[newbie] Accessing MySQL
When I had installed MDK 10.0 I also had the apache web server, everything related to PHP, and MySQL installed during the initial installation and been updating them when they needed to be updated. I build websites for the fun of it, but I'm having trouble accessing the database. Would I need go into the Konsole and set myself up in MySQL. I had always used Fox Serv, when it installed in my windows hdd it set everything up including the MySQL during the installation. Bobby Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Bobby Yes any application accessing the mySQL database will need a user name and password defined. (Do not use root) The best way to manage MySQL IMO is to install phpMyAdmin read the instructions at /usr/share/doc/phpMyAdmin and then point your browser at http://localhost/admin/phpMyAdmin/index.php Be careful with security. Re: [newbie] KDE and Gnome hangs
I had looked through the other emails and saw that someone else had a problem with KDE (subject of email [newbie] Install of 9.1 has broken KDE) . I followed the advice presented there which was to edit the /etc/profile file and remove .kde/ folder, and run ldconfig. But I tried ldconfig again still nothing. I get a splash screen for KDE 3.1 and it has 7 icons underneath it. It loads upto the second icon which is a wrench and it says initializing system services that's when it hangs and goes to a blue screen. doing some research I think it may be a hardware problem. - Original Message - From: Stephen Kuhn [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Bobby Patel [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, April 01, 2003 3:01 AM Subject: Re: [newbie] KDE and Gnome hangs On Tue, 2003-04-01 at 16:20, Bobby Patel wrote: I did a fresh install of 9.1, and then I get prompted for a username/password and sesison type I would like to use. Since this is a fresh install, I'm assuming you've set the system to login via graphical mode instead of console mode - so you might want to do a CTRL-ALT-F2 to get to a console login prompt - once you get there and login as root, type: ldconfigat the prompt, then type: reboot and after the system happily reboots/resets, try to login again. [newbie] ISO naming convention and no MD5 for 9.1
I was curious of the naming convention for the isos? I have seen two types of isos, some that have rcX something like Mandrake91-rc2-cd1.i586.iso (this is just from memory, so there might/will be a typo). Does the rc, stand for release/revison number? I tried looking for it on google with no results. The other type of iso's ( from ftp.phys.ttu.edu, for example) have the filenames as Mandrake91-cd1-inst.i586.iso, Mandrake91-cd2-ext.i586.iso, Mandrake91-cd3-i18n.i586.iso. I understand these names (CD1 - instalation CD, CD2 - Extras Modules) but the last one doesn't make sense to me. When looking at it I just see more rpms (modules). Also, the ftp sites that do have 9.1 Mandrake don't have a checkum file for non-rcX 9.1 isos, however they do have one for 9.0. I thought checksum files should are created the same time isos are. [newbie] Problems With The Audio Mixer (/dev/mixer)
I am using 7.2 beta 2, b/c I had to give up my cable modem until I move and I am too po to buy the release until I start work (graduating from Texas AM, btw). I try to use different mixer apps like 'gmix', but I get "No mixers found" and that I should make sure that I have sound support compiled into the kernel. BTW, all sound works fine (mp3, wav, cd's, etc ...). I tried to chmod /dev/mixer just for kicks, but no good. [newbie] file permissions and pppd
Hello, I would like for a user to be able to use the /usr/sbin/pppd command .. this is so that the user can connect to the internet via a modem using custum scripts. Now .. when i am logged in as user and I issue the command ./usr/sbin/pppd i get the following error: ./pppd: must be root to run ./pppd, since it is not setuid-root. Now, i have tried giving the user permission to execute the pppd command using chmod 555 .. but I can still not execute the command as the user. I then tried to create a group by editing the /etc/passwd file and the /etc/group giving both root and the user permission to execute this file .. i then changed the group for the file by typing in the following command: chgrp .newgroup pppd .. i still could not execute the pppd as user .. i then tried chgrp newgroup .newgroup pppd .. i still could not execute pppd. I do have linuxconf installed on my system .. now after i had changed the group settings manually and then started linuxconf .. when i went to exit linuxconf it said that it wanted to set the group settings for pppd back to root.root. Is there some sort of file that linuxconf keeps that is overriding what i am doing .. or am i doing somehthing wrong??? any help would be greatly appreciated =)

Re: [newbie] install 7.0 problems
I downloaded the iso and used Nero to burn the image onto a CD. The install went without a hitch .. even got my usb mouse working =) If you do use nero to burn the CD, you must note that Nero (version 4.0.7.5) is unable to open a *.iso file and properly recognize it(or at least I could not find out how to do it ... still a newbie at all this). So, what I did was rename the file with a .nrg extension (extension that nero seems to use for a CD-image), opened the file up with Nero, and burned the imagethis worked for me. gl Bobby - Original Message - From: "Marc Herms" [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, January 19, 2000 5:03 PM Subject: [newbie] install 7.0 problems I had downloaded the directories /Mandrake and /images and /dosutils and created a boot disk. Then, there was another error message, but still continued. However, I ended up that there was STILL Mandrake 6.1 and not 7.0 installed. I *guess* that the problem is that I downloaded the directories with Go!Zilla and it did NOT create any symlinks. Could that be? I am now about to download the iso file but this will take me another day... or so.. :-) which program is best to burn? Easy CD Creator or Nero Burning? I just can download the iso file and burn it on cd, right?! That´s it... ok. thanks, marc
