RE: [newbie] Configuring mouse

2000-04-04 Thread David Hester

Hey Joe,
yea I looked myself and couldn't find it either.. I finally found a vague
reference on deja news to a config program..
called.. XF86Setup.
so you go to the terminal window and type that in "XF86Setup" exactly or it
won't come up.. then you have a place to config mouse..
not sure why mandrake didn't put that in the drakConfig!?!?!?! ... but it
lets you change... but be warned if you change to a incompatible mouse and
hit apply.. your mouse quits working immediatly..
hope it helps

How do I change the mouse type in Mandrake 7.0? I went into DrakConf under
Hardware Configuration, and I can see the currently defined mouse, but can't
see
any way to modify it - am I missing something?

RE: [newbie] Installation of Mandrake 7.0

2000-04-04 Thread David Hester

Yea I understand your pain.. after having a similar problem of losing
data... I reinstalled windows and then reinstalled mandrake I made it where
I boot linux now from a floppy.. so when I want windows I just reboot and
let it load.. and when I want linux I put in my boot disk and let linux
load... also a side note I have 2 harddrives my windows drive and a
dedicated drive for linux..

of course the only Fail safe way is to back up critical data..and just try
it again..
hope this helps.

Subject: [newbie] Installation of Mandrake 7.0

I am a new user to Linux-Mandrake 7.0, well I should say potential new user!
I obtained a copy of Mandrake 7.0 from last month's issue of PC Plus. I
followed the instructions in the magazine and on the CD ROM expecting to be
able to dual the system and be able to use Windows when needed.

When the system rebooted I found (on pressing the TAB key to pull up the
OS menu) that there was no option to use Windows. I am not especially
familiar with Unix and the layout so I ended up reinstalling Win98. At the
initial install I used the "Auto Allocate" feature to resize my Windows
partition and allocate the appropriate partitions for Linux, but I ended up
reformating the entire hard disk and losing Windows.

LILO infact only gave me the option to boot using "linux" and "floppy". I
find the action of repartitioning the hard disk quite daunting and I am
loath to try it again. However, I really do want to try linux on my system.

I have a AMD Athlon 600 Mhz PC, with a 27Gb HDD and 128 Mb of RAM, running
Windows 98SE. I have had no real problems in Linux detecting my hardware, in
fact it seems to work quite well, but as I have a number of Windows
applications (who doesn't, but that may change after the Department of
Justice ruling yesterday!!!) I want the flexibility to use both OS.

Please could anyone help with an "idiots guide" to installing Mandrake 7.0,
with particular detail around repartitioning the HDD and getting LILO in the
right place to boot either OS?

Thanks

Yes,
I do apologize I didn't mean it to sound so smart a$$.. but after the fact
it did come off as that.
but I do appreciate the suggestions..
I my system is currently down and will try new suggestions next week when I
get my new processor.
Thanks once again.

No, I am sorry to say that because I read 100-300 emails a day I have a
problem remembering what everyone said every time. This makes me a bad
person in some peoples eyes. Unfortunately this list does not keep
threads like a news server would so if you don't quote old messages I
only have what info is in the present message. I may not be the only
person out there with this problem...

I haven't much else to say on your problem except perhaps you could
install zgv (a console based graphics viewer) to test your mouse
configuration. If your mouse works correctly under this one then you
know to look elsewhere for an answer, Maybe something in quake.

/etc/vga/libvga.config is used for both.

[newbie] QuakeII mouse problem

2000-03-29 Thread David Hester

Hey all,

I am running mandrake 7.0.. and gotten everything installed.. I am dual
booting between win98 and linux.
I decided to get my quake II game running on the linux side... so I linked
/usr/local/games/quake2\base2q to the windows partition. so that seems to
work I then the quake2 binaries.. and the 3dfx binaries.. all works well
(except I can only get my 3dfx to work while I am root) that I know is a
permissions problems... but the only Thing I can't get working is the
mouse.. I have a microsoft mouse with scroll wheel.
I have modified the libvga.conf in the /etc/vga/ folder .. and have tried
the settings for microsoft,PS/2, Intellimouse..

I also have run the XF86Setup.. and played with the different mice settings
there...even playing with the settings there I noticed the scroll wheel
didn't register..
Does anyone have a mouse with a scroll wheel working?.. is it a setup driver
or setup I need to run?
Also when modifing the libvga.conf... do I have to reboot linux for that to
take effect I am still unsure of how linux handles start up and config
files..

Thanks
David
