[newbie] Signature Script - Fortune

2004-05-08 Thread David
Hi List,

Early last month I posted with regards to my signature script and fortune. It
all works well but about the same time someone posted and gave a code, for want
of a better word to follow the fortune line to limit the size of the fortune
affixed to the signature.

Have seached my mails for last month but no can find. Could someone give me some
leads on this.

Thanks

Re: [newbie] xmms only plays when started in CLI

In addition, afterwards, it will not close not via the GUI or a right click and I
 have to restart X.

At the CLI, it works like I expect it to - I'm using 10.0 with the Official updates.
 Has anyone else experienced this?

The problem lies with soundwrapper. When you use it from the CLI xmms
interfaces directly with the soundcard device. When you start it from
the menu it runs 'soundwrapper xmms'. As I understand it, soundwrapper
allowed multiple programs to produce audio which was then transparently
mixed by the KDE sound daemon. This allowed multiple channels before
that functionality was implemented in hardware kernel device drivers.
Most likely you do not now need it.

soundwrapper is a way for applications that uses sound to be rerouted
to use arts (the sound daemon for KDE) before going into the sound
driver. This way, multiple applications that uses sound can be run at
the same time (i.e. hearing those warning signals in gaim while playing
your favorite mp3 in xmms). This is useful if you have a soundcard that
doesn't support multi-channel sound sources right from the hardware (or
if the linux sound driver for that hardware doesn't support
multi-channel).
http://www.mandrakeusers.org/index.php?showtopic=12260

So essentially this is a bug which you must work around. The solution is
to right click on the K and go to Menu editor. In there locate the
entry for xmms and remove the 'soundwrapper' text from the command.

A.

One day this guy is finally fed up with his middle-class existence and
decides to do something about it. He calls up his best friend, who is a
mathematical genius. Look, he says, do you suppose you could find
some way mathematically of guaranteeing winning at the race track? We
could make a lot of money and retire and enjoy life. The mathematician
thinks this over a bit and walks away mumbling to himself. A week later
his friend drops by to ask the genius if he's had any success. The
genius, looking a little bleary-eyed, replies, Well, yes, actually I do
have an idea, and I'm reasonably sure that it will work, but there a
number of details to be figured out. After the second week the
mathematician appears at his friend's house, looking quite a bit
rumpled, and announces, I think I've got it! I still have some of the
theory to work out, but now I'm certain that I'm on the right track. At
the end of the third week the mathematician wakes his friend by pounding
on his door at three in the morning. He has dark circles under his eyes.
His hair hasn't been combed for many days. He appears to be wearing the
same clothes as the last time. He has several pencils sticking out from
behind his ears and an almost maniacal expression on his face. WE CAN
DO IT! WE CAN DO IT!! he shrieks. I have discovered the perfect
solution!! And it's so EASY! First, we assume that horses are perfect

[newbie] New WM on the block

2004-05-08 Thread JoeHill

Looks interesting, very much like ION, but configurable without having to learn
a freakin' programming language :-D

WMI is a new window manager for X11, which combines the best features of
LarsWM, Ion, TrsWM, evilwm and ratpoison into one window manager.

WMI is new: it is developed from scratch wit h C++ without any ancient code and
design dependencies to antiquated window managers.

WMI is minimalistic: it has no build- or runtime dependencies except the C++
Standard Template Library (STL) and the X11 Library (XLib).

WMI is highly customizable: it is designed with keyboard users in mind. Each
action (e.g. resizing the frame, creating a new workspace, launching an app,
note that WMI provides hundreds of actions) can be bind to a shortcut. So say
good-bye to the rodent :)

[newbie] moving to kde mail under 10.0 Official

2004-05-08 Thread g2
Hi folks.
Not the bigest problem, but I have gotten myself into a bit of a pickle I
don't know how to get out of. Before I wiped my hard drive to install MD
10.0, I backed up my Mail folder tat contained by KMail data. AFTER
running Kmail under MD 10.0 and setting up my mail account, I copied my old
Mail folder to my home directory. I did have a couple of new messages in
kmail, before i quit and copied the old mail folder to home, but nothing I
needed. Everything is working fine now, EXCEPT that each time kmail starts
up, I recieved a dialoge box that announces:

The directory .Mail exists. We can't move mail.

I need to release this dialogue box before kmail will load.
Incidently, the dialoge box is oddly covered up by another box, that announces
K KONTACT groupware. I am however able to move the underlying box out in
order to click ok and allow the program to continue loading.

What should I do to make things right?

Thanks.
Gideon

You can try the simple bash script I have attached.

Just edit it to suite your needs. The way it is now is to produce a
folder called converted with your re-encoded ogg's at quality 4, and
in the comment it puts in the original bitrate.

Okay Ralph, this worked like a charm. The only change I made was to add a MIN
and MAX variable to use with the -m and -M switches of oggenc so I could
prevent the bitrate of the tracks from drifting outside the supported range
of my player.

You'd get much better quality if you just re-ripped/encoded.

Yeah, I know and I would usually do so, but I bought a bunch of tracks
from audiolunchbbox (great site for indie music fans BTW, Ogg and mp3

It sounds like it's some limitation of the projecter having to do with some
aspect of the video signal. If the resolution and color depth are the same,
then it is probably the horizontal sync rate or the vertical sync rate. You
could customize a video mode in X by running xvidtune as root to try
adjusting the sync rates. The easiest way to check what sync rates are used
in your Windows and Linux 800x600 modes, if you don't already know, is on
your monitor -- most monnitors have a button or option to show the current
video mode, including sync rates.

Disregard, found an app for this, if anyones interested its ncompress.
Couldn't find a MDK version however, the redhat 9.0 rpm installed with no
problems and worked fine.

Re: [newbie] New WM on the block

2004-05-08 Thread JoeHill
On Sun, 9 May 2004 00:30:56 +0200
H.J.Bathoorn disseminated the following:

WMI is minimalistic: it has no build- or runtime dependencies except the
C++ Standard Template Library (STL) and the X11 Library (XLib).

Allright...you try that with no gtk+ libs or a few gnome/bonobo ones to boot
and I betcha the whole wm will not run.

Well, the WM would run, but you would still need the basics for running any GTK
app, Sylpheed, Firefox, you name it. I think this WM, though, is aimed at people
who spend most of their time at the CLI, coding, mail, the works.

My problem with the big wm's like kde and gnome is that they guzzle RAM after
that I'm pissed off at having to install all those libraries just to run a
 simple program.

I'm with ya there, no doubt.

Actually I'm saying: No cleaner WM than the commandline (and dialog
 ofcourse;))

I dunno, there's a certain satisfaction in manipulating and creating using the
mouse, I find it especially useful for navigating workspaces, grouped windows,
raising and lowering windows, all with the wheel, no clicky. And the ease of
'drag and drop' for doing things like creating CD's and the like, you can't deny
that.

WMI is highly customizable: it is designed with keyboard users in mind.
Each action (e.g. resizing the frame, creating a new workspace, launching
an app, note that WMI provides hundreds of actions) can be bind to a
shortcut. So say good-bye to the rodent :)

Whadya think use cat for? ;)

LOL!

[newbie] modem problem

2004-05-08 Thread Jonathan Dlouhy
I just bought a USR 5610b modem that was recommended by several
knowledgeable folks to work fine with Linux. It seems to want to use Com
4, which I assume is /dev/ttys3. When I look in the /dev directory ttys3
is linked to pty/s51. I suppose that's why my comm and fax programs
complain that the modem is either busy or locked? Should I remove that
link? And if so, how?

Thanks,

At this point I have to use fxload manually each time I boot.

To make a kernel module load automatically on inserting a USB device edit
 /etc/hotplug/usb.usermap
Copy the format from an existing device. You will need the usb
vendor/product codes of your device which you will see somewhere in dmesg,
or install and run usbview and it will tell you the codes.

Hi derek

in this file it is written that it is automatically generated (by what I do
not know!), and actually there are multiple line for my backpack. In spite of
these lines it is not recognized.

Need more info, are you on a network? do you have firewall running, maybe you
need to open port 631. You do not say which iteration of ML you have, is it

the end check the printer config or reconfig it and then reboot to see if it

Hey, a fellow backpacker! I'm using the USB interface, though, so it might
be different with the parallel port.

  I downloaded the driver from:

 http://www.micro-solutions.com/software_library/linux/index3.html

I started with 10.0 CE and never did get it working there. Hoped 10.0
Official would fix the problem but it didn't.

After a lot of mucking around, I discovered that the fxload program is
missing from the Mandrake 10 distro, even though it's part of the Linux
Hotplug project on SourceForge. This program is responsible for
downloading new firmware to the drive to make it talk to Linux properly.

Check in /var/log/messages to see if there's a message saying that fxload
is missing. If so, download it from:

 http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=17679

 Hope this helps.
