I've noticed that as well some have some silvering inside the tube... The weird
thing is it doesn't seem to cover the digits... It's like it shows up on the
sides? I've seen other tubes where the entire inside is covered... Not even
silver colored metal build up but more like darker color.

2019-04-23 Thread Bill Notfaded
Crazy I think mine are all A's they don't have a pulled off nipple on top.
I'll take some pictures when I get back to Arizona I'm in Colorado until
Thursday. They have so many pins and tight next to each other I had hard
time testing them getting the pins from the tester on them. One thing I do
like about them is the tight grid. I was literally testing them this
weekend with Marcin's tube tester. They make nice clear digits due to the
small grid.

Well, really I meant the personal act of creation, not necessarily the end
result, such as a specific artifact. I think this is really orthogonal to
what you were saying about becoming obsessed with the tools, or in this
case, the nixie tubes themselves.

Of course, I am also obsessed with the tubes themselves...

Re: [neonixie-l] Universal Nixie Tube Tester - pro version

2019-04-23 Thread Paul Andrews
Well for me, part of the artistry is creating a device like this. In my own
case, I seem to have become obsessed with power supplies, having started
out being obsessed with nixie clocks. I am finally determined to bring a
six tube clock to life (I've done single tube clocks, four tube clocks, an
ITS1A clock, segment tube clocks etc.). Naturally, I have started with the
power supply, but I am determined to get past that phase. Currently I am
doing battle with the ESP32. But I digress.

@Marcin, may I suggest adding a one-tube-clock function? Or perhaps a 3V3
or 5V data-in function that would allow people to use your device on a
daily basis? Perhaps in the next iteration of this product?

I am going to be very very naughty here and perhaps play Devil’s advocate if I
may, for just a brief moment? Yes it is a wonderful project indeed, the
Universal Nixie Tube Tester - pro version™ - one to be admired greatly, but
I’ve seen similar things happen to people of all varieties, especially
photographers, painters and musicians. People start with an emotional/artistic
attraction to something. After a while they start collecting associated kit for
its own sake and instead of doing something artistic with it, they spend more
time messing with collecting/cleaning/testing/calibrating/documenting than they
do actually making something with the stuff they collected. I think it’s a
creative trap, but maybe creativity is low on some people’s to do list and we
need all sorts of attitudes.

My question is, once you find your tubes are all in tip-top condition or not,
what do you intend to do with them next?

I shall now run and hide behind the sofa to avoid the incoming brown and sticky
that will interface with my round and twirly, but please take this in the
quasi-humorous spirit it was intended.

Re: [neonixie-l] Re: Tube database?

2019-04-23 Thread 'John Rehwinkel' via neonixie-l
If it's stored as a table (spreadsheet style) or a database, it should be easy
enough to export the data in a simple format such as CSV. Backing up the CSV
all over the place isn't difficult, and it could be imported into a variety of
spreadsheet or database programs, or a search/mining utility could be written
simply enough.

I used to do this sort of thing all the time in XML, but XML is probably
overkill for this kind of data.

2019-04-23 Thread Nick
I'm well aware of the risks of data loss - that's why the group is backed
up multiple ways.

The main reason for using a Google integrated solution is convenience - the
hosting is there and so is access control - e.g. the library section is on
Google Drive but "knows" about Google Groups; the access rights granted in
neonixie-l automatically carry of to control access to the library section.

No disrespect, but anyone can go bust or withdraw a service, not just
Google. Bearing in mind that they've supported free groups pretty much
since they were founded, they're unlikely to go away any time soon.
However, even if they did, we have multiple mirrors...

Cheers

I'd be glad to host this on one of my company's web servers, which has a
10GbE link to multiple Internet providers (I think we peer with something
like 250 providers). The host is FreeBSD / Apache / mySQL / PHP and command
line / [S]FTP access would be available. Feel free to contact me off-list
if this is of interest.

Note that this is just the hosting - someone else needs to develop /
maintain the database and web app.
