What is the initlevel you are booting into. Check in
/etc/inittab for a line beginning with id:. The
number after that is your default run level. Then
check in the directory /etc/rcrunlevel.d/ whether
there are any links named S*named and S*mysql. If not
there, create them.

 they work fine until next

I have had exactly the same problem on 3 installs

Here is what I found on the rpmfind.net for that file:

Install the rpm for libXpm and try to run configure

Re: [newbie] recording audio

Here is what I do.
Convert your mp3 files to .wav files using a program
such as mpg123. mpg123 with -w option works quite well
for this. Then using any CD burner software like
xcdroast or koncd etc. create an audio cd giving these
.wav files as the individual tracks. The CD thus
created can be used in any standard CD player.

Re: [newbie] Dynamic IP

2002-12-03 Thread Nikunj Bansal
Sure. Your distro CDs should have the OpenSSH
software. The RPMs are named like openssh-common,
openssh-server, openssh-client. Install them on ur
Linux box.

The installation will also create a default setup good
to go as a server on port 22. You can tweak all that
in /etc/ssh/sshd.conf. Test it out by issuing the ssh
localhost command. It should connect, ask you for ur
login password and drop you into a shell.

No need to use the insecure telnet afterwards. SSH
sessions are secured using encryption. Lots of
enhancements can be done using SSH. Stuff like
tunneling other insecure protocols like IMAP or X over
the SSH channel, doing client authentication using
client keys or single sign on to the entire network
can be achieved easily using SSH. There is even a
secure file copy (scp) along with it. Rest is RTFM :-)

Hi Jim,

Thanks for the response. I do not have any of the
devices as slaves. I have 3 IDE devices - 2 HDDs and 1
CDROM/RW (Plextor 12/10/32). Apart from the 2 slots
for IDE on board I also have a PCI-IDE bridge for the
extra device. Here is my problem. The Mandrake Install
CD does not recognize the device(s) plugged into the
on-board slots but does so for the device(s) plugged
into the PCI-IDE bridge. I have experimented with
different combinations and this seems to be always the
case. I know that the CDs are good as I have used this
same set many times before to install. Also, both the
8.0 and the 9.0 CD give the same exact problem. On the
other hand, the RedHat CD works just fine.

Am not sure how to get the BIOS updates and install
them. I dont have DOS/Windows at all to do that. Can
one do that from Linux?

Thanks

devices as slaves. I have 3 IDE devices - 2 HDDs
 and 1
  CDROM/RW (Plextor 12/10/32). Apart from the 2
 slots
for IDE on board I also have a PCI-IDE bridge for
 the
extra device. Here is my problem. The Mandrake
 Install
CD does not recognize the device(s) plugged into
 the
on-board slots but does so for the device(s)
 plugged
into the PCI-IDE bridge. I have experimented with
different combinations and this seems to be always
 the
case. I know that the CDs are good as I have used
 this
same set many times before to install. Also, both
 the
8.0 and the 9.0 CD give the same exact problem. On
 the
other hand, the RedHat CD works just fine.

Am not sure how to get the BIOS updates and
 install
them. I dont have DOS/Windows at all to do that.
 Can
  one do that from Linux?

  Thanks
  Nikunj.

Re: [newbie] more on Asus P4B533-E

If thats the case, then redhat seems to have done
something right. Coz I am able to use my existing
install of redhat from before my motherboard
replacement adventure and also I am able to get the
redhat 9.0 install CD to recognize all devices on the
onboard IDE controllers.

I'm starting to think this is a bug in Intel's

 on IRQs 14/15...
then it complains on every boot:

PCI Resouce collisions 00:1F (I'll post a complete
 dmesg if anyone is
 interested).

Alan Cox claims to have fixed this in the stock
 kernel with his patch
tree, but I'm still too newbie to get a compiled
 kernel to boot. It
 crashes after every boot.

What gets me thinking is... on these motherboards,
 Intel ships the
Intel Application Accelerator which is basically
 nothing more than a
package of UDMA drivers for the onboard IDE
 controllers. It's starting
to feel like they're compensating for something...

[newbie] CDROM not found error in installation

2002-11-26 Thread Nikunj Bansal
Hello all,

I am a longtime Mandrake user (~3 years) and I am
getting stuck at the first
step in installation. I have a Plextor 12/10/32A
CDROM/CD Writer. I have
been succesfully using it for about 10 months now
under Mandrake 8.1/8.2.
In fact, I have done OS installs on this machine using
this as a CDROM
drive.

However, I got my PC's motherboard and CPU changed
yesterday (old: P-II 350
MHz Tyan motherboard, new: Celeron 1.8GHz, ABIT BD-711
motherboard). And I
was not able to boot into Mandrake 8.2. So I decided
to reinstall the OS. I
have tried Mandrake 8.1, 8.2 and 9.0 Install CDs. All
of them boot the
machine fine and ask to press Enter to install. When I
do that... it starts
reading from the CD just fine, but then after a few
seconds it displays the
following error message in a box:

No CDROM device found

I may be off on the wording of the above error message
as it is from memory.

When I choose Ok on this, it asks to choose a SCSI
driver. I tried all of
them and none worked, as expected. I have never
experienced the no cdrom
error message before, so I dont know what to do...

What could be wrong here?

Thanks in advance,
Nikunj.
