[newbie]
Hello. I just recently installed 7.0 and now my hard drive is trash. "Physically damaged" is what the diagnostics said. Also I can't access my modem. the PCMCIA demon loads but there are no beeps to indicate they are recognised. This is the same when I tried to reinstall 6.1. Also there is no /var/run/stab flie or other modem associated stuff that used to be there. MS scandisk found thirty bad clusters and then quit. please send any comments, suggestions, or donations ($300 needed) to Ivan trail po box 1472 liberal ks 67901. ps don't try to e-mail because it obviously DOESN'T WORK!!
Re: [newbie] How to mount floppy or CDR on Laptop ??
nilo wrote: I just installed Mandrake 7.0 on my laptop where I can have either a floppy drive or a CD-ROM drive. The install went on OK (it was an update from 6.1) but I discovered the following problem: apparently both the CD-ROM and the floppy are "automounted" in the fstab file: this creates no problem when logging in but freeze the system when loggin out (apparently it tries to umount a device which is not mounted e.g. the floppy when the CD-Rom is inserted). I must then switch the power of and I have to through a full scan at the next log sequence. Any idea on how to fix this problem ??? Could the log procedure auto-detect the mounted device ? Is it possible to swap the drive without login out ? Thanks for your help Jacques I have a toshiba sattelite that uses the same "selectable bay" for floppy/cdrom. I haven't had any problems with it freezing the nachine on logout, but I do have to have the device I want to use installed when I fire up the machine. If I fire it up with the floppy, then decide to use the CDROM, I have to do a reboot. Otherwise I get a similar error when I try to mount the device. I don't think you can do "hot swaps" with linux. I would really like it if someone could correct me on this though!!!
[newbie] Missing Application
Hello All, I get an error when I fire up the desktop, KDE, that says: could not find mime type app/x-kdevelop-project in /usr/share/Development/kdevelop.kdelnk What does that mean? What is a mime type? Just when you think you have something figured out

If you travel at the speed of light what happens when you turn on your headlights? Joe According to the theory of relativity, at the speed of light, mass and energy are interchangeable. Thus you would emit a beam of pure mass which would probably smash you into particles smaller than quarks, The only answer would be to only travel at the speed of light during the daytime. Ivanstein

John Aldrich wrote: Has anyone gotten X to work on a Presario Laptop model #1277? One of my co-workers is trying to get Linux installed on his laptop and it seems the lcd display won't work for him under X. :-( Thanks... John Do you have the right color pitch set for your chipset (video card)? I have linux 6.5 on a toshiba sattelite 220 and I had the same problems with the X server. You should start with the lowest color pitch and lowest resolution and work up. My chipset is supposed to handle 24bpp but will not do it. The best I can do is 16bpp. This looks just fine and works great! I believe that 16bpp is about 256,000 different colors. The trained human eye can see about 2,500. The normal eye, not trained around 2,000, me about 750 because I,m colorblind!!!

[newbie] ICQ rpms on 6.1 cd?
I have searched everything I can think of, but I don't know where to find the ICQ type rpms on my disk. Anyone know the name of them? and while we're at it, how do you get the rpms, in Krpm to arrange in either tree form or like the rpm manager in redhat 5.2? these things along with travel at the speed of light are just some things i can't figure out! Thanks!!

jfcessor wrote: Well I am using an external usr 56k. I tried changing the /dev/modem to ttys1 as suggested but that didnt seem to help, I went and looked in the resolv.conf and it is there but there isnt anything in it. What is supposed to be in there? When I was using a dsl connection through a network card the only info I input into the setup was the network info and everything worked. Do I need to input something somewhere to get a dialup connection to work? Thanks John Michael Scottaline wrote: [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I was running Linux Mandrake 6.1 with a dsl connection but since have moved to a remote area and after changing my hard drive and removing the network card, I have reinstalled mandrake 6.1 but when I set the /dev/modem using modemtool and configure kppp netscape doesnt find it or something. I can use ftp and also chat programs. When I attempt to use netscape it returns an error that it cant locate etc... but watching the lights on my modem I dont believe it even tried. What button didnt I push when I should have? I am very new to Linux but really want to use it so any help would be greatly appreciated. JohnC = What kind of modem??? If it's NOT a winmodem, try using ttyS0 or ttyS1 rather than /dev/modem in kppp. Also, if you've changed providers, you might have to edit your /etc/resolv.conf with your new dns#'s. The easiest way to edit the resolv.conf file is through Linuxconf as root. You can even do this in KDE or X. It is pretty straight forward. The hardest part for me was to get the ISP to release the ###.###.###.### (IP) address for their server. Hope this helps.

You could also go to the library and see if they have the books and cd. If not you can always ask them to get it from their request system. you know, when they use the internet (?) to ask other libraries to share their books. It is worth a shot!
