[mythtv-users] New HDTV!! Have some questions about firewire capture and proper modeline...
My new Hitachi 55 HDT52 has a firewire port on it. In reading the documentation, it appears that the TV has the ability to record over this firewire port to an external device. I have looked through the forums a bit and I see a lot of discussion relating to capture from a digital cable box, but I was wondering if there is any way I can configure my Linux box/MythTV to capture over this firewire port directly? This is attractive to me since the TV has an onboard HD tuner and it'd be great to capture HD content straight over this port. Also, while I'm asking... does anyone know the appropriate modeline for this set? I've got an old GeForce2 DDR that has a DVI port on it that I'd like to use and was hoping it would be a somewhat painless update. Thank you for the help! To begin, I am a complete linux newb. I have setup Suse 10.0 and have a WinTV-PVR 150. I have successfully setup the ivtv 0.4.0 drivers and installed MythTV If I do an mplayer /dev/video0 itworks great! Good video, good audio. MythTV works almost perfectbackend works fine, program guide downloads correctly and I can play live tv without too many problems (a few channels seem to have no audio) Beyond the few channels without audio, here is the bizarre part. If I start to do a recording, the sound volume gets cut in half. If I run xawtv to adjust the capture card volume (trick I found from this forum!) I am able to properly adjust the volume back up for MythTV to record, but once I go back to normal TV (sound is at normal levels) then try and record again...the volume once again goes down. Can someone help me out and let me know the query that will allow me to get information on the next recording(s). It can be a query that will return all scheduled recordings. I can change it to fit. I'm not a dev, but I believe that mythbackend handles all the scheduling internally. You'll have to talk to the backend in a similar fashion that mythfrontend does (through tcp/ip ?) to retreive upcoming recordings. I am thinking of getting a Hauppauge PVR card to do the capture and encoding for my MythTV box. I have read the mailing list and have determined that I want to get either a PVR-150 or PVR-250. I am going to use a separate card for output to my TV. My question lies with the difference between the regular PVR-150 and PVR-250 versus the PVR-150MCE and PVR-250MCE. I know that the MCE is designed for M$, but can you also use the MCE cards in a linux environment? I like the fact that I can get FM functionality out of the 250MCE, but dont want to get it if that function will not work. Also, what are the main differences between getting a 250 versus a 150? My main mount point for storing video is /video. I've made a sub directory /video/mythvideo and set the ownership and permissions properly. I've set that directory as the source directory in the mythvideo settings. Dropped a few .avi's in there - nothing. I was under the impression that mythvideo would scan the directory on the fly and present the choices in the UI. The mythvideo README doesn't really have any info. I'm obviously missing something really simple Did you go into the Video Manager under Setup first? Do that and Myth will scan the directory and populate the database so that you can watch them. Do any of you have experience with this brand? Any pros or cons? Is it passively cooled, or does it have its own fan? I am assembling my first Myth box. At the moment my plan is to park a desktop PC in an existing closet behind the media center, so noise is not a big factor right now. But reliability is, so the fewer fans the better. And someday I might want to build a separate frontend. . . . Any thoughts on AGP vs. PCI, performance-wise? I have two HD-3000 ATSC tuners but my NTSC receiver ain't broke yet so I plan to view the output over Svideo until and unless the prices of HD displays come down some more. Any comments would be appreciated. I don't really have anything to help, I just wanted to point out that Compusa also has Hauppauge WinTV Go cards for $20 (after instant rebate, not mailin). The serial controller, unfortunately, does not let you bring lights down. If you ask it to set a given dimmer setting, it first makes the light full bright, then drops it down to the dimmer setting. So you can bring the lights down but only bring them full up fast. Different hardware is less restrictive. If anyone is interested in this sort of thing then I'm writing an automation server with which I'm planning to do pretty much everything people have asked for here. (Including integration with mythweb and myth itself at some point.) It's fully event based, written in C++ with embedded Python for scripting, and is GPL. It's still alpha at the moment and therefore unreleased, but it works in my house. Only does X10 at the moment, but plenty of other stuff planned. With all the talk of home automation/integration, don't forget about MisterHouse, http://misterhouse.sourceforge.net/. It's written in perl, and controls a variety of X10 devices. Might be a good place to look for ideas, or even wrap MisterHouse with the Myth menus and layout. I think it basically boils down to there is no decent tool to accomplish this, so as a result anyone that wants to record the hauppauge mpeg2 recordings to a dvd have to use avidemux, which never seems to work right and doesn't have a console-only mode for doing cutlists and simple multiplexing. I imagine a transcoder/multiplexer type utility would be a good project for a compilers course, since it's all about compiler efficiency when you can get a frame per second rate in the output - Jeff I second this. Yeah, I know, but it would be cool there were some kind of integrated screensaver/dashboard type functionality, so if you left Myth alone, you'd still be in Myth, but you wouldn't have to worry about burn-in. The TiVo implementation of this is to always go to Live TV if you don't hit a key for about 15 minutes, but there are some flaws with this approach. Anyhow, it's a wish list type feature. Burn-in can be prevented with your system screensaver. I have this real complicated method that I use to prevent burn-in.
