[newbie] Reinstallation Help Required

2004-10-30 Thread SME Server Admin
Hi Folks

I have finally got my mitts on a replacement 80gb Hdd for this linux machine,
MDK10.

However, before I splash ahead I'd like some advice and stuff

1. It's going to be dual boot so I'd need to install the Win98se first (in a
20gb partition) and then install Mdk telling it to leave the 98 partition
right? This will assume that Mdk will sort it's own partitions up right. I'd
like to keep the personal files on another partition, is that feasable or is
it worth just leaving MDK to get on with it!

2. Samba. Assuming I want to have a samba shared area do I need to create that
as a seperate drive??

3. For keeping all my mail folders and everything is it OK to install the new
OS then move the info from the old hard drive to the right place on the new
hard drive?? Or do I have to do something else. I know when I last backed up
the mail folders k3b changed all the dots to underscores :( Windows had
problems recognising some files and that went a bit haywire for a bit.

4. is there anything else anyone here things I should do before the transfer??

Cheers, Elwyn

Awaiting your help before I proceed :)

[newbie] Dual Booting..

2004-10-20 Thread SME Server Admin
Hi Folks

I've had a look around but I can only see options for setting up a dual boot
system from scratch. I'd like to be able to just add windows to this
machine

I've got a 25gb Hdd in this machine, with linux but I'd like to put 10gb or so
aside to put Windows 98 on...

I know it's pushing it fine, but it's only for games (hangs head) so I can
play them networked...

I'm going to give CrossOffice a go for one of them

TIA

Elwyn

I always say, make sure you can boot into the old system if something goes
wrong and then just let 'er rip. Nothing like doing to improve the
 learning.

You really should be able to put the drive in the new motherboard and boot
it up. Linux is really good about adjusting to new hardware. You may have
to tweak a few things that load out of /etc/modprobe.conf (lan cards,
soiund cards, etc.), but most of the motherboard stuff should be recognized
and the appropriate drivers be installed automatically.

Thanks :) Most of it has gone through OK.

When it shuts down it tries to unmount the old network card, which isn't
installed anyway, and I can't find it in the configs :(

Normally I would be happy to leave it at that... But a machine I was going to
use for games has, er, keeled over.

Awaiting advice from here

Tried backing up my mail directory and K3b made all the leading dots to be
underscores?! Huh?

Do I need to put anything special in to K3b to get it leave the dots in, or is
that an impossibility??

If I recall correctly Win98 insists on installing on the first partition on
the drive, so unless partition 1 is currently unused you may have a
problem. If you can get Win98 installed, then booting from CD1 in rescue
mode will get you into Linux again so a Lilo entry can be created.

Ok, Thanks for that...

[newbie] FSTab

2004-10-18 Thread SME Server Admin
Hi Folks

I'm doing a bit of, er, housekeeping.

Can someone tell me of the following entries which are not needed.

/dev/hda1 / ext3 defaults 1 1
none /dev/pts devpts mode=0620 0 0
/dev/hda6 /home ext3 defaults 1 2
//sentinel/Primary /mnt/Primary smbfs
user,credentials=/etc/samba/auth.sentinel.admin 0 0
/dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom auto
umask=0,user,iocharset=iso8859-15,codepage=850,noauto,ro,exec 0 0
/dev/hda5 swap swap defaults 0 0

I can remove the Sentinel option and I've somehow got an icon on the desktop
for a network drive or usb drive or something called Remote Share which I
think is to do with the Sentinel link.

I've 1 hard drive and 1 cdrw in this, no other usb devices yet.

Cheers.

[newbie] Moving System / Upgrading.... Help!

2004-10-17 Thread SME Server Admin
Aftenoon :)

The time has come. I am finally in a position (technically) to upgrade this
computer (Mandrake 10 on a P2-300mhz PC (384mb ram, 25gb Hdd, CRRW) to the
chassis of an AMD1300 (384mb ram, the rest transfers over). Just need a bit
of guidance and advise before I continue... Please :)

Part 1.

Now. I heavily use Kontact, Konqueror, Kopete, and occasionally Mozilla.

I'm working at backing up and moving as much as possible into a storage area
(hard drive or CD) while I do the change.

What else have I missed? All personal files will be moved over to storage
anyway that I can. But I don't want to lose any email. Obviously the filters
will change anyway, and I'll have to setup spamassassin again!

Part 2.

Spec. The following spec is the new machine. Can anyone see any problems that
may present itself ahead of time. It's about a year old, but all should be
recognisable hardware by now (Please!)

The information was stripped from Belarc Advisor. The host hardware is
currently looking after a soon to demise XP installation.

Processor

1.30 gigahertz AMD Duron
128 kilobyte primary memory cache
64 kilobyte secondary memory cache

Main Circuit Board

Board: Matsonic MS8308E
Bus Clock: 66 megahertz
BIOS: American Megatrends Inc. 062710 07/15/9

Bus Adapters

SiS 7001 PCI to USB Open Host Controller
SiS 7001 PCI to USB Open Host Controller

Multimedia

MPU-401 Compatible MIDI Device
SiS 7018 Audio Driver
Standard Game Port

Controllers

Primary IDE Channel [Controller]
Secondary IDE Channel [Controller]
SiS PCI IDE Controller

Display

NVIDIA RIVA TNT2 Model 64 [Display adapter]
SiS 300/305/630/540/730 [Display adapter]
Relisys RE767 [Monitor] (14.6vis, February 1997)

Communications

SiS 900 PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter
Network IP Address: 192.168.0.7 / 24

Other Devices

USB Human Interface Device
Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 Keyboard
Microsoft PS/2 Mouse
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub

I don't think there will be much of a problem with that. The onboard video is
not being used, the other onboard things are what are worrying me because
it's all on the motherboard :(

Hiya Folks

I'm after a basic database program for Mandrake 10.

It only needs about 5-10 fields but records wise could stretch on to several
thousand records, and needs to allow imports from CSV files?

Only for personal use... I've got Cross Office running MS Office 97 for access
but it's slow and I'd like a proper Linux version!

Suggestions please?

I'd like it to be able to flash in the taskbar when someone says something.

If not can someone suggest another program instead please? I'm getting on well

Yes :) Indeed :)

Despite this I am S glad I've moved to Linux though, it has taken a lot of
headache out of somethings that Windows does which i don't like :(

Also, I've found the files.

I was playing around with Midnight Commander and found that the files were
not gone afterall.

I had mounted the folder on from the XP machine on the Linux machine using
LinNeighborhood. Then moved the files over. They had not appeared on the XP
machine. It turns out that a folder was created in the /mnt/XP/ folder and
the files moved there!

I've now managed to get them over, and I think it's time I sorted out some of
the links and file shares across the network.

Now a happier bunny. Cheers

Right. I have been in a similar situation. I have had trouble getting 98 to

the login details of the 98 machine.

To access Linux 98, Linux XP, Linux SME Web Server I've used

Unfortunatly my file server has gone off on other vital duties and my large
file space is on XP which is annoying me. With your setup can your 98

With the problem you've mentioned, can your XP machine see your 98 machine?

Can your Linux machine see your XP machine?

Are you using static IP or DHCP, what network parts have you got installed on

Why go to that trouble you should have a windows partition on 10.0 check
/mnt usually its /mnt/windows but it could be somthing else. Its a read
only partition but you can copy anything over to linux. After you get
 everything copied then delete windows(g).

I think the XP machine will go back to being 98 because I really don't like

Since tried another copy and it worked fine.

the email. I can however see them if I do a reply or a forward.

This happened last night, don't know what caused it and I rebooted and it
went away. I had tried reopening Kontact a few times but it didnt help.

So, at the moment I can only read emails by trying to reply to them :(

Suggestions please? I'd like, if at all possible, to get out of this
problem /without/ having to reinstall everything!

I've even tried extra coffee and it doesn't help!

  Help!

  Elwyn

Right. In Configure Kmail: Kontact and Appearance

Fonts: I've got this set to a custom just to get the text larger, but even
if I uncheck use custom fonts then the problem remains. And that's been
 like that for several months!

 Colours tab is standard

Layout tab has the following items checked, although changing anything
here doesnt make a blind yot of difference!

 Show HTML status bar
 Folder List: Long Folder List
Message Preview Pane: Show the message preview pane below the message list
Message Structure Viewer: show only for non plaintext messages
Message Structure Viewer Placement: below the message pane

 Elwyn

Hmm. Rebooted for the nth time and it works now :( Grr

Any Suggestions??

Re: [newbie] Got a problem viewing anything in mail

2004-08-02 Thread SME Server Admin
Right. I seem to be getting somewhere.

I have no idea why this is happening, but the Message Body is closing up
between the message list and the message structure leaving just a thick
grey line with 6 dots in the middle.

When the MB is back, with the ML at the top and MS at the bottom this grey
line is half the thickness with three little dots in the centre of this line
top and bottom.

Can anybody decode this for me please?

[newbie] Updating

2004-08-01 Thread SME Server Admin
Hi Folks

Right, I'm on MDK10 and have found out that I have the basic version of KDE /
Kontact so I'm looking to upgrade.

ftp://ftp.sunsite.org.uk/sites/ftp.kde.org/kdeftp/stable/3.2.3/ is the place
I've found to get the updates from.

What program to I used to update? Or do I do it through the shell with urpmi?

an urpmi source. But look in the archives...

I did it, and had some minor glitches, that I solved, but others have had

It refreshes the Konq window - so apparently you were seeing cached
data in the Konq window - hence why I always tune my EIDE drives, and
rarely use Konq (Rox works, Nautilus works sometimes for large data
caches, MC works great, the cli even better)

Thanks when I get over some other problems I intend to investigate mc
and cli works but not better much slower and more typing.

It refreshes most things. Works on Windows so wasnt really surprised it worked
here as well :)

In Windows I was also used to Shift-Click a link to open in new window, and in
Konq it's Ctrl-Click :)

There are several, but quite a few of us use SpamAssassin. SA takes a bit
of teaching, but once you parse a couple of thousand messages it gets
extremely good at filtering out the junk. It is on your disks, and
probably already installed. To begin your adventure go here:

system sounds off. However, as a first step, let me recommend that you add
the PLF repository, or Charles' repository to urpmi and install xmms and
xmms-arts plugin from those sites to make sure that you have the newest
versions. Also, you might consider switching your hardware sound drivers
from OSS to ALSA which is a newer architecture and might be better
supported under newer versions of Mandrake.

[newbie] Grip on Mandrake 10

2004-07-18 Thread SME Server Admin
Hi Folks

Whats the setup to get Grip to rip CDs to MP3?

At the moment I've got the encoding setup to oggenc because all the others
wont work :(

Others tried are: gogo, mp3encode, xingmp3enc, l3enc, lame, bladeenc

For mp3encode for example I've got the following settings

Encoder Command Line: -p 2 -l 3 -b %b %w %m
Encoder File Format: ~/mp3/%A/%d/%t_%n.ogg

If it's encoding to MP3 surely the extention of the file format should be mp3
not ogg?

The error message I get is Invalid Encoder Executable Check your encoder
config

Which is where I am stuck.

Help!

MandrakeSoft can't package mp3 encoders due to licensing restrictions,
so you'll have to download and install an mp3 encoder like lame. If you
add plf to your urpmi sources I think you can get lame and other mp3
 encoders.
Ahh, I see :) Thanks for telling me...

If you don't need the tunes for a portable player, I'd recommend
sticking with ogg anyway; it's better and free.

 Todd

Ok. Winamp can cope with OGG can't it?!? Down the line I'm planning on
getting an iRiver HP 120/130/140 whatever and that does OGG
