[newbie] IPv6 question

2001-09-01 Thread Tuan Duc Tran

Could any one please tell me what is Ipv6? I have heard that Ipv6 use
128 bits. Does it mean if we take 128/8 we have 16 bytes addressing? If
not, does Ipv6 is 6 bytes address instead of 4 bytes which we are using
right now? And, how do we setup Ipv6 on Linux or windows? Is it a must
use or we can stay with Ipv4?
Thank you

RE: [newbie] Dynamic IP?

2001-08-01 Thread Tuan Duc Tran

This mean you have to pay for fixed IP which is also provided by
RoadRunner. The cost for Fixed IP about $80.00 USD/month. They will give
you 1 fixed IP and 4 dynamic IP + 1 Cisco Router.

If it wasn't for bad luck, well you know the rest. For 4 months now (the

entire time I have had roadrunner) I have had the exact same IP number.
Now
RoadRunner decided they wanted to change it I guess. So now my .html
files
all have the wrong links on them. Am I gonna have to edit my html files
(for
apache) everytime they change my IP or is there a way around this?

There's something else you're going to want to look for, or your
webadmin will NOT allow you access to
the interface.

As ROOT, edit the file /etc/webmin/miniserv.conf

I believe it's line 11, that by default reads:

ssl=1

Unless you have ssl configured and the cert created, you will not be
able to gain access to the webmin.
If you change that line to read:

ssl=0

You will be able to get by using http://hostname:1.

Once you've gotten that far, keep in mind that webmin will ONLY recogize
the root user, and the root
passwd specified at install. If you have since changed the root passwd,
the new passwd will not work.
So I hope you either remember the original root passwd, or haven't
changed it.

As far as ssh goes. Stick with it! It's more secure then telnet unless
you're using another kind of
telnet. I know FreeBSD comes with a secure telnet that uses SRA secure
login.

[newbie] Samba stopped working..

2001-07-26 Thread Tuan Duc Tran

I have a LINUX OS computer which is used to store my back up files for
all computers I have at home. It used to work but last week I could not
access to this computer. I did not change anything at this computer. I
checked everything and pretty sure that there is no problem with this
computer except SAMBA. When I type IP of this computer from my windows
computer browser and I saw it. Therefore I knew Apache was running.
After I decided to re-install LM8.0, I could not get SAMBA back to work!
Could anyone please explain for me and how to fix it? I am using Win2000
SPK2.
I also have two more questions: How can I setup FTP and mail server? I
know not thing at all.

Thank all of you

Tuan,

Sounds as though www.mylinuxbox.com isn't a registered domain name. If
it
isn't then you can only get to the machine via IP (because it is
unresolvable in dns). You have two options to get beyond this -
register
it through one of the domain registrars or add it to the /etc/hosts
file.

RE: [newbie] printing to Laserjet 4000 Series PS

2001-06-19 Thread Tuan Duc Tran

Well,
The best way to setup is using CUPS.
First, I assumed you installed CUPS
Second, you need to open browser (Ex. Netscape) and type
http://localhost:631 it will ask you ROOT password.
from this page you can add new printer. When it ask you the port; select
app/jet direct.
It will show socket:// . you need to type: socket://(your printer server
IP):9100) (EX. socket://192.168.0.1:9100). It will ask you to select printer
and it also ask you if you want to print a test page. I use Jetdirect170 so
I put IP:9100. If it does not work with your print server, try to use 9101
or 9102.
FYI, It seem like my printer prints slower when I use Linux but it does good
job.

Hi all,

I really need advice here. I have installed LM8 and want to set up a
printer.

We have a LaserJet 4000 Series PS on a network and use Netware (ipx, spx
protocol) for the Windows pc's to print on it.
I have set up the HP JetDirect print server on the printer and can talk to
it via its ip address.
From all the websites and howto's I see there are many different options for
me CUPS, LPRng and so on. Can someone comment on my options please, eg. what
is easy to set up?

Thanks,
Norman
