[newbie] Getting Xine to play .avi files

Hello all,

I just upgraded to 10.1 and I am still having trouble getting xine to play avi
files. I have been
having this problem since 9.0. Can anyone tell me what settings I need to
verify or change to get
this to work?

Right now when I double click on the .avi file xine launces and then it gives
me an unrecognizable
fuzzy picture that is majority blue color and without sound.

Thanks for any help.

[newbie] Installing Mandrake on 9.1 on ppc

2005-02-13 Thread Lovell Mcilwain
Can anyone tell me the "successful" way install mandrake on a macintosh?
I can't do this to save my life and I can't tell what my problem is.
It seems my issue is with the install display which I don't have the
first clue how to fix. Even if I do the install via text-installer,
when I go to boot up my display is still all messed up.

Can anyone tell me a good way to fix this if there is such a way?
I am trying to install this on a bronze G3 Laptop. I have had the same
issue installing on my blue and white desktop as well.

[newbie] Bash Prompt Missing?

2004-12-27 Thread Lovell Mcilwain
Hello all,
I recently posted about haingabout having a problem installing Java.
Not it seems that while I was doing this, I screwed up some settings. I
noticed that I when I logged into my machine that I got the intial
wizard that comes up when you first install MDK. This is the on that
asks you what type of Window manager you want to use and if you want to
register and all that good stuff. I was actually shocked that I was
able to log in at all.

While those aren't so bad, I am noticing the one annoying thing now that
is not working seems to be my bash prompt.

Instead of getting [EMAIL PROTECTED] I get -bash-2.05b$
Once I do a source command to my .bashrc file things come up as normal
with the exception of my alias' not working.

Is there I way I can fix this particular problem? If I need to make the
changes in the bash profile that works for all users I don't seem to be
able to find that file in /etc or in / can anyone tell me where I can
find it or what the name of it is. The name I looked for are .profile,
.bashrc, .cshrc

Thanks
Lovell

[newbie] Install Java for MDK 10.0

2004-12-24 Thread Lovell Mcilwain
Hello all,
I have been trying for the past week to install Java on my linux box but
I have not yet had any luck. Is there something I am missing?

I went to java.com and downloaded the latest version of Java. Followed
there directions for installing the .bin file (pretty straight
forward). Once I did that I tried to go to a place the required java
and it didn't load.

Is there another way that I can install it or is there a directory that
I need to reference with my firefox browser?

Any help would be great.
Thanks,

Re: [newbie] re: SSH

2004-12-08 Thread Lovell Mcilwain
How did you set your firewall preferences when you installed Mandrake?
If I recall, if it's set to high then it will deny port 22 as well. If
you think you set it two high then you can lower it in your mandrake
control center or if you want to keep it where it is, you can
specifically allow port 22 while your firewall settings are at the same
state.

[newbie] sound in mdk 9 vs sound in mdk 10

2004-11-16 Thread Lovell Mcilwain

Hello all,

I remember sending a post a while back about my sound not working on mdk 10 with the machine I had it installed all.

Now it seems I am having the same problem but its slightly different.

In the case of last time I was running mdk 10 on an old micron laptop and it didn't recognized my sound card until I rand the sndconf utility.

In the case of this machine I am using at work I am running mdk 9 on an old micron desktop and it did recognize my sound card as a YMF-740C [ds-1L Audio Controller].  All seems fine until I try to play something on xmms.  I can see the file playing but I don't hear any sound.  I checked to make sure that the sound server was enabled, I made sure that the OS volume was up, and I made sure the the physical volume on the machine was up and I still don't hear anything.

Can any one tell me of a utility that I can use to try and test sound wth different drivers or tell me how I can get these drivers to work?  I did try re running sndconf but my system doesn't recognize that command (even as root)

Thanks in advance guys!

L

Re: [newbie] 10.1 PPC?

2004-11-10 Thread Lovell Mcilwain

I have also had my issues with mandrake on the powerpc with regards to
installing on my blue and white g3 or my bronze g3 laptop.

I would much rather have mandrake then the mac os that is on it but
when I go to install it, the gui comes up all funky and when I try
installing in text mode it doesn't seem to install properly  so when I
go to boot up it acts as if there is no operating system on the disk at
all.  Or in some cases I get the same screen you do and nothing else
from that point either.

Is it that mandrake has problems with there installer for the ppc?  Is
there an alternate way of installing?

  Yo;
I just downloaded Mandrake 10.1 PPC and am trying to install it on my PowerMac

Mandrake. BootX is configured with the ramdisk and kernal specified in the
documentation for the install... it seems chipper here, kills MacOS when I
click "Linux," blacks out the screen, the Mandrake logo appears in the upper
left-hand corner and.. nothing. Not a burp, not a bang. Frozen.
   And help?

[newbie] vnc over ssh

2004-11-09 Thread Lovell Mcilwain
Hello all,
I am trying figure out what my issue with connecting to my linux machine
via vnc over ssh.

I had no problem connecting to my machine via ssh but my window manager
got all screwed up.

It was grey and black just as is was before I specified the session I
wanted to displayed.

Is there an extra entry I need to make in my xstartup script for vnc to
work via ssh?

I was told that when connecting via vnc is manages to start anther x11
session but I don't know how valid that statement iss since it seems to
work without using ssh.

Any help is appreciated..

Well I found the issue.. I didn't put a & at the end of my
gnome-session statement.  It works with no problems now.

Uh - you have to make changes to the ~/home/yournamehere/.vnc/ files in
order to have the desktop of your choice load when you connect to your
machine remotely...
