[newbie] partition woes

2002-01-30 Thread Carl Lafferty

Question about partitioning.. Friend has brought his pc to me a few times
to install Linux on it with mandrake 8.1 being the most recent. Now his
comp
has a 20gig and a 600meg drive. The 20gig is master and is broken up into
a 4gig partition and the remaining is a windows data drive. I used
partition magic
6.0 to resize the roughly 15 gig partition down to something like 8 or 9gig
so we will have enough to install Linux. after the resizing is finished we
booted into windows
to make sure that his data is still there and the old E drive is down to the
proper size
and it is fine.

Now on to installing Linux. I break the remaining free space using
mandrakes
partitioner during the install. 3gig or so for /, 256M for swap and
remaining
for /home. LM81 installs just FINE (solo-1 audio not supported yet not
withstanding).
Problem is, when he boots windows now his old E drive is GONE. Not there..
All we have is C and D.

Since we need the drive for windows (accounting software is there as well
as some games Linux does not run yet) I end up having to kill the Linux ,
make a fat-32
out of the free space and join with the old partition (all this in partition
magic)
to get his drives back.

What are my options to getting his system working. I fear it is because
Linux
makes that extra space into a primary partition. and that confuses windows
to
death...

Is my only option to resize the C drive to a larger size, kill the E
partition
and install Linux in that remaining extended partition??

Just looking for ideas here.

I have a computer I thought SSH was working on. I used Putty to
 log in but
it never asked me for my pass phrase, just my username and password. I
don't know if that was encrypted or not. I'm starting to think not.
Anyway, I installed Bastille and told it to keep the ssh port and port 22
open, you can specify both name and port. After that it won't connect at
all. Putty mearly closes the window out and tells me it couldn't
 connect.
Am I missing a file, setting or something that will allow me to
 connect? I

RE: [newbie] Linux to Windows connection problem

2001-12-08 Thread Carl Lafferty

When I ping the linux from windows I get an ok message (100% ok, 0%
dropped) but when I ping from linux it keeps on pinging forever. Does
this mean that only one of my machines is misconfigured, and if this is
 the case, wich one?

What do you mean it keeps pinging forever?
does it return numbers like this??

Splinter ~ ping 172.24.38.37
PING 172.24.38.37 (172.24.38.37): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 172.24.38.37: icmp_seq=0 ttl=128 time=0.7 ms
64 bytes from 172.24.38.37: icmp_seq=1 ttl=128 time=0.6 ms
64 bytes from 172.24.38.37: icmp_seq=2 ttl=128 time=0.6 ms
64 bytes from 172.24.38.37: icmp_seq=3 ttl=128 time=0.6 ms
64 bytes from 172.24.38.37: icmp_seq=4 ttl=128 time=0.6 ms
64 bytes from 172.24.38.37: icmp_seq=5 ttl=128 time=0.5 ms

but keep going??
If so, then that is fine. hit CTRL-C to end it and it should give you
something like

--- 172.24.38.37 ping statistics ---
6 packets transmitted, 6 packets received, 0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max = 0.5/0.6/0.7 ms

default ping in linux goes on slightly less than forever
unless you limit it. Default ping in windows is only to do it
4 times.

Hope this helps.

If I don't do this first, I have the same symptoms you do.
 Afterwards, I can

Oh well. Live and learn. Was happy to see it supported so well!

[newbie] Mandrake for Alpha processor

I soon will have back in my possession an Alpha server 800/400
with 64meg and 6gig of space. This USED to be an NT (phewy) server

server where I work.

what I would like to know is if anyone has any experience in
installing on this system. I tried to install northern linux
from hard-data on this beast and it was a dismal failure from the
get-go.

What kind of problems am I going to run into and more importantly
will someone here have some answers??

I understand from trying this before that this particular alpha
is kind of an oddball of alphas..

netins.net simply is the email service I have used for the last 8 years

[newbie] Compiling KICQ with kde2

2001-01-02 Thread Carl Lafferty

Did a fresh install saturday and decided to
try out kicq at the prompting of Ron "darklord" hall
so I download the src and the src for icqlib that it
suggests. ICQlib compiles/installs just fine
but kicq will NOT compile.
I configured it with

./configure --with-kde-version=2

and it worked OK or appeard to (no errors anyway)
but when I run make afterwards it
complains that there is no configure.files and bombs out...

I am away from my linux box right now or I would have
included an exact screen shot..

Any help appreciated.

RE: [newbie] Netscape-kppp weirdness

2001-01-01 Thread Carl Lafferty

desktop, but as soon as I reached the desktop the "Internet" icon
started to show a "starburst effect" (no kidding) and multiple copies of
the connection window began to appear--like really fast, filling up my
taskbar and continuing to spawn the app way faster than I could hope to
kill it. In desperation I killed the X-server. In 3 years of using
linux this hasn't happened before, and I hope it doesn't again.

I have had this happen to me as well. Just surfing along and
its like I am hijacked but I am sure none of the pages I am
on do that.
