Re: [mythtv-users] Questions about Upcoming 0.19

2006-01-25 Thread Morten Rønseth

Gavin Haslett wrote:

  I was reading the change list published for the upcoming 0.19 upgrade and a few things occurred to me;

1. For the new LiveTV improvements, will it be possible to set the expiration of LiveTV recordings to, say, 4 hours? I know expiration is currently done on a daily basis, but to be honest I can't think of a single time when I'd want to retain a LiveTV recording for mor than 4 hours or so.

I second that!

2. Any thoughts on adding a checkbox to use "classic mode" LiveTV instead of the new version? I did a quick test on the SVN version about two weeks ago, and found that my disk subsystem was thrashing a lot more frequently than with 0.18. I presumed this was due to the LiveTV changes that occurred. Of course, this might just be my second Linux install on the box :)

I'd rather see the thrashing "fixed"...

3. Didn't get a chance to test this... but how well does XvMC work with the OSD and deinterlace? I know this is a bad combination in 0.18, but my video looks SOOO much better with kernel deint turned on, and it's a lot smoother with XvMC, so currently I just live with flickery OSD.

I have a fx5200 and OSD XvMC is smooth as silk.

Anyway, just brainfarts... it's too early in the AM (and pre-coffee) for any truly coherent thought :)

My best advice would be to upgrade to 0.4.{1, 2}. Be warned, though,
that the firmware is no longer in /lib/modules - rather consult your
system on firmware-loading and also read carefully through
ivtvdriver.org (especially http://ivtvdriver.org/index.php/Firmware).
In addition, there is now only a "Tuner" in myth & input numbering has
been changed since 0.4.0. (http://dl.ivtvdriver.org/ivtv/stable/ChangeLog).

Ok,

I figured some log data would be helpful (I hope), so here it is:

ivtv: START INIT IVTV
ivtv: version 0.4.1 (tagged release) loading
ivtv: Linux version: 2.6.12-12mdk 686 gcc-4.0

Have a look here "http://dl.ivtvdriver.org/ivtv/stable/ChangeLog". Last
line of 0.4.1 changes. The input numbering has changed from previous
versions :-)
Had me in a frenzy for a while.

Also, the best way to fix this is to dump the capture card settings and
start over. I found that if I left them in and just tried to change the
mappings, I ended up with extra mappings in the database and had to
manually remove the old ones before it would work as Myth would keep
picking up on the old entries.

Kevin

Oh, and with 0.4.1 there are no longer 2 Tuners (Tuner0 & Tuner1) -
just the one tuner, namely "Tuner".

[mythtv-users] mythfilldatabase hangs

2006-01-13 Thread Morten Rønseth
Hi all,

I've noticed the last few days that mythfilldatabase never gets beyond
trying to update icons.
The last message I see is "2006-01-13 13:05:40.982 Updating icons for
sourceid: 1" - and then nothing.
I'm running latest svn sources, fetching program info from
fredag.dagbladet.no (Norway) using "tv_grab_no".

Anybody else experiencing this?

I might just add that I imported the "channels" table vi phpMyAdmin,

[mythtv-users] Cannot record (anymore)

2006-01-08 Thread Morten Rønseth

Hi all,

I have a mythbox, Mandriva 2006, 1 x PVR-150, 1 x PVR-500, IVTV 0.4.0.

About a month ago the box crashed (badly) and I decided to rebuild from
scratch. It used to run Mandriva 2005 so I updated to 2006. I also
decided to create the MySQL database from scratch.
Lovely. Now, all seems to work fine on the box, except that any
recording I schedule (via mythweb) simply just never happen. I can watch
live TV, and the files appear in /var/video/mythtv as they should, no
sweat. But if I schedule, nothing gets recorded.
I just now did a schedule and this is what appeared in the back end log
(via mythweb):

1463 scheduler 2006-01-08 22:00:03 localhost Scheduled items
  Scheduled 2 items in 0.0 = 0.00 match + 0.01 place
1462 scheduler 2006-01-08 22:00:02 localhost Started recording
Anna Netrebko i Royal Albert Hall: channel 2 on cardid 1,
sourceid 1
1461 scheduler 2006-01-08 22:00:02 localhost Finished
recording Anna Netrebko i Royal Albert Hall: channel 2
1460 scheduler 2006-01-08 22:00:02 localhost Last message
repeated 1 timesScheduled items

No clue there for me.
The weird part is that the version I'm running used to work just fine on
my old 2005 installation (8239).

I've also tried to run 8519 but same happens there.

Does anybody have any knowledge of why I cannot record? Anything I've
missed in my Myth rebuild?

Any pointer greatly appreciated.

I know a lot of you are going to have difference opinions but which should

box to transfer my mythtv box into. The 2 cheapest PCI cards with S-Video
out I could find are the MX

000 and the 9200SE. From benchmarks I see the

9200SE is faster @ 3D but is it a pain to setup? I am currently running
a
FX5200 which is great at S-Video out. Overscan is definitely a plus.
Opinions? TIA

Hi Johnny,

I can't compare the two directly as I haven't tried an MX4000, but have
used Nvidia cards up to fairly recently, and tried most of them using composite
out to a 50Hz TV. The last machine I set up with TV out used an ATI 9200SE,
and I have to say I was very impressed by the clarity and stability of the
TV picture (using the proprietary drivers from ATI) into an ordinary 50Hz
TV. Unfortunately the box was stolen before I had the chance to finish setting
it up so I can't tell you more. I think it is true that Nvidia may be easier
to set up. I was still having trouble with screen resizing (using Xfree86
4.3) and 3D acceleration, but there was plenty of help available on the
net for these issues.

I know several people on the list have had trouble with ATI cards so this
is by no means a recommendation, but I wanted to share my positive experience.

Cheers

I tried setting up an Radeon 7000 card and gave up in the end. Info
on the net is plentiful but scarce when it comes down to specific
issues.
I now use an fx5200 which i love. nVidia has official linux drivers and
the card does xvmc, taking the load of the CPU when decoding the mpeg
stream. Also, it's cheap.
I use the card's vga output feeding a projector and the quality is
absolutely stunning.

Sure, you can speed it up (the following assumes you are using
ivtv). My box now takes on average 2 -3 secs, apart from when I press
"1" where myth waits to see if there is another keypressess before it
makes the switch (i.e. channels 10 - 19):

1. RAM. Get as much as you can carry, it's cheap
2. Latest version of the IVTV driver
3. Startup of ivtv: with "/sbin/modprobe ivtv mpg_buffers=8"

All in all this has done wonders for mwe.

Hope this helps.

Re: [mythtv-users] Success story: PVR-150, Mandrake 10.1

2005-07-05 Thread Morten Rønseth

Hi,

- DO NOT use the instructions in QuickSetup for modprobe.conf
modification. It may causes hard lockup of the OS when you run
"modprobe ivtv" later on. Instead enter this into your modprobe.conf:

alias char-major-81 videodev
alias char-major-81-0 ivtv

I've never had any of this in my modprobe.conf - and never had any
problems firing up the ivtv driver.

- curiously, /lib/modules/2.6.8.1-24mdkcustom/extra is created and new
modules are installed in this directory

To get around this, do:

perl -i.bak -p -e 's/(UTS_RELEASE "[^"]*)custom"/\1"/g'
/usr/src/linux/include/linux/version.h

perl -i.bak -p -e 's/(EXTRAVERSION.*mdk)custom/\1/g' /usr/src/linux/Makefile

This will save you the hassle of later having to copy the final driver
when upgrading :-)

- Mandrake ships with ivtv 0.1.x in
/lib/modules/2.6.8.1-24mdk/kernel/3rdparty/ivtv. I removed the
contents of this directory, because modprobe was using it. And I
copied the new ivtv 0.3.3k modules from
/lib/modules/2.6.8.1-24mdkcustom/extra to
/lib/modules/2.6.8.1-24mdk/kernel/3rdparty/ivtv

Also, get these files out of the way - they MIGHT give you trouble
further up the road:

/lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/media/video/msp3400.ko.gz
/lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/media/video/tuner.ko
/lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/media/video/tveeprom.ko
/lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/media/video/tda9887.ko.gz

Step 3) ivtv activation
You could just run "modprobe ivtv" but sometimes the /dev/video* files
are not created.

I've never seen that on my 10.1 box - running for almost 5 months
(sempron 1500 MHz).
All I need to do to get it going is "modprobe ivtv" (with a couple of
extra params :-)).

[mythtv-users] [OT] ALSA messup :-(

2005-06-30 Thread Morten Rønseth

Hi all,

I know this is a little off topic but I hope you guys can help anyway.
In my efforts to get the ATI Remote Wonder II remote to work on my Myth
box, I "cleaned" up my /etc/modprobe.conf. It seemed like a good idea at
the time, but in retrospect it was poor judgement. After restarting the
box I can get no sound... I use alsa 1.0.8 and used to have great sound.
My cleaning up consisted in moving parts of the lines around and making
it more intelligible.
Could anybody help me in getting the sound settings right? I tried to
put things back in order but it didn't do me any good.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Re: [mythtv-users] XvMC output not working

2005-05-23 Thread Morten Rønseth

Gavin,

Thanks, adding '"Option "XvmcUsesTextures" "true"' did the trick!
However, the frontend hung when I tried doing ff/rew (>3x) after having
initiated timestretch to 1.25x.
Also, I only get b/wh OSD, but I gather it's that way for everybody. The
OSD text is slightly jittery when playing back at normal speed,
timestretching seems to smooth that out.

Other than that xvmc works great on my fx5200 card.

Gavin Haslett wrote:

Yeah, what he said :)

Also, unless you turn it off by including;

Option "NoLogo" "true"

Then you'll get a big NVIDIA splash screen when you start X. If you
haven't specified this and aren't getting the splash screen then you're
not using the accelerated driver.

Make sure the driver line reads "nvidia" and not "nv" in your xf86config
or xorg.conf file. Also make sure you compiled myth after you installed
the drivers. That way it will use the correct libraries
(7174 as opposed to 7167 or 6629).

Double check you're using accelerated nvidia drivers, and make sure your

flaky on my motherboard due to what I suspect are DMA problems (will
report back on that after an upcoming mobo upgrade)

Hope this helps!

whatnot, and in the meantime I want it to keep buffering TV so I can
watch it later. Kind of like TiVo does, it always records something.

that might be nice, ie keep the livetv buffer full of the last channel watched
also with 2 tuners, the last 2 channels watched could be buffered
ie when you go channel up, it would actually go to the next channel on the
next tuner, then you could go back to the last channel and rewind!

would be pretty cool, but alas pretty useles for most ppl,
as most ppl don't watch livetv with mythtv

I regard myself as "most ppl" and I DO watch live TV with Myth.
I've been wanting this feature for some time now.

4) If I watch TV and send "record" command, it records from the
current time, losing the live buffer. Can I change this? (again, Tivo
does it: if I'm 10 minutes into the show and select to record, I get
the first 10 minutes into my recording).

i hate that too
there is a setting for "livetv buffer change warnings"
to workaround some related issues.

This also is something I'd love to see in Myth :-)

Thanks in advance,
Fedor

Is there a "feature request" channel where we could lobby for these

[mythtv-users] Best remote control

2005-05-16 Thread Morten Rønseth
Hi,
I'm about to purchase a remote for my mythbox and would welcome the
input from this community before I make a decision.
I would ideally like an RF remote, like the ATI Remote Wonder II. Does
anybody have any comments or preferences? Is it possible to just buy a
receiver and use a standard universal remote?

I have an nVidoa FX5200 card if it makes any difference.

[mythtv-users] Silly question (maybe)

Pardon me if this is trivial, but I haven't found an answer anywhere...
I want to switch channels when watching live-tv by pressing 0-9 on the

Re: [mythtv-users] pvr-500 prebuffer pause?

2005-04-13 Thread Morten Rønseth

Hi Mark,

First off, this is most likely an ivtv driver issue.
Secondly, ivtv-0.3.2q was no good for my 150 board, try to update (w is
the latest, works great).

I also had lots of problems when starting out, it turned out most of my
misery was due to the fact that the ivtv driver still isn't 100%
finished.

script (I also do a restart of the mythbackend on the next line, since
it seems to get run before rc.local). Works great.

After I overcame the nvidia driver issue, it was pretty much clear sailing

I just have to clean up some loose ends, like LIRC, and automatic startup,
and I think I'm set.

The one annoying problem I have now is that /dev/video0 is not
automatically set up when I boot up. It seems that if I modprobe ivtv, that
corrects it. I assume I can just toss something out into /etc/profile.d to
correct this, but I'm not sure that's the best solution. I'm open to
suggestions :)

Try the rc.sysinit patch on my website, it patches rc.sysinit to load up ivtv
right after udev starts on FC3 boxes.

1000kbit/sec 360x288 on my system, and it seems to do about 20 frames

This is a P4-2GHz.
Playback of the resulting file uses around 20-30%
So it is my experience that transcoding is not realtime on my PC, but
playback is. Recording from raw frames to MPEG4 might be easier on the

[mythtv-users] nVidia FX 5200, TV out and then some

2005-04-06 Thread Morten Rønseth
Hi all,
I yesterday received my NVidoa FX 5200 card and installed in my mythbox.
The box booted up with the "nv" driver so I had to make a quick stop
over at the nVidia wabsite for installer and instructions on how to
install the latest driver. 10 minutes later all was well :-)
Oh joy!

After wrestling with lame ATI cards for over a month I was delighted to
see that getting TV output was a doodle. Also, compiling mythtv with
XvMC enabled oncard assisted mpeg viewing!

But not all is well in nVidia land :-)
I found that:
- when pressing 'm' in view mode, I got a dodgy looking onscreen menu
(b/wh menu superimposed on the normal - but "jumpy" - colour image). The
whole TV image was constantly jumping/flickering for the duration of the
menu. The same happened when pressing 'i' (channel info). This does not
happen if I disable XvMC assisted mpeg playback in myth.

- when viewing TV on my 32" Sony widescreeen 100HZ TV (PAL), there was a
strange blue border to the left and at the top of the image. This was
only the case when actually viewing TV. This was not the case when
viewing TV on my CRT.

- pressing Alt+Ctl+F1 I switch to tty1, which with my old ATI Rage Pro
card worked well. Now, however, I get a strange "flashing" ascii
artwork-like "landscape". Looks like the b/wh console screen is totally
out of whack.

The first issue I believe might have something to do with my driver (I'm
using ivtv 0.3.2q, utilising a PVR-150). The other two could be due to
incorrectly configured screen/monitor settings in xorg.conf, I'll have
to experiment more with that later.

If anybody have any pointers or any comments whatsoever, I'd be glad to
hear from you.
I'm THIS close to getting the whole shebang to work, and I believe it
could be just a matter of tweaking configuration settings to get it working.

I'm running Mandrake 10.1, MythTV 0-17 (latest from cvs), nVidia driver
7174, ivtv-0.3.2q, PVR-150, nVidia FX 5200.

Cheers,

-Morten

  Hi Morten,

Here are the configuration files for the
two setups. Both have been installed following Jarod Wilsons guide.
My own MythTV runs on FC1 with MythTV 0.16
and the attachments modules.conf and XF86Config are from that PC.
The other MythTV runs on FC3 with MythTV
0.17 and the attachments modprobe.conf and xorg.conf are from that PC.

I do not remember all details in the files
but here are some comments:

  - XF86Config, Section Module: I added vnc
to be able of remote control the display. I also think that I added the
v4l line but I am not sure. I had to comment out the glx line.
Otherwise the system would freeze on startup. So no OpenGL acceleration
on that PC.
  - XF86Config, Section ServerFlags: I added
this section to turn the screen saver off
  - XF86Config, Section Monitor: I added the
"TVOutput" option. Some of the Options in the "Monitor" and "Device"
sections can be placed in either section.
  - XF86Config, Section Device: I changed the
driver to "nvidia" and downloaded it according to Jarods guide. It
works with the options "TVStandard", "TVOutFormat" and
"ConnectedMonitor", while I have not been able to make "RenderAccel"
(freezes the system) and "TVOverScan" work. Make sure that the TV is
connected when the PC is started even though you use the
"ConnectedMonitor".
  -
XF86Config, Section Screen: I added the option for the vnc passwordfile.
  -
modules.conf: There is an alias for the nvidia driver. I am not sure
that I added that, so probably the installation did that automatically.

  -
xorg.conf, Section Module: Again I added vnc and v4l. This PC runs with
glx without problems.
  -
xorg.conf, Section ServerFlags: Added to turn screen saver off.
  -
xorg.conf, Section Device: Again the driver is "nvidia" and I use the
options "TVStandard", "TVOutFormat" and "ConnectedMonitor". Note that
this PC uses a FX5200 with both composite and S-Video connectors. Both
are used, one goes to the main TV, while the other goes via a VHS to
three other TVs. I am not sure that the "TVOutFormat" has any effect.
Apparently the board detects which connectors are used during startup
and uses only those.
  -
xorg.conf, Section Screen: Again the vnc password file.
  -
modprobe.conf: Again an alias for the nvidia kernel module.

  I also
turned off the screen saver a couple of places in the window managers
and in the BIOS of the PCs.

  Best
regards
  Niels

Re: [mythtv-users] Can't get Frontend .app to run on my powerbook

2005-03-30 Thread Morten Rønseth

First thing, the application should show up as MythFrontend.app
sans the ".app" extension- if it does not, there is something wrong.
Secondly, no, it does not come with a database. The Mac frontend is
just that - a frontend. Upon first startup you should see the familiar
mythtvsetup (mythtv-0.17/setup/setup) screen which takes you through
configuring mythtv. If not, I reommend you try checking your hard drive
using Disk Warrior (boot from CD). If all is OK, try to log in as a
fresh user and start the MythFrontend. If the problem persists, backup,
reinstall OSX and try again.

but now I was thinking I'd try and get the frontend working on my
PowerBook G4. The main reason for this is because I'd like to do some
video editing (setting the cut points) from my couch using a real
keyboard as opposed to trying to do it all with a remote control.

So I downloaded the MythFrontend.app (version 0.17 + plug-ins) but when
I double click the app, I get a blue squares screen and then it closes.
In the console I get the following:

2005-03-30 12:22:21.711 Using runtime prefix =
/Applications/MythFrontend.app/Contents/Resources

2005-03-30 12:22:23.237 Unable to connect to database!

2005-03-30 12:22:23.237 Driver error was [1/1045]:

QMYSQL3: Unable to connect

Database error was:

Access denied for user: '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' (Using password: YES)

couldn't open db

2005-03-30 12:22:23.302 Switching to square mode (blue)

So, based on the above errors, does the frontend have a database of its
own? If so, does this mean it can't create it ? OR is the database on
the backend what is used, and I need to somehow configure the frontend
to point to the backends ip? If this is the case, where is the file I
need to modify to fix this?

I am running Mac OS X - 10.3.8

Re: [mythtv-users] Re: Weird error message - pls help

2005-03-30 Thread Morten Rønseth

Hi,

Have you run "mythfilldatabase --manual"? If that fails, how did you
install xmltv? using a package manager? If so, try compiling &
installing from source (it isn't very hard).

curl
http://switch.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/xmltv/xmltv-0.5.39.tar.bz2
| tar jx
  cd xmltv-0.5.39
  perl Makefile.PL
  make
  sudo make install

I had the same problem, which was due to an old version of xmltv being
installed. After upgrading I redid a complete mythtvsetup (or,
"mythtv-0.17/setup/setup"), then did "mythfilldatabase
--manual" and all was OK.

Your problem is that the xml file hasn't been created, probably due to
the fact that xmltv cannot for some reason get a  tv listing for your
country.

Cheers,

Hi

I keep on receiving the error message below every
time I try using mythfilldatabase.

Any help to fix this would be appreciated. In
particular, what is "me" that should be run with
the --configure option - mythfilldatabase does
not have such an option.

Many thanks in advance & br,
Esa

Re: [mythtv-users] RE: Filling mythbackend

2005-03-29 Thread Morten Rønseth

Hi Dan,

The first thing I tried was "mythfilldatabase --configure". It gave me
"illegal option: '--configure' (use --help)" so I tried running
"tv_grab_no --configure" instead, which generated the proper
"~/.xmltv/tv_grab_no.conf" file. Then I ran "tv_grab_no
--output ~/.mythtv/Channels.xmltv" to get the channel listing,
but when running mythfilldatabase after the command finished, it
complained about the file being in the wrong format :-(
So there I am.

Thanks anyway.

Cheers,

-Morten

Hi,

I'm trying to fill the myth database, but when I run "mythfilldatabase"
I get the following output:

config file /home/admin/.mythtv/Channels.xmltv does not exist, run
me with --configure

Now, if I run "tv_grab_no --configure" I successfully build the
".xmltv/tv_grab_no.conf" file, but that doesn't seem to affect
"/home/admin/.mythtv/Channels.xmltv" which of course still does not exist.

Can anybody tell me how this is supposed to work?

Personally I got it working by running "mythfilldatabase --configure", not
tv_grab directly, but I'm not sure whether that amounts to the same thing.

"Channels.xmltv" implies that, in your mythtvsetup program, you specified
the DVB source as "Channels" - mine, for example, I set up as "Terrestrial
TV" and therefore I get a "Terrestrial TV.xmltv" in the .mythtv
subdirectory.

Maybe by running tv_grab_no directly instead of via mythfilldatabase, it
didn't pull the right filename from the mythtv configuration?

I'm guestimating, of course ;]

Cheers,
Dan

[mythtv-users] What video-out card to use with Mandrake 10.1..?

2005-03-08 Thread Morten Rønseth
Hi,
I'm putting up MythTV on my Mandrake 10.1 box and I have a PVR150 card
working perfectly with ivtv-03-2d. I installed an ATI radeon 7000 card
for TV out but I'm having problems setting XFree86 up for dual headed
monitor with onboard video and the ATI card (looks like I have to
compile XFree86 myself, then install the ATI.2 drivers to get TV out for
the card to work).

What other cards with TV out do people have experience with that will
install without too much trouble?

Any pointers apprectaied.

Cheers,
-Morten

Re: [mythtv-users] what new card just works?

2005-02-20 Thread Morten Rønseth
Hi,
Is this "isn't suppoerted" business with the 150 card related to mythtv
or the ivtv driver? I know a lot of people have had problems getting the
various tuners on new 150's to work, but with a recent version of the
tuner module, they will eventually work.
I thought that once a card was well configured and working with the ivtv
driver, mythtv would support the card? Is that not so?

Cheers,
-Morten

Of course your having probs...the 150 isnt supported in mythtv now.
Doesnt work. Thought that as well known. Get a 250 or 350, they work
and are still available.
