[newbie] Linux on School Network

2002-09-17 Thread Brian Koppe

Hello,
I'm trying to get a Mandrake Linux 8.1 server that my friend had set
up running on my school's network, but unfortunately it is not getting
an IP address. I've taken the network card and plugged it into my
Windows box, activated it on the network, and placed it back in the
server box, so I know that's not it (we're required to accept terms of
use before it allows our cards to access the internet). I've also
re-run the network configuration tool in the Mandrake Control Center and
it still won't get an IP. Any ideas? What other information do you
need to help? We don't know what else to try from here. Thanks.

Re: [newbie] Announcement: UnitedLinux

2002-05-31 Thread Brian Koppe

I don't understand the concept behind a United Linux distribution, BUT I
do think it would be wonderful if all the Linux distros would get
together in concert and decide on unified standards. There are too many
differences with how they work. Granted, there will always be things
that each distro does themselves, and maybe even would prefer not to
share, but they need to all get together and agree on a directory
structure, etc etc. I think this will be a good step towards that if
the other distros get in on it too. The other fruits of UL, however, I
am not as thrilled about.

Are we talking about Unreal or Unreal Tournament here??

:) believe me when I tell you it is the best $10 dollars you will have
ever spent on a game to run in Linux. Provided you're not going to try and
run on a machine less then a PII with at least 128MB of RAM and a vid card
with less then 16MB of memory on it.

as for Unreal itself you will have to get the version that installs in
windows and then download the Linux binary to install what's on the CD's
to your Linux system. It looks and plays exactly the same in Linux as
it does in windows thanks to OpenGL. Loki has done a spectacular job on
this game.

if you get the CD's labeled UT_GOTY let me know. there is a specific
binary that you'll need to run to install the game correctly. I have it
here at home and can stick on the FTP server for you no trouble at all.

Ok - weird. I decided, just going on a limb, to switch the disc from my

reading the drives differently?

Thanks, but that's not it - I tried all those different variations. I
sent an e-mail that apparently hasn't reached the listserv yet that I
was able to read it with my DVD drive. Strangely though - it turns out
that the only files I saw as being on the CD when I read it from my
CD-RW were the files located deep in the /mnt/cdrom2/Help/Manual/navart
directory. Even stranger is that not even all those files showed up
when I viewed the CD using my CD-RW. Very puzzling indeed.
Nonetheless, I got it to install. Unfortunately, I can't get it to run
now. I did everything exactly as I've done the last two times I
installed it - made a shell script to kill the arts server before
running quake3, etc etc etc - still it doesn't start up. It changes the
resolution to the installation default 640x480 and then and then says
received signal 11 - exiting. Now, The only time I got that signal 11
error was when I first tried to install and I ghad the sound server
problem - but that's fixed since I'm using a script which kills the
sound server first, so I don't know what's going on :-\

Anyone able to help?

Re: [newbie] DivX Player

2002-05-20 Thread Brian Koppe

... and player? What player do you mean? There are probably about 15
different player for Linux for DivX films, and I can't seem to find any
reference to divxPlayer anywhere?

Sorry, I thought I had been clear on this but I guess not. The player
I'm speaking of is the The Playa, referred to in filenames as
divxPlayer. You can find it on the official DivX website
http://www.divx.com This is also where I got the codec for Linux from.

Sounds like the film you are trying to open is not in actual fact a DivX
film. I'm guessing that this is another file to the one you opened when
testing the player? If it is the same one, then my guess is that the
player is very buggy.

As far as the file goes, I did not open the player and the file in the
same command. When I tested it, I opened the player and then clicked
the button to open a file, and chose the divx movie I wanted to view.
At that point it worked just fine. When I went to actually WATCH a
movie in it however, I opened the player, just like before, and was not
able to click any buttons to open any movie, as it closed almost
immediately after. Frankly, I know how to tell the difference between
file formats, and I know how to compile just fine, but I like the
official DivX player from divx.com. It ought to work, it HAS worked,
and I know for a fact it works as one of my friends installed it on his
Gentoo installation with no problems. My question really concerns the
error message. I know the problem lies in there.

There are two files in /usr/local/bin, one is called, simply,
divxPlayer. The contents are as follows:

#!/bin/sh

BINDIR=/usr/local/bin
DIVX_SKIN_DIR=/usr/local/divxPlayer/Skins; export DIVX_SKIN_DIR

/usr/local/bin/divxPlayer.bin $

I believe the problem may lie somewhere in this script file. There is
also a divxPlayer.bin in /usr/local/bin. If anyone would like to see
that I can send it but I don't want to mail an attachement to the whole
list.

Thanks for your help!

Miark wrote:

Shane and I were talking about M$ products and the government. I thought
y'all might be interested too.

First, the Peruvian government is putting through a bill that would
eliminate closed, proprietary software (M$ software) from government
computers. The General Manager of M$ in Peru wrote a public complaint,
and a congressman wrote a response. I was most interested in what he
said about security:

To guarantee national security or the security of the State, it is
indispensable to be able to rely on systems without elements which allow
control from a distance or the undesired transmission of information to
third parties. Systems with source code freely accessible to the public
are required to allow their inspection by the State itself, by the
citizens, and by a large number of independent experts throughout the
world. Our proposal brings further security, since the knowledge of the
source code will eliminate the growing number of programs with spy code.
In the same way, our proposal strengthens the security of the citizens,
both in their role as legitimate owners of information managed by the
state, and in their role as consumers. In this second case, by allowing
the growth of a widespread availability of free software not containing
spy code able to put at risk privacy and individual freedoms.

Well said. And if that wasn't enough to stricken M$ crap, check this out
(in case you didn't already read it in Shane's sig):

Microsoft has knowingly and willfully concealed information regarding
security flaws in computer software from the [National Security Agency]
out of fear that revealing such flaws would reduce the number of copies
of its products that would be purchased by the government... I have
raised this issue internally with Microsoft, and in return have been the
subject of both bribes and threats. -ED CURRY, Computer Security
Specialist, in a letter to Defense Secretary William Coen

In other words, M$ risked national security for the love of money. How
unbelievably vile! Just look at how much M$ cares about the security of
the 260+ million inhabitants of its home country.

I didn't think I could hate M$ as much as I do right now. Anyway, I
really hope the US government starts taking notice of how other
governments are separating themselves from the evil that is Microsoft.

[newbie] AbiWord 1.0.1

2002-05-10 Thread Brian Koppe

Hey folks, me again. :-[

I'm having two problems with AbiWord 1.0.1 - the first has to do with
fonts. When I start it up, I get this message:

AbiWord was not able to add its fonts to the X font path. This does not
mean that there is anything wrong with your system, but you will need to
modify your font path manually. Please see Unix Font Path Problems in
the FAQ section of the AbiWord help file for more detailed information,
including instructions on how to turn this warning off.

Now, I looked for above said section and could not find it :( I looked
every else where it said stuff about fonts and could not find anything
referring to my problem and how to fix it :( After I hit OK in the
warning box, AbiWord opens and *seems* to be working fine, but I must
admit all I've used it for so far is to type this is a test in a
couple different fonts and print it off. Anyone able to help???

On a much lighter and simpler note, the window size that it opens to is
a bit annoying. The width is just too small to show the full toolbar on
top and it cuts off some of the right side of the page. I know the size
window it opens is in a config file somewhere so I was hoping one of you
could point me in its direction. Thanks

install KDE. The script may be looking for kinstalltheme in the wrong
place, though. Do a locate kinstalltheme in a terminal, and you'll see
if a) you have it installed and b) where it is. If you don't have it
installed, install it using software manager in the control center. If you
do have it installed, look at the script in a text editor and see where
it's looking for kinstalltheme, and change it to the correct location.

Hi

No one has posted a stupid question a long.

How can I save in Gimp?

I cannot find any save or save as or anything else referring to saving
anywhere (not in file menu, and not anywhere else).

Have I missed something... I am using 8.2, and it is the original
install,

Thanks for hints

That would be XP - I read the e-mail after playing Jedi Knight II which
I have not had time to figure out how to get working in Linux yet.

Re: [newbie] Music from the window

2002-04-29 Thread Brian Koppe

Christian,

I'm a fairly new newbie as well, but I *can* tell you that NTFS + Linux
are not good together. I don't remember which, but Linux cannot read or
write to it, and the one of those which it CAN do it cannot do well. My
suggestion, if you can, is to reformat/reinstall Windows using FAT32.
Obviously though, this will require you to back up data, which maybe
someone else on this board can give you better advice. The nice thing
about FAT32 is that Linux is seamless with it. Whenever I reinstall
Linux or Windows, I just move all my data back and forth between each
partition - it's quite convenient in that way, and obviously many others.

XMMS is the player you referred to that looks like Winamp - it's a great
player. May I also suggest keeping an eye out for Winamp 3 for Linux?
It's only an Alpha Preview right now, but it looks like it may be
pretty solid in the future.

Konqueror is, in fact, sort of like Explorer in Windows. Unlike Windows
though, there are many other file managers that you may like to see as
well. I prefer Konqueror myself, but be sure to at least look at
Nautilus and a few of the others.

As far as mounting drives, I'm pretty much a newbie myself as I said,
and I've never had to do it with Mandrake 8.2. The drives should mount
in startup I believe. If I'm wrong, I'm sure someone here will correct me.

Lastly, don't feel bad asking these questions :-) We were all at your
point at some time (myself not too long ago). Hope I helped! ;-)

 Hi all,

first post here, sorry to sound like a Linux dummy, but I am (not only
 a Mandrake newbie ;-)

So, I have managed to get 8.2 installed (after trying with RedHat,
which seemed to dislike my partitioning...).
I now have to work my way through all these Howto's, and I'd like to
listen to some music while doing that.
I found this player that looks like Winamp, buried deep in the
startmenu somewhere. So far, so good.
Now I have plenty of MP3's, but they are on a W2K NTFS partition,
which I couldn't find with Konqueror (seems to me that this is the
 explorer counterpart, right?).
If I understood correctly, I have to do something like mounting a
drive or so, but I have no idea how to do that.

My question: Is there another program (or package) that I need to do
 this?
And if it's not worth an answer, can I find it in the HowTo's ?

 Thanks a lot
 Christian

I've upgraded to KDE 3 and I'd say it's most likely worth it. There are
DEFINITELY some bugs though so if you want something that's gonna work just
right, I'd wait a little longer.
