[newbie] Linux won't boot - FSCK
Hi there, A power outage turned off my computer while I was exiting from Linux and now when I try to boot Linux up, I'm presented with this Unattached inode 522486 /dev/hdb5:unexpected inconsistency;run fsck manually So I did this fsck -A -V ; echo == $? == and the outcome was... ==8== therefore it's an operational error, but now I'm stumped as to what to do. Any help would be appreciated. Evan
[newbie] Linux won't boot - FSCK..updated
Hi again, A power outage turned off my computer while I was exiting from Linux and now when I try to boot Linux up, I'm presented with this Unattached inode 522486 /dev/hdb5:unexpected inconsistency;run fsck manually So I did this fsck -A -V ; echo == $? == and the outcome was... ==8== therefore it's an operational error, but now I'm stumped as to what to do. All right, I determined that it is a bad super-block so I'm trying to replace it by doing this e2fsck -b 8193 /dev/hdb5 but it returns... e2fsck:bad magic number in super-block while trying to open /dev/hdb5 and it returns the same response for other superblocks (at 16385 and 24577) any suggestions? Thanks, Evan
[newbie] RE:How to I change [localhost] to [mycomputer]
Hi there, With some linux versions they have "Welcome to Caldera" or whatever the distribution is but on my computer it has "Welcome to [localhost]" so would some one please tell me how I can change " [localhost] " to [mycomputer] at the login screen. Under the K Menu, go to SettingsApplicationsLogin Manager. There, on the first tab (Appearance) there is a box called Greeting String, in which you can type any message. Here you can also edit the login box logo and change your startup background screen (I have a very nice Tolkien one). Hope that helps, Evan Holt
[newbie] KDE Network Neighbourhood?
Hi there, I'm looking for a KDE network application like Windows' Network Neighbourhood. Any links would be appreciated, Evan Holt
Re: [newbie] 3Dfx
Hi there, Hi I just purchased a Voodoo3 3000 and the drivers at the 3Dfx site are there but the one I started to download was 30+ meg. in length not something you want to try on a 24K modem hookup! :-( I have to wait till someone comes out with them on CD! vern I'm not sure you have the right drivers. I downloaded the drivers for the Voodoo3 2000 and they were under two megs. Perhaps you are right, or maybe you just have the wrong drivers. Contact me offlist if you still would like some help. Evan
Re: [newbie] 3Dfx
Hi there, Does anyone know how can I install the 3dfx drivers and Glide for Linux in a Mandrake Linux System?? If you are lucky enough to own a Voodoo card, just head over to... http://linux.3dfx.com/ and you will find all of the RPMs for device drivers and Glide. Hope that helps, Evan
Re: [newbie] 3Dfx
Hi there, Sorry about this but I must be missing the plot somewhere. I have a 3dfx voodoo3 card and I have never needed to download any drivers of any kind. It works perfectly from the box. Am I missing something I am running 800x600 32bit true colour with no problems what so ever. I have used this card with perfect success under Md 6.1 and now 7 The later versions of XF86Setup can detect a Voodoo card, but the glide drivers are required for games such as Unreal Tournament, Quake 3 and some newer shareware games. [newbie] Applixware or StarOffice?
Hi there, I've been using Sun's StarOffice for a while and am quite pleased with it (also happy about the upcomming revision that will be comming out late summer) but then I also saw Applixware in it's shiny new box and was wondering if anyone has tried it and what they think...for just typing up casual reports and stuff..nothing heavy. Thanks in advance, Evan Holt
Re: [newbie] Screen resolution
Hi there, What on earth do you mean? You will have to be a little more descriptive. RE:[newbie] Active X on Evan Messages
Hi there, i have attached the following that is in his messages...this is a malicious script...i think he needs to be kicked off the list... Thanks for bringing this to my attention.. First I would like to ask what on earth this Active X bit is all about? I have no idea where on earth it came from or what it even is. All I can say is that it must be something that Microsoft Outlook is doing, so I have switched e-mail programs in hopes that it stops. Don't you think that you should have asked me first what it is rather than writing slanderous messages about me? Evan Holt
[newbie] Apology and findings...
Hi again, I received this off list from [EMAIL PROTECTED] (thanks) Here is the source of your last message: since you wrote them in html (grrr), an ActiveX applet has managed to worm its way in - it looks to me like a virus of some sorts. As you can see, it mentions autoexec.bat and the registry - get virus checker please! In the mean time (actually always!) write in plain ASCII! Well first, sorry to everyone for this scare. I guess MS Outlook did something that I was not aware of...first send messages in HTML. Sorry, I didn't realize that it was doing that. I know how annoying it looks, but at the time is was the only e-mail program I had. As for the Active X thing, I'm afraid I don't even know what it is or what to do about it. I do have a anti-virus program (Norton AntiVirus) but it didn't pick anything up. If anyone can send me some information about how this happened or how to stop it, I would greatly appreciate it :-) For now I'm using a different e-mail program that sends in generic ASCII (thank goodness). I'm attempting to send e-mail to myself to try and catch MS Outlook in the act. Again, apologies to all! Evan Holt
[newbie] Virus warning
Hi there, Thanks to Jayce Steadman's carefull eye, the virus has been detected. It only effects users with Microsoft Outlook 4.0 or 5.0 and the patch can be found here. http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms99-032.asp Here is the technical blurb on it... The worm appends itself to the end of legitimate outgoing messages as a signature. When receiving the message, the worm will automatically insert a copy of itself into the appropriate StartUp directory of the Windows operating system for both English and French language versions. The file created is named KAK.HTA. The worm utilizes a known Microsoft Outlook Express security hole, Scriptlet.Typelib, so that a viral file is created on the system without having to run any attachment. Simply reading the received email message will cause the virus to be placed on the system. Another apology to everyone. That's the last time I'm using MS Outlook ever again! Evan
Re: [newbie] Screen resolution (in ASCII..whew)
At 07:42 PM 4/28/00 +0200, you wrote: Uhmmm... perhaps you would enjoy using ctrl-alt- plus and ctrl-alt- minus? I tried that already...it's currently running at 800*600, but when using the minus key you would think it would go to 640*480, but it doesn't, it reverts to a resolution where you can only see a little section of the desktop. Any help would be appreciated. Evan
Re: [newbie] MODEM WORK AROUND
Hi there, Thanks for the link, I have already put it on my web page because it's an excellent site that I refer to every once and a while. I'm slowly collecting good Linux web links and hope to put up a good Linux page on my site when I get some more time. Unfortunately people have been working on the elusive Winmodem to Linux drivers for quite some time and since Winmodems aren't real modems, I think I'm still going to go support a company such as Diamond or Viking that made 'real' (external/Linmodem) modems and make them look nice. It could be some time before a driver is finished and all of the bugs are worked out. Evan Holt - Original Message - From: Bob Root Evan, I identified my win as a Lucent(DSP) and from a link on the below site found that there are several manufactures that are writing drivers for Linux. Lucent Tech. is one of them. Suggest not buying another modem until you look into Linmodem.com.
[newbie] (Newbie) Hydrogen
I don't know if this has been posted yet, but the latest version of Mandrake (Mandrake 7.1-BETA) can be obtained here http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/hydrobeta.php3

Just thought I'd throw something in here. Check out this web site for a fantastic programming application :-) http://www.metrowerks.com/desktop/linux/ Hope it helps someone. Evan Holt

Re: [newbie] MODEM WORK AROUND
Hi there, Is there a rpm or program that is a work around for the winmodem problem? I wish, I bought a new IBM Aptiva and it has a Winmodem too :-( You could take a peak at this wonderfull page here http://www.o2.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html it lists most modems and if they are compatable with Linux or not. I'm currently looking on the online auction eBay to see if I can find a good cheap one. Hope that helps, Evan Holt
[newbie] Printing Problems

For example... lpr -POfficeLW test.txt it seems to send the document (no error appears), but nothing happens (no processing, light blinking on printer, etc..). I can print to it fine with the PC side (I'm dual-booting). Ok, here is my printcap section that I thought that I edited properly, but I'm not sure. Where does it tell the computer to look on the network for the printer?. ##PRINTTOOL3## SMB OfficeLW| [Laserwriter_8500]:\ :sd=/usr/spool/lpd/OfficeLW:\ :sh:\ :af=/var/spool/lpd/lp/acct:\ :lp=/dev/null:\ :mx#0:\ :rm=lw_8500:\ :if=/usr/lib/rhs/rhs-printfilters//smbprint: maybe I haven't done it right, any help would be appreciated.
Re: [newbie] Networking (PCs, and Macs and Linux oh my!)
Hi there, From: duncan [EMAIL PROTECTED] Unclear from your note you say you can print ok on the network but not from linux. Have you plugged into network using linux or w98? Please let list know a few more details. I like your idea about using VMWare, I'll try that sometime down the road, I'm curious to see Windows emulated in Linux. Sure thing, just to clarify things, I did a little more work on this today and I can sum up the whole problem to this... I have an Apple LaserWriter 8500 connected to an ethernet hub. It has it's own IP address as well as my PC. Now if I Ping the printer, or Telnet it, it can see it and print off the configuration page. This proves that the network is set up properly. Re: [newbie] Start-up Screen
Hi again, Just out of curiosity, is the start-up boot manager just an addition to the Debian versions such as Corel and Storm Linux? Thanks, Evan Holt
[newbie] Networking (PCs, and Macs and Linux oh my!)
Hi there, I just caught a little bit of the previous discussion on Samba when I joined this list, so please excuse me if I'm re-earthing an already beat to death topic on newbies and Samba ;-) I'm running Mandrake and Win98 (dual boot) here at home durring my summer holidays from College. My parents run their own accounting business out of the house and therefore have a pre-existing network. So, being the curious student that I am, I'm learning the wonders of networking and both Win98 and Linux prove to be quite the task. So..to get to the point...the pre-existing network has two iMacs (Macintoshes) and a network printer with a static IP address. Now, I have hooked up my PC into the ethernet hub, given it an IP address and now sucessfully print to the network printer. Now, the problem seems to be printing in Linux. I've sucessfully installed Samba, but am unsure how to set it up to print to a network printer. Since the path for it would be through Windows, it can never work that way because of dual booting right? Any help on this matter would be great. If this is unclear, please e-mail me, and if anyone can offer any help or links it would be appreciated very much! Thanks in advance, Evan Holt
[newbie] (newbie] Yet Another Programming Question
Hi there, I'm a newbie to Linux, and I know that this might sound like a silly question, but I was wondering about Visual Basic for Linux. Now I know that VB is a Microsoft product so VB for Linux would be an oxymoron, but still, I'm a college student and would rather run it in Linux rather than Win98. So are there any rumours of development (third-parties)? Running it on Wine will be a chore for another day :-) Thanks in advance. Evan
[newbie] (newbie) Start-up Screen
Hi there, I think the start-up screens for Corel Linux and Storm Linux are great, where you get to choose your OS, rather than the cruddy text boot manager. Is there any way to make your own (other than using BootMagic)? Thanks, Evan
