Thanks to all who wrote in. Yeah, I guess mine is a winmodem after all.
Dammit all. It's quite new too!
It seems like all the PCI modems are winmodems? I wonder why...

Well, I'm off to buy an ISA modem, any suggestions?

Hmmm... I've never had such a problem, but I think it is a problem
with the mouse configuration. Probably you are using a 2 button mouse with
a 3 button protocol or viceversa.

I shall probably submit something on the configuration of the sound,
but I am yet to try by myself and see whether I can get the beast to
work. I get absolutely no sound from any audio CD.

Have you tried the sndconfig program?

To mount the floppy:

mount -t FS /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy

where FS is ext2 or fat (I suppose), depending on the filesystem you have
on the floppy disk. Of course you have to be root to do that.
If you want to be able to mount the disk as a normal user, you
have to add the following line to your /etc/fstab:

/dev/fd0 /mnt/floppyautosync,user,noauto,nosuid,nodev,unhide,rw 0 0

In my computer it seems to work perfectly, recognizing the filesystem you
have on the disk. Then, to mount the disk, you only have to digit:

mount /mnt/floppy

For the cdrom it is just the same. Add the following line in /etc/fstab:

/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdromauto user,noauto,nosuid,exec,nodev,ro 0 0

and then give the command:

mount /mnt/cdrom

If you use msdos floppies, probably the best thing for you is to
use the mtools: mcopy, mdir, etc

If you experience problems with auto configuration of filesystems,
let me know. ;-)

[newbie] Netscape mail/news host unknown

1999-03-04 Thread Ken

I finally got ppp working but now I can't get Netscape's email program to
work. I can browse the net with it though. When I enter my mail server in
the incoming and outcoming server fields it says "Host unknown". This is
strange since I can enter the servers in Kmail and it works fine. It's the
same for my news server too. I can't use the netscape reader because of
this.

When you mount your FAT32 partition you have to use the option
noexec of the mount command. See man mount for more information. If you
mount the partition using an entry in /etc/fstab, then you have to add the
noexec option in the 4th field of the entry. Something like:

/dev/hdXX /mnt/WinXX vfatdefaults,noexec,nodev 1 1

What do you mean by "they're treated like executables"? Are you able to
 install them?

It's possible that the permissions on the files are being munged because
you're putting them on a FAT32 partition that has no idea about file
permissions or ownership. I've noticed that when using my FAT32
partition under Linux all files are listed as executable.

I doubt that it's going to cause a problem for you, since even if you
ATTEMPTED to execute them nothing would happen. If it bothers you,
simply chmod them to be non-executable (chmod -x filename) and you're
 all set.

Are you downloading files as SOURCE or TEXT? I know
Netscape Communicator gives you the option, I forget if kfm does. This
owuld be the equivalent of GETting a .ZIP binary from an FTP with ASCII mode

[newbie] sendmail genericstable NOT working

1999-03-04 Thread Jacek Andreas Matulla

Hi all,

I have Mandrake 5.3 with sendmail-8.8.7-20 installed.
I want my From: headers changed, when the email is going out to the internet.

localuser1 [EMAIL PROTECTED]

As much as I know the genericstable feature is used for this. So I just used
the redhat.mc file and added some lines concerning the genericstable and
created a sendmail.cf with m4. I used makemap to create a hashed version of the
genericstable. Unfortunatly this does NOT work. I have no idea why.

That's the .mc file used:

divert(-1)
include(`/usr/lib/sendmail-cf/m4/cf.m4')
define(`confDEF_USER_ID',``8:12'')
define(`SMART_HOST',`provider's smtp server')
added
OSTYPE(`linux')
undefine(`UUCP_RELAY')
undefine(`BITNET_RELAY')
FEATURE(masquerade_envelope)
 added
FEATURE(genericstable, `hash -o /etc/genericstable') added
GENERICS_DOMAIN_FILE(`/etc/mail/genericsdomain') added

FEATURE(redirect)
FEATURE(always_add_domain)
FEATURE(use_cw_file)
FEATURE(local_procmail)
MAILER(procmail)
MAILER(local) added
MAILER(smtp)
HACK(check_mail3,`hash -a@JUNK /etc/mail/deny')
HACK(use_ip,`/etc/mail/ip_allow')
HACK(use_names,`/etc/mail/name_allow')
HACK(use_relayto,`/etc/mail/relay_allow')
HACK(check_rcpt4)
HACK(check_relay3)

With all this the From: headers are not changed by sendmail. The same settings
worked with RedHat 4.2. So I tried to start sendmail with -d option. The output
seems O.K., but the last lines say something like this:

rewrite: ruleset4input: root
rewrite: ruleset4 returns: root
root... Recipient names must be specified

What does the last line mean? Do I have to specify something? Waht can I do?

Please HELP. I can send the output of sendmail -d, too.

Thanx in advance

Jacek
