For your TNT2 card, get the XF4 drivers Nvidia just released:
Kernel module:

GLX module:
ftp://ftp1.detonator.nvidia.com/pub/drivers/english/XFree86_40/NVIDIA_GLX-0.9.tar.gz

From some else's email, you will need to
add this to the DEFINES line in the Makefile: "-D_LOOSE_KERNEL_NAMES".
in order to get the module to compile.

Try "cdrecord -scanbus" as root. If that shows a burner attachted, edit

RE: [newbie] Supermount for MDK 7.0-2 ... How Do You Get It To Work?

2000-02-11 Thread Richard Yevchak

This is assuming you have an ide burner. It seems that during the install of LM
7.0 or the the first time I booted, the system recognized I had a CD-R. So it
must have set up the CD-R on "/dev/scd0". Try "cdrecord -scanbus" as root.
That should show that the systems sees your CD burner. If that works, edit
"/etc/fstab" and look for the line for your CD drive. Change it so that the
part where it says "dev=/dev/cdrom" reads "dev=/dev/scd0". Try and read a
disk, you may have to umount the device by hand first. I don't know why this
works. I got errors when I tried to mount "/dev/hdc" which I think should have
worked since that is where the kernel identifies it as being at start up. If
cdrecord doesn't find any drives, you will have to setup SCSI emulation by
hand, although neither the install nor the start up procedure told me it did.

Hope this helps. If this works, please let me know.

Re: [newbie] Please Help! Unable to mount Yamaha CRW4416E (read only!) in Mandrake 7.0

2000-01-22 Thread Richard Yevchak

I had a similar problem. First make sure you can mount the CD-RW manually. I
think the installer is smart enough to determine the drive is CD-RW, so it
sets up the SCSI emulation for you. It just doesn't change fstab to reflect
this. Try (assuming you want to mount it on /mnt/cdrom2):

mount -t iso9660 /dev/scd0 /mnt/cdrom2

You may have unmount /mnt/cdrom2 first. If this works, change the following
line (again assuming fstab is trying to mount your CD-RW on
/mnt/cdrom2/):

mnt/cdrom2 /mnt/cdrom2 supermount fs=iso9660,dev=/dev/cdrom2 0 0

to:

/mnt/cdrom2 /mnt/cdrom2 supermount fs=iso9660,dev=/dev/scd0 0 0

You are changing the "dev=" portion to point at "/dev/scd0".

Hope this helps.

I tried manually mounting it with: mount -t iso9660 /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom

the resulting error message was (substituting /dev/cdrom from /dev/hdc for the
second mount command):

The disk I'm trying to mount is the CD I installed LM7 from.

 I tried manually mounting it with: mount -t iso9660 /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom
 and: : mount -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom

the resulting error message was (substituting /dev/cdrom from /dev/hdc for the
 second mount command):
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on
/dev/hdc,or too many mounted file systems

The disk I'm trying to mount is the CD I installed LM7 from.

Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

[newbie] OT - uptime

1999-12-10 Thread Richard Yevchak

I know this is off topic(at least some what), if you disprove don't respond and
I'll get the hint. But, I am really curious about how many of you leave your
personal systems running all the time. I shutdown everynight. I've heard the
system isn't designed to be shutdown everynight. If you leave your system
running, do you turn your monitor off at night or just leave it on. If you
leave it on all the time, how often do you reset your computer (how do you
decide when)?

Re: [newbie] Kde Template/Autostart

1999-12-09 Thread Richard Yevchak

I use Autostart (to run kgoodstuff and kwikdisk) when I run KDE, although I've
been using Window Maker lately(I think I just switched window managers). If
there is a comparably easy way to start programs when KDE starts take them out
(something like .xinit right?).

Re: [newbie] Window Managers and xdm

1999-12-01 Thread Richard Yevchak

Since I first posted I've done some more checking after finding out about kdm.
"/usr/share/config/kdmrc" appears to be the file in question.
I added blackbox to the line containing session types. It appears to keep the
changes.

also in the config tool, where do you place the commands to exe the new

IE: I want to add XFCE to the drop down, I went into the config and added
the item XDFCE and saved, but where do I place the
 exec xfce commands

better yet, screw the darn gui config ;-P what files need to be modified to
 add options?
I tried the /etc/X11/xdm/ (think it was xserver or xclients or something
like that) but no help seeing
init 5 uses prefdm which is linked to kdm.. where ar ethe kdm config

You'll also need to use KDE's "kdmconfig" tool to add it it to the
 drop-down box.

Re: [newbie] root user unable to access user X server...

1999-11-13 Thread Richard Yevchak

Before you run an application in a terminal as root, you need to type:
xhost localhost
If you close that terminal, you will have to retype it to run apps in another
terminal as root. I think you can also add it to .xinitrc to have it executed
every session.

Use your monitor's image controls to center and then expand the screen

Re: [newbie] system crash after installation on AMD K7

1999-10-15 Thread Richard Yevchak

I don't have a K7 but I read an article at
www.cpureview.com/rev_k7-linux1_a.html.
It appears that the Pentium optimization specifically the MTRR prevent
it from loading.
I guess until an Athlon specific compilers come out, the only way to use
an Athlon is with a kernel compiled for use on a 386.

Sony DC_RW CRX-120 as slave on IDE2

The components marked with (*) were in my previous PC (DELL PII-400)
on which I could install Mandrake 6 without problems.

Disk1 contians a primary NTFS partition (which contains WinNT4) and an
extended partition which is divided into two NTFS logical drives.
Disk2 contains a primary FAT partition that contains Win98, and extented
partitions for win98 data (fat) and Linux

The installation runs without problems. After the reboot, however I get a
system crash (every time). The last lines before the crash occurs are:
   checking POSIX conplyance
   mttr

These are the things that I have tried:
 - replace the CR-RW with the CD_ROM from the DELL PC
 - remove the HDD on IDE 1
 - empty the HDD on IDE 2 (no win98). So the problem has nothing to do with
the presence of Win98 on disk2. It occurs also if Linux has the disk all to
 itself.

Anyone out there have any idea what goes wrong?

It works just fine. You have to go to
ftp.soundblaster.com/pub/creative/beta/ and download
emu10k1-0.3b.tar.gz.
For 2.2.9-19 use the module for version 2.2.5. If you upgrade to
2.2.9-27 use the module for ver. 2.2.10

[newbie] Kernel update

1999-01-03 Thread Richard Yevchak

I just downloaded the RPM (kernel-2.2.13-22mdk.i586.rpm) update kernel for
Mandrake. When I try to install it with either "-ivh" or "-Uvh" it says:
kernel 2.2.0 conflicts with nscd-2.1.1-16mdk
kernel 2.2 conflicts with raidtools-0.90-5mdk
I'm just curios what this is about. If the RPM won't let me install, I'll
just have to compile a kernel from the new sources.
