RE: [newbie] RAID under Mandrake

2003-11-14 Thread H. Carter Harris
Travis:

I chose the 3Ware card that supports 2 drives because the Mandrake
distribution of linux is compiled with the drivers for that card ... at
least they were in 9.1.

It installed without a hitch and is working nicely.

Subject: [newbie] RAID under Mandrake

Hi All,
I'm looking at getting a RAID card to put in my box. I'm
running Mandrake 9.1 and wondered what would be the best card.
Here is what I'm looking at so far: Promise SuperTrak 100 or 66,
3WARE DiskSwitch AccelerATA 8 port UDMA100 EIDE RAID Card, or
the Promise FastTrak 66 or 100.

What I would like to know is: which one is best supported
under Linux (i.e. in kernel, with drivers, etc.)? which one is
the easiest to install? I would like to eventually do RAID level
5 but I will start with RAID 1 and go from there.

I have looked on Google to find support and on the respective
Web sites but would like to know if anyone has specific experience.

Thanks!

I'm with Frank on this one. I used the update functions in Mandrake Control
Center and it fixed the problem.

I found this message in archives without any solution to help me. I had
the same problem with TightVNC from MDK91 cdrom - the solution that worked
for me was to upgrade the two qt3 rpms.

RE: [newbie] Question about Running Dos Application in Mandrake 9.0

2003-08-14 Thread H. Carter Harris
I think he means a compiled COBOL program that runs under DOS (as opposed to
Win).

The modules developed under this system had some pretty serious runtime
modules that had to be installed on the machine that was going to run it. I
might consider a rewrite among my best choices.

RE: [newbie] Autostart for VNC

2002-11-19 Thread H. Carter Harris
Not cooking yet but at least a slow poaching.

I looked in the /etc/rc.d/rc5.d directory and found a pointer file
(K35vncserver@) pointing to ../init.d/vncservers.

I assume that the rc5 refers to a boot-level 5 maybe?

This looked sorta promising so I checked out ../init.d/vncservers and inside
that bash script are a couple of lines that look promising:

VNCSERVERS=
[ -f /etc/sysconfig/vncservers] . /etc/sysconfig/vncservers

I checked my bash reference but I couldn't find anything that could tell me
exactly what those two lines ought to do. /etc/sysconfig/vncservers is
where I put my two commands that I hoped would automatically start the
vncservers.

What do those two lines do ... and talk slow, I live in the South.

Kidding aside, thanks for your help Steven.

I wanted TightVNC to start when the system reboots. So I added lines
to /etc/sysconfig/vncservers, following the example given in that file

and the great information I got here. Those lines read:

 VNCSERVERS=1:vncusername
 VNCSERVERS=2:vncusername

Where vncusername is the name of the person who is starting the
 sessions.

I rebooted but nothing was started. I checked my syntax, made sure I
got it in the file and got it saved ... all the stupid errors; but I
 couldn't see anything.

It does start fine from the command line. I can start and stop the
 processes at will.

 Where might I look next?

VNCserver should be started via init script in either your
/etc/rc.d/rc3.d or your /etc/rc.d/rc5.d directory - that's what allows
it to startup on boot - as well, did you already set the passwords for
each of the servers/users? Other than that, you should be cooking.

The big problem with pornography is defining it. You can't just
say it's pictures of people naked. For example, you have these
primitive African tribes that exist by chasing the wildebeest on foot,
and they have to go around largely naked, because, as the old tribal
saying goes: N'wam k'honi soit qui mali, which means, If you think
you can catch a wildebeest in this climate and wear clothes at the same
time, then I have some beach front property in the desert region of
Northern Mali that you may be interested in.
So it's not considered pornographic when National Geographic
publishes color photographs of these people hunting the wildebeest
naked, or pounding one rock onto another rock for some primitive reason
naked, or whatever. But if National Geographic were to publish an
article entitled The Girls of the California Junior College System Hunt
the Wildebeest Naked, some people would call it pornography. But
others would not. And still others, such as the Spectacularly Rev.
Jerry Falwell, would get upset about seeing the wildebeest naked.

[newbie] Permissions Problems?

2002-11-06 Thread H. Carter Harris
I'm having a couple of problems that I believe are permissions related.

During my ML 8.2 install, Apache was also installed with all the defaults.
I want to operate the server on a private IP address so I modified the NAT
in my router to send all traffic on port 80 to the private IP. When I
connect to the public IP on port 80, bingo I see the default web page for
the Apache server on my domain. Hey, I'm on a roll!

So now I want to setup a test web page to get virtual domains working. I
have an extra domain lying around so I change my DNS servers to point that
domain to the linux box. On the linux box I setup a dummy page to say
something stupid like Hello World. In the /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf file
I added the following lines:

NameVirtualHost 192.168.1.103

VirtualHost 192.168.1.103
ServerName domainname.com
DocumentRoot /var/www/domainname.com
ServerAlias linuxserver
/VirtualHost

domainname.com is the actual domain name in the real file and linuxserver is
the name of the linux box. After that file was changed, I stopped Apache
and restarted it using webmin. I would like to tell you that I'm smart and
I figured those lines out all by myself but I didn't; I copied them from one
of the tutorials I have been reading (smile). Under the
/var/www/domainname.com directory In /var/www/domainname.com/conf I created
a file named httpd.conf where I put the following lines:

User apache
Group apache
ServerName domainname.com
DocumentRoot /var/www/domainname.com/htdocs

When I try to go to this webpage I get the following error:

Forbidden
You don't have permission to access / on this server.

Apache-AdvancedExtranetServer/1.3.23 Server at www.domainname.com Port 80

Now if I was a gambling man (and I may now be since my state passed a
lottery yesterday), I would guess that the OS doesn't want to give Apache
access to the root folder. Have I done this correctly? And what should I
do to get Apache to server up this page?

The second problem I'm having is with editors. When I wanted to edit the
httpd.conf file I had to execute shell, su, copy the file to my home
directory, open Kate, edit the file and save it, go back to shell, and copy
the file back to the correct place. I have read the warnings about not
logging on as root and I am trying to abide by those warnings but I get the
feeling that I'm not doing something right. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance ...

Carter

Thanks again for your reply and your encouragement!

I will be in the office again tomorrow and I'll load up the CD and install
the rpms you recommend. Sounds like they will be a huge help.

I am also looking at your website ... wonderful source of information ...
thanks again for your great response.

[newbie] VNC Questions ...

2002-10-28 Thread H. Carter Harris
I have been trying to get VNC functionality on a new, textbook install of ML
8.2. I posted here before and with the wisdom of the group, I was
successful with TightVNC. However, to earn the title newbie I did make
some mistakes during the install.

First, I installed it while while in the shell with root privledges. I
would like to change that so it is under another account. Secondly, I would
like to have this install in the software manager.

Questions:

Are there .cf files I can edit to change the user for VNC?
Where are they or how can I find them?
Should I setup a user account just for VNC logins?

These questions naturally bring up more. When I login as root, I get a red
screen with a calendar-type icon and another icon in the upper right hand
corner of the screen and nothing else. If I right click on the screen I get
a popup menu similar to the K button in the KDE Panel. There is no panel
in the red screen.

I think root is starting with an x-window that is not KDE. So far I have
seen 3 different x-window environments on this system: kde, the red one, and
one that has a Linux button when the system is not shut down properly. I
would like to hear a little explaination on this if anyone has time.

To everyone who pointed me in the right direction: Thanks. And thanks to
anyone who takes the time for this little epistle too!
