[mythtv-users] Play Audio/Video Backwards

2005-11-16 Thread Geoff Scott
So I watch Lost. There's a character on Lost, Walt, who has started
to talk backwards. I was wondering if Myth has a way to play the
video/audio backwards so I don't have to go surf to some fan site to
figure out what he said. I like being able to slow down the
recording, or speed it up, but reversing it would be... well, pretty
cool.

All the same, some info has been added on the home page of the site so
that people can quickly understand what is being offered. More
information is usually not a bad thing... right?

I'd also like to take this opportunity to let everyone know that the
torrent for v1.4 is up and running, so now you can d/l via HTTP or BT.
 Users choice.

I'll also ask that if you go the BT route, pretty please with a cherry
on top, can you leave your client open.

As always, feedback (both positive and negative) are welcomed. Please
post those comments on the forums at g-ding.tv.

Say I subscribe, and living in the US, the only reason I would is for
the "voting" ability since I'm fine with the themes out there now
(thanks Myxer!) and get the same program info for free. Anyway,
what's to say the things I want to get funded... get funded? How does
the list that we vote on get populated? Does LxM Suite decide on the
ideas proposed and generate a short list? How much of my money goes
into the "pay for dev" program? Surely it's not 100%, since LxM Suite
is not a charity.

The only thing that makes sense to me to pay for going forward, other
than the voting thing, is actual data, like your podcast idea or some
super-duper program info on steroids, or a better interface to
manipulate my channel lineup, or heck, even a channel icon for each
and every channel I have.

I can't see paying for themes, there's so many out there.

All that being said, I'm very happy that LxM Suite is throwing the
code back. I wouldn't even consider subscribing if that wasn't the
case.

I think Dennis left out some "juicy" tidbits. This distro comes with
MythBurn, MythStreamTV, and MythStream (I think it was both
MythStreamTV and MythStream, Dennis...?). I don't' remember if there
were other plugins, but I thought I would mention this since for me,
an RPM based install of MythBurn is worth a fair amount (to me
anyway).

I recently setup a mvpmc box and built a MythTV combo box (FE and BE)

Given that I hate to see people pull out there hair, and I don't like
pulling my own hair out, I thought I would see how far you have gone
on the MVPMC setup. I'm all the way there, except each time I go to
view recordings, the MVP says it's lost it's connection to MythTV.

I've had to go the NFS route too, since it seems there's a protocol
mis-match on the MVPMC and my backend (0.18.1).

Anyway, I'd be happy to compare notes.

Well, I've also been working on the MediaMVP. I've been able to get
dchcp working, but my issues seem to be with the tftp server.

At any rate, you just need to create the dhcpd.conf file. I used the
sample file that was provided in the howto for the mvpmc. I edited it
to suit my needs, and dhcpd works fine for me. I did nothing with the
sample file in /etc/log.d/conf/services/.

I'm stuck at the "downloading software" part, so if you have any
suggestions if you get that part worked out, I'd sure appreciate it.

I'm using FC3, MythTV 0.18.1.

Yep! From memory, I looked in settings, captcard and some others that
are escaping me at the moment. I could not find anywhere a specific
frequency setting.

Oddly, my other machine which uses an older PVR-250 card (tuner type
2) never changes the frequency value. It always stays at 0.

Replying to myself...

I've done some more work on this, and it seems to me it's a MythTV
issue. I can't, for the life of me, get the Frequency to be anything
other than 884 (ivtvctl -a, look at "Frequency="). I finally did get
the /etc/rc.d/rc.local to set the frequency to 980 at boot, but as
soon as mythfrontend loads, it gets changed to 884.

I've tried changing all the settings I can think of, US-bcst,
US-cable, start on channel 2, start on channel 3, external tuner
channel 3, external tuner channel 4... and on and on...

No matter what I do (and yes, each time I run mythtv-setup I restart
the backend), I can not get Myth to use anything other than 884. I'm
starting to go a little mad.

Card is PVR-250, Tuner type 8. I've also tried stable and testing
ATRPMs for MythTV. Same behaviour for both.

Desperately seeking some suggestions...

[mythtv-users] Myth Setting Frequency of PVR-250 Wrongly... What's Going On?

2005-05-23 Thread Geoff Scott
I've been working on a box lately, following Jarod's guide. It is a
FC3 system running MythTV 0.18.1, and IVTV 0.3.x, built using Axel's
RPMs (with the "testing" rpms for ivtv, since I thought upgrading to
the newer ivtv would help me).

I boot up, fire up MythFrontend and go to live TV. I get some black
and white static bars and I get the sound fine. I was finally able to
get Live TV to work after I used the ptune.ui and setting the
"channel" to "3". After doing that, I could fire up Mythfrontend and
use LiveTV fine.

So, I wondered, what was going on.

I dumped the result of "ivtvctl -a" into a file after a boot, and when
Live TV would not work, and I did the same dump after I got live TV to
work. I then diffed them, at it appears that the only significant
difference was the setting for "Frequency".

On boot, the Frequency is set to 0. When MythTV fires up Live TV,
it's set to 884, which doesn't work. When I get Live TV working, the
Frequency is set to 980.

So, I thought I would dump a "/usr/bin ivtvctl -r 980" into
/etc/rc.d/rc.local to force it to set to 980 on boot. This didn't
work.

I looked everywhere I could think of that might have that 884
frequency. I scanned all through the database, but nothing popped out
to me. I don't know how/why MythTV is setting the tuner card
parameters.

I'm at a loss here as to what I need to do next. I've looked through
dmesg and all seems to be fine, I can post that if someone wants a
peak.

Frustrating, as this is the last "bug" on the box.

... and for those of you that know the show, yes, the "What's Going
On?" in the title is a Xandir reference from "Drawn Together".

There was a very, very long thread there about MythBurn, and you can
still get some of the pages in Google's cache, at least I could the
last time I tried.

The install.sh is built with KnoppMyth in mind. If you are running
KnoppMyth, you should be good to go. If you use another distro,
you'll have to edit some stuff in the install.sh script as well as a
few of the other scripts.

[mythtv-users] All Remote Connections To My Myth Box Eventually Die

2005-05-13 Thread Geoff Scott
Apologies if this is OT...

I recently upgraded to 0.18, was running 0.17. Myth is running on
FC2, ATRPMs. When I updated, I only update mythtv-suite, and not a
distro update.

MythTV is working fine... sort of. If I use MythWeb, VNC, or SSH, I
can establish a connection and use it without any problems for about 2
or 3 minutes... then it locks up, and the connection is terminated. I
thought this was solely a SSH problem, but fired up MythWeb, and was
using it for a bit, then it froze, and the connection was terminated.
Similar results with VNC.

Should I do a distro update? I'm worried I might break something. Is
this problem symptomatic of something specific you know about? I've
done nothing on this machine except upgrade MythTV.

Um, I don't see the part where they are "helping" to move things
forward. If the bounty system encourages devs to work on projects
which are then free for everyone, then yes, I see that. But if I need
to subscribe to get the latest and greatest feature, then how is this
different than LxM buying the devs?

I'm glad you put this in your email. Over the last year or so I've
come to give a lot of weight to the things Isaac says/does. He seems
to be a good bullsh!t killer. Thus, I would think, if he's involved,
there must be some good to the greater community... hopefully. Not
that he is required to look out for the community per se.

Did they build this or is this related to the recommendation plugin
that was devloped previously (and IIRC is being used by quite a few
people).

To be honest, $5.00 really doesn't sound like a lot to me... but I
can't help but wonder what kind of machine this will set in motion.
To quote the website, "LxMSuite puts you in the drivers seat: 100% of
the profits from the our pilot project will fund open source
development."... what happens after the pilot program? You can't be
giving 100% of your profits away forever... can you?

I couldn't help but notice this line from the web site FAQ: "LxMSuite
is a non-free subscription service..." Now that just sounds silly.
Call it what it is, a "fee based" service. What kind of double speak
is "non-free based...". Eee gads.

Indeed, this is a good point. However, it's one of those things that

I actually am doing this with my music, pictures, and video. I mount
the M$ shares (winvideo, winpictures, and winmusic) at boot with
commands in rc.local through Samba, as was suggested earlier in this
thread. They get mounted to directories in /mnt. I then can symlink
to them. I symlink mainly for videos, because when I rip a DVD, it
goes into the directory on the MythBox I specified for videos (/rip).
At least in prior versions of MythTV, you could not define mulitple
locations for videos, so I just put a symlink in my movie directory
(/rip) to the proper /mnt samba share... and I got everything in on
the MythVideo menu.

I could also bind mount (mount -o bind ) the M$ share into the
proper directory, but I'm lazy the way I have it set up now works fine
for me.

Works great.

Not that this will help too much, but I'm doing just this right now.

I've installed FC3 as a separate install in a new partition on my OS
drive (I have media on a second HD, and I know, that's where my
situation is different than many I'm sure). I then dumped the db on
the FC2 install. I then will be getting FC3 all ready for MythTV.
Then I will "restore" the db on the FC3 install. Then I will apt-get
MythTV. Tweak from there... then make the FC3 install the default

Well as long as we're talking about wishes here, I'd like to put in a
wish request for MythMusic control via MythWeb. I'd like to be able
to manage my songs, meta data, playlists, etc... from MythWeb. I find
trying to build playlists with my remote control in the living room is
clunky.

Again, to echo the parent, I take this all back if it can already be done.

To answer/address your general question:

MythBurn is what I use.

This was developed by spit2k1 over at http://mysettopbox.tv for use
with the KnoppMyth install. His work has been shoe horned into a
version for a Fedora box here http://g-ding.tv/?q=node/11

If there is anyone following this thread and is thinking that a
mountain is being made out of a mole hill, and won't be signing the
petition, I'd like to just point out one paragraph from the article:

"The members of the MythTV community, who now do not have to pay
monthly fees to rent set-top boxes or digital video recorders, have
plenty of more mischievous company in trying to outwit the television
industry. Millions of viewers are now watching illegal copies of
television programs - even full seasons copied from popular DVD's -
that are flitting about the Internet, thanks to other new programs
that allow users to upload and download the large files quickly. And
entrepreneurial souls are busily concocting even newer applications,
including one that searches the Internet for illegal copies of any
television shows you may desire and automatically downloads them to
your computer."

What the hell is the author thinking? We start this paragraph with a
statement about MythTV users not paying for "set-top boxes or digital
video recorders". The authors then walk from there, with one step, to
imply that we installed MythTV so that we could download illegal shows
to watch. WTF?

Okay, so I'll admit, I only skimmed the article the first time. I
just went back and read it and was appalled that the NYT could get is
so very wrong.

Anyway, please sign the petition. It's a small gesture, and may never
result in anything. But, in the spirit of Pedro, "If you sign the
petition, your wildest dreams will come true".

I recently moved to a new backend as well.

What I did was centered around three tables: record, recorded and
recrodedmarkup. From what I read, these were the most important
tables to get into the new system.

I used this command to dump each table:

mysqldump -u root -p mythconverg record > record.table.sql
mysqldump -u root -p mythconverg recorded > recorded.table.sql
mysqldump -u root -p mythconverg recordedmarkup > recordedmarkup.table.sql

(I suppose you could dump all three at once, but I wanted to look at
each of them..and I like to do things the hard way).

I then edited the dump files so that the only sql commands left were
the "INSERT into..." commands. I don't need the table building
commands because the tables are already there in the new backends database.

Now, when I tried to import those files into my new database, I got
an erro on the "recorded" table.

So I looked at the new table:
mysql -u root -p mythconverg
mysql> show columns from recorded;

and noticed that the rows lastmodified, filesize, stars,
previouslyshown, and originalairdate were all new in 0.16 (I was
coming from 0.15). The
defaults are NULL, 0, 0, 0, NULL respectively.

I simply added those five values to the end of every "INSERT into ..."
line that was in my recorded.table.sql file. Then the import went
fine.

[mythtv-users] OT: CableCard, MythTV, and the Future. Is there a Future?

2005-01-21 Thread Geoff Scott
Just reading about CableCard on /.

http://slashdot.org/articles/05/01/21/187212.shtml?tid=129

I was unaware of this interface prior to the article and the
discussion thread (grains of salt applied liberally) seems to imply
that with some work, our little MythTV boxs could some day control
digital STBs (and HD STBs) directly, including the ability to record
HD streams that are NOT OTA.

Any input on this?

I would guess the fine folks over at pcHDTV would have to build a HD
tuner card that plays nice with CableCard, perhaps allowing for the
actual card to be placed in the pcHDTV card for this to work.

Is this something I should follow with bated breath?

Ok, it's working, sort of ;) I won't go into the details of getting
it work because frankly I'm ashamed to (read that, "port forwarding of
port 8001 should go to the Myth Box, and not another box on the
network that isn't streaming a damn thing ;)" )

Anywho...

The "sort of" part is that I still can't start the stream from the web
interface. I have to push the command through the CLI. Wondering if
this is due to a permission problem? When the "Start Stream" button
is pushed, the window showing what is in the log file shows that "vlc"
is not a recognized command, like this:

Starting Stream of 1249_2005011816_20050118163000.nuv
/video/mythstreamtv/mythstreamtv.sh: line 37: vlc: command not found

I'm not sure which permission to tweak, if that's the problem. Any suggestions?

Btw, thanks all for the help. This is a very, very cool feature.

Okay, I installed mpeg2dec-devel and finally vlc compiled fine (thanks
a million James!).

Now, when I go to MythWeb, I set up a stream, I get this error message
from the log:

Starting Stream of 1249_2005011816_20050118163000.nuv

Hmm...odd. So I try a copy/paste of the mythstreamtv command that is
shown on the mythweb page into console. I get the following:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] mythstreamtv]# /video/mythstreamtv/mythstreamtv.sh
'WMV2' 'mp3' '256' '64' '.5' '30'

Seems like vlc is there. "which" finds it too.

I do not get a command prompt, so I open up WMP and connect. It says
the server is not responding.

I ^C out, and get:

signal 2 received, terminating vlc - do it again in case it gets stuck

Any clues on this?

I've been having a hell of a time getting VLC to compile. I've used
the ./configure options above (with the correct path for my ffmpeg

Alternatively you can use --disable-libmpeg2 to disable the libmpeg2

I can swear I have libmpeg2 on my system ...

I am under the assumption that the mpeg2dec package gives libmpeg2

/usr/lib/libmpeg2.so.0.0.0

I've tried to define a path to libmpeg2...

Can anyone help out this compiling newbie? Do I even need it, or can
I throw it out in the configure line...?

Egads, I'd love to use MythstreamTV.

As a postscript to this, a worm is hitting the phpBB forum software.
It uses google to find targets. pcHDTV.com was vulnerable because
google has them indexed (google search "powered by phpBB
site:pchdtv.com" to see how the worm found them). The "13" means it's
the 13th infection of that particular instance of the worm.

I also use RDP. One thing you might consider is changing the port
that RDP listens on

I suppose a connect scan would still pick it up, but a "lighter" scan

[mythtv-users] FC2 MythTV Install Script

2004-12-13 Thread Geoff Scott
For those that are interested, we have finished our testing and are
now offering a script that will install MythTV for you on a Fedora
Core 2 box.

The script can be found at http://G-Ding.tv/

The script will work on FC2 and *should* work on FC3. The FC1 portion
of the script will most likely not work. This script is based on the
work of Ryan Pisani with his FC1 install script as well as Jarod
Wilson's HowTo Guide . It has been tested several times, and seems to
be working well.

Please, if you have any comments, suggestions, or criticisms (even
flames) let us know. We hope to help making the installation of
MythTV as easy as possible.

Comments can be made at the website above. There is also a VERY small
forum there.

Geoff

PS - We were just finishing up our testing of the script when Ryan
posted to the list concerning the script. This is in no way meant to
take away from his work. We only took up the script as it appeared
that Ryan had stopped developing the script.

four or five new columns. I had to manually edit the sql dump from my

[mythtv-users] RE: Portland Oregon MUG (was: Free Drinks)

2004-12-08 Thread Geoff Scott
As Chris Petersen suggested, why don't we set up a MUG?

Well, I'm willing to see how far this goes. I have a little page set
up (I mean *very* little) for a Portland, OR MUG (would the acronym be
"PoOr MUG"?).

http://www.scottspot.net/

For those that are interested, shoot me an email. I guess we should
keep some of this traffic off of the list. I've already got a few
names, and we are slowly building a viable excuse to talk geek speak
and drink beer...always a good thing to do.

I've long thought about MUGs (Not the actual name, but the concept).
Any one in the Portland, Oregon area want to set up a time and place,
I'm game. I'll buy the first round for all you non-devs (devs still
get to drink on me though). How does Kennedy School sound? I guess I
should say reply off list, but come on...the title of this thread
should keep anyone remotely not interested far, far away.

Well if it's at that level of detail, if you dev (or for that matter
just want to gab about MythTV) and you are in Portland, Oregon...I've
got the drinks, you choose the watering hole.

I'll bite...I'm bored.

I believe it largely has to do with the Pro-Am movement, and the
beauty of open source.

Good ideas, good code, and a community that's willing to support
it...and you can go a long way.

I'll take this chance to thank all involved. Amazing, simply amazing.
If I ever meet any of you, you will most assuredly *not* be buying
any drinks on that night.

Re: [mythtv-users] [OT] Mailing Lists...

2004-12-06 Thread Geoff Scott
As an aside, Gmail has now made mailing lists my favorite. Please see
my sig below.

If you still want "mail" and don't want to be online, *some* accounts
are allowed to have POP access and forwarding, so you can just keep a
copy here at Gmail and send one directly to your email of choice, if
that's your bag.

Well, a good starting point is, once again, Jarod's guide. Go to
"Tips 'n' Tricks", scroll down to "Controlling an external cable/sat
box", and give the two links a read.

If your cable box has a serial port, you'll want to go that way,
otherwise you will have to use an IR Blaster (that's where LIRC will
come in).

[mythtv-users] Yet Another "No Sound Durring Live TV" Problem

2004-12-05 Thread Geoff Scott
List,

I've recently upgraded from 0.15.1 to 0.16 (as well as from FC1 to FC2).

My box is almost back to normal, save for one small detail, I have no
sound during live tv (and I've searched all over the
archives...nothing seems to "fit" right).

The recordings I have from when I ran 0.15.1 and FC1 have sound, and I
can hear it. I can not, however, change volume or mute it. Any live
TV or recordings do not have sound.

If I move the audio from the PVR-250's audio input over to my Sound
Blaster Live Line In, I get sound, but when watching Live TV, it is of
course 3 seconds or so ahead of the video.

I've followed Jarod's guide. I've made sure nothing is muted (using alsamixer).

I have my sound output set to /dev/dsp, I have my mixer set to
/dev/mixer and I have it set to control the PCM volume.

I've commenced with hair pulling, because I know it's something dumb.
