Re: [mythtv-users] Hang ups after Changing from RecordingOnly to None

Thanks, good observation!

I'll give that a try tonight.

Oh yeah, since my MySQL server is on a different machine, it constantly
uses the network. Could explain why it hangs when requesting a
reschedule too. I've noticed several sleeping processes [1] on the
server too.

Thanks again,
  JJ

Try moving your capture card to another PCI slot to make sure it gets

Subject: [mythtv-users] Black and White

I’m getting black and white out of the SVideo output on my PVR-350.
The composite out is in color but I don’t want to use this.

This has always been a cabling problem on my 250. I shutdown, reseat,
and reboot, and it works fine until I rearrange things again. The
SVideo connectors on my card leave a lot to be desired. Since the luma
and chroma are separate signals in the plug, could be that your chroma
connection is bad.

Re: [mythtv-users] MythTv says all inputs in use but none are?

2005-02-03 Thread John Johnson
If you look in the Media Library / Watch Recordings and don't see
anything in the list as being recorded, make sure you are looking at
the All Programs group (Press M). Mine is set to come up in the Default
group view, which sometimes doesn't show what is being recorded, since
I have it assigned to other than the default group. For instance,
Desperate Housewives is assigned to my wife's group.

Re: [mythtv-users] smart package manager to replace apt/yum (was: GUI)

On Tuesday, February 01, 2005, at 05:35AM, Axel Thimm [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

In the long run smart will be the recommended package manager at
ATrpms.

First let me say that I appreciate the work you do Axel, as well as everyone
involved in this project, and this isn't meant to be anything negative toward
you. It's just one of my hot-button issues :-)

I just don't understand why it (software installation) can't be as easy as it
is on a Mac. On a Mac, in most cases, installing software consists of dragging
the application from the file you downloaded into the Applications folder.
That's it. To uninstall the application, you drag it from Applications into the
trashcan. There is no descent into dependency hell. No glibc-2.4.5.2-rh9-1.6
is needed by your kernel, if you upgrade to 2.4.5.2-rh9-1.7, the new
application will work, but your system won't boot the next time. And no, you
can't use 2.4.5.2-mdk-1.6, you have to have 2.4.5.2-rh9-1.6 Sure, sometimes
this can all be avoided by compiling from source, but that too is an advanced
exercise, subject to dependencies, and can take a very long time on older
hardware.

All this isn't particular to open source operating systems either. It can be
even worse on Windows, since you can't compile from source, and you must go off
FTPing some obscure driver or patch to fix your installation.

I certainly don't have an answer for this, do we statically link everything?
Perhaps make some sort of adapter libraries so that new libraries can mimic
older libraries and allow the older programs dependent on them to run?

Apt, yum, dselect and others go a long way to make this a less painful
experience, but they are a veil over the true problem. At times, it cannot be
avoided, and the hideous underlying monster shows through.

Thanks goodness for the dedicated people who package things up for us (ATrpms,
KnoppMyth, etc.) and save us most of the headaches of installing and upgrading
our systems.

  JJ

Re: [mythtv-users] Knoppmyth only for frontend?

2005-01-16 Thread John Johnson
You can fix you mythlink.sh file as documented on the KnoppMyth site,
then when browsing with SAMBA, go to the myth/pretty folder. There
you will find nice links to the cryptic .nuv files.

My solution came by accident when trying WinMyth out of curiosity.
(http://winmyth.sourceforge.net/) I wasn't able to use a WinMyth binary
due to the backend being a recent CVS (mismatched protocol version,
server=14, latest winmyth binary=13, etc).
However, per the WinMyth/DSMyth instructions, I installed the 3ivx
package (http://www.3ivx.com/, http://dsmyth.sourceforge.net/) .. which
allowed the windows box to play the MPEG4 encoded .nuv files.
Browsing the numeric files via Samba is ugly (as someone already
mentioned), so I tried MythWeb.
I added the server IP address and 'myth://' to line ~146 of
mythweb/themes/Default/recorded_programs.php:
echo 'a href=myth://10.0.0.123/mythweb/'.video_url() // snip
.. browse recorded, click the picture, windows media player launches
(because DSMyth's config has configured myth:// protocol).
** If your myth backend is 100+ days old (proto 13), you can stop
reading.
In my CVS build, I commented mythtv's proto checking (mainserver.cpp,
MainServer::HandleVersion) in a lame attempt to use the WinMyth binary.
It didn't work, for WinMyth.
The positive side effect was that DSMyth's latest binary is proto 13 as
well, and seems to work fine communicating to a proto=14 server for
FileTransfer. (Read: For it to work, you'll need to have matching
protocol versions, or comment as I have.)

Re: [mythtv-users] mythfilldatabase howto?

2005-01-16 Thread John Johnson
On your MythTV box, try running:
ps ax | grep mysql
You should see several processes of mysqld running.
If not, the mysqld daemon isn't started, try:
sudo /etc/init.d/mysql start
and look for errors, also check /var/log/mysql.log for errors:
sudo tail /var/log/mysql.log
If mysqld is running, try:
nmap localhost
you should see:
Starting nmap V. 2.54BETA31 ( www.insecure.org/nmap/ )
...
PortState Service
...
3306/tcpopenmysql
If so, try this:
mysql -umythtv -pmythtv mythconverg
you should get a mysql prompt.
Try:
show tables;
You should see a list of a lot of tables used by MythTV.
To exit do this:
\q
That should be a decent start on troubleshooting the problem.

mythv working very well. both watch tv and recording.
The three steps i did to install and run mythtv:
(1) run the ./setup for mythtv . When setup finishes it ask to run
mythfilldatabase to populate the channel. I have to IGNORE this
instruction
(2) run backend
(3) run front end
Setup the mythfilldatabase inside mythtv and waint until the following
day to populate the channels with information. Then everything OK

---
Here my questions.
(1) if I run mythfilldatabase
$ mythfilldatabase
It runs, it connects to DataDirect, it seems to get all the
information, then loops again and again and finally stop with error
that can not access

Can't connect to local MYSQL server through socket
./mysql/mysql.sock'
mysql.sock exist and if I change the permission.
chown -R mysql /var/lib/mysql
then reports a error in program.myi
The final result is that I have to reinstall the mc.sql and also
mythtv. So my approach is just to IGNORE to run mythfilldatabase
except within mythtv as I said before.

My questions: running
$ mythfilldatabase
is this correct? Or I am missing option/parameters?
(2) How can you run mythfilldatabase from outside of mythtv? How can I
refresh the channels from outside mythtv?.
In the mythtv manual there is a session in how to use the cron method.
Is this the ONLY other way to do it?.

In summary my impression is that running
$ mythfilldatabase without parameters is not correct (BTW --help did
not help me)

That there are only 2 ways to run it one is within mythtv like I am
doing it now and the other is with cron. Am I correct?

Any ideas, any instructions, any general statments may help me to
understand what I am doing with mythfilldatabase/mysql

I wouldn't recommend using acetone on anything. Use a high quality

I haven't had your specific problem, but here is more of a general
approach I might take. Check after each step. (Insert universal
disclaimer here.)

1) Is your power supply adequate? Somehow I doubt thats the issue,
but it might be worth a look.

2) Are the contacts dirty? A soft pencil eraser can sometimes be used
to clean them but make sure not to leave any of the crums on the
contacts. Alternatively a q-tip dipped in isopropyl alcohol or
acetone should work as well. Acetone is probably slightly preferable.
I don't think it leaves any kind of residue, but perhaps someone can
check me on that. You may want to clean all the cards you test with
in case it is some kind of wierd interference.

2) Reset to bios defaults. Make sure your settings are very
conservative.

3) Look to see if there is a bios update that might fix the problem.
Look both for updates to the motherboard and to the capture card.

4) Try with a different video card. You said you suspected that. I
recommend very simple cards for testing. Of course if your kernel is
setup to allow you to have a console on a serial port, a video card
might not be needed. Still thats a bit of a pain, and it really
doesn't solve the problem.

5) Take everything out of your system that is not essential for boot
up and try it.
6) Is your hard drive still connected or any drives? Keep
disconnecting them. Also take out all but one memory chip. Yes its
unlikely to help but sometimes you want to truly get to the basics.

7) Try underclocking the system if you can. By underclocking I mean
try to bring the pci bus below the 33Mhz that I think is the default.
Most are linked to the normal fsb so if you change that the others
follow.

8) If it still doesn't work after trying all that, well you've just
spent hours trying to get a low cost capture card to work, you may
want to consider buying a different card ;)

Re: [mythtv-users] AMD or Intel?

2005-01-15 Thread John Johnson
When comparing, don't be biased by AMD's (deceptive, IMO) model
numbers. I.e. if you compare a 2.2GHz intel and a 2200+ AMD, you will
be disappointed with the performance, since the AMD 2200+ is a 1.5GHz
processor.

I've never used AMD because of this practice. It seems Intel is getting
into this now with their part numbers, such as 520, 530, etc. The first
digit being 5 implies they are faster than AMD's models which begin
with 2 or 3.

[mythtv-users] Stuttering / tearing video in recordings - PVR-250, Celeron 500MHz

2005-01-13 Thread John Johnson
This is so close to working perfectly that it's already really cool. I
just have a couple of little things to clear up.
I am experiencing tearing frames and / or stuttering video in
recordings from my PVR-250.
My Default profile is:
480x480
Video:
	Codec: MPEG-2 Hardware Encoder
	Stream Stype: MPEG-2 PS
	Aspect Ratio: 4:3
	Bit Rate: 3000
	Max. Bit Rate: 4500
Audio:
	Code: MPEG-2 Hardware Encoder
	Sampling Rate: 32000
	Layer II
	Bitrate: 384Kbps
	Volume: 90%

I've grokked the archives, but most of what I've found is Mine doesn't
work. and the reply being Mine works fine.
Do you think increasing the Bit Rates for the video would help?
(Something I saw in the archive). Would changing the resolution to
720x480 help? (Being closer to native resolution)

I've attempted to recompile everything (Qt, LAME, MythTV, etc.) using
-march=i686 to get a little more
performance, but haven't been successful, as I get caught up in the
ELLL (Endless Linux Library Loop).

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

  JJ

Due to it's nice setting, transcode can use that much CPU. It isn't
supposed to affect other

If you are just using it on your local LAN to view content on your

the
dsmyth directshow filters to stream the video using the mythtv backend.
The only issue I would expect would be on some 802.11b networks,
depending
on how much traffic you have on it, or if you are talking about HDTV.
I
would expect far less CPU usage and better quality. Mythweb can
already
support dsmyth for a nice interface.

MythStream seem better suited to streaming your myth video over the

My condolences, I do feel your pain.
For what it's worth, I use PuTTY to hook up to my Myth box remotely.
I connect to my SmoothWall router on port 222.PuTTY (on Windows) is
setup to tunnel
port 80 to 192.168.1.x:80. On my laptop at the hotel, I then go to
http://localhost
and see my Myth box. This keeps it safe and secure on the green network,
but still allows me to use it remotely. This setup also works for ssh,
vnc, etc.
I imagine WinMyth would work too, but it crashed on me repeatedly, so I
went to bed :-)

have the

So now I have a web server but nothing to put on it... How about I
replicate
my mythweb interface on the web server realtime so I can see whats
going on
from work.. cool... So I hack up a little cgi script that looks like
so:

#!/bin/bash
cd /var/www/localhost/htdocs
/usr/bin/wget -r http://vector/mythtv/status.php -q
cat /var/www/localhost/htdocs/cgi-responses/mythtv-status.html
and boom, I can now see my mythtv status from outside without putting
the
machine on the internet, thats pretty cool, how about what I've
recorded, that
would be even cooler! so I hack up another cgi-script, but instead of
status.php I get recorded_programs.php, should work right??

Well, I attempt to access the cgi script and it looks like my network
connection goes down, I cant access the mythbox any more, wtf? It

Well I wake up this morning and look for the news and can't find it,
well I'll
look for something else to watch, then I look a little closer, the
listing has
changed, wtf?

Well my friends, I'll tell you WTF! remember yesterday when I ran
the
recorded programs version of the cgi script? well it seems wget
spidered the

realise that
the last link on every line is DELETE!!! Yes my friends, the script

[mythtv-users] PHP out of memory errors (solution)

2005-01-13 Thread John Johnson
If you get complaints of PHP running out of memory while using MythWeb,
you can
change the amount of memory PHP is allowed to use in the file:
/etc/php4/apache/php.ini

It defaults (KnoppMyth) to 8M. I changed it to 16M, then 24M, which
seems to be
working fine so far.

Oh, I agree it would be useful, but since you are going to personally
be there for the recording (ie. folks were thinking of it as a manaul
recording now) a simple visit to the tuner status page of mythweb or
mythtv will tell you that the tuners are free and for how long.
True. I've managed to do it as a manual recording by binding an aux
input to a bogus channel. It never quite worked the way I thought
it should, however. IIRC I couldn't watch that channel in livetv...
I could only set a manual recording and then watch it once it started.
 It was quite a PITA.

It's a hard choice actually. There is a push to make tools like
MythTV do everything -- and that's particularly important when
you put them in front of people who would find the suggestion of
running a video recording program or catting the /dev/video0 as out
of their experience. But no program can do everything, even all
your a/v needs, and so people prioritize.
Notice I'm not whining that it doesn't do it... merely suggesting
that it would be nice. If I had the time (stupid Ph.D!), I might
plink away at it, but right now I don't. Everyone has a priority on
what they think is most important.

That's the blessing/curse of open-source. You want it to everything.
 Fortunately, it's usually doable.

Re: [mythtv-users] Re: Removable media browser?

2005-01-03 Thread John Johnson
You could do this with irexec. Assign a button the would copy the file.
If there is a way to get the currently highlighted selection from the
frontend, it would be easy. If not, you could cook up something like
so:

Assume mplayer is currently playing the file, you have irexec run a
script something like so: (this is pseudo-code)

#!/bin/sh
CURRENT_FILE=`ps ax | grep mplayer | cut -d  -f10`# something
like that
cp $CURRENT_FILE /myth/video

As I said, that's pseudo-code. You'd have to adjust the -f10 parameter,
possible the -d parameter too.

This might not be what you want, but if you place a symlink of the
dvd in the video directory, and use submount to mount your dvd, then
whenever you insert a data dvd, cdrom or whatever, you will be able to
see them in the list of movies.
You will not be able to copy them to the HD, but you can watch them.

Basically, I have a whole bunch of data DVDs with various stuff
archived on them (shows, movies, clips, etc). Currently, I load them
onto my MythTV box by inserting them into my Mac and copying them over
the network. Of course, the WAF for this is very low. I would love to
be able to insert one of these DVDs in the drive of my Myth box and
navigate the directories to play the files directly from MythVideo.
 |
 | I haven't mentioned it as I assumed this functionality was hidden
somewhere and I just haven't found it.  ;-)
 |
 | If it were further possible to copy one of those files to the Myth

it would seriously lower the number of requests I get from my
girlfriend for tech support
 |

Re: [mythtv-users] Hard lockups when viewing Live TV or recorded TV PVR-250 ATI Radeon 7000.

2004-12-29 Thread John Johnson
After trying an ATI Radeon 9250, gatos drivers, ATI's own drivers, etc.
I finally solved the problem: I returned both cards and bought an
nVidia based card. This one:

It was also cheaper and had rebates.

Unfortunately all the time I wasted on the ATI cards is gone.

[mythtv-users] Lirc not working with PVR-250

2004-12-26 Thread John Johnson
I'm running KnoppMyth R4V5, and can't get even a twitch from the
remote. I can see it is emitting IR using my camcorder. I can
occasionally get output by using 'hexdump /dev/lirc' and pressing
remote buttons repeatedly. Can't get irw to print anything, just sits
there. Ran lircmd, no response to the remote in X. I have the grey
Hauppauge! remote. The number buttons are at the bottom, as are the
colored buttons.

I'm about to jump into recompiling lirc, but not sure if that will
help. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Regards,
  JJ
