AW: [newbie] Xserver Problem with Trident 3DImage985

2000-04-03 Thread Drazenko Djuricic

Hello there,

I had a similar problem. My graphics card was a TRIDENT CyberBlade i7 3D
AGP,
my Monitor is a LG Studioworks 78FT (17" Flatron, 1600 x 1200).
Due to my experience I shall never again buy any card or any Motherboard
that has a Trident chip on it. Trident just sucks.
What I did to make it work:
Chose my Trident CyberBlade i7 and selected a generic
"1024 x 768 60Hz LCD" ( !!! ) as my Monitor, as all other
settings would not work with this card (my LG Monitor works OK
when used with other cards such as ATI or NVIDIA).
The result was that I got a 1024 x 768 16-Bit color screen at 60Hz.
B U T : The performance really really sucks and is way behind even
my slow old Pentium 90. I had to turn off almost all "special effects"
such as "show contents when moving window" etc.

Altough I made it work, I found my Linux experience with my Trident card
was so frustrating that I shut it down and now instead use a
RIVA TNT2 based card.

DJ.

 Hi

I'm having problem with my Trident 3DImage985 AGP Videocard, when
 starting
 Xserver on Mandrake 6.1.
The device is in the Driver list of this version of mandrake.I select the
device from the list. Also my Monitor is in the list of monitors.
 It probes
the setting Ok but X server has some problems with this device.
Also when I select 800X600 in 8 bit mode, the X server can't perform a
 proper appearance.
If anybody has the remedy, please inform me.

 Regards

 A. Momeni

AW: [newbie] Copy Files

2000-03-28 Thread Drazenko Djuricic

This has historical reasons:
UNIX like operating systems only use a "New Line" Byte
at the end of each written line, while DOS based operating
systems such as Windows use two bytes:
a "New Line" plus "Carriage Return".
So if you read a text file that was saved on a UNIX like
operating system under Windows it will look as if everything
was written on one single line, because the "CR" Byte is
missing at the end of each line.

Workaround: There are shareware and freeware editors for
Windows which will automatically recognize a text file
that was originally written under UNIX / Linux and
display it correctly. You can find such text editors
at WinFiles: www.winfiles.com .

There are also lots of Linux tools that allow to convert
DOS and UNIX files back and vice versa. You will find
them here: www.linuxberg.com

I saved a /var/log/*file on a floppy. In order for me to view it
 in Linux,
I have to type 'pico filename' , and I can view the file as
 it's written.
When I look at the same file in Windows it looks like one big paragraph,
instead of the 200 + lines of entries of the original file. Is there a way
to save the file in Linux so that it can be viewed in it's original format
 in Windows?

in Linux the file looks like this:

 1 adffsgh
 2 dfgtg=hjeeur
 .
 .
 .
 200 ftryu =iop;p;

in Windows the same file looks like this:
 1adffsgh2 dfgtg=hjeeur200 ftryu =iop;p;

 Thanks
 Eunice

Hello,

I also have a Creative Labs SoundBlaster 128 PCI.
I configured it with "sndconfig".
First I also thought that it did not work, but then
I realised that the volume settings were set very
very faint. Using a mixer program I increased the
sound volumes and voila - I had sound.
You may want to try that, because the sound chips
(Ensoniq ES/1370 or ES/1371) are usually well supported
and recognized under Linux.

[newbie] VIA Chipset: Sound ? Device busy Error.

2000-03-26 Thread Drazenko Djuricic

Hello
out there,

my PC's
Motherboard has a VIA / Apollo MPV4 Chipset (VT82Cxxx
something).
Has
anyone succeeded in making the sound work ?

I have
tried with sndconfig - it sees a SB compatible device, but
reports
errors
saying Device busy. Same upon reboot, when the sound
drivers
are
being loaded, it says failed to initialize: Device
busy.
I think
it is a question of correct initialization / resetting of the
device,
because
under Windoze I never get such errors.

Has
anyone out there such a chipset and made it work under Linux
?

I know
there are commercial packages such ass OSS/OpenSound
which
would support that device, but I'd prefer the free Linux
stuff
before
spending money for commercial drivers.

Best
regards and thank you for any help,

DJ.

AW: [newbie] USB support?

2000-03-23 Thread Drazenko Djuricic

According to the manual, not really.
USB support in general is still not that good
in x86 Linux variants as it is in Windoze.
But they are working on it, so chances are great
that newer kernel versions will offer better
USB support.

AW: AW: [newbie] USB support?

2000-03-23 Thread Drazenko Djuricic

Well, you might want to try using another Distro.
I personally and from a professional point of view
like SuSE Linux very much. At work we use their
distros on several machines (Mail, DNS, etc.).
The advantage of SuSE (current release: SuSE Linux 6.3,
SuSE Linux 6.4 is to be released real soon) is that
they pack an incredible lot of software on their CD's
and they usually also always include the newest
stable and "hacker" kernels. So if you really HAVE TO
use your ISDN adapter via USB, you should give SuSE a try.
Chances are big, that if there was any advancement in
USB support SuSE has included the appropriate kernel
onto their CD's, so all you needed to do is to recompile
the kernel and have USB support included.
But be warned, though: SuSE is great if you know what
you are doing, but Newbies will find it rather
unfriendly or hard to understand, IMO. From a Newbie POV
Mandrake is far better suited.

Well, does not really mean not at all? Or, sometimes...

I'd love to be able to use my Sagem USB ISDN adapter

Hello,

I myself use ATI cards in many of my Linux installations,
amongst them also is a ATI Xpert@Work 98.
ATI Cards work very well with Linux, really.
To make X-Windows work, choose "ATI Mach64" as X-Server.
This should work for almost all ATI cards that
have a ATI Rage or Rage Pro chip.

I hated Unix for Dummies! It was the only Unix book in my town
 and I needed
to look up some commands. After being told I was to stupid to learn the
command I was interested in and that I should go find a Unix Guru
 and offer
him pizza, it hit the wastecan at high velocity.

Still lots to learn, though, but with the " ... for Dummies"

You should give "Linux for Dummies" or "Unix for Dummies" a try.
