[newbie] kmail problem
I'm having a problem sending mail with kmail. My smtp server requires password authentication, and I can't seem to figure out how to get kmail to send the authentication. Also, because of a recent change in isp's, the smtp server is with a different company, and a different user name than the pop server. I'm able to get netscapes mail client configured for it, but I'd really like to go back to kmail. any ideas? --Gina Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? It's an awesome sound system and I have since upgraded MDK from 7.2 to 8.0 and no problems with the sound at all, If there were any big problems with SBL, I don't think they would put them on a specifically Linux system, but I could be wrong. They did sell me a winmodem, although in all fairness, it is one I added on to the system. Still, it seems they either didn't know or didn't care. I guess what system you're using is probably something to consider, when determining compatability. I have been misled, by following someone's advice on something that fine worked for them but not for me, because of differences in the two systems. Sometimes it's not Linux that has the problem, but rather there is an incompatability in your hardware or your configuration. What works for someone else may not work for you. I have found that advice is just something to give me some ideas to start my experimentation, but not an end in itself. Don't get me wrong, I'm not underestimating the value of advice. A hammer is a great tool to drive a nail, but to countersink it, a nail punch is required. Advice and experimentation work together like that. But hey! Re: [newbie] Ximian Gnome
sure will! as soon as i can get the entire download finished. seems everyone in the family needed to check their mail everytime i would resume the FTP transfer. as soon as I saw that the "installer" was just a small script that would connect to another server and grab the packages i new i might as well just find the ftp server and get them all in one place. that way i could head off the dependency issues ahead of time and hopefully make the install a little less painless. -- daRcmaTTeR =/\=??? |%C++ "Beware of little sins. RE: [newbie] The myth that is "Mandrake Support".
Actually this one is rather obvious... Just DON'T auto allocate. The installer is VERY confused because you are trying to install everything on a secondary hard drive. The boot loader wants to be on the primary, as does the /boot partition. You CAN do this, but Lilo (afaik grub doesn't do this though I may be wrong) needs a lot of help. I've helped others do this in the past, and the best solution IMHO is to use the Lilo drive "trick" which remaps the drives at startup. This lets each OS think that it owns the boot drive. In this manner you can set up, up to four separate boot drives via IDE. -JMS [EMAIL PROTECTED] |-Original Message- |From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] |[mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] On Behalf Of Lex Middelberg |Sent: Monday, September 03, 2001 5:03 PM |To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] |Subject: RE: [newbie] The myth that is "Mandrake Support". | | |> -Original Message- |> From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] |> [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of civileme |> Sent: 04 September 2001 01:48 |> To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] |> Subject: Re: [newbie] The myth that is "Mandrake Support". |> |> |> Well what do you need support for? |> |> Write to me. Re: [newbie] Getting closer to a working modem
Admin, Getting a modem to work in Linux can be a pain. I have an internal Actiontec real modem, and whenever I switch it around from one computer to another, I have to follow this basic sequence: Plug in, boot up In a terminal: cat /proc/pci Examine for the modem, noting the first I/O address and IRQ In a terminal: setserial /dev/ttyS3 port 0x ( determined from cat /proc/pci) In a terminal: setserial /dev/ttyS3 irq ?? (?? determined from cat /proc/pci) In a terminal: setserial /dev/ttyS3 uart 16550A Then I can connect using Internet Dialer in the menu under Networking, Remote Access. In my case I use the serial port "ttyS3" not "modem" to connect. Internet Dialer is KPPP. Why KPPP is called Internet Dialer in the menu is a mystery to me. In one case, using a beta Mandrake 8, I also had to manually "modprobe ppp_async" to get the ppp modules loaded. For all modems, those modules have to be there for a ppp connection to work. Applying some of this to your situation may be helpful. What I don't know about is the kernel modules you seem to need to operate your modem. That seems pretty unusual, unless 3Com means the ppp modules (modprobe ppp_async actually loads several ppp modules). Re: [newbie] Dumb Email Time Question
LURKER here, if they are four hours ahead, you would NOT Subtract the four hours. Look at a globe of the earth and see that if they are ahead, you ADD and if they are the other way you would Subtract. In California they are behind you by four hours so you Subtract the hours, because it is earlier in the morning. If they are to the East they would be behind you, after daily light. If it is 1538 hrs, 3:38 PM, in the Eastern Time Zone then it would be four hours later in the day a GMT or Zero meridian. HTH! [newbie] Dumb Email Time Question
I know this is at least slightly off topic (well, it's a newbie question, maybe not a Linux question) ;-) I'd like to make sense of the way times are reported in email. I'm in the Eastern (U.S.) Time Zone, with Daylight Savings in effect. Just a few minutes (3:38 PM) ago I sent myself a test email. Looking at the test email, the date and time (sent) is reported as: Mon, 03 Sep 2001 15:38:00 -0400 OK. Clearly the "15:38" is my local time. Then there is the "-0400", and if I'm not mistaken, right now (daylight savings) we are four hours different than Greenwich Mean Time. So, I might jump to the conclusion that I can simply subtract 4 hours (-0400) from my current time to get Greenwich Mean Time. Wrong! It's just the opposite (unless I'm really mistaken) -- I have to add 4 hours to get Greenwich Mean Time. I might have hoped that whoever set this up had some thought of making this somewhat mnemonic. In other words that the "-" would be the clue to tell you whether to add or subtract to get to GMT. Either they didn't, or my head is twisted around backwards. It's easy enough to change the sign (mentally) before applying the 4 hour correction, but somehow I'm hoping that someone can give me another way to look at this so it will seem logical. (I've mentally gone through this exercise a few times (that is, reminding myself that I must change the sign), but it just doesn't stick. (Maybe it will after writing this email.)) If it really is counterintuitive to everyone else also, let's make a plan to change it. Will we have to wait and roll it in with the Y10K changes, or can we sneak it in sometime before then? It's been a little over six months since this topic was current, but here is some more info. In the intervening months I have done, in the following order: (1) installed Debian potato (2) share the console with another box using the LinkSys two port KVM switch (3) installed SUSe 7.1 But fundamentally, I've always been attached to Mandrake so yesterday I installed MandrakeLinux 8.1b2 - a *really* sweet process incidentally! I found that I had to remove my "mouse", which is a Logitech MarbleMan track-ball, from the KVM and connect it directly to the computer When attached to the KVM it exhibited the behavior that Joe experienced and more. When the machine first boots there cursor comes up in mid-screen. As soon as the mouse is moved it warps to the furthest upper right hand corner of the screen and the pop-up menus flicker as the ball is moved. However, unlike Joe's experience, restarting the x-server did not cure things. So it looks like Mandrake has some sort of bug in the mouse driver they use or perhaps a configuration conflict. This KVM has worked flawlessly for months with Debian and SUSe. It would be nice if they could fix it before 8.1 release. Incidentally, the track-ball itself was declared as a plain old generic mouse during the install process; which is has always been just fine to date. For the record, the LinkSys KVM is one of the nicest I have ever used. I picked it up from an e-store for $60. For my money I got the two-port switch *and* the cables. Plus, the LinkSys is powered directly from the keyboard/serial ports. So you don't have to tie up a plug with another darn wall-wart. It would really be nice to have it work with MandrakeLinux -rick Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com
RE: [newbie] OT - Hardware Dimensions
There are some other differenced between an AT and ATX board. The AT boards are an older design and used the older, large diameter keyboard socket (5 or 8 pins). They also used COM1 for the mouse. The ATX motherboards on the other hand use the modern 6 pin mini-din connectors for the mouse and keyboard. -rick -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Randy Kramer Sent: Monday, September 03, 2001 4:53 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: Hans N. Just to make it clear, an AT motherboard must go into an AT case, an ATX motherboard must go into an ATX case. 2. Unless you find a case that can handle either. I've seen them advertised, never touched one. The metalwork has to be slightly different between AT and ATX (for the on board connectors, at least -- maybe there are some knockouts for either style?), the power supply plug to the motherboard must be different (maybe they would have both styles?), and ? 3. I'd double check a Compaq -- last time I tried to put a standard motherboard in a Compaq case, it didn't work -- it wasn't really a standard AT case (which means the motherboard wasn't standard AT either). Re: [newbie] access permissions, please help
Perhaps editing your /etc/fstab file might help (after making a backup copy first). The line in my file for the CD-ROM drive is as follows: /mnt/cdrom /mnt/cdrom supermount fs=iso9660,dev=/dev/cdrom 0 0 Note, this was done automatically on a new installation of LM8.0 just the other day and works fine. I also have rwx for all three groups with User=Root, Group=Root and I have added myself to the "cdrom" group (maybe I'm supposed to change the /mnt/cdrom group to cdrom but I haven't and it works fine like I said). A month or so ago, I was having similar problems and edited my /etc/fstab file to something similar to yours (with suid=501,exec) but it didn't work. Also I've seen mentioned a few times by Civileme and others that supermount doesn't work with some kernels and that it should be disabled with something like [root@localhost skinky]# supermount -i #guessing from memory I'm using 2.4.3-20mdk and I haven't disabled supermount - its seems to be working OK. If this doesn't help, hopefully someone with more knowledge will help you. If the config is anything like Netscape, you should add an application to the helper-applications in the preferences, type probably x/pdf or mime/pdf and make that kick up xpdf. But this is from the top of my head, so perhaps it is a bit different. You should look along those lines though. Paul Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? This was using the PeanutLinux distro. Sorry to jump in so late on this one. The WINE project recently released a "Netscape plugin" that will take Windows-Netscape plugins and allow them to work in Linux. Specifically, I know that they had Quicktime working. This was targeted at Netscape, but since Konqueror supports Netscape plugins, then Quicktime should work in Konq as well. Dave Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Hi Isaac, I don't remember how to run X remotely, although it can obviously be done. What I've been doing a lot, though, is running individual X apps from my desktop (upstairs) on my laptop (downstairs with the stereo and TV ;-) Here's how you can do it: 1) On Speedy, run the telnet server. 2) On Eve, start KDE, Gnome, etc. 3) On Eve, type the following in a console: xhost +x.x.x.x where x.x.x.x is the IP address of Speedy. 4) On Eve, telnet to Speedy in the same console. It's easier to make an alias that combines the third and fourth steps. 5) While logged in to Speedy, type the following: DISPLAY=x.x.x.x:0 where x.x.x.x is the IP address of Eve. After the first time you do this, it's unlikely you'll type anything else that begins with a capital D, so a simple !D will suffice. 6) Run your favorite X app, and voila!, it'll appear on Eve. Don't forget to use an ampersand when calling up apps, so that you get the prompt back (and ability to run other apps). For instance, when calling up Galeon, type this: galeon & Hope this helps, Miark - Original Message - From: "Isaac Curtis" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Saturday, September 01, 2001 9:56 PM Subject: [newbie] Concurrent Remote X Login > I've got a slow box ("Eve") and a fast box ("Speedy") and have been > playing around with different ways of making the slow one more useable > as a wait for a 128 stick to arrive. RE: [newbie] OT - Hardware Dimensions
You are making a wrong assumption, AT and ATX have more to do with the motherboard design then they do with the size of the board.. If you have an AT board and case, the power supply has a seperate on/off switch that cuts the power from the motherboard directly... (an AT board has a power plug to the board that is made up of two seperate plugs.) if you have an ATX, the motherboard is in control of poweroff, ie the on/off switch on the case connects to the motherboard which turns itself on and off... (an ATX case has one big rectangular power plug to connect the powersupply to the motherboard.) Hense the ability of the system to shut itself down completely when you do a: shutdown -h now There are some other design spec differences (like the cooling design) that are different between the two... but the above will let you identify one way or the other.. hope this makes sense.. rgds Frank -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Hans N. The answer is me :^) I thought I'd try you good folks on the list for an answer to a simple question. I own a Compaq Presario 7471, but I can't ascertain what form factor the motherboard is. If it helps, it's in a mini-tower case, 4 PCI slots, 2 SDRAM sockets, AMD K6-2 processor, 2 IDE controllers. My case seems pretty small and jam packed. Basically I've been day-dreaming about getting several components to build a better system using what I can from the Compaq. Well I got the notion of purchasing a new case. The case is ATX size. My question is, does this mean it will only house ATX sized motherboards, or will AT form factors fit as well? I really don't think my motherboard is Baby AT, but I could easily be wrong. Note this will only work if your DNS is authorative for your domain, and your domain is in turn registed with the Internic. You'll also have to modify your mail server to accept mail for the linux-mandrake.com domain. -JMS [EMAIL PROTECTED] -Original Message-From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] On Behalf Of Stanley SzeSent: Monday, September 03, 2001 2:49 AMTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]Subject: [newbie] Re: Domain name?? Hi, Here is my problem :( -- the domain name that I set up for the server is for example, "linux-mandrake.com" and the host name is "linux." However, I could only receive mails that are sent to [EMAIL PROTECTED] but not [EMAIL PROTECTED], which is the one I want. Can any tell me how to fix the problem, please? Thanks very much!
