjust the Ubuntu equivalent file for Fedora Core's
"/etc/modprobe.conf".

By now, it might seem that LIRC isn't worth it, like it might be way too much
work.  It isn't.  The LIRC package is really WELL DONE.  I have
no regrets whatsoever.  In fact, the package is so good, I was able to
figure out how to have multiple ATI Remote Wonder remotes controlling multiple
MythTV systems.  Having multiple MythTV systems using only the kernel
support might be a real challenge.

complete disclosure requires the following to be said:  There is a
bit of work to be done switching from kernel support to LIRC.  But
after doing the work, I was quite happy to have made the extra effort.

Here is how I started: I removed the LIRC package that had been loaded
as part of Fedora Core 3 installation.  Then, I downloaded
lirc-0.7.2 package from lirc.org.  By following the documentation
in the lirc-0.7.2 package (and there is a lot of documentation
scattered throughout), I was able to make the switch.

Before copying all my notes from the process, I recommend that you
start with the lirc-0.7.2 (or whatever is the latest) package and see
how far you can get.
Since you are using both Ubuntu AND Debian, I'll assume that you know your way around Linux.

Here's a hint: Only one of the kernel modules, ati_remote -and- lirc_atiusb,
can be active.  So, you must rename the ati_remote kernel module,
AND then you have to adjust the Ubuntu equivalent file for Fedora
Core's "/etc/modprobe.conf".

By now, it might seem that LIRC isn't worth it, like it might be way
too much work.  It isn't.  The LIRC package is really WELL
DONE.  I have no regrets whatsoever.  In fact, the package is
so good, I was able to figure out how to have multiple ATI Remote
Wonder remotes controlling multiple MythTV systems.  Having
multiple MythTV systems using only the kernel support might be a real
challenge.

Either is fast enough to keep up with mythtv so its up to you. Personally I
would go for the faster drive.

IMHO - MAxtor drives are junk. Have had to replace 2 already. Of course,
they were both covered under warrenty so its not a huge deal. I noticed both
times they upgraded me to a different drive so it might be model specific.
Mine were both 240gb drives from about a year ago.

I started having this same problem after my system had been up several
years. I tried _everything_, including trying to chase down the 'RCE'
messages, which were a red herring. In the end it appeared that it
was just the DVD drive failing... it was actualyl having trouble
reading sectors off some disks. Switching in a new drive fixed the
problem. I don't have a suggestion for which drive to use, since I
finally got around to fixing this YESTERDAY.

Not the original poster, but I've transcoded a few shows to the 650 for playback with TCPMP
, which works quite well with Xvid or avi files, as well as mp3s.

I used nuvexport to transcode; can't recall how long it had to churn away.

Speaking of the remote...I assume that the IR receiver is limited to the
IR codes that the Silverstone remote can send. (Contrast: a homebrew
LIRC serial remote, which can handle almost anything.) Is that true?
Are you using this for your remote control?

I have the Silverstone LC11-M case. It uses the iMon Median VFD and iMon
PAD IR.
I can tell you that the IR receiver does not appear to be limited in any
way on its reception of IR signals.

Very interesting. My ati wonder USB receiver (from a "Lola" x10 system)
seems only to get its own codes.

I happened to be fighting with my lirc setup, and getting no response. I
had mode2 running, when I used the TV remote to change the volume of the
TV, which was not hooked up to mythtv. And I was suprised to see output on
the monitor! A quick check showed that the IR receiver/mode2 combo could
handle a couple of the various remotes lying around. And my lirc setup was
fine: my Silverstone remote had dead batteries! I'm buying some more
batteries today so I can check out the remaining orphan remotes.

I'd be interested in knowing what you find out.

BTW I think that this could provide a means of mapping/determining the key
codes of any remote. No that you can do much with that, unless you have a
'learning' remote which you can program at the byte level or for example,
a Hewlett Packard calculator with IR output, which can be programmed at
the byte level, or for another example, a bluetooth enabled cell phone
which has a Java JVM in it, and a Java program to present the choices.

I'm interested in getting arbitrary signals for two reasons:
1. determine codes from the various remotes, as you say. (I can now do
that with a homebrew receiver, but it needs a real -- not USB -- serial
port and those are rare these days. Also, my receiver, built from the
low-end of what's on lirc.org, is not really suited to production use.)
2. Allow use of the *best* remote from my home theatre system. If I can
process any code, I can pick the remote based solely on size and keypad
arrangement. (Many remote controls seems to have be designed for use by
some species other than H. sapiens.) Also, when the most-pressed keys
wear out, I can replace it without having to buy an expense matching
replacement.

My plan is to capture the IR codes at the computer and then translate
and retransmit (over a real serial port use LIRC and wires to small IR
diodes) to the various equipment. This allows me to use an Athlon-64
running Linux to control things, rather than a so-called Universal remote.

Consider the following as an example. If I switch to "DVD" then one
button labeled DVD on the remote could cause all of the following to happen:

a. switch HT amp to DVD audio input
b. raise volume on amp to compensate for lower input (skip if already in
DVD mode).

c. switch TV input to DVD
d. set TV aspect ratio
e. turn off TV's built-in speakers (which I may use for simple viewing,
e.g., the news, instead of the surround sound system).

Subsequent presses of FF, REW, pause, etc. would be translated and
passed on to the DVD player. Pressing another button would reconfigure
everything for mythtv.

Much of the above can be done without so elaborate a scheme, but no
univeral remote is going to allow the flexibilty that this will. The
end result is a system where the complexity is hidden inside LIRC setup
and perl srcripts inside the HT computer, and a single remote provides a
simple, consistent, and powerful control point.

I ripped them in Perfect for now, but I'm sure the problem is that it
can't mount the file as it's stored on the MBE and not locally on the
frontend. They play no problem on the MBE. I'm sure most of the codecs
are available, and when I checked the /video/videos directory, it
ripped it as a .VOB. I just picked up another DVD for $6 at Walmart
and I tried ripping that on Excellent, to see the file size and
quality difference.

You can use folders, and if you enable the "Gallery View Browses
folders" (Or whatever it's titled, something similar to that), it'll
browse the files and folders in a proper manner as you'd expect.

That good, thanks.

You need to go into the "Video Manager", and from the menu for each
recording, go to "Search IMDB". This'll do it's best to get the info
and poster from IMDB. If that doesn't work, you can find the movie on
IMDB yourself, and enter the number (without the "tt", so "01234567"
for movie ID "tt01234567", find that ID in the URL) into the "Manually
get from IMDB" option.

Alright. I didn't experiment much with theis yet as the remote doesn't
want to work, but the MBE seems to run very well. It's stable and
sends recordings out to frontends with no problems.

If you want the best combination of redundancy and speed, use RAID
0+1. This will, however, only give you 600G of space, rather than the
900G RAID 5 gives you.

Raid 0+1 is two drives striped together (600G) and then mirrored on
the other two drives? Maybe I should get a cheap raid 5 card with 5 or
6 SATA ports on it for better performance?

I'd forget about RAID unless you simply *cannot* lose the data on the
drives or you are doing *true* hardware RAID since software RAID can be
a tricky proposition. I've gone back and forth with RAID and ended up
not using it. I back up my DVD rips to dual-layer DVDs (most rips are
Divx with AC3 tracks for space) which is cheap and does the job.
Anything else I can lose since it's just TV. Best part, I get to use
all the space I paid for rather than losing some to RAID.

Just my 2 cents.

[mythtv-users] No DVD video until I transcode something

2005-11-26 Thread Brad DerManouelian
I've recently installed xine-lib to enable DVD playback. Before xine,
I got purple/green blocks for video. Now I've got a strange issue
that feels like a permissions problem, but I'm not sure where to check.

When I reboot the machine (something I've been doing a lot more than
I like, lately), and I immediately try to RIP or watch a DVD, I get
the purple/green blocks. This problem goes away whenever I transcode
anything. So after a reboot, I need to record some live tv for a
couple of seconds, transcode it (which makes me lose audio for some
other reason), then go back to watch DVD and it's fine.

It's not a huge deal since I shouldn't be rebooting very often, but
these kinds of puzzles bug me until I figure them out. Any ideas?

[mythtv-users] MythTV on Itanium (IA-64)?

2005-11-26 Thread Erik Dooper
Hi,

maybe a weird question - I can get my hands on a dual Itanium 64-bit
box, w/ 4GB mem for little $$. I have been looking for a decent server,
since my PIII-933 is about to give up, and this came across my path.

Does somebody have any experiences running MythTV (backend only with a
PVR 250 and a PVR500MCE) on such an architecture (IA-64)? How dependent
is MythTV on the IA-32 architecture?

regards,

Erik

I ripped them in Perfect for now, but I'm sure the problem is that it
can't mount the file as it's stored on the MBE and not locally on the
frontend. They play no problem on the MBE. I'm sure most of the codecs
are available, and when I checked the /video/videos directory, it
ripped it as a .VOB. I just picked up another DVD for $6 at Walmart
and I tried ripping that on Excellent, to see the file size and
quality difference.

Alright. I didn't experiment much with theis yet as the remote doesn't
want to work, but the MBE seems to run very well. It's stable and
sends recordings out to frontends with no problems.

Raid 0+1 is two drives striped together (600G) and then mirrored on
the other two drives? Maybe I should get a cheap raid 5 card with 5 or
6 SATA ports on it for better performance?

Yes, the quality of hard drives is questionable these days. Thats why
I wanted to use raid.

Re: [mythtv-users] Converting shows to PDA suitable format

Paul V. Gratz wrote:

I have a treo 650 and I've encoded a few shows for it. I have been
using mencoder to encode it to the built-in lavc endcoder for divx.
In my understanding divx is an early implementation of mpeg4 (prior to
the release of the standard). Xvid is another. I'm not sure what the
relative differences are but I think they more or less amount to the
same kind of quality per bitrate. Now that mpeg4 is out I think they
both produce legal mpeg4 output.

OK, so I might be better to look at mpeg4. It seems to be well supported.

I get much better performance using mencoder (part of mplayer). Its
something like 15-20 minutes to encode a 1 hour program on my P4 2.8Hz
HT machine.

That's fast.

I use nuvexport to give me the raw *.nuv file

What is a raw *.nuv file? I feed the nuv files, as recorded, straight
into ffmpeg. It can handle the mpeg2-TS directly.

then I
run mencoder on that file to re-encode for my palm machine. Here is
the mencoder command line I use:

(I use nuvexport not mythtranscode)

mencoder -o outfile.avi -aspect 4:3 -ovc lavc -lavcopts
vcodec=mpeg4:mbd=2:turbo:vbitrate=300:aspect=4/3:acodec=mp3:abitrate=96
-oac lavc -vf-pre pp=lb -vf scale=320:200 -af volnorm infile.nuv

Replace outfile.avi and infile.nuv with the input and output files you
want. The resultant file is ~150MB for 1 hour. The quality is very
high so you could probably halve the 300kbs bit rate and still have a
usable video if you want smaller files.

Yes. 150kbs is a low end point for me - barely good enough, but 200
kbps and up are good.

The assumption is that you are going from a full screen TV program to
a full 4:3 aspect ratio output file. You can get slightly better
quality if the program is 16:9 and you crop it but it may be more pain
than its worth (look at the mencoder man page for the info on
autocrop).

Mine are all 16:9 natively

I will be comparing mencoder, especially as you report very good speed.
Thanks.

Thanks, but I do have a reason for wanting to know how this can be
done specifically without running setup. I could give you more

Ben - and all - I have now posted another topic, "Modifying the D1

which explains my reason for needing to know this. Perhaps anyone else
reading this topic may also like to refer to that topic, as it explains

[mythtv-users] Modifying the D1 Home Media Centre to use a tv_grab script

2005-11-26 Thread Ralph

Calling all users of the Development One (D1) Home Media Centre (HMC)...
A forum for HMC users (and any others who may be able to assist us!)
has been established here:
http://www.dumbmonkey.atomhosting.info/hmc/

This has been set up primarily to discuss how the HMC may be modified
to receive Electronic Program Guide (EPG) data for Pay TV channels,
now that D1 has stopped providing this data, per their email to
registered users of 20th October 2005.

For the benefit of those who might be affected, or who can assist us
with their technical wisdom, here is the story so far...

Q1: What is the HMC?
A1: It's an off-the-shelf MythTV box designed for use solely in
Australia. Find out more here: www.hmc.com.au

Q2: What's so good about it?
A2: It actually works, straight out of the box. It comes with its own
remote control. It comes with an infra-red transmitter to
automatically control channel changing on any Pay TV Set Top Unit
(STU) currently available in Australia including Foxtel, Optus &
Austar, both Digital & Analog models. D1's own EPG covers all Free To
Air (FTA) channels in Australia, and up until recently it also
covered all Pay TV channels as well. (Even Foxtel's own EPG doesn't
cover FTA channels 7 or 10, for legal reasons - but the HMC's does.)

Q3: So what's the problem?
A3: D1 is no longer providing EPG data for any Pay TV channels
(probably for legal and other reasons). This will not affect users
who are only receiving FTA broadcasts, either digital or analog. But
it affects all users who have a Pay TV STU connected to their HMC.

Q4: What's the solution?
A4: Reprogram the HMC to use an EPG other than that which D1 has
programmed it to use. (The obvious choice would be to use the
www.tvguide.org.au EPG.)

Q5: Well, what's so hard about that then?
A5: The HMC's version of MythTV was rewritten solely for use with
D1's EPG. There is no 'mythtv-setup' because there is no need to
configure any hardware or software. There is no tv_grab script
either, because mythfilldatabase was re-written to directly access
D1's own EPG at http://d1.com.au/D1xmltv.asmx So some 'backwards'
development work needs to be done in order for the HMC to use a
standard version of mythfilldatabase and a tv_grab_au script.

Q6: Hmm, tricky...so how far have you got with this?
A6: With the assistance of many of you :) I have tried a lot of
things, eg. using the version of mythfilldatabase from MythTV 0.14
(results in a core dump, maybe because there are other
modules/dependencies that also need to be changed?); I have installed
KnoppMyth to see if I can work out what actually happens when you
select a particular tv_grab script (eg. perhaps it writes a value in
mythconverg somewhere?) in the hope of emulating this on the HMC; but
so far, no luck.

Q7: Crikey! Why don't you just give up and use KnoppMyth then?
A7: Mainly because I don't like to give up...but I have also
installed KnoppMyth, and I do have issues such as no audio, and of
course no channel-changing on the STU, which the HMC accomplishes so well!

Q8: Have you asked D1 for help?
A8: Yes. They are very helpful to their customers with regard to any
operational issues, but unfortunately they can't assist with advising
on modifying the unit in this particular way.

So, if you are affected and would like to discuss possible solutions,
or even if you're not affected but can help with any suggestions,
please let me know, either by replying to this post, or directly to
me; or hopefully by posting to the forum at
http://www.dumbmonkey.atomhosting.info/hmc/

Please note: I did not set up the forum, and there is an error in the
signup process. In order to activate your account you may receive an
email which says something similar to the following:

"Your account is currently marked as being inactive, to activate your
account please go to the following link...
http://signup.php?activate.6.92472380bd26471fdac0fd6e3260bb7c";

That URL is not syntactically correct. In the above case, the correct
URL to enter into your browser would actually be:
"http://www.dumbmonkey.atomhosting.info/hmc/signup.php?activate.6.92472380bd26471fdac0fd6e3260bb7c";

ie. between the "http://" and the "signup", you'll need to paste
"www.dumbmonkey.atomhosting.info/hmc/"; (unless this glitch has been
fixed by the webmaster by the time you sign up).

TIA!!

Don't know what is PVR150 remote but I have PVR500MCE remote with
"windows" key and it was very easy to remove it. This is only key that is
not made of rubber but some plastic glass. If you open remote, then you

Re: [mythtv-users] Running Mythtv-setup without X

2005-11-26 Thread Pascal Favre

At the minimum the mythtv-setup program is linked against the X11 libraries.
When shared linked, X11 has to be installed on your server. This can be checked
with ldd; see below for output.
Statically linked: you needed a server with X11 installed. After that you
transfer it to server without X.

Running mythtv-setup remotely will work .

You don't need to have X installed on your backend. I don't on mine.
What you need is an X server on your PC such as Xmanager from
NetSarang (www.xmanager.com for 30 day free trial) and combine is with
SSH with X forwarding.

When you configure xstart to connect to the MBE choose ssh and an
execution command of "/usr/X11R6/bin/xterm -ls -display $DISPLAY".
You will then get a little xterm terminal window and in that you can
run mythtv-setup. It takes a while to load over wifi network but it
works fine.

Try cygwin on a pc. Install the xorg, ssh packages. There is no trial
period, http://www.cygwin.com/setup.exe

[mythtv-users] Nuvexport honorcutlist doesn't cut correctly.

2005-11-26 Thread Greg Grotsky
I'm trying to use nuvexport to archive some recordings and I am very
close to having a method down.  I've run into a snag...

I adjusted the cutpoints manually within mythtv so that they are right
at the commercial breaks.  Then when I run nuvexport and use the
cut commercials option it's not cutting on the boundry I gave it.
I don't think it's on the boundry that mythtv found either.  It
seems that one of the commercial start break is about 20 seconds early
but the end of the break looks to be very close to where it should
be.  Is there someway to make it more accurate? :)

Thanks,
-Greg

I used to think about doing that, but with 'Sky' remotes. There are
probably some solvents that can dissolve the inks they use in the
production process, but using them you'd run the risk of taking all the
paint off the remote.

The best way to do it would probably be to strip everything off the
remote casing and get it re-done. The only problem with that is that
it's going to be relatively expensive :-(

It works fine outside of myth using irw: the button presses are

Is that what it could be?

Can you have multiple remotes operating on the different cards? I
don't see how that would work inside of myth.

Maybe you can only assign one card for livetv? If so, how?

thanks for any pointers!

I'm not sure of your issue specifically, but to answer your questions
about remotes, the remote has nothing to do with the card
specifically. Your PVR-250 capture card is really 2 devices to Myth,
a video device (/dev/video(0|1)) and an LIRC device (the IR receiver
part). As long as LIRC is able to communicate with the remote it
should work. That being said, double check your ~/.mythtv/lircrc file
which is the one that MythTV uses if you are set up for native LIRC
support. It could be, for whatever reason, that you have your
~/.lircrc file which LIRC by default uses set up right, but are
missing the entries in ~/.mythtv/lircrc which Myth uses.

Thanks for the msg.
The remote worked fine before with the PVR-250. It's only when I put the
HD3000 in and started myth that Mythtv didn't recognize it.
As I said, irw indicates that lirc is working fine. So, I don't know why
it won't change channels, select, etc.

[mythtv-users] Question about myth v ideo

2005-11-26 Thread Mat Kyne
I was wondering if this is possible. I usualy edit and transcode my
recordings from HDTV to XviD. After I do this I store my shows in varoius
folders - sorted by show - in the myth video default directory so that I can
watch them again and store them untli the season is over, and then burned to
dvd. I like to view my videos in gallery mode, but when I navigate to a
folder I get a picture of a manilla folder. Is there a way to have myth
video show an image for a directory? Maybe something like folder.jpg stored
in the directory? I know nothing about coding, and very little about Linux,
but I have seen this feature in other programs and i was wondering if it is
possible in Myth. Thanks -Mat
