Cosa posso fare? Grazie
Re: [newbie] [Newbie] Linux for Windows??
I run Linux4Windows and I am happy with it. By comparison though it is nowhere as fast as a full Linux 7.2 installation on a dedicated parition. Currently, I have WindowsME on a 4GB drive and a slave with 30GB which I use for raw video, music, and still photos for my video editing hobby. I want Linux on its own drive but I am waiting after April, Taxman was very cruel to me. I haven't gotten a chance to try Linux with the Interent since I have a "winmodem" which Linux doesn't work with, with very few exceptions. When I can I will purchase an external "hardware" modem. For the most part since I run with 512MB RAM and Athlon 1GHz I really don't see much loss of speed compared to Windows but compared to Linux on its own partition well I do see a performance difference. Linux4Windows is good and if harddrive space is at a premium and you don't want to repartition it does the job.
Re: [newbie] DiskDrake w/ PartitionMagic
I seem to recall someone some time ago explaining that Partition Magic/System Commander etc use a "different" method for creating partitions and partition types, I can't be any more explicit because I don't understand it any more than that. However, I had a similar problem with a HD that had been partitioned using System Commander, I tried using DiskDrake to change the partition type, blank the entire partition table etc all to no avail - the type 85 partition kept "coming back". As I recall (it was some time ago now and memory fails I'm afraid) I used Linux fdisk to either change the partition type or deleted it and re-created the partitions that I wanted, then carried on with DiskDrake during an install. That is my rather vague recollection of events so if you try it you are on your own ! I can't add any more, and fdisk will destroy existing data so make sure you're backed up or have nothing that matters on the HD before you try. BTW Grub is not subject to the 1024 cylinder limit and for that matter the new version of Lilo is not either. On Tuesday 10 April 2001 15:23, you wrote: I'm finding it difficult to believe nobody has an opinion on this -- heck, nobody's even flamed me for a clueless newbie :) I recently installed Linux-Mandrake 7.2 on a machine that already had a single Windows Me partition on a 60G IBM hard drive. Although I'd already purchased a copy of PartitionMagic (v. 6.0) I wanted to put Mandrake through its paces, so I used DiskDrake to reduce the size of the FAT32 partition and to create my new Gnu/Linux partitions (1 swap, 3 ext2). After installing PartitionMagic I used it to split up my Windows partition (going from a single FAT32 partition to four FAT32 parti- tions). This worked fine. PartitionMagic doesn't see the Gnu/Linux partitions, however. It displays them as one big contiguous "Type 85" partition. Naturally I haven't tried doing anything with this via PM. Other than this, everything's working fine. Both the Me and Gnu/ Linux sides are booting (using Grub) and running properly -- but I *would* like to be able to manage my Gnu/Linux partitions with PM. I should point out that all of the Gnu/Linux stuff is at the end of the partition map, well beyond the 1024-cylinder frontier. Anyone know what might be going on? Thanks Mark Shaw

Re: [newbie] a little ppp question with kernel-2.4.3
Well, I seemed to have a found a workaround. I added some aliases to my modules.conf as suggested by a Mr. Mostert on expert list. Theres a little program called putty.exe that I use for SSH in windows and works greate for my small purposes. You can grab it at zappa.halden.net/pub allthough this box is sitting in Norway it should be a cuick download (148k) Andr = Original Message From [EMAIL PROTECTED] = you can shutdown with telnet log in as a user, su to root and then shutdown -r now - Original Message - From: "Tim Holmes" [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, April 06, 2001 1:02 PM Subject: Re: [newbie] Telnet vs SSH The difference is in security for the most part. There are some other perks to SSH that telnet does not allow. For example you could shut down a machine with the command: ssh -l root hostname.dns.com shutdown -h now Once you execute that command, it will ask you for the RSA key passcode and then log into that machine, execute that command and then log out. The machine will then shut down. This can't be done in telnet. And if it can, it's not done easily, I've tried the command and it won't allow it or look like there's a simple way to do that. [timh@r2d2 timh]$ ssh yoda uptime timh@yoda's password: 11:39am up 51 days, 11:44, 5 users, load average: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00 There's an example. There's also the security. With Telnet, you can't telnet in as root due to the fact that it sends a plain text passwd and it's not hard at all to catch those passwds. SSH sends a plain text key. The key has the passcode encrypted within that key. Windows comes with Telnet. And it's installed by default in Win98SE, and up. (If you actually disable networking, you install the telnet.exe to install the Windows networking.) Windows does now however have a SSH anything. I don't know if they ever will, and since they're recent statements about OpenSource, Linux and GPL, I doubt they will do something like that any time soon. There are plenty of applications you can buy or download as FREEware. Personally I like and use SecureCRT. Which can be coupled with a SFTP client. SecureCRT does suppor telnet. Hummingbird has a good suite for telnet, I believe it supports SSH, and it should connect to an X Server. However it's pricey. Last I heard it was like $700 or so. But there are other ways of getting software that will perform the task you need with out spending a dime, or with out spending an arm, a leg, and a knee cap! Hope that clears things up for you a little. tdh T. Re: [newbie] reading CDRW cd's
Sorry, I forgot a few points. The patch is for the older kernels that do not already have patch in there. All newer 2.4 kernels and 2.2 kernels should have it. In that case, its just turning it on in the config to compile it in the kernel. On Wed, 11 Apr 2001, Nima S. Hi, sorry if I ask a simple questions but I can't find a solutions anywhere. [newbie] Xemacs
I am using Xemacs 21.1 and would like to change the configuration of the keyboard so as to move around in - more or less - the same way I used to do under Win98, let's say. I am mainly refering to the arrows on the right end side of the keyboard and the combination shift+arrow and ctrl+shift+arrow. Apologies if the question sounds too simple or it's been discussed already on the list before, but I am being too slow in this way ... Thanks! Cheers, Giovanni
Re: [newbie] Linux hangs...
I'm not exactly sure what you're trying to say. If you're looking for a shortcut to kill locked jobs, there's a cute little skull and crossbones link on your desktop that you can use to kill dead or stuck windows should that occur (rare). Otherwise, you can kill a job in console. To find a job's pid, type: ps aux | grep JOBNAMEHERE Then: kill PIDNUMBER HERE On those rare times that something does lock up (Hello, wine), that's how I kill it and I'm good to go again. Otherwise, if you're hard drive is thrashing about and you run out of resources somehow independent of ANY OS or situation, you might have faulty or inadequate hardware. There are also a variety of cute little GUI tools to monitor your system resources in Linux. Note that Linux does not utilize memory and the like quite the same as Windows. So, don't panic if a lot of your memory is being used. That's a good thing. --- David Martland [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: OK - so I can get almost any OS to hang! With Windows NT and MacOS, I usually have to hit CTRL-ALT DEL or the RESET button. I think Linux perhaps doesn't technically crash, but it seems to become unusable if some programs are run. I suspect that what happens is that several programs get run, which use up system resouces, and eventually there are no, or very few, resources left. This probably results in some form of thrashing, probably involving the disk, and then progress is very slow. Of course, things will eventually clear, but who can wait that long? I find it amazing that there is no short cut way to regain control of the machine once this sort of behaviour sets in. So far I see no reason to believe that Linux is a major threat to other computer systems - for which I am rather sorry, as I don't like many of the competitor products. Some of the programs I have on my Linux machine are quite ingenious, and well worth tryingd Maybe next century someone will produce an operating system which will be worth having! [newbie] More Than One Printer
Hi there, I am wondering how does one setup more than one printer on a system. I have a HP610CL setup through my parallel port with NO problems, but I also have an HP1100 printer hooked up through a network card. How can I set it up also, plus how do I choose between the two. Re: [newbie] network printing
Okay, this one stumped me for a while too, I'm ashamed to say. Unfortunately, my situation seems to be a bit simpler than yours as it is on a home LAN with Win98 as the print server. But what I did was used the Samba web-based configurator under Network Configuration. Once I had Samba configured properly and running, I was able to easily add my Windows printer with kups. Of course, the Windows printer needed file and print sharing checked and the printer itself needed to be shared. I know that's probably not your situation, but hopefully it helps. I didn't try setting up any print services for Unix through Windows. If that's giving you grief, why don't you try just setting up Samba on your Linux box and using that to connect to Windows as I did. Specifically, you should need samba-client. It shouldn't be necessary for you to run a samba server on your Linux box if you don't want to. However, in my situation, I run both. Also note that the Cups documentation on http://www.mandrakeuser.org is indeed very thorough and quite helpful. --- Terry [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Can anyone help set up remote printing on a LM 7.2 machine running KDE 2.1.1 to be able to print to a networked printer in a windows 2000 environment? [newbie] Removing integrated soundcard
OK, here's the problem. I bought a Compaq Presario (I know, first mistake ;-))5834 about a year ago. Now way back then, I didn't know anything about the evils of integrated soundcards, vid cards, or anything else. By now I do, but I still am not sure what to do about this: I just bought a Soundblaster Live! Platinum 5.1, which absolutely rocks in Winbitesmyfatwhiteass, but doesn't work in Linux right now. Now, I believe theres a conflict, because when I disabled the stock integrated soundcard (with help from Compaq Tech Support), I did it from Safe Mode, not the BIOS. When I booted into Linux, Kudzu detected and configured the SB Live!, but when I look at Harddrake, I can see both the SB Live! and the old one (ESS Solo1 Audiodrive). And when Linux is booting up, I see it saying its starting sound module es1933 or something like that, which I believe is the ESS soundcard. Can anyone tell me what to do about this? Thanks! :-)

[newbie] Looking for RealPlayer 7 (Seven)
Dear friends: I recently installed the RealPlayer 8 .bin version for Linux. I also installed all the plugins and mimetypes (sh mimetypes.sh and sh plugins.sh). Everything installed perfectly. However, I've noticed problems with RealPlayer 8. The broadband screen is half the size it should be (and no zoom option is available). Or else certain embedded files do not work or do not work properly. Obviously, the RealPlayer 8 rpm won't work on LM 7.2. This is ironic. I used to have RealPlayer 7. I foolishly deleted it from my web site storage place when I installed RealPlayer 8. Would someone happen to still have a copy of the RealPlayer 7 rpm? If so, may I ask if you could send me a copy by email attachment? I would really appreciate it. But, before you do it, PLEASE contact me FIRST by regular email. I'll let you know if I still need it.
