to have which work? Qt is a dependency of KDE, so it obviously can't

GNOME libraries, which include GTK+ .. it doesn't mean you're running
the whole GNOME Desktop, so don't worry as much about it taking up

On the other hand, if you'd rather stick to one major toolkit (Qt), you
can run XDM, which is part of X (it's the "X Desktop Manager") ... i
don't know if it is as flexible as GDM, i haven't used it in years ...
personally, i think i use KDM (mostly because my FE used to be a desktop

installed) ... it does require kdelibs, but again, it's not like you're

Keep in mind that compressing the whole DVD isn't the best choice as
sometimes you get 50% compression.  I did that with O Brother, Where

would make into an uncompressed ISO and drop on my backend.  Good
luck!

yeah, i'll prob strip all but one audio track and any extras to make as

extras and want them in Myth, they can always be ripped separately :)

for shame! no one else ever goes off-topic on this list ;)

OK, clearly this is why the frontend wasn't connecting. What I'm not
understanding out of this whole ordeal is why, when the frontend was
configured to connect to 192.168.1.2, which is within the IP wildcard
match, did mythtv convert this to gandalf and make life hard on
itself? (and me!) ;-) The only place Gandalf is mentioned, AFAIK, is
in /etc/hosts. It's not in Myth's configuration anywhere.

i'm not sure about this, either ... it was my first assumption, but
testing on my particular network showed that it worked with 192.168.0.%
when i didn't have an entry where Host = 'kryten%' (the hostname of my
remote frontend is kryten.slacknet.local) ... and without an entry where
Host = 'smeg%' (the hostname of my backend is smeg.slacknet.local) ...

So the last item then would be how to delete an entry from the table.
There's certainly a command for doing that so I'll find it, get stuff
cleaned up, and be left with this one little mystery about why it
insisted on using a name instead of an IP.

DELETE FROM [table_name] WHERE [condition];

depending on what you want to delete ... for deleting users, there are
other commands (tho' standard sql commands will work, since the users
table is nothing special, just another mysql table), and i'd reccommend
using them instead, because they delete stuff properly ... don't know
them offhand, tho' (i use phpmyadmin for all user management stuff)

Re: the off-list e-mail to me, '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' vs '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' is
what i meant when i talked about two mythtv users ... mysql sees (or can
see) connections from each ip address as a different user, depending on
how it's setup ... this is helpful, since you can make '[EMAIL PROTECTED]'
have a different password (and different access) than [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[anywhere_else] ...

So I *THINK* that the problem is not necessarily the mythconverg
database but just that mysql has stopped allowing me to access
mythconverg via the network. There are two reasons I can think of:

1) mysql is not bound to a network IP. I show below that both machines are:

yes, this part all looks ok

2) The mythconverg database does not have proper privleges granted for
network access. I don't know how to test this fully, but I seem to not
be able to access the Gandalf databse correctly as root to set them
again.

sort of ... it's actually the [EMAIL PROTECTED] user that doesn't ...

My setup on Gandlaf (which doesn't work) from /etc/mysql/my.cnf

# keep secure by default!
bind-address= 192.168.1.2
port= 3306
# this can make it even more secure:
#skip-networking

My setup from Dragonfly (which does work:

# keep secure by default!
bind-address= 192.168.1.55
port= 3306
# this can make it even more secure:
#skip-networking

Dragonfly is listening:

[snip]

So is Gandalf:

[snip]

exactly ... this is an authentication problem, not networking problem
... this is the proof that everything's working in #1 above ...

Up to this point everything is absolutely identical. I can access
mythconverge as mythtv on both systems AS LONG AS I do NOT bind it to
the network IP as I showed at the start of this email. I start
mythfrontend on Gandalf, and tell it to use the network address
192.168.1.2, it fails with messages about not being able to access the
database:

i'd setup the frontend on gandalf to access 127.0.0.1 regardless ...
when running on the local machine, it doesn't have the overhead of
accessing via tcp/ip ...

mysql> SELECT Host,User,Password FROM user;
+-++--+

+-++--+

this is pretty close to what i have in my table, but i don't have the
[EMAIL PROTECTED] ...

mysql> grant all on mythconverg.* to mythtv@"192.168.1.%" identified

ERROR 1047: Unknown command

in phpmyadmin, the command ended up being:

GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON mythconverg.* TO 'mythtv'@ '192.168.0.%';

my suggestion is to either install apache on the backend and install
phpmyadmin or use some other gui tool ... it's much easier to manage
users that way ... my job is php/mysql programming and we use the heck
out of phpmyadmin ... it's a great tool, especially when you don't know
(or in my case, can't remember) CLI mysql user management :P

but first, i'd concentrate on getting root working again, that will open

if mysql wasn't bound to the network, you wouldn't even get a response
... it'd just timeout, not give you a password error ...

As I said earlier it I hand edit
.mythtv/mysql.txt to use localhost instead of 192.168.1.2 then I can
connect and use MythTV:

does /sbin/ifconfig show that the machine is using 192.168.1.2? i'm
kinda confused ... are you running separate frontend/backend systems or
an all inclusive box?

this could also be from having two 'mythtv' users in the users table ...
[EMAIL PROTECTED] and [EMAIL PROTECTED] or [EMAIL PROTECTED] (ie: everywhere
else) ...

It is the right password. In this config I cannot connect:

DBHostName=192.168.1.2
#DBHostName=localhost
DBUserName=mythtv
DBPassword=mythtv
DBName=mythconverg
DBType=QMYSQL3

In this config I can:

#DBHostName=192.168.1.2
DBHostName=localhost
DBUserName=mythtv
DBPassword=mythtv
DBName=mythconverg
DBType=QMYSQL3

to me, this says that you either have two mythtv users (which is fine
and in many cases normal or preferrable) that each have their own
password, or that localhost != 192.168.1.2 and both localhost and
192.168.1.2 are running mysql w/ myth database stuff installed ,etc, etc
... i'm guessing it's probably the first (two mythtv users), since it's
more likely to happen ...

No, it's helpful. Possibly the problem is somehow the mysql database
is fine but the problem is mysql not binding/listening to the network.
That would require changing the grant privledges, I think, but I
cannot log in to do so anymore

if it was a problem bindging to a port, you wouldn't need mysql root
access, only root access to the machine itself ... you might be able to
run the following to see if it is setup to only bind locally:

grep 'skip-networking' /etc/rc.*

there are probably other ways to make it only bind locally, but the
--skip-networking option is the one i use ... to make it only bind
locally, you would have had to edit files to make it happen, so if you
never did that, it's probably not a binding issue :)

one thing you could do is this:

login however it takes as mythtv ... then, type the following:

USE mysql;
SELECT Host,User,Password FROM user;

it should then spit out a table something like this:
+-++--+
| Host| User   | Password |
+-++--+
| localhost   | root   | 316f3fab580678dd |
| smeg| root   |  |
| localhost   ||  |
| smeg||  |
| localhost   | mythtv | 0476fc026afffe24 |
| 192.168.0.% | mythtv | 0476fc026afffe24 |
+-++--+

check to make sure that if there are multiple rows where User ==
'mythtv' that the passwords are exactly the same ... this will at least
help explain that issue ... as far as re-gaining root access, someone
already posted the link that had instructions ...

Yes, I thought I read through that but didn't find a solution to this

The bad part is two days of no one being able to use it at all, at
least via the network. Myth is still working if you sit on the backend
machine itself.

can you sit at / ssh in to the remote frontend system and type:

mysql -u [myth] -p mythconverg

(where [myth] is the username you used, i can't rem the default) ... can
you connect that way? it may be that you have more than one myth user

have [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], etc) ...

anyway, i'm wanting to replace my ATI AIW 9600 non-pro in my myth
frontend with a non-capture video card (i really want the AIW in my
windows box, since parts of the card are going to waste currently) ...
i'm def on a budget, so not looking into the highest, most cutting-edge
nvidia cards, but i want something that will last me a while and is
comparable to the Radeon 9600 ...

i've got a transcoder already, so as long as it has a second vga-out,
i'm fine ... however, if it's supported, i could always use a
single-head vid card, since i've got my system's framebuffer support
configured so it outputs 480p, so my hdtv works as a monitor ... but,
i'm not sure if all the tv-related tweaks (hd timings, center mode
stuff, etc) are all supported on a single-vga card ... i'm wanting to
spend well under $100 ... anyone recommend any specific nvidia cards to
check out? not interested in gaming, so 3D performance means nothing to
me, only movie quality

Getronics doing sprint broadband installs and they were PICKY about
cable runs ... we used pictures of cox cable runs as examples of how not
to run cable!

on my house, they did a piss-poor job of running cable:
- they ran two cable (separate) runs around my house (sure, signal
quality-wise, no biggie, but cosmetically, it looks worse than the two
runs together would have)
- the cable was run TIGHT around the corner at nearly a 90deg angle (not
quite the "bends in the cable should be bigger than 10x the cable's
diameter)
- no "J" loops when entering the house (to make the water run off below
the entry point instead of possibly allowing water to follow the cable
inside the house)
- some entry points had bushings and silicone (proper), others had just
silicone .. others had just bushings ..
- for one connection, they spiced into an existing DirectTV run from the
previous owners .. it should have been removed and cox should have run
the entire run themselves and checked signal level
- on some places on the exterior of the house, the cable is just tucked
into nooks and crannies instead of being attached properly

needless to say, if you want a good job done, do it yourself, don't
trust cox techs to run your RG6 for you!! i would have gotten fired 10x

5.1 AC3 playback on DVD's or DVD rips - the volume control doesn't do

which means I have to get up again and unchange it when my video is
done playing, or whenever I just want to change the volume ( which is
very often ).

exactly! this is how it's supposed to work ... AC3 pass-through does
exactly that: passes through without being touched ... think line-out on
a stereo ... volume, EQ, etc don't effect it ... what i do on my system
is set the non-AC3 stuff to a decent volume (around 75%, iirc) and only
use my surround sound system's receiver to control the volume (i don't

[mythtv-users] OT: RG-6 crimping question

2005-05-19 Thread gLaNDix (Jesse Kaufman)
just bought a house and needed some info on running my own rg-6 cable
for my myth setup (and cable internet) ... i've had experience running
rg-6 (i used to do sprint broadband installs w/ getronics), but
unfortunately i didn't swipe one of the nice T&B snap-n-seal
crimper/stripper tools we used before i was laid off ;) ...

anyway, i have a tool similar to this:
http://www.radioshack.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=CTLG&product%5Fid=64-2984
at home that has a crimper for f-type crimp-on ends and can easily find
the crimp on ends that will work with it, but i wanted to know if this
tool will be "good enough" or if i should get something better ... i'd
*LOVE* to have this one:
http://www.hometech.com/tools/coax.html#TH-IT1000 but just can't justify
it for the few amount of times i'll be running RG-6 cable :(

any suggestions? will that crimper work? any tips on using a crimper
like that? i've also seen hex crimpers for fairly cheap, would they be
any better? i'd love a snap-n-seal, but i do'nt know anyone who has one
and it's just out of my price range for now :(

thanks!

yup, must have some kind of timeout and if they're pushed within that

Yeah, it should work. The bits at that end are part of the channel

 > Yeah. My reply was aimed at the OP. In your case, something different
is likely happening. I also use the ATI Remote Wonder for my system,
and I, too, am plagued by the remote's equivalent of "double-clicks."
In the case of the "mouse cursor" (which I use as buttons, not as a
mouse), I'm pretty certain the cause is its analog nature--i.e. I try to
hit down, but instead hit down|right-down|down, so the extra different
key means it's not a "multiple keypress."
hmm, not sure, i usually either don't use the "mouse cursor" or use it
as a mouse ...

As for the other buttons, I'm not sure what's happening. I'm starting
to think it may have something to do with the remote's only sending the
signal when the button is pressed firmly--meaning that if I press the
button enough for it to send and my finger wiggles enough to cause an
on-off-on, LIRC may detect that the timing is not right for a remote's
sending a repeat and assumes I just hit the button twice... Of course,
this is all conjecture with no evidence to support it, so...
that's what i thought, but i have done my best to be extremely careful
about how i press and it doesn't seem to make a difference ...
strangely, it seems that it most likely does it when the ending screen
is the shutdown screen ... and i can reproduce that quite often ...

and for me, it's only the power button that does it :S

Neither do I, but then again, I just recently upgraded to 0.7.0 final
and haven't had time to play with the new stuff, yet. So, maybe we both
should have it... I plan to play around with repeat, delay, and
min_repeat. I'll let you know if I improve things...
i did with some things (since my 4yo son was having a hell of a time
navigating the menus in Monsters, Inc. with the repeat rate too fast)

(BTW, did your 0.7.0pre lircd.conf stop working with 0.7.0 final? I had
to re-program my remote with irrecord because all the codes changed... ???)
not positive on that, but i *think* it did ... something about the
prefix, not the entire number, iirc, but i did that around the time of
changing from kernel-2.4.x to kernel-2.6.x ... will soon (hopefully) be
reinstalling that machine with gentoo instead, so i'll get to try a lot
of this stuff from scratch (well, obviously i'll back up settings, but i
may see if starting clean w/ lirc stuff helps my case any)

[mythtv-users] movies on data cd/dvd

2005-05-18 Thread gLaNDix (Jesse Kaufman)
iirc, in 0.16 or 0.17 the movies listed in the movie library were only
ones that were currently accessible to the system at the time of
entering the movie library...

ie:
- let's say UHF.avi and RedDwarf-S01E01.avi are burned on a CD.
- I insert that CD and either mount it manually, have automount take
care of it, whatever, it's mounted
- I go to the movie library and there i see RedDwarf-S01E01.avi and UHF.avi
- I do the IMDB search, update info, etc, etc, now i have metadata and
covers
- I unmount and eject cd
- On returning to the movie library, those movies no longer appear, BUT
on returning to the movie manager, they do appear (and i'm not prompted
to remove them like in 0.18)

Right now, I have tons of movies listed in the movie library that might
or might not be play-able at any given moment, but no way of knowing
that the UHF.avi movie listed requres me to put in a CD ...

is there any way to go back to the old way? am i missing something as
far as why the new way is better? before it was all automated and i
didn't have to do anything when i re-inserted the CD ... covers,
metadata and all were with the movies and it was really slick

thanks!

prog = mythtv
button = Power
config = Esc
end
as per http://lirc.org/html/configure.html#lircrc_format: The default

thus, lircd should be ignoring repeated keys ... strangely, the right
arrow (also on my remote) works flawlessly ... the entry for it is:

begin
prog = mythtv
button = Arrow_Right
repeat = 3
config = Right
end

You can identify such remotes by the fact that irrecord usually will add
a min_repeat field for this remote control to the lircd.conf config file.
i don't have that in my /etc/lircd.conf, but then again, it did say
"usually" ...

It does that for nearly all of the buttons with one very quick and light
press. Not too much of a problem since I have a decent repeat time in
my lircrc file, but when I hit the exit button sometimes it will take me
back two screens in the MythTV frontend. Any ideas why it might be
doing this?
seeing that in the output of irw is normal (based on testing i've done
with multiple remotes) ... iirc i read that some remotes do that,
assuming that one of the signals will be lost due to human error,
distance to receiver, blockage, etc ...

however, all the keys work fine for me *except* the exit button (i'm
using the ATI Remote Wonder with the Power button mapped to exit) ...
occasionally, it will skip past the main menu and go to the shutdown
screen when i hit power, as if i've hit it twice (but i didn't, and this
has been tested many, many times) ... not sure what's causing it, but it
is really annoying ... a workaround i've found is to use the left arrow
to go back a menu instead, which seems to work more reliably on my ATI

first C++ class) .. i hated it initially, but it came pretty quickly
(esp with cheat sheets we were handed the first day of class, which is
one thing I want to add more of on my website .. very quick ref for VI
type of thing) ... since then, i can't stand any other editor ... i can
edit things much faster in vi than anything else and use it as my only
editor for php/mysql programming ...

besides, i don't think it'd be much more of a jump from notepad.exe to
Vim than it would be from notepad.exe to emacs ... i could see pico
sooner than emacs ... but, that's one of the wonderful things about
linux ... use the one you like most (and then try to start flamewars
about it in e-mail groups .. j/k)

if you're interested, i have a very basic "intro to linux" section on my
website ... it's basically the notes i used when i taught a 15min
segment at the beginning of my novell service & support classes in
college ... (including a crash course on some vi[m] commands)

here's the uri for the intro to linux stuff:
http://lloydnet.org/?page=Documents/Linux/
here's the uri for some other vi[m] stuff i used for class:
http://lloydnet.org/?page=Documents/VI/
let me know if there are any mistakes, they were thrown together pretty
quickly and are definitely not perfect

I have this case too, and I also love it, except for one thing I

hmm, that i haven't had a problem with ... it runs much cooler than
other machines (i can't say how it ran in the old case, because i
upgraded the mobo with the case and the old one didn't have sensors)

I haven't added any extra fans over the standard ones it comes with.
Do you have any problems? Did you add any fans?
initially, yes ... i had to, because the dell only uses one case fan w/
a hood over the cpu ... so, i bought a cpu fan, small case fan (for the
back) and bottom fan (for the space just below the drive bays) ... this
was when i had my frontend and backend on the same box ... it ran well,
i'd say maybe slightly warm, but nothing outrageous ... then, i split
the backend to a different box, took out the bottom fan (tho' i'm
considering removing the back case fan, too, or doing something
different to help cut down on noise) and it runs quite a bit cooler than
before (5-10 degrees)... this is with only a small fan on the back by
the power supply, and the cpu fan ... psu is the stock one from dell,
but i'm wanting to upgrade to a silent psu ...

Maybe I need to try
shifting the cables around better. I find my two PVR-250s overheat and
hang the system after 20--30 minutes of recording. My 250s are the
ones without a heatsink or fan, maybe that's why.
could be ... i don't have much for hardware in mine since the
frontend/backend split ... 1 hdd, 1 dvd-rom, radeon 9600 non-pro, sblive
value ... that's pretty much it, the rest is onboard (ASUS something or
other, i can't recall model offhand) ... i also have rounded IDE cables
for all drives

So now I leave the cover off the case. Not nearly as attractive, but
much more stable.
yah, that's one of the reasons i bought the case! :) .. as you can see
in the picture, mine's tucked away in a entertainment center .. i have
more problems with my receiver (just above the htpc) overheating than i
do with the htpc and it's in a bigger compartment than the htpc ... got
my eye on a nice component rack at target to put my vcr, htpc and
receiver on, along with a separate stand for the tv...much more open for
better ventilation (and easier cable runs) ... just bought a house,
so unfortunately that'll be a while

I bought it and their silent power supply from
PCAlchemy(www.pcalchemy.com). I also went with a Samsung SpinPoint HD
and quiet Arctic Cooling CPU fan. The whole rig is very quiet. I'm
really happy with it.
i'm still using my stock Dell PSU and case fan, so it's definitely not
quiet (it was quieter in the dell, w/ all the plastic on the case), but
that wasn't the highest priority and will be taken care of later

actually, it has nothing to do with your bootloader. set the default
run level in /etc/inittab. i'm pretty sure run level 3 is standard for
console-only, as every distro i've touched uses this. they differ on
which one runs X (slack uses 4, most others use 5), but you should be
