[neonixie-l] Sync your clock using WiFi

2016-12-07 Thread Manuel Azevedo
Hi all!

A few months ago I developed, using the ESP8266, a device that would allow
GPS enabled Nixie Clocks (mainly PV Electronics, as those were the ones I
owned, but it is also compatible with Mr Nixie clocks and Nixie Clock Home)
to be synchronized using NTP.

My early prototypes, though working, could easily fry the sensible ESP8266
because there was no protection the TX pin.

After contacting several manufacturers, Jürgen Grau (Mr Nixie) helped me
develop the device to connect to the clocks.

After a few months of development, I'm proud to announce that this device
is now ready to be sold.

Ian Sparkes made an excellent review at
http://tubeclockdb.com/non-clocks/355-azevedo-nwts-build-and-review.html

If you're interested, you can grab yours at
https://www.tindie.com/products/Mazevedo/nwts-ntp-sync-over-wi-fi-for-nixie-clocks-kit/

Feel free to contact me with questions, suggestions or anything else.

Best regards,

Manuel Azevedo

Seemed obvious when I started to explore the GPS signal from PV Electronics

Never imagined that "this obvious" would land me in about 5 months to
develop one product.

Hope you guys like it!

Here you can find some information: http://www.155la3.ru/electroluminescent.htm

You should current limit them when using them as they will otherwise easily
have flash-overs, if driven the wrong way, destroying the segments and the tiny
wires connecting the elements inside the case.

I bought 4 of these last year on a whim because they are SO unusual
Problem is, electroluminescent displays have a rather short lifespan, on the
order of a few hundred hours. Not a good choice for a 24/7 clock.

They operate on low-frequency AC, on the order of a few hundred Hz. Basically,
the capacitive current energizes the phosphor material to emit visible light.
They *will not* operate on DC.
Also, you must not operate them on square-waves, as the high dv/dt will result
in excess current. I plan to use a triangular wave, which results in constant
current.
I discourage you from using 50/60Hz AC from the mains, as it would require
higher voltage to get illumination, which could cause breakdown

I measured the capacitance of my display units (posted below), and as expected,
larger segments have higher capacitance

It's another project on the long to-do list.

[neonixie-l] Re: In18 displaying cathode poisoning after 1000hrs or less.

2017-02-19 Thread Manuel Azevedo
Hi guys,

I also have a strange situation.
I have two Spectrums - a little older model (3 years ago) and one bought
last year.

On the older unit I had 6 tubes with 9003 markings (I assume March 1990,
but the order is reversed from the other tubes). Never had any problem with
this tubes.
On the newer unit I had 4 tubes with 0686 markings (I assume August 1986)
and 2 tubes 0982 (I assume August 1982 - coincidently these tubes are 3 or
4 mm taller than all the rest).

After running for a few months on the newer unit, I noticed on one of the
1982 tubes, that the digit 8 was starting to fade. Looked like cathode
poisoning, but I already had a 1984 tube with cathode poisoning on a Kosbo
1 digit clock, and it didn't quite look 100% the same.

I've replaced the tube with one of the old unit and after a few days, the
digit 8 showed again complete.

Put the tube back into the new unit and it was OK for a few months, until
on one tube the 8 was back again losing visibility and a 0 on another tube
was starting to fade in the bottom.

Yesterday I had enough - I replaced all the tubes between units and now all
are working OK without any "poison" symptoms.

I've noticed that the older unit's tubes seem to shine a little bit
brighter than the newer unit.

I guess that both units might not be delivering the same current, hence
these issues.

Regards,

Manuel

In the afternoon, I’ll check the new unit (metal case, hard to disassemble) and

[neonixie-l] Re: In18 displaying cathode poisoning after 1000hrs or less.

2017-02-19 Thread Manuel Azevedo

The old clock was/is set at 173.1V. The new one was at 168.5V.

So before testing, I did the following:

· Set both clocks to 173.1V without any tube attached
· Set both clocks to the exact same settings (tube dimming starts
at 3:00am, so no tube dimming during tests)
· Set both clocks to setup mode so we have the same digits lit “01
01 99”

At each clock, I measured the following:

   Older Newest
HV 173.1 173.1
R2 43.92 38.8
R3 39.137.1
R4 36.636.6
R5 35.237.2
R6 36.433.6
R7 35.636.9

My older clock seems to be a Rev5 clock, because on the documentation it
says 10k for R2-R7. However, Rev5 mentions R15 and both my clocks don’t
have R15. I don’t remember contacting Pete about R15, but it’s not there.
Don’t see it also on the schematics of Rev5 documentation.
The Rev6 documentation mentions R2-R7 with 8k2 and does not mention R15 at
all.

Conclusions so far:

   - The newest clock was set for 168.5V. This by itself should not be a
problem, I suppose, but I increased it to 173.1V
   - While testing both clocks, I used different power supplies than their
regular ones. One of them clearly had a problem: on the new clock, under
load I got on HV 145V… Clearly a bad power supply. When replacing with
another, both clocks had 173.1V when on load.
  - I’m going to replace the new clock with a better power supply
   - The “poisoned” tubes I moved to the old clock seem to be healing
   - I’ve also checked all my tubes have the giver at the base

I’m inclined to be believe that the switched power supply might not
behaving correctly. I’m replacing it on the new clock… Maybe that was the
problem...

I’ll assemble everything again and keep an eye on the clocks.

Re: [neonixie-l] Re: In18 displaying cathode poisoning after 1000hrs or less.

2017-05-08 Thread Manuel Azevedo
Just an update on this issue.

Indeed, it was a faulty power supply.

After I changed it in February, after this email, the clock did not show any
signs of improvement.

I did change it yet with another power supply somewhere in March, but the issue
maintained.

One of the digits started to show some discoloration and then parts of the
digits where completely off.
I healed it, but this time I swapped the power supplies from the old and the
new clock.
The clock was noticeably brighter and the healed tube had some discoloration,
but no dark spots.
Today, 1 day later, the tube is fully healed – no more discoloured spots. On
the old clock, the tubes seemed dimmer since then.

I measured the current drawn by each clock. The new one was drawing about 0.7A.
The old one 0.5A. They both have a nwts and a PIR sensor.

I replaced the power supply on the old clock with a more powerful one (and of a
better brand), and now both clocks are equally bright. The old one draws about
0.68A now.

It’s now clear that I was using a faulty power supply.

Can you determine (or measure) the current consumed by the nixes ? If it's a
direct-drive clock and the voltages you provided are measured across the anode
resistor (10K ?) the current is on the low-side, roughly 3.3 to 3.9mA. I
believe the IN-18 is spec'd for 4-6mA.

[neonixie-l] Numitron IV-19 socket

2017-06-25 Thread Manuel Azevedo
Hello,

Does anybody know what is the socket for the IV-19 Numitron?
In Dieter's database it says that's the PL-31a, but that's the one for the
IN-12 nixie. I have those sockets are they are very big for this tiny
numitron.
The IN-2 sockets are also too small.

Even if I cannot find the socket, it's difficult to find information on
this tiny tube, like the correct dimensions to make a PCB. Anybody got a
datasheet?

Thanks,

Manuel

I've made 'sockets' for IN-18, A-101, 5092, and b7971 with socket pins on a
PCB. Afterwards, a 'collar' is 3D-printed to surround and protect the pins and
make it look like a real socket.

Circular pinouts are easy; usually they are N pins uniformly distributed at
angles of 360/N, or N-1 pins distributed at 360/N degrees. Just use excel to
calculate the coordinates.

For random pin arrangements, it's tricky and requires careful measurements with
a digital caliper.

Making circular footprints in Eagle is even easier. There is a standard ULP

1( all dots are separated) type2 and type3.
Type 2 and type3 have combined segments depends on their vertical or horizontal

They have been used in “Электроника 7” clocks, which were very popular in
offices and factories in Soviet time.
I think IVLM1-1/7 Type1 were designed in similar manner to make dot matrix

I have blogged about the Elektronika 7 a few times. Those entries go into a
fair amount of detail about the clocks and the dot matrix tubes in them:
https://www.glaver.org/blog/?s=elektronika+clock

I don't know about the IV-25, but the IV-26 tubes start dimming pretty rapidly
after being on for some time. When first installed, the phosphor dots are
brighter under the filament. Within a day or two this changes to an even
illumination. After some thousands of hours, the dots start to be dimmer under
the filament, until they are almost not lit at all.

New tubes in left 2 digits, older tubes on right:

Re: [neonixie-l] Re: tubes/valves and Global Shipping

2017-08-20 Thread Manuel Azevedo
I got a refund, initially not complete, but after complaining about the whole
situation, Pitney Bowes, the GSP partner responsible for the destruction, did
refund me the total, together with an email saying why they destroyed it
("mercury levels") and that there was no way to open exceptions. My initial
email from ebay said only: "congratulations, you got a refund because the item
cannot be delivered".
After searching around, I got the impression, from several post of others that
got tubes destroyed by GSP, that Pitney Bowes sees the shinny getter surfaces
as an indication of mercury. The Apollo and RCA numitrons are known for their
beautiful shinny silver coating.
I'm not expecting an apology besides the standard text I got so far. I did
vigorously complain, but it got the strength of another "anonymous" email that
ebay/gsp get every other day: which is close to nothing, as they shield
themselves in airline safety.
I wish that magazines like Wired would pickup on these stories and would expose
how GSP is destroying these vintage pieces. I shudder to think that every time
someone orders some IN-18 out of the US (might happen!) they can be destroyed
this easily. And all could be easily done with some arbitration before
destroying the pieces.

Well, there’s a known vendor from the US that usually doesn’t ship abroad. One
day I found and bought some tubes from them. After a day or two, they refunded
the sale, said the tubes were in no good condition and relisted the tubes
without international shipping.
When I asked once, they said: “We aren’t allowed to ship abroad because of
shipping options”.
I never asked, but maybe it was something like this.
Well, I don’t really know, but I would hope that giving sellers some input on
how frustrated users will be because of GSP and maybe some of them will ship
using other carriers.
I still have two orders through GSP – one is stopped since the 21st in their
centre – I’m starting to think it will not go through.

The most ridiculous thing about all of this is that I also add some RCA/Apollo
2010 tubes, exactly the same brand and model, sent via GSP and they passed OK:
before and after they destroyed the package.

Also, as I mentioned, I had several packages going through GSP – the latest
story was an 8971 Burroughs tube that arrived in Switzerland and got lost. Two
weeks later seller asks me why did I return it – I said I didn’t, that GSP had
failed to deliver. We asked GSP to deliver the package – they took additional
1,5 weeks to answer and they refunded me. Seller as since put the tube again on
eBay and won’t sell for the same price I won the original auction… End result,
lost a tube again… At least this one was not destroyed.

Hi,

Like Jeff and Tomasz have said, having an underpowered PSU can cause this.
I had this issue with a PV IN-18. At the same time it didn't help that I
had two tubes that degassed at the same time, so troubleshooting took more
time.
If you haven't yet, try to buy a good power supply (don't order on eBay,
order from Amazon, Digikey or Mouser) with 2A minimum... And see if it
makes any difference.

[neonixie-l] Re: Panplex question, Sperry SP-33

2017-10-21 Thread Manuel Azevedo
I got 3 SP-352 yesterday, only one works 100%.
The other has all segments good, except one, that only shows half segment.
I wonder why?
The last one is completely empty - doesn't glow when using a plasma globe
next to it.
I've seen somewhere that new displays should have a shinny look - most of
the listings I found, the displays have that "old look", like burnt - this
also happens with my working display, so I wonder.
Still, they look awesome when lit.

RE: [neonixie-l] Re: Global Shipping Program disaster, need help

2017-12-08 Thread Manuel Azevedo
As I mentioned in another thread about GSP, they disposed 6 DA-2021 numitrons
because “they contained mercury”.
As someone pointed out, it was maybe the shinny getter on the glass, which
might have triggered a “oh my god, mercury” reaction, which made GSP dispose of
the tubes, which in this case are real lamps, as numitrons just have glowing
filaments, like ordinary light bulbs.
I was reimbursed, but I could never find numitrons again at that prce. It was
an excellent deal.

I've bought these displays with the idea of making a clock like this.
Very nice execution. Looks very nice.

2018-01-16 Thread Manuel Azevedo
Well, there still are some gas stations around here with these displays on the
pumps. They are quite noisy - enough to make you not have one in your bedroom,
even if it’s just a 4 digit one that only changes every minute. Imagine a 6
digit one... probably not even in an office.
Still, they look very cool!

[neonixie-l] Shady ZM568M listings

2018-04-22 Thread Manuel Azevedo
Hi guys,

Please pay attention to listings like this one:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/1x-nixie-tube-clock-Z5680M/163008809340

They can lead you to think it’s a sale of a full ZM568M clock, when they are
only selling one tube only.

Re: [neonixie-l] Re: Shady ZM568M listings

2018-04-22 Thread Manuel Azevedo
Nick and Bob

I just mentioned the listings look shady and they can lead to error (they led
to, in Bob’s case).

I saw the seller’s ratings and seems to be serious – but these listings are odd
at best.

I concede it could be a language issue, but there are all the signs for
ambiguity there, hence the alarm – unfortunately Bob was caught in it,
fortunately, no harm done.

Glad that nobody got scammed.

[neonixie-l] Comercial posts

2018-05-16 Thread Manuel Azevedo
Hi guys,

This discussion started in the Facebook page for Nixie clocks:

   - Should commercial posts be banned from the forum?

I'm asking the same question here - I know I'm new here and I've made some
posts regarding my device in the past. I'm no pro, but still, I'm selling
and making publicity for my device.

So far I haven't received any negative reaction from the community. I try
not to post regularly, but I believe some would be happy these posts don't
exist at all.

My questions to the group are:

   - Should commercial posts be banned?
   - If not banned, should a code of conduct exist?

I'd like to hear from you all.

Regards,

Manuel Azevedo
